In a word…..VALUE.

GR and advocacy have always been the bedrock of the UMA. Group influence and the power to change an environment are stronger than at the individual level. Associations are the hub where individuals organize their resources, plan their strategies, and assign action items. Some thought social media would gradually replace “brick and mortar” associations, but while platforms like Facebook and LinkedIn make it easier to recognize connections, they haven’t displaced the power of good old-fashioned face-toface meetings to make lasting change happen. We have been actively lobbying the Utah legislature as well as state and federal regulatory agencies since 1905. Our reputation, expertise, and respect are unparalleled within the industry in the state and nationally. We track more than 125 bills each session so you can continue to “make Utah’s economy” by manufacturing products.

So what does that mean? What is value? Well it’s definitely is simple. The regard that something is held to deserve; the importance, worth, or usefulness of something. Value, however, means something different to many different people or organizations. Over the years in association management, I’ve come to understand that more completely. Larger companies might have an interest in advocacy, governmental affairs and relations, and being the watchdog for the manufacturing industry. Smaller companies will likely need assistance from affinity-type programs which offer discounts and group opportunities for cost savings etc. Companies want venues to learn from other organizations that might have been through the same types of challenges and opportunities. They also want and need different types of training depending on which stage or size of the manufacturing company they are currently in. Roundtable opportunities are important as well as mentoring other companies and individuals within the industry.

Training and Resources No one finishes school, an apprenticeship, or other formal education completely prepared to handle every project that will come their way over the course of a career. But going back to school to learn new skills can be expensive. Associations fill that gap between doing nothing and paying thousands for more higher education. Because they’re a hub for

brainpower and funds, associations have the ability to produce a variety of educational settings and tools that fit the educational needs of many. Areas like our frontline leader training Academy. Our HR Academy and training series, monthly safety trainings, as well as round table discussions and financial conversations, are critical to assisting companies to advance their knowledge and skills.

Networking

Training both for upper management mid-management and frontline workers has become a critical need as well. As companies advance team members into different roles within organizations, the need to provide them with training skills necessary to succeed is an important value stream.

Sure, The last couple of years during the pandemic have pushed us towards meeting online and doing more virtually, but the digital connections aren’t always as strong as those we make in person.

Workforce Development Better lives and the strengthening of teams, families, and communities begin with successful businesses and strong, competent employees. Our workforce development efforts strive to build a robust, diverse economy by bringing business and the workforce together. We connect workers with the tools they need to learn and upgrade skills and match them with employers’ needs. In today’s economy, the need to focus on talent acquisition and tower retention is critical in advancing the manufacturing industry both locally and across the nation. As Utah continues to be healthy and has an extremely low unemployment rate, 1.8% unemployment simply exacerbates the challenge of identifying, locating, training, hiring, and retaining good talent that advances the manufacturing industry.

Associations are the original social media network: Meet with like-minded professionals interested in the same issues as you. Gather and share content that enlightens, educates, and entertains. Discover connections within your own manufacturing industry and local governmental community.

Why Multiple Employer Plans are Changing the Retirement Plan Industry Altura Financial Advisors

Disruption has occurred in every industry for centuries. Whether it’s Tesla’s robust form of powering a vehicle, or Netflix’s rise of television streaming apps, there will always be an appetite for disruption in the consumer world in which we live. In the history of retirement plans, public policy has been the catalyst for change. Most recently, the Secure Act of 2020 fundamentally altered the nature of Multiple Employer Plans (MEPs) which changed the future of how retirement plans are designed and delivered. In today’s retirement plan industry, single employer plans can be costly and burdensome to administer. These plans also put the plan sponsors and trustees at risk because they often don’t understand their own fiduciary responsibilities. MEPs are changing the market because they address many of the inherent weaknesses found in single employer plans. Through a MEP, companies access simplicity, economies of scale, and best in-class investment options for plan participants. MEP providers will not only act as an outsourced Chief Information Officer, taking on ERISA 3(21) fiduciary status, but also a fiduciary on the administrative and custody aspects of the plan. 7

WHAT IS A MEP? A MEP is a retirement plan for businesses that typically have a common interest but are not commonly owned or affiliated. These businesses are referred to as adopting employers when they elect to join the MEP. The plan adopters pool their assets together to gain economies of scale while gaining added values typically only offered to mega- sized plans. Each adopting company, however, enjoys the flexibility of creating their own tailored plan design while only having access to their plan specific information.

UMA’s Health Plan Option By Todd Valentine, Select Health

On January 1, 2016 the Utah Manufactures Association (UMA) launched the UMA Association Health Plan in collaboration with Beehive Insurance and Select Health. On that day in January there were only 6 groups that stepped forward to help get that program launched. As of this article all 6 groups are still participating in the program. Fast forward to today and the numbers above show the current enrollment data for the program. The UMA Association Health Plan is now the largest Association Health Plan (AHP) in the State of Utah. Here are the “Who, What, Where, and Why’s” of this amazing program, and why it might matter to YOU: Who: The UMA AHP was designed for groups with 2 to 100 employees that work in the manufacturing industry. To participate in the program you must be a member of the UMA. However, groups can get a quote anytime regardless of active membership. Groups must also be domiciled in Utah to qualify. What: The UMA AHP is a large group Medical pool designed to offer large group benefits, composite rates, and the ability to medically underwrite for risk. This underwriting method provides most groups a reduction in premiums and, at the same time, 15

improve the coverage they can offer employees. The program offers 9 total plans (5 traditional copay style plans and 4 HSA plans) on 2 Select Health networks, including the National network for any remote workforce through United Healthcare. Where: This is a statewide program for groups headquartered in Utah. From Logan to St. George to Vernal, this program is available to all eligible groups. The UMA has also partnered with multiple agents and agencies to help sell and support this program throughout the State. Why: The number one reason that 117 groups have joined the UMA AHP is cost. With the ability to medically underwrite groups, most groups see a reduction in the overall premium cost. Not all groups see the same savings. Groups with high claims or significant health risk may not benefit from the medical underwriting and may continue to use the small group market where there is no underwriting required. The second reason for groups to participate is the coverage. The UMA AHP offers some of the best coverage available. Participating groups can now compete with much larger organizations in both plan cost and coverage.

When it comes to workplace loss control and spending your safety budget, there are several techniques you can employ to make sure you get the most bang for your buck. A great place to start is understanding where your losses are currently coming from so you can target those areas when you’re prioritizing safety resources.

In addition to studying your own claims experience, it’s useful to be familiar with overall loss trends in the manufacturing industry. Reduce Losses from Struck-By Accidents The majority of struck-by accidents are the result of being hit by heavy equipment (such as forklifts) or being struck by falling or flying objects.
