An education that’s anything but general
Our Cognates Program of General Education lets you tailor your curriculum to your interests and academic goals, making your education more engaging and effective. The cognates program comprises three Areas of Knowledge— Arts and Humanities, People and Society, and STEM. Cognates, which are a set of three (or more) courses that share a common theme or focus, are used in conjunction with your major to help shape an education that reflects the breadth and depth of your unique interests.
Explore your options at cognates.miami.edu.

LITERATURE FOR LAW SCHOOL
Katherine Rodgers knows she wants to pursue law after graduating with her bachelor’s degree. As a double major in English and criminology, she discovered how a unique opportunity to tackle a senior thesis project could help her down the road. Her thesis would not only allow her to graduate with honors, but it would also show law school admission committees that she’s experienced and knowledgeable in writing and research. Under the guidance of Dr. Tassie K. Gwilliam, Katherine’s inquiry centers on 17th- and 18th-century women’s literature, specifically Eliza Haywood and Aphra Behn. The politics and culture of the 1600s and 1700s informed much of the authors’ commentary, so Katherine sought out additional sources to explore what those works, their praises, and critiques say about women’s experiences in the Reformation Age. When her project is complete, Katherine will be able to submit her work to be published in a scholarly journal. Until then, she wants her efforts to show future law schools how capable she is to put in the work and close the case.

CARBON BUDGETING, BUT BETTER
Computer and marine science double major Isaiah Wang is applying AI and machine learning to ocean and climate research as a fellow at the Frost Institute for Data Science and Computing through a partnership with the Rosenstiel School. He works with Dr. Mariana Bif, who studies data from autonomous ocean robots called Argo floats—think of them as ocean “Fitbits” that track its “vitals.” Every 10 days, these floats send data via satellite to global databases, where scientists like Isaiah and Dr. Bif access and analyze it. Using data from a float south of Hawaii, Isaiah applies his coding skills to study how carbon moves through the ocean, create visualizations, and use machine learning to estimate what the data would look like at finer time scales (for example, every five days instead of 10). His goal is to better measure carbon flux in this region and improve how scientists track it globally, helping produce more reliable data for Earth’s climate budget.

I chose UM because it was the place I saw the most opportunities to develop myself. I get to be involved in every step of the work I’m doing with the Miami Project. I help with the procedures in the lab, I collect the data, and then I analyze it afterward. Being able to see the entire process has shown me how research can lead to real medical advances.”
—CALVIN ILLESCAS
exercise physiology and health science, Miami, FL
Calvin was motivated by an early interest in rehabilitation and medicine after experiencing an injury of his own. Determined to shift his narrative into one of empowerment, Calvin joined the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis as an undergraduate researcher studying how spinal cord injuries disrupt blood pressure regulation. In Dr. Patrick D. Ganzer’s lab, he assists with experimental procedures and analyzes data that help researchers evaluate therapies designed to restore mobility and stabilize cardiovascular function. He plans to attend medical school and pursue a career improving outcomes for neurocardiology patients.

A legacy written in orange and green
Being a student at the University of Miami means you’re a Cane through and through. Our campus community is full of team spirit and rich traditions. These are just a few.
Count on the Band of the Hour to hype up the crowd as we cheer on our fellow Canes. The Band of the Hour is well known for its pregame and halftime performances at Hurricane football games.

Homecoming
Homecoming is a time for all students, alumni, and friends to come together to celebrate being a Cane! The week’s events include one of the largest service days of the year, a spirit day, a block party, and fireworks around Lake Osceola. It all leads up to the year’s biggest football game.
The “U”
A classic since the 1970s, Canes from nearly all generations rep their pride all over the world by showing off this symbol. We dare you to throw the U and see what happens the next time you see someone in Cane gear.
Sebastian the Ibis
The local marsh bird is believed to be the last sign of wildlife to take shelter before a hurricane and first to reappear after the storm. Today, Sebastian is one of the most recognizable college sports mascots in the United States. No matter what, the University’s biggest fan is always ready to lead a C-A-N-E-S cheer.
Colors
University of Miami students eat, breathe, and live orange, green, and white, colors taken from the Florida orange tree and blossom.

During my time at UM, I met people who are now business partners, referral sources, and even clients. I never imagined the classmates sitting beside me would one day be beside me in meetings, but that’s the power of this University. ”
—DEWAYNE WASHINGTON II finance, Class of 2020 Vice President at JP Morgan Private Bank
Dewayne originally came to the University of Miami hungry for the student-athlete experience. Walking onto the Miami Hurricanes football team his first year, he stood up to the immense challenge of balancing academics with athletics. But the whispering call of life outside of college sports was too intriguing for him to ignore. He hung up his helmet and pads and, at the suggestion of Professor Mark Shapiro, attended an information session by Citibank representatives. Six months later, he wound up interning for the bank. The rest, as they say, is history.
