After what seems like (and was) a long dark winter, it’s great to see that spring is finally making an appearance. As well as the improving weather, this time of year also heralds the start of what we refer to in the office as ‘the awards season’. Voting is already up and running in the Ulster Tatler Influential Women of the Year Awards 2024. These awards are now in their 3rd year and are there to recognise women, from all backgrounds, who have contributed in some way, large or small, to improving the lives of those around them. The awards will take place on the afternoon of Saturday 8th June in the dining room at the Ulster Reform Club on Royal Avenue in Belfast. Tickets are on sale now and can be bought by contacting the Ulster Tatler offices. To find out more, and to vote, go to ulstertatler.com or turn to page 74-75. Although voting is not starting for another month, the build-up for the 17th Ulster Tatler Awards has also begun. It feels like a long way off but Thursday 3rd October is the date for this year’s awards. Turn to page 139 for more information. I’m also delighted to announce that two titles published by Ulster Tatler Group have been shortlisted in the ‘magazine of the year’ category at the 2024 NI Chartered Institute of Public Relations Awards. The magazines shortlisted are Ambition – which we publish for the NI Chamber of Commerce – and Perspective, which is a Royal Society of Ulster Architects title. Kathy Clugston is a freelance radio presenter. She chairs the long-running BBC Radio 4 programme ‘Gardeners’ Question Time’ and presents the weekly entertainment show ‘The Ticket’ on BBC Radio Ulster.

The Art of Conversation This month, Kathy discusses the art of holding a conversation and how we need to talk less, listen more. I have a couple of female friends in their fifties and sixties who are braving the world of online dating. I say ‘braving’ because it seems that for a woman in her prime seeking interesting, engaging men of a similar age, the pickings are not rich. Perhaps my friends fall outside the somewhat hopeful age parameters set by many older gents. Whereas in real life how someone looks is just one piece of the puzzle, online there isn’t much else to go on so the profile picture is disproportionately important. Of the men my friends have been matched with, the majority seem to think “hardened criminal” is the look to melt a menopausal maiden’s heart – they advertise themselves with grimacing selfies taken inches from the face, which is flattering to no one, not least those of us boasting a profusion of chins and/or nasal hair. There are pictures taken in the bathroom mirror, a hangdog expression above a vest or, worse, no top at all. (TIP: If you are a man of a certain age about to upload yourself on to a dating platform, try wearing clothes and smiling.) Anyway, my friend Anne had a pleasant enough initial online encounter with a man in a top to agree to meet him in person, in a bar. She was nervous as it had been a long time since she’d been on a date. Would they have enough to talk about? She needn’t have worried. Within five minutes the man had launched into his entire relationship history, barely pausing for a swig of Pinot Grigio. Anne wondered how long it would be until he asked her something about herself. Her glass was drained and refilled. She looked at her watch as he proceeded to delight her with a poem he was working on. And did she know he was a songwriter too?

To his credit he stopped short of producing a guitar and crooning his self-penned ballads at her like the Kens on the beach in Greta Gerwig’s film Barbie. Anne looked at her watch again. Almost two hours and not one single question. She thanked him for a nice evening and deleted his number. As she was recounting the story it made me think about how rare it is to have a really satisfying conversation with someone we don’t know well. There are a lot of people for whom chat is one-way traffic. All transmit and no receive. I must confess I have been guilty of interrupting someone’s story to recount my own - bigger! better! - experience. A lot of us do this, not consciously or as some kind of power play, it’s just easy to get over-excited about our own contribution to the discussion. And this is not merely an affliction of our modern, self-obsessed world. The 18th century essayist and philosopher William Hazlitt wrote, “the art of conversation is the art of hearing as well as of being heard.” In 1950 the novelist Ernest Hemingway noted, “when people talk, listen completely. Don’t be thinking what you’re going to say. Most people never listen.” And it’s true, a lot of people are only half-attentive, busy preparing what they are going to say next. There’s another type

of talker (who has no doubt done courses at work about how to be an effective communicator) who bombards you with questions as if it were an interview but barely pauses to listen to your replies. Trying to recall a ‘good’ conversation I’d had lately, I remembered bumping into an acquaintance in my local park. I’ve no idea what we actually talked about but my impression is that he held eye contact while we spoke, smiled and nodded and appeared to be really listening to - and picking up on - what I was saying. As simple as that. I walked on feeling buoyant rather than drained. So my new mantra is: speak less, listen more. The poet Maya Angelou worked it out. She said, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

Established in 1964, Leander Amateur Swimming Club recently celebrated its 60th Anniversary at an event in The Four Winds. It was a special evening attended by swimmers from all six decades! NORMAN WILSON MBE

Tina McKenzie, CEO of Stafﬂine Recruitment Ireland and a distinguished ﬁgure in the local business community, has been awarded the prestigious Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her outstanding contributions to the Northern Irish economy. The investiture ceremony took place at Buckingham Palace on 31st January 2024, where Mrs McKenzie received the honour from HRH The Princess Royal.

Norman Wilson, managing director of Cookstown Furniture Centre, was recognised in His Majesty King Charles III’s ﬁrst New Year Honours List. He was awarded an MBE at Windsor Castle in September 2023 for services to business and to the community in Northern Ireland. His family and friends are all delighted to see that he has received recognition for a lifetime of hard work.

DR NIZAM DAMANI MBE Dr Nizam Damani was awarded an MBE for services to infection prevention and control in Northern Ireland and to the World Health Organisation. Here he is pictured at his investiture on 27th November, with his wife Laila and sons Numair and Namiz. He received his award from the Prince of Wales at Buckingham Palace. The East Antrim Hounds celebrated their annual Hunt Ball at the Dunadry Hotel, Templepatrick on Saturday 3rd February. A great night was enjoyed by all, with dancing to The Bizz and a few surprises including a singing waiter! This year, the hunt ball was in aid of two charities, N. I. Children’s Hospice and Riding For The Disabled, Ballyclare Group. An auction on the night along with donations raised over £5,775 for the charities. BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS AT THE CHELSEA Reginald Clark celebrated his 70th birthday at the Chelsea Bar on the Lisburn Road in Belfast, surrounded by local friends and family from Northern Ireland. Among the guests were alumni from his alma mater, Booker T. Washington High School, who travelled from the United States, as well as his esteemed business partner of over 30 years, with whom he collaborated across various continents including the Middle East, Australia, Europe, and South Africa. Renowned saxophonist Kirk Whalum, (www.kirkwhalum.com) a cherished friend of over four decades, contributed a heartfelt video tribute to commemorate the occasion. The event was also graced by the presence of Oscar winner James Martin and his father Ivan Martin, renowned broadcaster and journalist, adding to the celebratory atmosphere. Having embarked on his international career in 1981, primarily in Saudi Arabia, Reginald relocated to Belfast in 1999, a year prior to the signing of the Good Friday Agreement. His involvement in Northern Ireland dates back to 1987, during which time he dedicated himself to numerous charitable endeavours, including ACSONI and Tiny Life. Notably, his support extended to Legacurry Presbyterian Church, where he supported efforts to drill water wells in Burkina Faso, providing vital access to clean water for the local community. Driven by his passion for culinary arts, inherited from his father, a former cook in the U.S. Navy, Reginald ventured into the hospitality industry, founding The Kitchen, an American café in Lisburn. An advocate for fair trade, Reginald served as a founding member of the Fairtrade Committee for Belfast, Lisburn, and Castlereagh, maintaining active involvement in both cities’ committees. His dedication to sports and community engagement is exemplified by his longstanding commitment to softball, which he played and coached for over two decades in Saudi Arabia and has continued since 2007 in Northern Ireland. Reginald’s philanthropic spirit shines through his ongoing support for charitable causes in Belfast, exemplified by his decision to designate CLUB ADAM, INC. Jane Hardy is a feature writer who has interviewed a few of the big names from Arlene Foster to Mrs Thatcher.

The World of the Short Story Prizewinning author Bernie McGill tells Jane Hardy how she’s inspired by places, how she got into books and reveals the hidden lives of her characters. You might imagine the short story to be easier to produce than fiction’s long haul genre, the novel. But you’d be wrong, according to writer Bernie McGill (57) who has just won the prestigious Edge Hill prize for her short story collection, This Train is For (No Alibis Press). It’s a question of the tightness of the shorter form. “Relatively speaking, short stories take more time. If you’re writing a three thousand word short story, it can take longer than a three thousand word chapter of a novel. With anything short, you know, there’s an intensity to it. And the hope is they contain a world.” Hers undoubtedly do, ranging from a tale of a member of the disappeared (“The Troubles are always there but I don’t put a microscope to them”) to a story about an escapologist figure who invades a student’s life and room. “I showed that one to friends who were intrigued or infuriated as to what it meant. I like my reader to do some work. They all had different readings.” I felt it was a metaphor for the way the heroine had escaped the boxed-in life of her rackety mother’s world via study. She approaches the world collected in her new book obliquely, at a slant. Bernie McGill said before meeting she finds it hard to describe herself but admits to being cheerful – “I enjoy life”. She reveals she, her husband, and two daughters had a real celebration after winning the award, going to a Bloomsbury pub for “wine, then some more wine”. The next day they attended Le Moulin Rouge show, as one of her daughters is obsessed with the film. Yet her fiction tends towards darker topics, loss and missed opportunities, even abuse. “The imagination tends towards the melancholy.”

A Fuss is one superb example of McGill’s art. It opens simply, with a woman returning north from Dublin for her father’s funeral. The process of creating this story began, as it often does with McGill, with a place. In this case, Connolly Station, recognisable and real. “The settings in my stories are familiar to me, that’s very often where I begin. Then something strange happens. If you stayed here in the Linen Hall Library café for an hour, you’d notice the carpet, the smells, what it feels like but it would filter through a fictional voice.” McGill’s work is not autobiographical. “It’s not me, but the person whose eyes it’s been seen by. So what’s happened in their life, are they meeting someone, are they going voluntarily or somewhere they don’t want to go, all kinds of questions arise.” Here, the bereaved only daughter Rosa, described later on as “a plain clothes nun”, gets into conversation with an old woman. She, by contrast, is gaudily dressed with felt earrings and the amount of detail seems strange. “She was real and she was quirky but so was her outfit which I embroidered a bit.” McGill has imagined a nephew meeting her at a station, with affection. “I felt if she was someone in your family, you’d be very fond of her.” The father has his wake, having died after being trampled by his herd of cows. The family is upset by the sensation, not wanting any fuss. Then the daughter’s headmaster appears with a literary depth charge attached in the memories of sexual abuse, disputed by her mother. She adds her character is someone who’s undergone trauma and ran – “not very far away”. The grief, when it comes, could be for her parent or herself and her diminished life, or both. “She

puts her hand to her face and ﬁnds that her cheeks are wet…This is not part of the plan.” There is also light relief in the collection. The Snaggings List is written as a playlet of texts pinging between old friends. One is house sitting for the other in Majorca and they discuss washing arrangements. There’s also talk of the bounce of new life. One is pregnant, one would like to have been. “I wrote this as a radio play but for various reasons it didn’t work. I showed it to my editor with writing in between but she said it didn’t need it. I was reminded of a family holiday in Majorca with the banter with my grown-up girls, the shorthand you have with people you’re close to.” McGill didn’t come from a writing background. “I thought it was something other people did.” The youngest of ten, she had a bricklayer father and homemaker mother in south Derry, not far from Bellaghy. “It was a busy house.” She attended St Patrick’s school in Maghera and remembers two encouraging English teachers, PJ Doherty and Aidan Taggart. Tasked with summarising a Thomas Hardy plot, McGill’s version was so good her teacher asked if she’d consulted Cole’s Notes. Then added no, because hers were better. “I knew I liked books, and writing about them.” An early attempt at a story was titled Cedric the Caterpillar and was, she adds wryly, “no doubt about his journey, being waylaid”. Bernie McGill studied Italian and English at Queen’s University, then took a job that lasted thirteen years with the Big Telly Theatre Company. She works at Queen’s now in the Computer Science

department, helping students improve their written skills via a creative writing approach. McGill produced a My Story for Radio Ulster on her daughter’s first tooth. “It was a short piece, three minutes, about getting her first real tooth and losing the other one.” Her determination to write found space when her youngest daughter, whose childminder could not manage the hours, spent an hour a day at nursery. “I dedicated that hour to writing.” Although there is a sense of missed opportunity in some of the stories, McGill found her metier. She says she may use her £10,000 prize to take a writing tour to Italy. Yet she conveys unfulfillment very well, notably in The Cure for Too Much Feeling, like a parallel Magdalen Laundry story-writ invidividual. Towards the end of another story, A Loss, about the strange death of aunt Sheila which haunts her small dog, McGill writes this in the nephew’s voice. “I marvel, not for the first time, at the secrets people keep, for themselves, and for others, at the sadnesses that betray them, and at the small quiet lives that they continue to live out until the end of their days.” This seems to echo Emerson’s line about people leading lives of “quiet desperation” but McGill, over Earl Grey tea now finished, says not totally. “Not desperation, maybe resignation.” This Train is For Published by No Alibis Press On sale now, £12.

I’ve been watching Primark for a while to see how a retailer like this will address the critical areas of environment, ethics and sustainability, and I have to say, so far, so good. Hopefully we’ll see more big high-street retailers follow this lead.

Northern Irish Models Take The Fashion World By Storm Celeste Fitzpatrick.

Every season, I wait with anticipation and excitement for New York, Paris, and London fashion weeks. This season blew my mind and ﬁlled me with such particular pride. On the runways of each fashion week, there were not one, but two models from Northern Ireland taking centre stage for some of the biggest designer names. Celeste Fitzpatrick, 21, from Belfast, stole the show at Paris and New York Fashion Week. She was ﬁrst scouted when she was 15 and has now modelled for famous designers including Prada and Dior. Making history, Omagh-born Alice McGrath opened Dior Haute Couture at the Musee Rodin in Paris. The 18-year-old is the new face of IMG Worldwide and made her debut at London Fashion Week for JW Anderson SS24. Alice has been featured in this season’s Dior Haute Couture holiday campaign and spring-summer campaign in the February edition of Fashion Bible Vogue.

How do you separate work and your personal lives as a married couple running a business together? We are so focused on growing the best brand that we can. That’s our primary goal! We put most of our time and attention into achieving this goal, so separating work and personal life is difficult when we’re driven by our passion. We have two young boys at home and they help to focus us on what’s important. They ground us and remind us to come up for air.

What inspired you to start POWERCUT®? Health and wellness is a key pillar in our lives and it was the ultimate motivating factor to create a brand that had this at its core. Really purposeful design is also something that’s very important to us and we felt that no Irish or Northern Irish brand was combining these elements and doing so at a price that everyone could attain. Can you share the story behind the brand’s name and logo? It’s all about the Bolt as it’s a representation of power and energy, the energy we put into the brand as a team and the energy we hope people get from wearing our products. The name is one for all wearers, male or female, a brand name that anyone can be proud of wearing. POWERCUT® the name is to embody the idea of power and force with the reference of the word ‘cut’ expressing how the product is made and the attention to detail in our design process. As a husband and wife team, what skills and qualities do you both have to make your business work? ‘’We complement each other well,’’ says Bronagh. ‘’Craig is a creative and builds our business relationships to help grow the brand and I like to dig in to projects to keep our plans moving.’’ ‘It’s not always easy to always be on the same page, but we are strong at communicating together and we can then face challenges head on,’’ says Craig.

The world has evolved and people want products that are versatile. Who doesn’t want to leave the office and go to a gym session while not having to change their outfit? It’s the perfect category that complements a busy lifestyle. How does POWERCUT® approach product development and innovation? We’re working 18 months ahead of each season. Firstly, we assess where we feel people’s needs will evolve to over that period. Our customers are great at giving us feedback and this helps us build that product development journey. Next, material selection is critical to delivering a fantastic product. Week after week we review fabric swatches to assess if it fits the end use of the product or collection we are building. We want to make sure that the product doesn’t just work but also feels amazing when worn. Once we get our first prototypes, we then test the products 60

on a variety of body shapes and sizes so we’re confident that the fit is perfect. It’s a constant state of testing and review and so many of our designs never make it to production, but we are always learning and that’s what’s most important. What are your plans for the year ahead, what can we expect to see from POWERCUT®? We want to engage with more of our customers in 2024, so we’ve got big plans to be part of more events. It’s where we get the most critical feedback that allows us to develop even better products. We’re also really conscious of the importance of people’s physcial and mental well-being. We aim to be more involved with our community to support that agenda in every way we can. We’ve got big plans to invest more of our time to get people active and talking, so keep an eye out for activities in the near future. What are your personal favourite products from the SS24 collections? Bronagh: Sculpt High-Waisted Leggings are my go-to. They give me everything I’ve needed in a legging. BEAUTY EMPIRE From a humble newspaper advert in 2014 to training over 17,000 students across the UK and Ireland...

Owner of the eponymous ‘Elizabeth Sands Beauty School’, Elizabeth Sands, who was last year’s Ulster Tatler Business Woman of the Year, has come a long way from the days of not being able to afford to turn on the heating in her home. Originally from England, Elizabeth moved to Portadown, with her then husband, fourteen years ago. However, less than two years after upping sticks from London, she found herself living as a single mother with two young daughters to care for. It all started with a good old fashioned newspaper advert in her local newspaper. Elizabeth contacted the Portadown Times and asked them to write an article about her and her plans for the business. Without any clients, she advertised an open day and eight people turned up; that’s how the business idea started. “Two of the people who turned up on that first open

day remain my best friends to this day,” explains Elizabeth.

“Covid was one of the biggest things that happened to me.” It was significant because she decided, before anybody had heard of Covid-19, to launch an online platform. Elizabeth and her courses have now helped train over 17,000 people from across Ireland and the UK, thanks to a little forward thinking - she saw the potential of the internet. While the business is reaching new levels, Elizabeth is still able to keep her overheads low and her time in check. Time management is a fine art she has mastered. And she does it all from the comfort of her own home, foregoing the expensive offices and the added extra costs. “We’re not doing Zoom calls, which take hours; we’ve got a really groundbreaking online platform, which we set up, so it’s self sufficient for students. Online is the way to go,” adds Elizabeth. Creating so many future business owners in the beauty field is what she loves doing. For Elizabeth, competition is healthy as it gives people like her impetus to rise above the field. Starting from the bottom and working hard at being the best at what she does is in Elizabeth’s DNA. For anyone looking to start their own business, Elizabeth suggests some self-reflection: asking the difficult questions about what they really want. More often than not, she had found people struggle to actually answer that question. She concludes: “You have to have the right mindset. If you go in thinking you’re going to fail, you’re going to fail. You have to go into it believing that you are going to be successful. I know that what I’ve got really works because it really worked for

me. You have to believe in your product and what you’re doing.” Elizabeth, who is also a trained life coach, is continuously advocating personal growth. Her guiding principle and motto is simply ‘By Building People, They Build Your Business’. She has a new business growth course about to launch, which will show students how to successfully manage their socials to increase their volume of sales. Elizabeth also reports they are one of the first academies to launch the revolutionary LED lash system which will change the landscape for eyelash extensions.

Navigating Fertility, Fitness, and Supplements for Women Easter is a time of change and we all notice a mood shift with longer nights, a welcome sight. So what better time to chat about women’s health and the other changes we see in day-to-day life? Whether kids are on the cards for you or not, as we age, hormone changes affect all of us. So how do we navigate those changing tides and, more importantly, how do we weather the storm? It’s no secret, as women age our fertility changes, but how much and what effect does it have? At birth, women have 1-2 million eggs, dwindling to about 10,000 by age 40. The quality and quantity of eggs start to decline around age 32, this accelerates by 35, resulting in a 50% reduction by age 40. This decrease, coupled with mutations in remaining eggs, increases the likelihood of failed fertilisation, miscarriage and birth defects. We’ve seen a trend in the US for years, and growing trends in London of women now freezing eggs as they want childen later in life. Menopause marks the end of reproductive years, but what you lose in menstruation you gain in hormonal shifts... goodbye periods, hello brain fog and hot flushes. But that’s not all. As women age, the decline in oestrogen affects muscle regeneration, bone density and metabolism. It’s part of life, so we just have to live with it? No, knowledge is power, and what we do with that power helps us live to our full life. Notice I say our full, because every one of us is different, so there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. We need to debunk that taking a few supplements and embarking on a new diet will work for all of us. So how does that look? Your body is like a house, you get a survey done before you invest to see what’s going on inside and regular bloodwork is key. So let’s look behind the scenes of bloodwork, training and supplements. Bloodwork I often test patients using different methods to get an insight into hormonal balance, ovulation, ovarian reserve, nutrient levels and thyroid function. Optimising essential nutrients like B12, folate, vitamin D and iron can lead to significant improvements in overall health and well-being, including better sleep, less bloating and balanced emotions. Testing blood at various times of your cycle means we can see any

imbalances or deficiencies and tailor treatment to optimise hormonal and fertility health. DUTCH Test: This comprehensive hormone assessment looks at hormonal balance, adrenal funcion and metabolite levels. GI Effects Testing: Assessing gastrointestinal health identifies digestive dysfunction, gut inflammation and microbial imbalances. Metabolomix Genova Test: A comprehensive analysis that looks at your body’s metabolic pathways, nutrient levels, and ability to detoxify. It provides insights into how your body processes and absorbs nutrients, as well as identifying any deficiencies or imbalances. In essence, the test helps to understand how your body functions on a metabolic level, including what nutrients it needs and how well it can rid itself of toxins. Training With oestrogen declining, we need to up our strength training, but it’s about striking a balance. Over-training and lack of rest can have serious complications for women’s health. Resistance training becomes crucial for maintaining muscle mass, bone strength and cardiovascular health. Plyometrics and sprint interval training are beneficial for bone health, muscle power and insulin sensitivity – vital during menopause. These exercises counteract age-related declines. Equally, overtraining can disrupt hormone levels, leading to irregular menstrual cycles or even the cessation of menstruation altogether, a condition known as amenorrhea. This disruption in the menstrual cycle can adversely affect fertility by disrupting ovulation and hormonal balance. If your exercise programme is leaving you exhausted, stressed, unable to build muscle, experiencing recurrent niggles or injuries, or if you’re noticing worsening PMS symptoms or poor sleep, it’s time to change it up.

Supplements What a minefield. While supplements serve as valuable additions to your nutritional intake, it’s essential to remember they’re just that supplements. They can’t compensate for a diet of processed foods. Folate or Methylfolate: Folate aids in DNA synthesis and fetal development during pregnancy. It’s worth noting that folic acid, the synthetic form, needs to be converted to methyfolate (the active form) to be utilised by the body. However, this conversion process may not always be effective in some individuals. The latest research suggests that taking methylfolate directly may be more beneficial as it is already in the active and usable form. Vitamin D: Essential for bone health, immunity, and mood regulation, vitamin D plays a crucial role in women’s health. Low vitamin D levels have been linked to an increased frequency of menstrual disorders. Ensuring vitamin D levels are within the normal range can also help improve fertility. Omega-3 Fatty Acids: These provide anti-inflammatory benefits and are important for hormonal regulation, especially for ovulation. Omega-3 fatty acids can also increase blood flow to the uterus, reduce inflammation in the body, and improve the embryo’s ability to implant in the uterus. Multivitamin: A multivitamin ensures adequate intake of micronutrients, filling potential dietary gaps and supporting overall health. It’s a convenient way to ensure you’re getting a broad spectrum of essential vitamins and minerals necessary for optimal health. 71-year-old Veronica McLaughlin, from Ballycastle, had been suffering with constant tinnitus and a blocked ear feeling. The humming in her ear, a feeling of a build up of pressure and dizziness was severely affecting her quality of life. Veronica, when did your tinnitus V\PSWRPV EHJLQ" b 15 years ago I woke up one morning and the bedroom was spinning. I was also extremely nauseous and had terrible dizziness. It was so bad that my GP came to my house as I couldn’t go out. I was referred to an ENT consultant and they diagnosed me with Meniere’s disease. The dizziness and sickness initially was treated with injections into my inner ear. I also had a feeling of pressure building up in my ear along with a humming sound, and reduced hearing in my ear. The feeling of pressure, blocked up ear and the humming sound got worse as time went on. How did tinnitus and the blocked ear feeling affect your life? I was always an outgoing, lively person but with the tinnitus, blocked up feeling and dizziness all I wanted to do was lie down with P\ KHDG RQ D SLOORZ , KDG QR FRQƓGHQFH and feared going out as I was worried that I would have an episode in public which was very embarrassing as I would have to lie down or hold onto a wall to steady myself. What led you to Apex Headache Clinic? My ENT consultant’s next step was to insert a tube into my ear to try to relieve the build up of pressure, but he suggested that I try SK\VLR ƓUVW EHIRUH JRLQJ GRZQ WKDW URXWH , had tried physio elsewhere in the past and the exercises that I had been given made me feel worse. I wasn’t keen on the idea of physio until a friend of mine said her son had

QEST Exhibition and Showcase I had the privilege of attending the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST) Showcase Exhibition, held in partnership with Craft NI, recently. QEST supports the training and education of talented and aspiring craftspeople across the UK through scholarships, Emerging Maker grants and apprenticeships. This Showcase, which was on display in Craft NI on Royal Avenue, was QEST’s ﬁrst exhibition in Northern Ireland. It presented the work of 17 QEST alumni who are based in or from the island of Ireland. The range of crafts exhibited included glass, handloom weaving, luthiery, willow sculpture, wrought iron putter making and silversmithing. During the evening I had the chance to speak to some of our local scholars, such as mother and daughter, Cara and Caitlin Murphy.. Cara displayed eight silver bowls which showcased her talent and silversmithing and enameling skills. Her daughter, Caitlin, is the newly announced 2023 QEST Mark & Tara Boddington Emerging Maker and showcased her luxurious range of jewellery. Cara explained that she achieved her scholarship at the same time as several other local craft makers. “It was nice to see Northern Ireland so well represented.” Caitlin followed in her mother’s footsteps on her QEST experience. She said: “For me it’s really nice to exhibit beside those scholars who have gone before me and to see the standard of their work.” Mario Sierra from family-run Mourne Textiles showcased a selection of furnishing textiles and scarves. These were handwoven on the loom. Mario’s passion for his craft was palpable and he explained the importance of QEST, allowing him to reach the next level. “I got these looms but couldn’t get them up and running. I found someone who could teach me. QEST made that happen.” Wonderfully, the craft man from Killarney Weavers who showed Mario how to work the looms learned his craft as an apprentice of Mario’s grandmother. In Mario’s words,”it was a beautiful, circular journey.” Aaron Leach, owner of Swifts Forge, discussed his hand forged luxury wrought iron putter. He explained, after Covid, he had to rewrite his business plan. QEST helped him grow a new business using his talents as a blacksmith. He now creates bespoke luxury golf items for the likes of acting legend Bill Murray. However, whilst it is very much a business, he explains, “the putters are my creative outlet.” And what magniﬁcent pieces of art they are! QEST is clearly vital in helping skilled makers learn and develop but it also, in the words of Craft NI Director Katherine McDonald, “reminds us of the talented craft makers that are a credit to Northern Ireland.” The opening of the QEST Showcase Exhibition took place on 1 February. It runs until 22 March.

Navigating Queer Landscapes Cathedral Quarter photography centre Belfast Exposed, together with Embrace Style, recently supported the Queer Artist Forum to showcase some work from its members on the walls of the east Belfast salon. Artists Vesper MacKenzie and Aidan Geary brought their work together for ’Navigating Queer Landscapes’, a mini showcase highlighting the struggle against societal norms, with resilience and perseverance key themes connecting their work, while being very different in style. Friends and family joined the two artists, together with the teams from Embrace Style and Belfast Exposed, to ofﬁcially launch the exhibition which will be on display for salon patrons and passersby to enjoy. Established in early 2023, the Queer Artists Forum provides a space for discussion, peer-to-peer engagement, artistic development and career support for lens-based artists from the LGBTQIA+ community. Embrace Style opened its doors in April last year as a gender-neutral hair and beauty salon, providing a safe and understanding space for those who feel uncomfortable or unwelcome in more traditional salon settings.

Little Women at the Lyric Theatre Are you a Meg, Jo, Beth or Amy? That was the question at the Lyric Theatre’s opening night of its production of the cherished classic Little Women. With a dress code to mark your allegiance, I donned my most purple hued ensemble to show I was team Jo. Other audience members showing their support included: writer Paul McVeigh; actress Kerri Quinn; and actor Gerard McCabe. Literature lovers have had the chance to grow fond of each of these ‘little women’ through the numerous ﬁlm adaptations of the Louisa May Alcott classic. However, this was my ﬁrst time seeing it interpreted for stage. Adapted by Anne-Marie Casey and

staged by Emily Foran, this production was fresh and heart-warming and balanced the saccharine moments with a healthy dose of humour and sass. The story is about the March sisters: Meg (Ruby Campbell), Jo (Marty Breen), Beth (Maura Bird), and Amy (Tara Cush) as they navigate the challenges of the Civil War era. Under the wing of Marmee March (Jo Donnelly), and Aunt March (Alison Harding), we follow as each of the sisters shake off expectations and follow their hearts on their journey to womanhood. With this production, Anne-Marie Casey and Emily Foran have shown that Little Women is as relevant today as ever. The

female-dominated production celebrates women who write their own stories and forge their own paths. The performances from the women on stage, especially Marty Breen portraying the force of nature that is Jo, were all truly captivating and at times incredibly moving. There is also performances from the wonderful Shaun Blaney, Cillian Lenaghan and Ash Rizi, but all eyes were on the March sisters. An enduring tale of love, resilience and persistence, this bold and beautiful staging of Little Women was the perfect way for the Lyric Theatre to open its 2024 theatrical offerings. The opening of Little Women took place on 7 February.

Featuring 291 rooms, The Gantry brings a thrilling collection of food and drink destinations to Stratford: an Italian Food Hall on the ground floor, a dedicated sparkling bar, an all-day restaurant and an 18th floor sky restaurant and bar with panoramic views across the city. Taking over the 1st floor, the hotel’s main dining spot is Union Social. Flanked on one side with an elegant cocktail bar and open kitchen and on the other with floor-to-ceiling windows and a huge wraparound terrace, the venue combines the ever-changing landscape of Stratford with an industrialinfluenced interior. Coupe Bar is The Gantry’s very own Sparkling Bar. Occupying an eye-catching illuminated counter bar, with its own banquette seating and outdoor terrace, Coupe at Union Social offers an everchanging menu of effervescent specialities, from championing English sparkling wine to sparkling tea. You don’t need to be getting hitched, however, to visit this fantastic hotel in a historic and emerging part of London. This was my third stay in Stratford and I would highly recommend it as a base from which to explore London. It has undergone a dramatic transformation since the 2012 Olympics and, with its laid-back vibe, it is a great place to chill after the hustle and buzzle of central London. While you are 110

MODEL RAIL EXHIBITION Gordon Hunt exhibited his ‘Donaghadee Railway Station’ model railway layout at the Model Rail Scotland 2024 Show held in Glasgow on 23rd-25th February. Although it was an intensive, but enjoyable, three days, the layout performed extremely well and received excellent complimentary feedback from the public. Gordon was supported by some members from the Ulster Model Railway Club and the Northern Counties Group. The layout depicts what the Donaghadee railway station looked like just before it closed in 1950. Gordon sometimes runs more modern Northern Ireland Railways trains on the layout just to show people what things would have looked like if the station hadn’t closed. The layout’s next outing will be at the North Down Model Show due to be held in the Bangor Grammer School on 23rd & 24th March 2024. 122

The Maurice Williamson Boys’ Brigade Heritage Museum

Titanic Belfast, the world’s most authentic Titanic visitor experience, is located on the spot where the famous ship was designed, built and launched. New Exhibitions Open at Ards Arts Centre Ards Arts Centre in Newtownards is delighted to open two new art exhibitions for the month of March: The Nature of Things, a joint exhibition by Eleanor Wheeler and Anushiya Sundaralingam and The Searchers, a solo exhibition by Paul van Reid. The artists will present a selection of sculpture and works on paper that are inspired by the natural world; using form, pattern, texture, colour and metaphor. The works will be both contrasting and complementary; coming together as a whole and creating a visual conversation about the common themes that inspire them. The exhibition can be viewed in the Georgian Gallery. Paul van Reid is a Belfast-based artist who has work published with Tangerine Press, Dig with It magazine and shown in QSS and The Engine Room galleries. Reid’s paintings explore ideas around themes of power, desire, belief, mortality and consciousness.

Derry Girls Experience The Derry Girls Experience opened in July 2023, with plans to remain at the Tower Museum for one year. Due to high demand, the awardwinning exhibition is extended for another year until July 2025. See original memorabilia from the hit show, like Erin’s diary, Aunt Sarah’s famous pyjamas and Ma Mary’s Woolworths jumper, not to mention the infamous Spice Girls costumes! How strong is the competition to your business? Is competition in your chosen sector intense, or weak? Do you have any Unique Selling Points (USPs) to differentiate yourself from the competition? Have you secured funding for your startup? Many new businesses are self-funded, however, others may require a business bank or loan. Ensure you have a contingency fund in case start-up costs are higher than you initially expected. Are there any industry-specific issues you should be aware of? Make sure you apply for any licenses or organisation memberships if they are legally or otherwise required in your line of business. Also ensure you have adequate insurance

cover in place – this is mandatory if you have any employees. Have you got the right skills to run your business? Try to be objective and honestly assess your own skill set (ask colleagues, family members and friends for their input). You must be honest about your weaknesses as well as strengths and be prepared to seek outside help if it is needed. Are you personally suited to running a business on your own? Although there is no blueprint for a successful business owner, you do need ‘guts’ to go it alone, tenacity, and to be prepared to give your all to your new venture. Only when you are prepared to give 100 percent to a business is it likely to succeed. What business structure are you going to use? The majority of small businesses are run as sole traderships, partnerships or limited companies. You should consider carefully which structure suits you and your business going forward. 129

Are you being realistic? It is hard to be completely objective when setting up a business for the first time. Not only is it crucial to spend most of your prestartup time researching the market for your product or service, but you should also solicit opinions from people you trust. Hire a good accountant Your accountant is likely to be your most important adviser during your time as a business owner. Ask for recommendations from other business owners. Do you have an exit strategy? If things go well, you will have the luxury of one day thinking about expanding the business, selling it on, or bringing on business partners. If you own the business with other people, make sure you have a partnership or shareholders agreement to fall back on… just in case.

MARIE CURIE GALA The Marie Curie Northern Ireland Development Board hosted a Gala Event, ‘A Night’s Craic’ at the Europa Hotel on 2nd of March. The entertainment-packed night, hosted by local DJ Ryan Hand, featured Canaries-based cabaret act, MHT and local band ‘No Oil Paintings’. Exciting auction lots, including a World Rally Car Experience with James Lecky, golfing with James Nesbitt and tickets to what is the hoped for Rugby 6 Nations Grand Slam decider with Guests of event sponsors from Kwik-Fit. Scotland in Dublin ensured that it was a successful night of fundraising. With funds still coming in, the organisers are hopeful of being able to donate £50,000 in support of Marie Curie’s work in delivering end-of-life care across NI. They wish to thank everyone who bought tables and donated, as it was their generosity that made it all possible.

1. What do you love most about your job? I get to talk about space every day! Armagh Observatory and Planetarium is Northern Ireland’s leading astronomical research and education facility, and it’s such a fantastic place to visit for anyone interested in astronomy and the world around us. As a tours and outreach officer, I love being able to deliver programmes that highlight just how fascinating our universe really is to people far and wide. There can be a lot of travelling too, and that is a perk of the job. 2. What has been your career highlight to date? Completing my PhD. It was challenging, but there were many highlights, such as presenting my work and meeting big names in my field at international conferences. Also my work analysing the interstellar comet 2I/Borisov, which flew through our solar system a few years ago. 3. What are your favourite hobbies/ activities outside of work? Reading, hiking, stargazing (yes, really!). 4. What is your daily routine? There isn’t one. The only staple of my days is that they are varied in all aspects, which is something that I enjoy. No two days as a tours and outreach officer are the same, especially when you are meeting new people every day. 5. Do you have a specific fitness regime? I don’t necessarily have a fitness regime, but I do like to be outdoors whether that is walking, running, hiking, or climbing. I also love to swim. One thing I love about Armagh, and Northern Ireland in general, is that there are so many cool places to explore. 6. Do you have any tips for staying positive? What works for me is knowing that the world, and the universe around us, is just such a fascinating place. There is always more

to learn and ﬁnd out, as our knowledge of the universe is constantly expanding and evolving. 7. What do you think is the best thing about living in Northern Ireland? There are many positive aspects of living in Northern Ireland, but for me it has to be the nature on our doorstep and the warmth of the people living here. One of the reasons I love my role as a tours and outreach oﬃcer is because it allows me to pursue my passion for astronomy whilst also helping to inspire NI’s next generation of STEM leaders. 8. What is your mantra or favourite quote that you live by? “I suppose the thing I most would have liked to have known or been reassured about is that in the world, what counts more than talent, what counts more than energy or concentration or commitment, or anything else – is kindness. And the more in the world that you encounter kindness and cheerfulness – which is its kind of amiable uncle or aunt – the better the world always is. And all the big words: virtue, justice, truth – are dwarfed by the greatness of kindness.” Stephen Fry quoted this in an interview discussing what he wished he had known at age 18. 140

9. Who has been your biggest influence? That’s hard to answer. There are too many fantastic scientists to single out just one – and of course there are also all my amazing colleagues.

10. FAVOURITE Movie: Lord of the Rings trilogy – extended editions, of course.
