Storytelling Magic Comes to Hillsborough Castle this Summer

This summer the air is ‘humming’ with ‘hunny’ as a new literary experience awaits in the 100-acre gardens of Hillsborough Castle, with live storytelling sessions from ten celebrated children’s authors set to transform the grounds into a storybook wonderland during the Disney Winnie the Pooh Hunny Hunt trail.

Historic Royal Palaces, the charity that cares for Hillsborough Castle and Gardens, in collaboration with Disney and the Royal Literary Fund (RLF), will introduce a series of magical weekly storytelling sessions hosted by authors from across the UK and Ireland.

From 28th June to 31st August, a new author will bring the world of the Hundred Acre Wood to life each week in the enchanting setting of Owl’s Book Corner. Reading classic Winnie the Pooh tales and excerpts from their own children’s books, each author will captivate, inspire and delight avid readers and ramblers of all ages.

Among the featured writers are Jane Riordan, author of Winnie the Pooh Meets The King and Once There Was a Bear, and authors from the RLF including Sheena Wilkinson, Amanda Swift, Jasbinder Bilan, Sophie Kirtley, Jim Beckett, Anna Wilson, Teresa Heapy, Maisie Chan and Michael Mann. Each author will bring their unique storytelling magic to the gardens, creating a memorable experience for the whole family to enjoy.

Little explorers and lifelong fans alike can set off on a delightful adventure to track down ten hidden ‘hunny’ pots tucked away in the lush greenery of the Castle gardens – because

in classic Pooh Bear style, he’s forgotten where they all are and needs help to find them!

The Winnie the Pooh trail will start by collecting a map, pencil and Pooh stick from the entrance and continue to be filled with charming moments along the way, inspired by Winnie the Pooh and friends, from Piglet’s Cosy Burrow to Rabbit’s Garden.

After the trail, adventurers can delight in discovering and purchasing Winnie the Pooh treasures – from timeless storybooks and soothing English teas to cuddly soft toys that bring the magic of the Hundred Acre Wood to life.

With Kids Go Free to the gardens all summer long and daily storytelling, led by the Castle’s public engagement assistants, continuing alongside the author sessions, visitors can bask in fresh air and timeless tales, with plenty of space to roam, read and play at Hillsborough Castle and Gardens.

Beloved by generations, Disney’s Winnie the Pooh publishing collection offers a charming range of storybooks, activity titles, and audio editions that celebrate friendship, curiosity, and the timeless magic of the Hundred Acre Wood – and continues to inspire warmth, imagination, and a deep emotional connection among fans of all ages.

GreenThumb launches revolutionary hard surface treatments across the UK

GreenThumb, the UK’s largest lawn care service, announced the nationwide rollout of its groundbreaking Hard Surface Treatments – the latest innovation designed to restore, revive and renew both commercial and residential outdoor spaces.

After successful customer trials, piloted with franchise partners across the UK, GreenThumb is expanding its service offering beyond lawns, reinforcing its position as a holistic out-of-home care provider. The Hard Surface Treatments bring a unique, sustainable solution to homeowners, businesses, and local authorities looking to rejuvenate outdoor surfaces without using harsh chemicals or invasive methods.

GreenThumb’s Hard Surface Treatments include a multi-purpose, plant and mineral based product that progressively cleans hard surfaces over time, without the need for jet washing, scrubbing, or harsh

chemicals. Suitable for a wide range of surfaces including patios, paths, decking and driveways, it offers a safe and eco-conscious choice for both public and private use.

Customers have said “I didn’t believe this would work” and “The results speak for themselves”, noting the no-prep, no-postclean-up experience as a game-changer. The product works gradually, capturing dirt in the crystals it forms, ensuring that surfaces are cleaned without damage or disruption, which makes it perfect for homeowners as well as commercial and municipal hard surfaces, like car parks or amenity spaces.

The new service marks a significant milestone in GreenThumb’s journey to diversify its offerings. By addressing not only lawn health but also the cleanliness and longevity of hardscapes, GreenThumb is reshaping what it means to care for outdoor spaces.

Paul Edwards, managing director of

GreenThumb, said: “We’re thrilled to bring our Hard Surface Treatment to all our customers and to extend our services to commercial clients through our UK-wide network. Alongside our Hard Surface Weed Control, our treatments’ innovation reflects our commitment to sustainability, effectiveness, and making outdoor care simple for everyone. It’s the next natural step in expanding GreenThumb’s vision.”

GreenThumb has also launched an advertising campaign for its Hard Surface Treatment which will run until the end of August across ITV channels via ITVx, to further widen its reach and relevance. The messaging will also appear across YouTube and Meta channels, Facebook and Instagram.

A New Chapter in Heritage Stays

At Mount Congreve Gardens, one of Ireland’s most captivating estates, a quiet transformation has been underway, one that pays tribute to heritage while embracing a new era of thoughtful, restorative travel. Set against the gentle hum of bees, amongst the blooms and the dappled shade of ancient trees, the estate’s last three remaining historic gate lodges, ‘Rowan’, ‘Oak’, and ‘Acorn’ have emerged from a decade of dereliction to offer guests an intimate invitation into one of Ireland’s most storied gardens.

Once derelict and forgotten, these small architectural gems have been sensitively restored, their character intact and their spirit rekindled. Original timbers and stonework now meet warm textures, antique finds, and considered comforts for guests to enjoy.

Rowan Gate Lodge, also known as Brett’s or Kennedy’s Lodge, stood empty for over a decade. Its revival has been nothing short of a labour of love. Beneath a newly laid roof and within walls painted in rich heritage greens, guests will find a retreat marked by elegance and restraint. A Louis XV bed rests beneath Waterford Crystal lighting, while curated antiques speak to the lodge’s place in the estate’s lineage. A dedicated Dog Room, complete with beds, bowls, and toys from Irish maker Country Pet, continues Mount Congreve’s longstanding affection for fourlegged visitors. Just beyond the front door, private access to the gardens after hours makes every stay a personal encounter with nature.

Inside the estate walls themselves, Oak and Acorn Gate Lodges form a pair of interconnecting hideaways nestled among the garden paths. These one-bedroom cottages, once home to the estate’s gatekeepers, are now havens of considered design and natural charm. Oak Lodge is quietly confident, its mustard walls and deep roll-top bath offering a cocoon of comfort. Oak worktops, heritage cabinetry, and a secluded dining terrace lend themselves to long, slow evenings surrounded by garden scents and stillness.

Acorn Lodge, painted in a soft Florentine red, leans toward the romantic. A gramophone hums beneath vintage sconces, while sunlit living spaces invite reading, resting, or nothing at all. The two lodges can be enjoyed separately or combined to create a private two-bedroom residence for families or friends — a space where the rhythms of the estate become the pace of daily life.

Further afield, though still within the quiet embrace of the gardens, Meadow Glamping returns for summer 2025. Hidden in a lush green meadow, off-grid bell tents blend wilderness with comfort. Here, the luxuries are of a gentler kind with FOXFORD wool throws, wood-burning stoves, and the hush of evening birdsong. The tents have no electricity, no running water, yet everything needed is here, featuring solar lanterns, coolers for fresh food, and the rare peace that comes from sleeping in step with nature.

Whether gathered around a fire, wandering woodland paths, or cycling along the Waterford Greenway, guests are

invited not just to stay, but to be still. Each visit includes garden access, bicycles for exploring, and the welcome of a place that honours beauty, privacy and time.

Recognition for Mount Congreve’s approach to slow, meaningful travel continues to grow. Now featured on Room + Wild, the globally respected platform for nature-based stays, and part of the Tourism Cares Meaningful Travel Program, the estate is quietly establishing itself as a sanctuary for those seeking sustainability without sacrifice, connection without intrusion. These partnerships celebrate the gardens not only as a horticultural landmark but as a living, breathing invitation to experience Ireland with intention.

Alongside the newly restored lodges and Meadow Glamping, guests may also choose from the elegant Courtyard Suite in Mount Congreve House or the Forest Cabins, designed with families in mind. Each space opens into the gardens.

It is recommended to set aside at least three hours to fully take in the expansive three-in-one attraction, cared for since 2018 by the Irish Heritage Trust, an independent non-profit organisation.

• Johnstown Castle Tour – with Irish Heritage Trust volunteer guides offering insights into

centuries of Irish history and architectural splendour (pre-booking recommended).

• The Irish Agricultural Museum – located beside the visitor centre, featuring handson exhibits and artefacts that celebrate

the lives and traditions of Ireland’s farming communities.

Improvements and conservation work undertaken in recent years by the Irish Heritage Trust have enhanced the visitor experience. These include the completion of Phase 3 of the Walled Garden, conservation of the Richardson Glasshouse, and 900m of new, wheelchair- and buggy-friendly paths— bringing the total accessible trail length to 2.5km. Tourism Ireland’s #IrelandUnrushed campaign celebrates experiences that allow for deeper engagement with Ireland’s people, places, and landscapes. It promotes a regenerative travel philosophy—one where guests can pause, breathe, and truly connect with the culture and nature around them.

The BBQ Takeover

Why do you think barbecuing has become such a popular way of cooking?

I think barbecuing has become a popular way of cooking for a number of reasons. Firstly, flavour: you won’t get the same type of flavour from cooking inside. The social experience: people being able to cook with each other and enjoy the ambience of a Braai (South African Term for BBQ). The versatility: using a BBQ allows for a wide variety of cooking techniques unlike anything else. Outdoor appeal: statistically most people feel better by being outside, so to cook outside helps with your wellbeing. Finally, for the novice, technological developments have made things easier than to just reach for an instant BBQ from the local petrol station.

When did you first get into barbecuing?

I have always been interested in barbecuing, but probably got properly into it during the Covid pandemic. I struggled for a long time to find a new hobby after giving up rugby many years ago due to injuries. When I found barbecuing I realised there was so much to learn that I’d always be kept busy. I’m a girldad of three, all under five. Initially I thought of the BBQ shack as a place to get a break from the women in the house, but now we

actually use it as an opportunity to spend family time together. My five-year-old is quite the pro when it comes to making cookies on the BBQ. When your daughter asks to do some cooking in the shack rather than watch TV it’s definitely a refreshing comment to hear.

What type of BBQ would you recommend for anyone starting out this summer?

I am predominantly a charcoal griller, simply for the flavour it provides and the real natural feel of cooking meat over fire. That said I still enjoy firing up a gas BBQ for a quick burger now and again. A great way to get into barbequing is a Kettle Grill. These models have been around for such a long time due to the simple fact the design works. Think more than just burgers and sausages when it

What has been your favourite meal that you have created on the BBQ?

There are so many, but for me something  I do a lot of is cooking steak. There is nothing better than getting a proper fire on the go and letting those flames kiss the fat of a juicy tomahawk. Living my best life with a massive chunk of beef on a bone like a proper caveman. I never buy steak when I go out for dinner because I honestly believe you can cook a better one yourself over fire at home at a fraction of the cost.

What do you love most about Go BBQ Co and their products?

When you come to Go BBQ Co you are getting more than just a BBQ. A wealth of knowledge is available to you in a non-pushy fashion. No question is a silly question and you genuinely will feel like you are joining a community. When you leave with your new grill you’ll always be able to get advice at the touch of a button should you need it. The products available are top quality and highend and not something that will rust after one season.

What are your top do’s and don’ts when it comes to barbecuing?

The first is to always cook to temperature. BBQs have a wide range of temperatures, especially when cooking with lump wood charcoal; some areas of the BBQ could be hotter than others. I always advise getting an instant read thermometer to ensure food is cooked through from a health and safety perspective, but also as a guide when cooking large cuts of meat: when to take it off the grill and let it rest.

The second would be to try indirect cooking on a charcoal BBQ. One of the biggest reasons people don’t get into charcoal barbecuing is because they always burn their food. By having two zones in the

BBQ you can move your food without the chance of anything burning. Finally, invest in a charcoal chimney starter. People always complain that it takes forever to get the BBQ coals ready. Using a BBQ chimney starter has the coals ready in 10 minutes.

People associate BBQs with summer, but would you use it all year round?

Summer BBQs are some of my least favourite, and the reason for it is everyone just expects a burger or a sausage. I use  my BBQs all year round, from breakfast in the snow, to Christmas dinner in my BBQ shack.  We moved house a couple of years ago and cooked nearly every meal on our BBQ when we moved in because there was a delay with our cooker delivery. But even now the Rangemaster sits looking at us feeling left out. For a long time I used to grill with an umbrella as many of my followers will remember; thankfully now I have a large shack that allows me to stay dry and warm during the cold and wet seasons.

What is unexpected or underrated to cook on a BBQ?

I’ll give anything a go, from garlic snails, to honey chilli rabbit. I cooked up some rabbit tacos a couple of weeks ago that went down a treat. My daughter and I also cooked up some frog legs in garlic butter, which were a real hit. An underrated cook would be a rotisserie chicken. It’s such a simple thing, place a chicken on a rotisserie and let it baste in its own juices over fire. A favourite in our house is faking a well-known chicken joint – we make it 10 times better than the actual place. We call it “FAKEANDO’s”.

Whiskey Wars will be brought back to

Belfast as Joyce Greenway takes to the stage at the Deer’s Head Music Hall.

Opulence and Historic Tastings: Across the Cathedral Quarter we have lots of historic and vintage whiskey tastings, as well as high-end tastings, that will not be replicated anywhere in the world. Belfast is full of whiskey history, and we love sharing this. Get around the city with our bespoke walking tours; two every day that allow you to taste the best food and drinks the city has to offer. You’ll have a cheeky wee ice-pop courtesy of Wavey Ice, a whiskey donut and a whiskey chocolate from Daises.
