If you call to Restex Beds & Furniture in Letterkenny these days, you’d be forgiven if you thought you were on the set of a well-known comedy programme. Restex Beds in Letterkenny have just announced that actor Derek Reddin will be heading up their sales team. Derek, best known for playing Dr Flynn in the multi award winning BBC comedy Mrs Browns Boys will be working as sales director at Restex Beds in between acting engagements. The collaboration is not as unusual as you may think, as Derek happens to have decades of experience in the furniture and interior retail business. Dermot Doherty, managing director of Restex said, we are celebrating 50 years in business next year, and we are delighted to welcome Derek on board. He has the experience, the charisma, and the personality that will make shopping here a delight, we have already received very positive feedback from some of our customers. Derek, a native of Dublin, but who has made Donegal his home for the past 20 years, said: “We moved to

I’m absolutely over the moon to be joining Dermot and the team at Restex, it’s a very professional outfit, that prides itself on delivering quality and service that is second to none. “Don’t be surprised if you get a prescription as well as a sales receipt, he said with a laugh, if the doctor orders you to bed, it has to be a Restex bed. “Joking aside I love the history of this company, Grandfather Dermot’s Paddy Doherty who hailed from Burt in Donegal, was making mattresses by hand in the 1940’s for the wholesale business. “So to say that the business is in Dermot’s veins would be an understatement. He has a strong passion for the business, which I really like, plus he takes great pride in turning out quality products. In 1987 Dermot’s Father Terence and his Mother Rosemary took the business to a whole new level when they opened Restex to the retail customers of Donegal and surrounding areas. “The first retail store was at the same location in

Over the years they have sold countless beds and mattresses to satisfied customers. they have thousands of returning customers, who will only buy their beds from Restex. This is a testament to the great quality and excellent service that is a given at Restex. “I’m very much a people person, said Derek with a jovial smile, and I’m looking forward to meeting and chatting with the Restex customers, or anyone who drops in to say hello.” Restex Beds & Furniture are situated at Mountain Top Letterkenny, They are manufacturers of high-quality bedding and furnishings, made by the cream of Irish craftsman in their on-site factory workshop. EDITOR’S LETTER

EDITOR: Christopher Sherry

(Don’t) Do It Yourself

DEPUTY EDITOR: Joanne Harkness EDITORIAL MANAGER: James Sherry SALES & MARKETING MANAGERS: Lorraine Gill Gerry Waddell

Spring is traditionally a time when we tend to start eyeing up those jobs around the house that we have been putting off for months. I must confess that I am pretty useless at DIY. I can just about hang a picture… sometimes. I tried to do exactly that a few weeks ago and ended up knocking a large lump of plaster off the wall. Maybe it was something to do with using the wrong type of nail? Who knows? I certainly don’t. In my defence, part of the problem is that I carry out these tasks so infrequently I haven’t gained enough experience to develop the necessary skills or learnt how to avoid the common pitfalls. Having said that, I do have a tendency to tear in without spending some time beforehand planning how to do the job properly. The availability of DIY YouTube videos has, however, been a godsend. No matter how obscure the task you are undertaking or the product you are working with, there is seemingly a YouTube video somewhere, usually featuring some American dude, talking you through how not to make a complete mess of it. So, no excuses; in the coming weeks expect to find me perched precariously up a ladder somewhere, tinkering with something.

COLUMN April 2024

LIFE & TIMES EDITED BY KATHY CLUGSTON

Kathy Clugston is a freelance radio presenter. She chairs the long-running BBC Radio 4 programme ‘Gardeners’ Question Time’ and presents the weekly entertainment show ‘The Ticket’ on BBC Radio Ulster.

Rise Of The Robots This month, Kathy delves into the world of artificial intelligence and chat robots. Greetings, dearest readers! It’s Kathy Clugston here, your trusty guide through the latest happenings in our beloved Ulster. As we waltz into the vibrant month of April, let’s wrap ourselves snugly in the tales of community, culture, and, of course, a dash of that quintessential Ulster charm. Notice anything strange? Does anything strike you as a bit off? Let me continue. First and foremost, let’s raise a collective toast to the resilience of our local businesses. From the bustling streets of Belfast to the quaint corners of the countryside, our entrepreneurs continue to weave their magic, offering us a kaleidoscope of delights to savour. So, whether it’s a leisurely browse through a craft fair or a sumptuous feast at a hidden gem of a restaurant, let’s cherish these treasures that add sparkle to our daily lives. Seriously, does this sound like me? I hope not, because I didn’t write it. I’ve been feeling under the weather with this hundredday cough that’s been going around and wondered if I could use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to save me some time and energy. I asked ChatGPT, the most well known AI chatbot, if it could “write an Ulster Tatler column in the style of Kathy Clugston”. It took about 20 seconds to generate (although it did come in a bit shorter than I would have liked.) Here’s how it continues: Now, let’s delve into the arts scene, shall we? April beckons with promises of captivating performances and thoughtprovoking exhibitions. Whether you’re a seasoned art aficionado or a curious soul dipping your toes into the cultural waters, there’s something for everyone. So, let your imagination take flight as you immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of creativity that

our local artists weave with such finesse. And what about the great outdoors, you ask? Ah, fear not, dear reader, for Ulster’s natural splendour stands ready to embrace us with open arms. As the days grow longer and the air carries the sweet whispers of spring, let’s venture forth into the embrace of nature. From invigorating hikes along rugged trails to leisurely strolls through picturesque gardens, there’s no shortage of adventures waiting to be had. The writing does make sense – sort of – but I am a bit concerned that ChatGPT has interpreted ‘my style’ as using a lot of words to say absolutely nothing of any significance whatsoever. I shall have to reflect on that. AI has now moved out of the realms of science fiction and into our everyday lives. You may not realise how much you already use it: if your phone recognises your face, if you use online maps to plot your journey, if you watch something recommended for you on a streaming service, if you ask your smart speaker to turn off the lights, that’s AI at work and its applications are increasing by the day. While big tech companies are keen to stress the positives, such as better medical diagnostics, robot surgery, instant translation into other languages, automating repetitive tasks and so on, many of us are concerned

about the impact it will have on our lives in future, especially in terms of employment, creative expression and relationships. Sex robots and self-driving cars make for eyecatching headlines but on a more basic level AI is already being used to compose music, design logos, write copy - sometimes very badly but the machines are learning, learning, learning all the time. How much of our lives we are willing to cede to processes that lack any real emotion, empathy or creativity remains to be seen. But there’s no doubt it’s a subject we’ll soon be unable to ignore. In the meantime I’m going to have a lie down and let the technology sign off for me – with a rallying cry. So, dear readers, as we bid adieu to the winter chill and welcome the warmth of spring with open arms, let’s savour each moment, each encounter, and each opportunity to make memories that will linger long after the blossoms have faded. Until next time, take care and keep the Ulster spirit burning bright!

THIS MONTH’S OBSESSIONS: Kiki Dee – I saw her perform in Belfast last month with her musical partner, guitarist Carmelo Luggeri. They reinterpreted Kiki’s 1970s hits and played some of their own beautiful songs. Check out their most recent album The Long Ride Home.

hiskey collectors and connoisseurs gathered at the Dark Horse in Belfast to celebrate the unveiling by Bushmills of a ‘once in a lifetime’ 36-year-old whiskey, the Hill Street Edition, created exclusively for famous Belfast whiskey shop, The Friend at Hand. The exclusive bottling pays homage to Hill Street, home to the original headquarters of Bushmills, the oldest licenced whiskey distillery in the world, and where The Friend at Hand stands today. Bonded warehouses once lined Belfast’s Hill Street, and Bushmills barrels would have rolled down its now iconic cobbles to ships docked on the Farset River to be transported to destinations around the globe. The Hill Street Edition is the oldest rarest whiskey Bushmills has ever sold in Europe, and only 208 bottles exist. Guests including Q Radio presenter Ibe Sesay attended the launch celebrations. To commemorate this milestone, they hosted a “Top of the SWOTs” fashion show in the Whitla Hall on Sunday 10th March. This event was an evening of style, solidarity and support for their cause.

Travelling abroad for dental treatment:

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW An increasing number of people from this part of the world are travelling abroad to undertake lower-cost dental treatments which they could not otherwise afford at home. We have all, however, heard the warnings around the risks involved in availing of such services far from home. If you are thinking about going abroad for dental work, it is essential that you consider a range of factors other than just cost e.g. a clinic’s reputation with other overseas patients, the qualifications of the practitioners, your rights and protections in the country of treatment should something go wrong. Before committing to treatment, you must receive a fully costed treatment plan including information on any risks associated with the treatment and details of follow-up care. Kreativ Dental Clinic in Budapest, Hungary has been treating patients from Ireland and around the world for over 20 years. Mary Flanagan, the clinic’s representative in Ireland, outlined that the clinic has an expert team of dental specialists offering high-quality care using state-of-the-art technology. They have a proven track record when it comes to patient safety and quality of treatment and, importantly, there is an after-care service in Ireland. Planning for overseas treatment can take some time and effort but it is crucial that you get the right advice and support beforehand. Ideally, speak to someone who has travelled to the clinic before; Mary Flanagan of Kreativ Dental Clinic is a former patient herself and will happily share her experiences and answer any questions. The clinic offers a free consultation, including an OPG X-ray and a full breakdown of the treatment plan. It is then your decision if you wish to proceed with treatment or not.

Jane Hardy is a feature writer who has interviewed a few of the big names from Arlene Foster to Mrs Thatcher.

BY JANE HARDY

Feeling Groovy Ibe Sesay talks disco, fame, prejudice, The Groovy Train reunion tour and family with Jane Hardy.

T

aking coffee with Ibe Sesay (43), Q Radio’s Drivetime presenter, in a Caffe Nero downtown is something of an event. A punter wants to congratulate him and shake his hand. He’s happy to engage but says his four children find this “embarrassing”. On the plus side, they get the celeb-relative benefits. “They can get tickets to things, and if a friend has a birthday, a shout-out on the programme, as my daughter Mollie’s friend Aoife did recently.” Pronounced Abe, Ibe’s first name is Abraham which he shares with his Sierra Leonean father. “Like Abe Lincoln. It’s spelt with an I, like my father. My wife Colleen’s grandfather always called me E-bay like the shopping.” Sesay’s programme, the commuters’ soundtrack, is relaxed, amiable, rather like the man himself. “We’re there as a friend, a mate, kind of in the background when you’re doing the school run or coming back from work.” On Tuesday of the week we talked, he encouraged a dog walker named Carol to win the quiz and added Ed Sheeran to some upbeat covers. What will keep his medium going, he says, is longevity. And relevance to different listeners. “There are three or four commercial stations here, each with their own demographic. Cool has a younger demographic,. U105 an older demographic, we’re somewhere in the middle which suits my age.” Although, as Sesay points out, he’s been in the game fourteen years and is no longer the newbie. The sweatiest moment in his career came a few years ago. “I was in the studio on my own and a member of Boyzone dropped by. The door flew open, I was presenting, and it was Keith Duffy, promoting a new barber’s shop. On a whim I asked him if he’d like a wee chat. He said yes, and I went ‘Here’s a member of Boyzone, Keith Duffy.’ He

35

said it was great to be here, adding ‘There’s just one thing, I’m Shane Lynch.’ Live, on air. I wanted the ground to open up. He told me it happened all the time and I got my interview about life after the band, all the good stuff.” There is a playlist, he says. “Yeah, it’s helpful as long as the music’s good, but I do have input and occasionally have said I don’t want to play something.” He won’t give examples, adding: “We’re a commercial radio station and have to play stuff down the middle, not too left field.” Ibe Sesay’s love of music started young. “From around the age of 14 I grew up listening to the music my dad liked so it would have been soul, Motown. I listened to radio, too, including Steve Wright who passed away recently. It stood me in good stead, I would say, I have excellent musical knowledge.” Although never in a band, Sesay loves the sax, was bought one by Colleen and says the intro to The Careless Whisper is in his repertoire. Pre-radio, Ibe Sesay wanted to be a motor mechanic. He trained after attending St Patrick’s in Lisburn, then moved into promotion, working for Coca Cola at one point. “I was good at it, had the gift of the gab. But we used to go to the pub on a Friday and one day I wrote my letter of resignation. I didn’t like the way the targets were going up all the time.” He moved into Auto Trader, but after a while people could photograph their own cars and do the selling without specialist help. All the while, Sesay had dreamt of broadcasting and a DJ friend, Trevor, encouraged him. Sadly, Trevor passed away but on the day of his funeral, Ibe sent off his demo tape. John Paul (JP) Ballantine of Downtown Radio responded and he got his break. We talk about the power of music, what it can do. “Music makes people feel good, be it disco, Motown or classical, it releases the endorphins. On

a radio station we do two things, introduce people to new music which is a privilege. And take people back to a certain period in their life, tune in to that nostalgia.” In terms of favourite sounds, he and wife Colleen have a few ‘our songs’. “Islands in the Stream, Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton, Together we are Beautiful, Lauren Wood’s Fallen from Pretty Woman. It has not all been plain sailing. One impediment is a slight stammer that surfaces when Sesay is stressed. His easy going manner can partly be attributed to the need to slow down his speech patterns. He has also experienced racial prejudice, something in the news since Labour MP Diane Abbott was attacked in an incident that caused a furore at Westminster. “Yes, I have. As have my children. Stephen, the darkest in skin colour of my children, has been called names at school. I tell him ‘It’s their problem.’ It knocked my wife off, as it was her first experience of prejudice. But we definitely need to do more. I have spoken about this on Nolan a few times.” Sesay contributes by giving talks on tackling racism in the workplace. The Groovy Train is up and running this month for a reunion tour. Michael Jackson fan JJ Jackson will be pulling on his Afro wig in preparation. Sesay spent fourteen years with the legendary club evening that attracted students, disco fans and anybody out for a good time to the M Club in Shaftesbury Square. “I was there from 2001 and it was just a fun show. People came from all over Northern Ireland. There were dancers, dance competitions, hen parties. We did a reunion at the Europa a couple of years ago which was successful and now we’re

36

embarking on a reunion tour.” Seventies and Eighties disco music will be belting out again with its relaxed vibe. “Abba, Barry White, Billy Ocean, Redlight spells Danger, Gloria Gaynor I will Survive, the Bee Gees, Grease.” He and wife actually met at one of the sessions – “She used to come every Friday night. I mistook her for a hen as she was wearing this tiara, but it was her birthday. She quickly corrected me.” They now have four children - Ellie, studying law at Queen’s, Mollie, in her final school year, Stephen, year 10 and Daniel year 9. Ibe Sesay, who is gym-fit, has appeared on television in Ninja Warrior (“The least said about that, the better.”) and says while he wouldn’t rule it out, he has no plans to become a Ben Shephard. Although his enthusiasm for cooking – “during lockdown, I started and make spicy dishes.” - might help. So maybe a food and music show of some kind could work. Another new project is travelling back to Sierra Leone, a country which suffered civil war, (where he lived for a few years from the age of two), for Concern International charity. “My mother met my father when he did his chemistry PHD at Queen’s. They moved out there, she brought us back but it will be great to see where I lived again.” The Groovy Train reunion tour is at The Empire, Belfast (April 26), Canal Court, Newry (May 3), Everglades, Derry (May 10), and Killyhevlin, Enniskillen (June 28), go to thegroovytrain.co.uk for tickets

Meet Your Surgeon - Dr Kevin McDonald of Tir na nOg Clinic Welcome to Tir na nOg Clinic, a family-run establishment specialising in hair transplant surgery. At the forefront of the clinic is Dr. Kevin McDonald, a highly skilled and dedicated surgeon with an unwavering commitment to his craft. Hailing from Baldoyle in Dublin, Dr. Kevin pursued his medical education at the University of Galway (then UCG), where he completed his studies in 1999. His expertise lies in cardiothoracic surgery, the field he delved into after graduating.

Restore your hair and confidence like you never lost it

During his time in Galway, fate intervened, bringing Dr. Kevin together with his now-wife, Natasha, who was pursuing engineering studies at the same university. After obtaining his medical degree, Kevin initially embarked on his professional journey in the UK, where he and Natasha spent five transformative years. It was during this period that they tied the knot and started their family. In 2005, an opportunity arose in Dr. Kevin’s specialisation, beckoning him back to his beloved Ireland. Eager to return home, the family embraced this chance, leading Dr. Kevin to practice surgery at a number of prestigious hospitals, including the Mater Private and Blackrock Clinic, over the following decade.

Surgical and non-surgical hair loss treatments provided by an experienced surgeon with the focus of achieving a natural look. We are a surgical hair loss clinic in Ireland, owned and run by an Irish surgeon.

However, the year 2014 proved to be a pivotal moment in Dr. Kevin’s career trajectory as an increasing fascination with hair transplant surgery took hold. Determined to explore this innovative field further, Dr. Kevin committed himself to extensive training, thus embarking on a transformative journey to become a hair transplant surgeon. In 2015, driven by a resolute vision, Dr. Kevin made the bold decision to leave his position at Blackrock Clinic. With the support of his wife Natasha, he redirected his skills and expertise towards establishing Tir na nOg Clinic. Since its inception, Tir na nOg Clinic has flourished, catering to the needs of its clientele and relocating to its bespoke premises in 2016.

Cost of transplant pictured is €3,500 €3,500

Dr. Kevin is not only a fountain of knowledge in his field but also a passionate advocate for his patients. Frequently asked why he chose to transition from major surgery to hair transplant surgery and running his own business, Dr. Kevin explains that his decision was multifaceted. From a logical standpoint, he recognised the declining demand for cardiac surgery due to the advent of cardiac stents, while hair transplant surgery has experienced a consistent surge in popularity. Additionally, the long hours and commute associated with his previous speciality were crucial factors that Dr. Kevin considered, given his dedication to his young family of five.

Cost of transplant pictured is €2,500

However, the heart-led aspect of his decision proved equally compelling. Dr. Kevin was motivated by empathy and a desire to alleviate the struggles of individuals battling hair loss. Often affecting relatively young individuals with their lives stretching ahead, the emotional toll of hair loss on their confidence and self-esteem struck a chord with Dr. Kevin. In his eyes, the value of helping these individuals is just as significant as providing care for those with heart conditions. Moreover, he enjoys the personal connections he establishes with his hair transplant patients, during consultations and where the patient is awake during treatment — an invaluable experience not possible with cardiac patients. At Tir na nOg Clinic, you will find not only a skilled surgeon but also a compassionate professional dedicated to helping you achieve your desired results. Dr. Kevin’s commitment to his patients, his extensive knowledge, and his genuine care make him the ideal surgeon to guide you on your journey toward renewed confidence and a brighter future. H E A LT H M AT T E R S

EDITED BY KERRY ASTON

Kerry is founder and director of The Movement Medic

Looking at the Bigger Picture It’s hard to ignore the uptick in private health clinics and services on our high streets lately, but it’s not just about chasing luxury. It’s a direct response to the shortcomings of a system that tends to patch up problems without looking at the bigger picture.

Our public healthcare system is so time-poor that it tends to treat injuries as stand-alone issues, without considering how they fit into our overall health picture. This doesn’t provide long-term solutions and people often find themselves back where they started, if they got anywhere at all. So what are the struggles of navigating our fractured healthcare system, and how can you ensure you achieve optimal health and well-being? It’s not just about skipping the queues… People are craving a whole new approach to their health. They’re tired of being treated like a checklist of symptoms and are seeking care that understands their mind, body and soul connection. Picture this: you’re dealing with symptoms that just don’t fit into any neat medical box. Your blood tests come back normal, but you still feel lousy. Sound familiar? You’re not alone. Many folks are stuck in this frustrating limbo, feeling like something’s off but getting no answers, and when doctors can’t put a name to it, it’s like hitting a dead end. That’s why more and more people are turning to private healthcare for the personalised attention they deserve. Grey areas in healthcare don’t have to mean a bleak future… Life isn’t always black and white when it comes to our well-being; there’s a vast spectrum between feeling great and feeling unwell. Instead of sudden shifts from one extreme to the other, our health journey often unfolds gradually, influenced by various factors over time. In my practice, I meet many individuals who find themselves in this grey area of health. They’re not quite sick, but they’re far from feeling their best. Despite experiencing symptoms like fatigue, mood swings and

chronic pain, they don’t neatly fit into the standard categories of illness. Their blood tests may come back inconclusive, leaving them without a clear diagnosis or treatment plan. This uncertainty often leads to frustration and a lack of support for these individuals. As a doctor, I’ve noticed a troubling trend: when symptoms can’t be easily explained, patients are often brushed aside or told there’s nothing wrong. But just because we can’t put a label on it doesn’t mean it’s not real. Functional medicine offers a fresh approach. It acknowledges the complexity of human health and seeks to uncover the underlying causes of illness and dysfunction. As someone deeply immersed in this field, specialising in functional medicine, rheumatology and sports performance, I’ve seen first hand the transformative power of addressing these root issues. From Symptoms to Solutions… In the realm of functional medicine, we don’t just patch up symptoms, we unravel the underlying mysteries of your health to pave the way for lasting wellness. As a doctor deeply committed to this approach, I’m here to guide you through your health journey and help you reclaim vitality. Sound too good to be true? Stay with me… Let’s start by addressing the diverse range of issues I tackle every day. Whether it’s hormonal imbalances, digestive woes, chronic fatigue, or inflammatory conditions, I’ve seen it all. From autoimmune disorders to arthritis, low energy to mood swings. Everyone is different, so everyone needs to be treated differently. But how do we get to the root of your health concerns? Assess, don’t guess. Without data we can’t see what’s going on, a full body “MOT” if

you like to see what’s happening. We need a thorough exploration of the underlying factors contributing to your symptoms. We’ll delve into everything from toxin exposure to nutritional deficiencies, use cutting-edge testing methods that provide invaluable insights into your body’s inner workings. Tests like the DUTCH Test, which assesses hormonal balance, or the GI Effects Testing, which identifies gastrointestinal health issues, or the Metabolomix Genova Test (it’s a biggie!) gives a comprehensive analysis that delves into your body’s metabolic pathways and nutrient levels. These detailed assessments not only help us understand your body’s unique needs but also guide us in tailoring personalised interventions to tackle your issues. But it’s not just test results and off you go, armed with this knowledge, we create a nutrition, sleep, supplement and movement plan to address immune dysfunction, optimise detoxification pathways and rebalance hormonal levels. By addressing deficiencies, improving sleep quality, and implementing stress management strategies, only then will you see change. In a world where healthcare can feel impersonal and disjointed, functional medicine offers a promising alternative. By focusing on solutions rather than just symptoms, we empower individuals to take charge of their health and live life to the fullest. It’s time to take control of your health and embrace a new approach to care. We can’t change the system but we can change our own health approach within it. Rebecca is founder and Director of Physiotherapy at Apex Clinic and Apex Headache Clinic.

Apex Headache Clinic have been successfully treating Headaches, Migraines, Vertigo and Tinnitus for over 25 years This month, Apex Headache Clinic founder and Spinal & Headache Physiotherapy Specialist, Rebecca Nelson, discusses headaches, migraines, vertigo and tinnitus and how Apex Headache Clinic, the first drug-free headache and migraine clinic in Ireland, has been successfully treating and clearing these debilitating conditions. many cases the person has no neck pain at all, only headaches or migraines. At Apex Headache Clinic we understand your pain. We know from years of treating headaches and migraines, that our specialist manual physiotherapy regime called The Nelson Headache Approach™, which is offered at no other clinic in Ireland, is very likely to be the long-term cure that you’re looking for. We take a firm stance that the cure for pain isn’t painkillers and getting to the source of the problem is much more effective.

Are headaches or migraines destroying your life? At Apex Headache Clinic, we witness daily how persistent headaches and migraines can ruin the quality of people’s lives, leaving them desperate to find a solution that brings relief to their pain. Many people don’t realise that headaches or migraines can be triggered from damage or stiffness in the joints of the upper neck region of the spine. Poor posture or hours spent slumped over desks can cause recurrent neck-triggered headaches and migraines, as can repeated heavy lifting or a previous fall or injury. In

Is vertigo or dizziness getting you down? At Apex Headache Clinic, we have extensive experience in treating vertigo or dizziness. Dizziness originating from the upper neck region of the spine is called cervical vertigo and is commonly overlooked as a source of vertigo. It originates from stiffness or damage of the upper two neck joints of the spine. Usually, the person has no actual neck pain, only dizziness. At Apex Headache Clinic, we have been successfully diagnosing and treating cervical vertigo for over 20 years. During your initial consultation, one of our specialist physiotherapists will assess your neck to establish if it is involved in causing your vertigo and to differentiate it from vertigo from the inner ear. A treatment plan can then be started to clear it. One of the features of cervical vertigo is that it doesn’t respond to drugs or any treatment given for inner ear

vertigo. With our specialist treatment regime of physiotherapy called The Nelson Vertigo Approach™, patients usually begin to experience relief within just a few sessions. Is tinnitus causing you frustration? Tinnitus can be heard as a ringing, hissing, whistling, buzzing or clicking sound that can be intermittent, or constant. It’s an intrusive, annoying and, in some cases, devastating condition for sufferers. Although commonly associated with damage to the hearing system, tinnitus can also be caused by injury or stiffness of the upper neck joints and this is often overlooked as usually there is no neck pain. The good news regarding tinnitus which is triggered from the neck is that, in most cases, it can be treated and cleared at Apex Headache Clinic. Treat and beat pain at its source As with all niggles, aches and pains, we recommend that you get to the root cause of your symptoms as soon as possible. Once diagnosed, Apex Headache Clinic’s specialist manual physiotherapy treatment regimes can clear all of these conditions, restoring your quality of life, allowing you to get on with enjoying life again free from your symptoms. If you would like to book an appointment at Apex Headache Clinic, contact us on: 028 9048 4153. No GP referral is necessary.

I am finally headache-free after 10 years, thanks to Apex Headache Clinic Dolores, from Belfast, who is in her 60s, suffered from horrendous occipital (back of the head) headaches for 10 years. During these terrible years she tried everything in the hope of getting even a little relief, but nothing helped. After hearing about Apex Headache Clinic, with nothing to lose, Dolores decided to try it out. Here, she shares how the clinic’s unique regime of specialist manual physiotherapy treatment for headaches, called The Nelson Headache ApproachTM, cleared her headaches, meaning she could finally get her life back on track. Dolores, when did your headaches begin? I had suffered with migraines since I was in my twenties. Then around 10 years ago, I started suffering with severe pain in the back of my head, at the base of my skull. I attended my GP many times and was prescribed various different medications. I was then referred to see a consultant neurologist for a brain MRI scan and they diagnosed my head pain as occipital headaches. One year ago the pain in the back of my head became worse and it was constant. How did the head pain affect your life? When I had the occipital headaches, my life had to be put on hold, I couldn’t do anything. When the pain was at its worst, I even ended up at A&E, it was horrendous and very scary, not knowing what was causing my pain and what was happening to me. What led you to Apex Headache Clinic? A consultant at A&E and my GP both had suggested that I try Apex Headache Clinic to see if they could help with my pain. I didn’t want to take a lot of strong medications that were being prescribed and I was keen to see if there could be a drug-free solution to my headaches rather than popping pills all the time. How has your life changed since having treatment? When I first started physiotherapy treatment

with my specialist physiotherapist, I was very skeptical because the treatment was so gentle and not a firm massage like I had thought it would be. It took a few sessions before I noticed any difference. My improvement was gradual and over the course of treatment I slowly noticed my headaches improving. I now attend Apex Headache Clinic for maintenance treatment once every six weeks and I am no longer having occipital headaches. This has been amazing for me!

What advice would you offer someone suffering from headaches? I would advise them to go to Apex Headache Clinic. I have recommended Apex to others as the help they have given me has been second to none and I am able to enjoy my life now, free from the constant headaches. Unlocking Potential - Dyslexia Solutions at McCrystal Opticians Recognising the symptoms of dyslexia.

Noel McCrystal, one of Northern Ireland’s most popular opticians with 25 years’ experience, is an expert in children’s eyecare. As the primary optician at McCrystal Opticians in Scotch Street Centre, Dungannon, Noel and his team are known for delivering first-class eyecare for all of the family. McCrystal Opticians is one of the few opticians in Northern Ireland to offer Schoolvision, a dyslexia solution that has proved to be an effective treatment for dyslexia in approximately 85% of patients. Many customers seeking solutions are children as it is during school age that the symptoms of dyslexia start to become more visible. In some cases, the symptoms of dyslexia may have gone undetected

during the early years of childhood, however, as children begin to learn to read and write, parents and teachers may pick up on some areas of concern. Outlining some of the general symptoms of dyslexia, Noel McCrystal explains: “Some of the more common symptoms of dyslexia include your child mentioning the ‘movement’ or ‘shimmering’ of text, becoming mixed up with letters and words, frequently losing their position on the page, experiencing headaches or visual discomfort, and tiring easily whilst reading. “Dyslexia can affect children in many ways and can even impact co-ordination. Our Schoolvision programme can really assist with outcomes including increased

reading speed and accuracy; clearer writing; increased self-esteem; and decreased tiredness and anxiety.” Schoolvision is not a ‘one size fits all’ treatment but rather a journey that requires patience and time to see the results. It’s a relatively simple programme with the main requirement being that the child or adult wears their prescription glasses for everything ‘up close’ throughout the programme. Noel McCrystal concludes: “We are so proud of the many children across Northern Ireland and further afield who have completed the programme, transforming their learning and school days. A recent 10-year-old patient said, “the words don’t dance on the page anymore,” and this is exactly why we do what we do. We’re here to help.”

TOP FIVE SIGNS OF DYSLEXIA 1. They may read or write very slowly, see blurring of the words, or complain about words moving or shimmering on the page. 2. They may confuse the order of letters or words, or may put letters the wrong way round, such as “b” and “d”. 3. They might frequently lose their position on the page when reading. 4. Their co-ordination could be poor, especially apparent when playing sports. 5. They may find it difficult to carry out a sequence of instructions or struggle with planning or organization.

McCrystal Opticians is located at Scotch Street Centre, Dungannon. Noel can be contacted on +44 (0) 2887 722379 or via email at icare@mccrystalopticians.com http://www.mccrystalopticians.com. See https://www.mccrystalopticians.com/schoolvision/ for more information.

The artist’s second exhibition took place at the Titanic Hotel Belfast and showcased a wide selection of his Belfast cityscapes, Mournes and North Coast landscapes. Both exhibitions were a tremendous success and were exceptionally well attended, with swift sales of Margey’s originals and limited edition prints. “it’s impossible to read without pondering your own life and the difference that can happen over four year increments.” EDITED BY KELLIE BURCH KELLIE@ULSTERTATLER.COM

Once Upon a Leap Year Launch There was literally no better time for the ’s new book than Belfast launch of Anna Bell’s on the 29th February - a leap day. The book, titled, Once Upon a Leap Year, focuses on two ‘leaplings’, Lucy and Noah. Meeting on their once-in-four-years birthday, it seems fate that their paths cross during an otherwise disastrous trip to Calais. There’s an undeniable spark, but they are both with other people and so a platonic friendship blooms. The book, which picks up every four years as they celebrate their leap day birthdays, charters the course of 20 years. As time passes, we see Lucy and Noah’s lives and relationship with one another change through all of life’s big moments weddings, babies, new jobs, family illness. But despite the passing years, Lucy can’t shake the feeling that they were destined to meet. Launched in Belfast’s No Alibis book shop, guests such as Rachel Brown of the Seamus Heaney Centre, writer Jacqueline Shea Murphy and poet Stephen Connolly gathered together for what was Anna Bell’s first official book launch. Despite writing an impressive collection of successful novels, Anna revealed on the night she had always been too scared to have a book launch in case no one turned up. She needn’t have worried, as No Alibis was bursting with people excited to hear more about Anna, and Once Upon a Leap Year. As well as discussing her recent move to Belfast and her early career aspirations to be a candidate on The Apprentice, Anna spoke of the inspiration for the book. The romcom, which is superbly written, had me instantly hooked. The characters are fully formed and fascinating. The concept of the book is engaging and it’s impossible to read without pondering your own life and the difference that can happen over four year increments. On introducing the book at the launch, Glenn Patterson, novelist, screenwriter and director of the Seamus Heaney Centre, relayed how, when reading it on the Glider, he was so engrossed he missed his stop, and in a panic exited the bus minus his phone. So, you’ve been warned, this is one truly addictive read. Once Upon a Leap Year was launched on 29 February 2024.

However, it was in the Ulster University’s Birley Building where crowds really got a taste of circus life. From a Circus Skills Workshop to a magic show, there was something for all ages. For us, however, the Greatest Showman (or make that showwomen) were Doris and Mabel who treated the gathered crowd to a spectacular aerial circus as part of their very unconventional book club. It was thrilling, hilarious and had young and old totally mesmerised. The Belfast Children’s Festival is the biggest family festival in Ireland with a focus on diversity, creativity and family. Speaking

of the 2024 offering, Roisin McDonough, Chief Executive, Arts Council of Northern Ireland, said: “For many children, the Belfast Children’s Festival will be their first experience of live, professional arts. There is no better place to start.” This year there were over 100 events and performances taking place in venues across the city, from Culturlann MacAdam O Fiaich to the Crescent Arts Centre, and productions from the Netherlands, Scotland, England and Ireland, featuring local artists, and several UK and Ireland premiers. With such an exciting and varied selection on our doorstep, it is no wonder that each year it is a highlight in Northern Ireland’s cultural calendar. The Festival Family Day Out took place on 16th March 2024.

PRESERVING CELEBRATING HISTORY In the realm of sports memorabilia, every autograph tells a tale – a piece of history etched in ink. For Carl Spiller and Saad Wadia, the founders of Fiber Sports Memorabilia, this journey began in childhood, with panini stickers and hand-drawn Adidas Predator boots as their youthful treasures. A Shared Passion: Childhood collectors turned entrepreneurs, Carl and Saad’s paths intertwined through a mutual love for sports and its iconic artifacts. Saad’s trajectory led him to establish a sports management company, now representing Memorabilia. Choosing Northern Ireland as their base, the duo aimed to bring their shared passion to the heart of Belfast.

the legendary Ian Rush. Meanwhile, Carl, a seven-year England national team fighter, leveraged his contacts to make a mark in the sports memorabilia world. From Passion to Business: As their personal collections burgeoned, the need for a dedicated space became apparent. Carl fondly recalls how his house turned into a museum of boxes, prompting the birth of Fiber Sports

Authenticity as a Hallmark: Navigating the sea of sports memorabilia, Carl and Saad identified a prevalent issue – inauthentic signatures saturating the market. Fiber Sports Memorabilia emerged as a beacon of authenticity, ensuring only the finest and genuine signatures on authentic items grace their shelves. Customers can trust that each piece is a genuine slice of sporting history. Growing Legacy in Northern Ireland: Word quickly spread about the largest sports memorabilia shop in Northern Ireland, initially specialising in Liverpool and boxing memorabilia. The shop, featured in various news outlets, became a haven for sports enthusiasts. As Fiber Sports Memorabilia prepares for significant expansion in the next six months, the collection promises to transcend boundaries. Mission Statement: “Preserving legends, celebrating history” – this succinct statement encapsulates the ethos of Fiber Sports Memorabilia. Beyond being a business, it is a dedication to the stories embedded in each autograph and the rich tapestry of sporting excellence spanning decades. Future Horizons: As Fiber Sports Memorabilia continues 81

to grow, Carl and Saad invite enthusiasts to join the journey by signing up for their newsletter at: www.fibersportsmemorabilia.com. They have signings approaching with Bryan Robson, Chris Eubank, Cafu and Luka Modric, for a meet and greet event. Email or check out the website for more details. In Belfast, Fiber Sports Memorabilia stands not just as a shop but as a testament to the enduring legacy of sports – a legacy that Carl Spiller, Saad Wadia, and their team are committed to preserving for generations to come. 128 Orby Drive, Belfast BT5 6BB 07930 747 472

REVIEW

Glorious Getaway Ulster Tatler’s Joanne Harkness visits Lawlor’s of Naas, a 4-star hotel in County Kildare. It is always a treat to have a weekend getaway and going over the border feels far enough away without having to board a plane and go through the dreaded airport delays. My husband and I recently took a road trip down to County Kildare, to stay in the renowned Lawlor’s of Naas for some luxury relaxation. This four-star hotel sits in the heart of the town, where it has stood proudly for over 100 years. Weather warnings and sudden snowfall had hit Ireland in the lead up to our stay, but with a stroke of luck, on the day we arrived in Naas it was glorious – spring was finally making an appearance. Our first port of call after our three-hour drive was the opulent lobby area, where we were seated by the roaring fire to enjoy a fabulous afternoon tea. Not meaning to boast, but we recently had afternoon tea in The Plaza in New York, so expectations were high... how would Lawlor’s compare? I’m pleased to report that it held its own – there were certainly similarities in the décor and the food choices. Highlights for me were the Coronation chicken and spinach wrap, the savoury scone with herb cream cheese and Parma ham, the chocolate mousse and the delectable lemon cake, all of which were washed down with a refreshing peppermint tea… and a glass of Prosecco! Before we checked into our room we took a stroll through Naas to get a feel for the town. It has an array of boutiques, cafés, restaurants and high street shops – I particularly enjoyed browsing through books in Barker & Jones where I bought The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by

Taylor Jenkins Reid, which was a must-read recommendation from our Ulster Tatler digital columnist, Victoria Quinn. After our jaunt around town, we headed up to our room to relax before dinner. The room was lovely – it was traditional with a modern twist. The pièce de résistance was the hidden flat screen TV which came up from the bottom of the bed at the touch of a button – very impressive! In the evening we headed down to Vi’s restaurant, which is the focal point of the lobby. A spectacular, circular bar sits in the centre of the restaurant and the surrounding tables were filled with families and couples enjoying a Saturday evening together. The contemporary-style menu showcases high-quality ingredients, creating dishes that were truly delicious. I started with the roasted pumpkin, bacon and Burrata salad, which was served with pomegranate, tossed seeds and torn focaccia. It was light and refreshing and combined a mixture of flavours and textures that worked perfectly together. My choice of main course was the crispy skin salmon, which came served with sautéed bacon, pearl onion dressing, rissole potatoes and broccoli. I loved the saltiness of the bacon against the fresh salmon and the crunch of the zesty pearl onions. My husband went for the strip loin steak and scrapped his plate clean, which was a good sign. Finally, to finish we shared the chocolate fondue, which came with an array of treats for dipping into the warm chocolate sauce. The high standard of food continued with breakfast the following morning, which

106

offered both continental and hot buffets; the best kind of hotel breakfast in my opinion. We both enjoyed a traditional Irish cooked breakfast, which set us up for the day ahead. After what was a thoroughly enjoyable stay in Lawlor’s of Naas, we checked out at 11am, but our trip wasn’t over just yet! The hotel is located just a 15-minute drive from Kildare Village, so of course we had to make a stop at the ultimate shopping destination before heading home. Hobbies don’t come much better than golf; socially it is a fantastic way to meet new people or spend time with friends. Another benefit of golf is that it is an excellent form of exercise, as you clock up your steps and build up core strength from those mighty swings. Joining a golf society is a fantastic way to introduce more golf into your life. Golf societies will enter into competitions, both locally and across seas, which is a great way to play on array of different courses. With the competitive aspect, it will push you to improve your game (and get rewarded for it too, if you practise hard enough). One of the best reasons is the company – you will get to play with like-minded people and make friendships along the way. To find out where to join a golf society, why not contact your local golf clubs, who can point you in the right direction.

The 2022 Journalists’ Inter Provincial winning Ulster team included well known local faces on the news and sports front. L to R: John Dickson, Andy Bligh, Gerry Feeney, John Haughey, James O’Leary, Gerry Cunningham, Tom Coulter, Ciaran McCaffery, Martin Jordan and Deric Henderson.

Ulster Press Golf Society The Belfast Sports Writers’ Golf Society was founded in 1968 and within a few years, with the inclusion of news journalists and sports photographers, became the Belfast Press Golf Society. Many wellknown media faces and voices have been members down the years. A more recent rebranding saw the Ulster Press Golf Society evolution, which has reflected the more modern digital age and current members work across the whole media spectrum: TV and radio broadcasting, newspapers, magazines and web-based blogs and publications. The current president is Darren Clarke OBE, 2011 Open Champion. His predecessors included Ryder Cup player Norman Drew and the legendary 1947 Open Champion and four-time Ryder Cup player Fred Daly MBE, who was president for many years until his passing in 1990 at the age of 79. The UPGS continues to grow and carries on the legacy of the founding fathers, who espoused camaraderie and good humour as an equal to sporting prowess.

The greens were slow and required out-of-thecomfort-zone putting; that made the difference between winners and losers at the event. The first ball of the new season was struck by incoming Captain Alan Clements, and it managed to hold the fairway! The first winner of the new season was Steven Moore with 35 points, a fine score in very testing conditions.

Battling the elements at the UPGS event were Steven Moore, Tom Coulter and Stephen Montgomery.

Winner of Nearest the Pin at the 11th hole was Roddy O’Flaherty.

Martin Jordan was the winner of the Low Section prize at the first event of the UPGS season. 112

A MESSAGE FROM EDUCATION MINISTER PAUL GIRVAN The prospect of “Big School” is exciting, but it can also be daunting. It’s important that parents and their children are happy with their choice of primary school. Northern Ireland can rightly pride itself on its excellent options with Integrated, Irish Medium, Maintained and Controlled schools offering fantastic opportunities. Education is not just about results. It is about releasing the potential of every child. Schools here pride themselves on the holistic approach taken to the children in their care, allowing each to achieve their full potential, regardless of postcode, background, religion or ethnicity. My advice, both as Education Minister and as a parent, is to decide on a school that fully meets the individual needs of your child. Travel times, pastoral care, extra-curricular provision, help for children who need extra help, all have a bearing on that choice. On 25th April, children will find out which primary school they will be starting at in September. This will be an exciting, and perhaps nervous, time for children as they move on to primary school. This change brings with it many opportunities to meet new friends, study new subjects and experience new activities. I firmly believe that education is the cornerstone of our society and, as Education Minister, I will continue to push for the delivery of the best system for all our children and young people. Looking forward, I am confident that Northern Ireland’s children have access to an education that allows them to thrive, not just academically but emotionally. I am confident our schools provide those opportunities in abundance, allowing each child the opportunity to follow their dreams, strive for excellence and realize their full potential in a nurturing environment. My Department’s vision for all children is that they are learning and succeeding where they are happiest in the best environment for their individual needs. I hope this guide helps make that process a reality for parents and children alike. Paul Givan Education Minister
