W ELCOME ! The Engineering Quarterly is a newsletter published four times each year by the University of Mary School of Engineering. In each issue, we try to include articles from each of the five engineering majors that we currently offer on campus: Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, and Construction Management. The intended audience of the Engineering Quarterly is engineers, engineering students, engineering alumni, future engineering students, and people working in fields related to engineering such as science, computing, and mathematics. 2021 E NGINEERING G RADUATES Peter Collart is graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Peter is originally from Covington, GA. He discovered the University of Mary through the Newman list of Catholic colPeter Collart leges and decided to come because of its new engineering program. “I was intrigued by the thought of being among UMary’s first engineering graduates. I chose engineering for a couple reasons. I began entertaining the idea when my eldest brother became a nuclear engineer. I’ve always been intrigued by how things work, and I love machines and technology. I began studying Mechanical Engineering and discovered that it was the fit for me. After my sophomore year I did an internship at Steffes in Dickinson, ND. I loved the work and the company treated me very well (as they do to all their employees). After my junior year, I interned at Doosan Bobcat in Bismarck, ND. My internship has been extended throughout the rest of my senior year. I work part-time alongside my classes. Bobcat has become my favorite place to work because of the nature of the job. I love working on the advanced machines that Bobcat produces, and it is uncommon to be able to work in such high-end facilities like Bobcat’s Acceleration Center.” “I love the people I’ve met in North Dakota and I also love the size of Bismarck. However, I miss seeing trees and mountains
since they are what I grew up with. Additionally, I wish Bismarck was a little less isolated. The UMary faculty are phenomenal! They receive the highest of my recommendations and gratitude. I really appreciate getting to know some of them on a more personal level. A funny incident happened before I left in March 2020 due to the coronavirus. I met AJ in the machine shop one morning to perform some last-minute tensile tests on 3D printed specimens for one of my projects. When we finished, I donned my backpack and prepared to leave. AJ and I looked across the room to see Dr. Carrico sitting in the middle of the shop floor, carefully measuring his legs from hip to toe with a measuring tape. After a minute, Dr. Carrico noticed we were observing him with puzzled faces, and he let out a loud and embarrassed laugh before quickly standing up and stating, You don’t know me!” “I have a job offer located in Oklahoma City, OK with BNSF Railway. Additionally, I am awaiting a decision from Bobcat concerning a full-time offer here in Bismarck, ND. I will be marrying my fiancée in June, and we will be moving to one of these two locations to start a family.”

as a second hometown. I feel very at home here and I could hardly hope for a more vibrant community life than what is on display in Bismarck. I had an opportunity to see much of the state in my travels for my 2020 summer internship - an opportunity I am very thankful for, as it gave me more of an insight into how Bismarck and the University of Mary fit into the larger state and regional community. I think all of my professors did an excellent job, and I’m grateful to all of them for their commitment to making sure I had a good chance to succeed in their classes. One amusing memory I have is shooting a nerf gun at both Dr. Eric Garcia and Anthony Waldenmier’s heads during Dynamics class. If I remember correctly, any team of students that was able to hit one of the professors in the head by calculating the correct launch angle of the nerf dart was awarded bonus points on an exam.” “Currently, my plans for the future actually do not involve much engineering.
