Each year, the Utah Manufacturers Association produces our Annual Service Directory. This directory is a listing of all of the associates and service members within the organization who provide vital services and essential products to manufacturing companies. The Service Directory’s purpose is to provide Utah manufacturers with a complete listing of all of these organizations and the types of services they provide.

One of the benefits of belonging to a professional organization is the opportunity to work with individuals and companies who have the same beliefs and mission as you. Clearly, companies who are involved with the UMA are supportive of the manufacturing industry and want to see it grow, prosper, and continue to be the driving engine in Utah.

The UMA mission is “strengthening Utah’s manufacturers by developing and providing resources that drive prosperity.” We look forward to publishing the Annual Service Directory to assist manufacturing companies in finding the resources they need to succeed as a manufacturer in the state.

The Service Directory has multiple types of listings companies have chosen to include in the directories. Contact information and more detailed information on the types of services, products, and resources each associate company provides. We encourage

You’ve Been Ghosted: 3 Steps to Becoming an HR Ghostbuster Applicant Pro

Ghosting is at an all-time high…according to a recent Gallup Poll, ghosting is up to 28%!!! That’s a lot of job applicants disappearing during the hiring process.

With numbers that high, it’s probably safe to assume that you’ve been the victim of ghosting…or maybe you’re guilty of ghosting…have you ever had someone apply for one of your jobs and never got back to them? Maybe they weren’t qualified, but instead of sending them a rejection letter, you just stopped communicating with them. Guess what? That’s ghosting too! So hiring managers and job seekers are both guilty of ghosting.

There are a few key stages within the hiring process that are more susceptible to ghosting than others; the job ad, the application process, and the screening phase.

Let’s start with the job ad since that’s where the job seeker will get their first impression of you and your open jobs. The biggest reason, we have found, that job seekers will ghost you right from the beginning is that you use a job description as your job ad. In fact, 82% of employers do this! The truth is, your job description was never meant to be a job ad!

Job descriptions are missing a few key items that will lead to ghosting:

• They’re not exciting or enticing for job seekers… at all

• They usually don’t include the job schedule

• The pay structure and benefits package is not part of the job description…but this is one of the most important pieces of information to job seekers

• Job requirements are not generally listed in the job description

Using your job description as your job ad will lead to applicants moving on past your job before you even knew they existed! You need to draw job seekers in with a really compelling job ad that markets your company as an employer of choice!

Next, the application part of the process. The first thing you can do to ensure your application won’t drive applicants away is to make it MOBILE-friendly! Job seekers are constantly reaching for their phones to look for jobs. So, if your job applications aren’t mobile-friendly, they won’t be willing to apply for them.

Quick-Apply! This is crucial…your job should take no

longer than 3 minutes to apply for, at least the 1st stage of the application. Studies have shown that for every minute over 5 minutes that it takes to apply for your job, you will lose 50% of applicants.

The third important thing to remember for your application process is to NOT USE REDIRECT! 76% of your applicants will ghost you if you make them redirect to another website to apply. Resume/profile parsing is so important…if they can apply right on the job board where they already have a profile set up, it will auto-populate their information and save them so much time!

And lastly, the screening stage! The main point here is COMMUNICATION! Just keep an open line of communication with your applicants. Make sure they always know what’s going on with the process. Currently, job seekers are only on the market for 18 days (on average) before being hired somewhere. If you aren’t communicating with your top picks at least every 2-3 days, they’re going to ghost you and take another job somewhere that has been better at

keeping them in the loop.

When doing interviews, remove any distractions, so you can ensure your interviewers are able to focus 100% on the applicant… this will make them feel important and wanted. Make sure your interviewers are your brand champions! If they’re excited about the job and love working for your company, that’ll come across during the interview and make the job more enticing to the candidate. If your applicants don’t feel important or excited about working for your company, they will for sure ghost you!

While you may not be able to prevent ghosting 100%, especially in a competitive labor market, paying attention to these crucial steps in the hiring process will definitely mitigate the risk of applicants leaving you in the dark!

Seven Rules to Survive and Thrive in An Economic Downturn

1. Focus on customer retention: During difficult economic times, customer loyalty becomes increasingly important. Enhanced focus on customer retention is paramount to maintaining your historical performance. This is a time your customers are also evaluating how they are spending their money and are looking to reduce expenses wherever possible. One of the biggest mistakes we see is the assumption a customer’s drop in purchases is due to the economy when in reality, they are most likely shopping for the best price available. Don’t be content with existing customers; seriously consider what continues to drive that relationship. Seek to have customers who will actively spread the word about your business. This level of loyalty will not only allow you to keep your customers, but also pick up market share.

2. Maintain Cash Flow and take advantage of liquidity: The old adage that “cash is king” has never been truer than in uncertain times. Proper liquidity certainly helps in any downturn but also maintaining good cash flow with liquidity can enhance buying power as well. We are hearing more and more production facilities are offering improved terms if larger orders are contracted. When not using liquidity to capitalize on economies of scale, don’t overlook secured deposit returns. The current market is paying the largest percentage returns on deposits we have seen in

the last couple of decades. Let those funds work for you.

3. Keep/Develop strong financial relationships: This is a good time to solidify relationships with banks and investors and to be aware of government grants and loans. Unfortunately, the best time to get funding is when you don’t need it. Even if cash flow is sufficient, this may be a good time to sure things up with a line of credit or working capital. Having access to capital will put the business in a position to handle any short-term issues or, better yet, take advantage of opportunities that are often created by economic downturns.

4. Cut costs: Just as your customers are certainly reviewing their operating expenses and making reduction where possible, you should do the same. It’s easy to review large expenses and consider where you may find the greatest impact to cost cutting. Don’t overlook how quickly smaller transaction add up. This is a good time to evaluate subscriptions and services that have been in place for some time to make sure fees haven’t crept up over time or you may even identify items you are paying for you haven’t used in years.

5. Seek to keep good employees: Employee morale and retention always exist together. Cutting a labor force has significantly more impact than just the immediate reduction in expenses. Those companies who can retain employees during an economic downturn are able to recover at a faster rate. In addition, employees end up more invested and loyal. A short-term expense of an employee is significantly cheaper than needing to rehire and retrain a year later.

6. Embrace technology: While technology can’t replace employees in every position, embracing technology for efficiency is critical to long term and short-term success. Many technological offerings can reduce costs, even with a larger upfront fee, while over time the auxiliary benefits can be surprising. Employee morale, time savings, health benefits, and happiness increase when you can improve the quality of work being performed. This could mean investing in new software, automating processes, or shifting to digital marketing channels (another reason to adhere to rule three) just to name a few.

7. Stay proactive and flexible: Opportunity abounds! Most of these points are about protecting your base and being prepared for uncertain times. What can be overlooked is the opportunity available because you are prepared. Remain focused on your core business and what has made you successful, and when opportunity arises be ready to jump on it, if it fits your target market. New opportunities and growth can come from the most unlikely places. Be sure to have trusted advisors who know you and your goals. Your best opportunities could be right in front of you, are you ready to act on them?
