Public Perception and Industry Image- Who Do They Think We Are?

What is public perception?

Do we need to change public perception and improve the image?

The social phenomenon known as public perception can be seen as the difference between an absolute truth based on facts, and a virtual truth shaped by popular opinion, media coverage, and/or reputation.

Corporations and industries all face the same scrutiny by the public they serve. It can be very difficult to overcome a negative perception by the public. While individual companies may strive to do the right things for the right reasons, how the public views an industry, as a whole, can make things much more challenging to put into motion.

Public perception is not necessarily inaccurate or based on something other than the truth. The public at large can often receive enough factual information in order to form a general opinion about an industry without relying on innuendo or unfounded rumors.

There can be instances, however, when the perception of a situation is affected by other issues, such as cultural bias or prejudice, or media involvement.

So… that being said,

What do we want them to know and believe?

How do you change public perception and the image of manufacturing in Utah?

What is the perception of the manufacturing industry in the United States relative to other industries?

It’s been revealed that the vast majority firmly believe that a strong manufacturing industry is crucial to Americans’ standard of living and economic prosperity, as well as the national security of the United States. However, most see our nation’s global competitiveness in manufacturing as stagnant or declining.

There is an ongoing concern about the image of manufacturing and whether it’s hampering efforts to encourage growth. As the share of manufacturing in the economy fell and employment in manufacturing declined sharply over the past 30 years, newspapers appeared to be full of stories of the decline and the rise of the post-industrial society.

What does the public think of manufacturing?

What is our image?

What do they know about it?

According to successive surveys, the image of manufacturing is a major issue. Attraction to careers in manufacturing due to public perception continues to hamper today’s youth and their involvement in the MFGUTAH

industry. The results of the recent Deloitte surveys indicate the public has a nuanced view of manufacturing.

The public believes manufacturing to be high-tech (50% agree) and that the share of manufacturing in the economy needs to increase significantly (72% agree). However, there is low agreement that manufacturing jobs are well paid (16% agree) and a concern that manufacturing jobs are the first to be moved overseas (74% agree).

The results of recent surveys further suggest a number of areas where manufacturing needs to place greater emphasis if it is to be successful in its long-term aim of rebalancing the economy.

Efforts to improve the image of manufacturing should acknowledge that the public has a clear image of manufacturing as being high technology and demanding high levels of skills Future campaigns for manufacturing need to address the current public narrative of low wages, and low job security, so that careers in manufacturing are represented accurately.

The public agrees (62%) that sectors of national importance should be targeted

The picture which emerges from the survey is a subtle one. Showing the public’s view of manufacturing is closer to reality than some pessimistic voices in the media, but also raises concerns about the viability of a rebalancing strategy based on a misinterpretation of how the public thinks about manufacturing.

While there has been an ongoing concern about the image of manufacturing, there has been little evidence on what the public thinks and believes about manufacturing. Most of the discussion is based on anecdotal evidence at worst, and interviews with leaders in the broader manufacturing sector at best.

As we move forward with in-depth discussions, research, data, and reports on what the public, not only nationally, but locally, believe about manufacturing, it is vital we determine what is necessary for us to enhance the industry and begin to fill the pipeline with the increasing needed talent and workforce.

Together as an organization we are making a difference and accomplishing great things for manufacturing in the state of Utah. Because What Utah Makes, Makes Utah.

New Chair of the UMA Board of Directors Clint Morris | Senior Vice President of Marketing, LifeTime Products

My name is Clint Morris. My wife Stephanie and I are proud residents of Layton and parents of three twenty-somethings currently attending both Weber State and USU. I work as the Senior Vice President of Marketing for Lifetime Products, a consumer goods manufacturer in Clearfield. We specialize in producing family-friendly products that bring people together, like basketball hoops, kayaks, coolers, tables and chairs, playsets, and storage sheds. I have been with Lifetime for nearly three decades. I am also in my first term as a member of the Layton City Council. When I’m not involved with these things, you can find me on my road bike cycling through Davis County.

Lifetime Products has been a member of the UMA for more than a decade and I have been a member of the Board of Directors and the Executive Board, now as chair, for almost seven years. Lifetime has benefitted from membership in the UMA primarily for government relations and safety trainings. Our relationship was with the UMA was key as we started to work on federal legislation a few years back in the area of Made in the USA product labeling. We also benefitted, along with many of you, from the tireless 7

efforts a couple of years ago made to exempt manufacturing inputs for all manufacturers in Utah.

As the new Chairman of the Executive Board, I am looking forward to continuing the mission of highlighting and advocating manufacturing’s importance in the State of Utah. It is difficult to manufacture in the United States and even harder here in Utah, but the commitment of Utah manufacturers and attendant economic multiplier in the community creates jobs, high-paying jobs.

This story needs to continue to be told at every level of government in the state. Another area that I would like to see progress is in the area of workforce development. We need to be training the young workforce in the jobs of today. Partnerships with high schools, tech and community colleges, and universities in educating and training for the jobs of today need more attention and funding. Kids need to know that manufacturing is high-paying, exciting, and challenging. And finally, to the small manufacturer, we need you! Please take advantage of all the UMA has to offer. As an organization, we are here for you, as we collectively move forward.

Custom Fit Training: Too Good to Be True?

Custom Fit Program Custom Fit Training offers flexible and customized employee training to businesses in Utah. The program has served employers and employees alike for more than three decades by utilizing a cost-share approach. Available throughout the state through the Utah System of Higher Education institutions, this program stimulates economic vitality and workforce development.

SOLUTION Custom Fit will design training tailored to the company’s request or register employees in a pre-existing training. A Custom Fit representative will coordinate the procurement and training implementation process.

And, to sweeten the deal, Custom Fit assists in funding the training!

What is Custom Fit? Custom Fit supports and provides workforce training to incumbent workers. The intent is to aid in the retention and expansion of Utah companies, attract companies to the state, and train with exact specificity to the employer’s education needs. The company and the Utah System of Higher Education (USHE) partner to accomplish these objectives through joint funding.

Once training objectives are determined, employers connect with their local Custom Fit representative to source the best training options, customizing training to address workforce needs. Company training may be on-site, hosted by the training provider, or at one of many USHE campus locations.

Who may use Custom Fit? For-profit Utah companies are eligible to send W2/ W4 employees through the program.* Examples of how Custom Fit serves Utah businesses: SITUATIONS An up-and-coming business has employees trained in their field, but advanced, up-to-date skillsets need to be improved.

An established business is ready for growth and expansion. The new management team has been selected, but additional leadership training is needed.

Employee Rentention

Employee retention is one of the biggest issues currently facing our workforce. It’s not just about keeping employees happy, it’s more about retaining your talent and keeping them with you as long as possible. Employee turnover is part of any business.

The ability to retain employees from day one helps reduce the hassle of onboarding employees and reduce the waste of time. The higher your turnover rate is, the more costly and detrimental it is to a business. Entry level employees can cost upwards of 50 - 60% of their annual salary to replace.

Employee retention helps boost morale, reduce costs, maintains strong and consistent customer experience, and reduces overhead.

How to retain employees is a question I hear almost every day. Whereas, I have no magic answer, an employee that feels valued by your organization and has opportunities for growth and training is much less likely to leave. Trending numbers say that 76% of employees that do not feel valued will look for another job opportunity. A recent workplace survey report found that 94% of surveyed employees responded that if a company invested in helping them learn, they would stay longer.

Investment in learning opportunities can span from training programs to mentoring. It is important to offer these types of opportunities so that employees feel they have something to look forward to. If these aren’t offered it’s likely it will come to a point where they leave, as they just don’t see a future in your business.

Another thing to consider are career paths and career ladders. These are traditional methods that illustrate to employees a method to develop and progress within an organization. Employees are generally more engaged when they believe that their employer is concerned about their growth and provides roads to reach individual career goals while at the same time fulfilling the company’s mission.

What is employee retention worth? It costs approximately 6 – 9 months of a worker’s annual salary to replace him or her if they leave. So, for an employee that earns $60,000 annually, that comes out to $30,000 - $45,000 in recruiting and training costs.

The average retention rate in manufacturing is right around 71% annually. It is important to remember that retention rate and turnover rate should both be measured to gain a full picture of how your company is doing year over year.

While collecting data is the first step, the real work begins when you identify what needs to be implemented to improve your strategy. The most common reason for high attrition rates is when employees feel they are not being given enough opportunity to grow professionally within the organization. If training for new skills, or opportunity to learn from mistakes doesn’t happen, it will lead to loss of talent.

Loss of talent can ultimately impact your company’s reputation, cause an increase in spending, and hinder workplace culture. Losing high contributors within your organization can be demoralizing and discouraging, it should not be underestimated the profound effect it can have on the colleagues left. Whether it’s loss of camaraderie, or the absorption of the work to compensate for the lost employee, it can cause extreme frustration and further damage the ability to retain employees. Having discouraged employees is every organization’s worst nightmare. Investing in your employee experience is critical for the long-term success of your organization.

Why Train Them if They May Leave Anayway?

Where have all the workers gone? They’ve all gone to work! With an all-time low unemployment rate of 1.9% as of January 21, 2022, everyone who wants to work is working—and business is booming! Michael Jeanfreau, Regional Economist with DWS, recently reported, “In December, we had 32,000 unemployed people (which includes 5,000 on unemployment benefits) in the state of Utah. However, in the last six months, we’ve seen just under 150,000 job postings.”

These numbers do not align well with those needing to find workers.

Statistics would likely show that manufacturing has been hit the hardest due to the lack of available skilled workers. The only people applying for jobs are those unhappy with their current employment; therefore, shouldn’t we focus time and energy on keeping the ones we have and developing their skills into what we are hoping to hire?

We hear about resistance in training employees such as insufficient staff to cover shifts, too expensive, or “why train them, if they may leave anyway?” The truth is, if we don’t put time and money into developing employees’ skills and providing opportunities for advancement, someone else will. With training, we are investing in our employees—increasing their value while increasing the company’s value and reputation as a great place to work. Training and development will strengthen employee loyalty, improve 25

productivity, lower mistakes, and boost morale.

Unlike what we may have heard, training and education can be very affordable, flexible, and customized to our needs. Here are a few options to consider: 1.

Continuing Education or Occupational Upgrade Training. Typically, short-term, non-accredited training focused on providing skills quickly, in person or online. An inexpensive option that helps get the momentum started.

2. Custom Fit Training. This flexible, customized training program is designed to provide Utah’s workforce with both advanced and up-to-date skills training. Utah state funds are allocated to subsidize for-profit companies for the training of their employees. Industry experts teach courses at the location of the company’s choosing and are conveniently scheduled to meet their needs.

Hybrid options are available.

3. Apprenticeships. Either customized, registered, or informal—these don’t have to be difficult and can be very beneficial in the long run. Apprenticeships (registered or not) typically include formal education combined with on-the-job training.

4. Stackable Credentials. Stackable credentialing is at the heart of discussions in education, both in the technical college space and the traditional higher education system. As we examine how to

give employees the best possible shot at a thriving career, it may require ongoing learning with technical and more academic opportunities.
