A LETTER TO THE NEW WARHAWKS Congratulations on your decision to attend the University of Louisiana at Monroe! As this new chapter of your life unfolds, we encourage you to consider taking that first step of being active on your new campus by joining a sorority or fraternity. We have a vast Greek community here at ULM that continues to exceed in academics, campus involvement, philanthropic events, and community service. Our Greek community allows members the chance to become involved on- and off-campus through philanthropic endeavors, athletics, academics, and leadership development all while building and maintaining lasting relationships. Regardless of how far you will travel to ULM, your chosen organization will be your home away from home just as your newfound brothers or sisters will become family. For these reasons, joining our Greek community has the potential to be one of the best decisions you will make in college.

Your time spent at the University of Louisiana at Monroe will be the best years of your life, and we hope that this guide will provide you with a small glimpse into all the ways that Greek life can enhance your experience. WHAT ARE SORORITIES AND FRATERNITIES? Fraternities and sororities are student organizations whose primary purpose is the personal development of their members, as distinguished from honorary, professional, departmental, and service fraternities. Unlike most other student organizations, membership in a social fraternity or sorority is a lifetime affiliation, and students are not permitted to be initiated into more than one fraternity or sorority. Fraternities and sororities promote intimate relationship bonds of brotherhood/sisterhood and members typically refer to fellow members as “brothers” or “sisters.” Traditionally, most fraternities and sororities are designated by Greek letters; hence, they are often referred to as “Greek organizations,” “the Greek community,” or simply “Greeks.” ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT aspects of joining a fraternity or sorority is the bond of brotherhood and sisterhood. There is a sense of unity and friendship among members of each chapter, as well as a feeling of Greek unity on campus. The recruitment process introduces students to individuals who come together to share common interests and form a cohesive group. It is often said, “Friendships developed in college will last a lifetime.” Greek life is an experience that one never forgets. Students find that members of their chapter will have similar goals, values and ideals. Having these things in common with the organization provides a sense of acceptance and belonging. Brothers and sisters will be there to share the college experience but will also stay close for years to come.

ULM recognizes fifteen Greek organizations — three fraternities within the Interfraternity Fraternity Council, four sororities within the National Panhellenic Conference, and eight sororities and fraternities within the National Pan-Hellenic Council — each of which is a campus chapter of a national group. Regardless of the fraternity or sorority a student chooses, membership in a Greek organization will enhance the collegiate experience. ULM’s Greek community invites all students interested in joining a fraternity or sorority to participate in the membership recruitment or membership intake process. Dates of these events are available in the Greek Life office and on the Greek Life website.

SCHOLARSHIP THE PURPOSE OF COLLEGE is to achieve an education, and Greek organizations are committed to their fraternity and sorority value of academic achievement. Providing an atmosphere in which each member can achieve academic self-responsibility is of utmost importance. Many chapters assist new members in developing good study habits and time management skills, making the adjustment to college easier. Earning a college degree is why students go to college. Being a member of a fraternity or sorority enhances the academic experience for students, most often excelling beyond their college peers. Members are expected to meet specific GPA requirements and encouraged to meet with faculty, use campus resources for academic support, and are recognized for their high academic performance at regular scholarship events and opportunities to join academic honor societies. Many chapters award scholarships annually to recognize students who have maintained exceptional grades and shown leadership in the chapter. A requirement to join and stay in a Greek chapter is to have and maintain a specific GPA. The average set by each chapter must correlate with its bylaws (essentially a rule book the chapter and every member must follow). It is typically greater than the GPA required by the school, which means that Greek members are often set to higher standards. Each semester, the office of Fraternity & Sorority Life compiles grade information from each chapter to track progress. These reports are used to measure achievements and successes at a regional and national level. Part of this report is listed below:

ITS ALL GREEK TO ME ACTIVE: an undergraduate who has been initiated into lifelong membership. ALUMNI: Greek members who are college graduates. ALUMNA: a sorority member who is no longer in college; plural is alumnae. CITY PANHELLENIC: the cooperative community organization of alumnae members of NPC sororities. BID: an invitation to a potential member to join a sorority or fraternity. No bid (written or oral) may be extended during formal recruitment except through Panhellenic/Interfraternity Council-a bid issued in any other manner is not binding and is considered illegal. BID LIST: used in bid matching to coordinate sorority and fraternity and potential member preferences. CHAPTER: the name applied to the local organization of a national fraternity or sorority. COLLEGE PANHELLENIC: the cooperative campus organization of collegiate members of NPC sororities. CONTINUOUS OPEN BIDDING (COB): an opportunity for chapters. that do not reach quota during primary recruitment to bid to quota and/or for chapters that are not at total to bid to total. The COB process is informal and not all chapters will participate in COB. EVENT/ROUND: a structured recruitment event, usually repeated several times during formal recruitment. EXCHANGE: a social activity involving two or more Greek organizations. FORMAL RECRUITMENT: a designated membership recruitment time period during which a series of organized activities are held by each sorority, fraternity, and is governed by Panhellenic/IFC. GAMMA CHI: NPC undergraduate recruitment advisor for female potential members. IFC: Interfraternity Council – the governing body of the fraternity system. INTAKE: the period of education before initiation when NPHC new members learn the history and traditions of the organization. INTEREST MEETING: meeting for prospective members to receive information about and meet members of an NPHC organization. INITIATION: a ritual ceremony through which new members learn the full meaning of their Greek organization. LEGACY: usually a potential member who is the sibling, child, or grandchild of an active member or an alumni of a Greek organization. LINE: (also referred to as “Ship”): a group of new members in a specific NPHC chapter, in a specific semester. MEMBERSHIP SELECTION: the right of each sorority and fraternity to select their own members.

NEOPHYTE: New member of an NPHC organization; also called a “Neo.” NEW/ASSOCIATE MEMBER: a student who has accepted the bid or invitation for membership in a Greek organization but has not been initiated. NIC: North-American Interfraternity Conference – a national confederation of 64 men’s fraternities. NPC: National Panhellenic Conference – the conference body of the 26 women’s sororities established in 1902 to support the collegiate and alumnae chapters of the NPC member groups. NPHC: National Pan-Hellenic Council – the national governing body for the nine historically African-American sororities and fraternities. NPHC NEW MEMBER PRESENTATION: event where newly initiated members of an NPHC group perform step routines and reveal themselves to the public after their intake period. PHC: Panhellenic Council - the governing body of the sorority system. POTENTIAL MEMBER (PM): a student who is interested in becoming a member of a Greek organization and has registered for the formal recruitment process. PREFERENCE: the final round of formal recruitment events. PROPHYTE: An older member of an NPHC organization. QUOTA: the number of women each NPC sorority may pledge during formal recruitment (number varies each year). RECOMMENDATION: a letter written by alumnae members of sororities recommending a potential member for membership. RECRUITMENT COUNSELOR: a collegiate Panhellenic representative who is not in contact with her own chapter during recruitment and is available to guide potential new members through the recruitment process, also called Gamma Chi. RELEASE: a PM is released from the recruitment process when she no longer has invitations to sorority events or chooses to not accept the invitation she receives. RHO CHI: IFC undergraduate Recruitment Advisor for male potential new members. SILENCE: the period of time during the formal recruitment process when there is no communication between NPC potential members and sorority members. SINGLE INTENTIONAL PREFERENCE: when a potential member only lists one NPC sorority on her preference card when she has several options. STEPPING/STEP SHOW: a tradition of NPHC organizations where routines are performed. TOTAL: the allowable chapter size on a campus, as determined by the College Panhellenic that includes both new and initiated members. Chapters that fall under total are allowed to participate in continuous open bidding until they reach total.

A Letter to the Parents, Being a member of the ULM Greek Community is both an honor and a responsibility. As a vibrant part of ULM for more than 60 years, members of fraternities and sororities are afforded many opportunities through lifetime friendship, social, leadership, philanthropic, service and academic opportunities and support. Equally, these opportunities and support are coupled with expectations. Through the 5 Star program, fraternities and sororities are expected to focus on education and training, accountability, policies, advisory support, co-curricular opportunities, advisory support and housing. INTERFRATERNITY COUNCIL (IFC) The Interfraternity Council (IFC) is the governing body for 3 fraternities on ULM's campus. This council establishes guidelines for managing each of these chapters. The purpose of the council is to promote unity among the individual chapters, provide relations between the Greek community and ULM, provide leadership and structured programs to promote fraternity growth and development, and to see that all rules, policies, and regulations passed by the council are followed through by the fraternities.Â ULM's IFC consists of the following: Delta Sigma Phi Kappa Alpha Order Kappa Sigma

Recruitment IFC hosts a formal recruitment each fall. During this time, men at ULM are eligible to register for recruitment as long as they are a full-time student (12 hour minimum) enrolled oncampus, in good standing with ULM, and have a minimum of a 2.5 cumulative GPA. This year recruitment will be Aug 24-Aug 29. Here at the Zeta Pi chapter of Delta Sigma Phi, we strive to create good boys into better men. We are a chapter of 40+ members in a widespread of majors and other RSO’s such as CAB, SGA, 31 Ambassadors, and many more. Our members are very diverse such as having members from not only all around the state and country, but also members from Bonaire, Honduras, Nepal, and China. Above all else, we value culture harmony and friendship. We are men who set the standard for excellence and aim to provide the best, lifelong experience for our members – shaping the lives of others. We are the Gamma Nu Chapter of the Kappa Alpha Order. Kappa Alpha Order (commonly known as Kappa Alpha, KA, or "the Order") is a social fraternity and fraternalÂ order. The Order has more than 150,000 initiated members.The members of Kappa Alpha Order pride themselves on a tradition of chivalry and of the values of the gentleman. This is reminiscent of a romanticized version of the Knights of the Crusades. This all culminates into a modern college fraternal experience. A member of Kappa Alpha Order strives to offer reverence to both God and women, as described in the motto. Further, the idea that "Excellence is our Aim" further emboldens members to always apply themselves to self-improvement, realizing that you should always continue to strive for excellence. Finally, being that the organization is an Order, members typically have an idea of the above values before joining. Kappa Alpha does not intend to change anyone, rather bond together those men who have these similar values so that they may experience brotherhood, and pursue improvement, with one another.

Kappa Sigma, of ULM, was charted on May 6th, 1967 under the four pillars of Fellowship, Leadership, Scholarship, and Service. We first look to establish a brotherhood of exceptional men which will not last for a day, or an hour, or a college term only, but for life. Secondly, we promote Leadership throughout campus. Our brothers excel in their professional programs, Student Government Association, PREP Staff, Hawkseekers, religious groups, and other programs on campus and in the community. It is our belief that Scholarship is the key to success. We hold our brothers accountable for their grades and look to promote success in their journey as an undergraduate student. Lastly, we take great pride in our Service to the community. Two of our larger philanthropies include Military Heroes Campaign, a philanthropic organization founded by Kappa Sigma in 2007 to support military veterans and their families, and our annual Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation fundraiser we put on with AKA, which won Greek Collaborative Program of the Year. Whether it be working in our community or working from home during shutdown, the men of Kappa Sigma work hard on bettering the campus and community under the firm belief that you cannot quarantine brotherhood.

As values-based organizations, the 4 members of NPC live their missions, with their members providing millions of dollars in philanthropic support to dozens of worthy causes and pursuing millions of additional hours in community service. NPC also supports a national network of collegiate and alumnae Panhellenic associations that are crucial to nurturing healthy fraternity and sorority communities. Alpha Omicron Pi was founded on the ideals of character, dignity, scholarship, and college loyalty. All members of the Fraternity, collegiate and alumnae, are expected to live these values to the fullest and carry the spirit of AOII into the world around them. Whether you meet an AOII in class, throughout recruitment, off campus, or even after graduation, she is sure to bring light to your life. Members of the Fraternity are called to carry themselves with confidence as they represent our organization and treat everyone they meet with the utmost respect. AOII encourages all members to excel academically and has many programs designed to assist women in achieving their academic goals. Kappa Delta was founded in 1897 by four women at a small university in Virginia. Since then, Kappa Delta Sorority has grown into a national organization for women committed to providing opportunities and experiences that promotes personal and professional growth for a lifetime. In 1967, the Delta Zeta chapter of Kappa Delta was founded on ULM’s campus. Members have gained friendships, mentors, role models, and a community among the women who are members of this chapter both past and present. Prevent Child Abuse America (PCAA) and Girl Scouts of the USA are Kappa Delta’s two national philanthropies. Through events with Girl Scouts, members are able to build confidence in the girls of our community and see firsthand the impact they make in the lives of girls. Each year, the chapter hosts a Shamrock 5K to raise money for PCAA and the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home. On top of having the Highest GPA of Greek Life, Kappa Delta encourages its members to excel both within the chapter as well as on campus in other organizations. Members are participants in a variety of organizations including PREP Staff, Mardi Gras and Homecoming Court, Campus Activities Board, and Student Government Association. Nationally, our Delta Zeta chapter was awarded Academic Development Program of the Year, National Academic Excellence Award, and Highest Dollar Sales for National Kappa Delta Magazine Sales. Our chapter was also selected as a Merit Chapter in 2017 and 2019. This is a highly distinguished honor given to the top 10% of all Kappa Delta Chapters, and we are incredibly honored and humbled to receive this title.

Phi Mu - Alpha Rho Fun Facts

Phi Mu Fraternity of Alpha Rho was the first Greek organization founded on ULM's campus in 1956. Phi Mu was founded on three ideals: love, honor and truth which is still carried out today after 168 years of sisterhood. Phi Mu is a women’s organization which provides personal and academic development, service to others, commitment to excellence and lifelong friendships. Phi Mu’s national philanthropy is Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. The chapter holds multiple fundraising events throughout the school year to raise money for the children receiving treatment at CMN hospitals. Phi Mu is also dedicated to being active and giving back to our community; chapter members have participated in many community service projects here in Monroe. You can find Phi Mu members involved in many campus organizations including serving on SGA, 31 Ambassadors, ULM Honors Program, and being crowned Homecoming Queen. Phi Mu is very proud of all they have accomplished this school year. NATIONAL PAN-HELLENIC COUNCIL (NPHC) The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), commonly known as the Divine Nine, is the governing council to 8 sororities and fraternities on ULM's campus. The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) was founded May 10, 1930 on the campus of Howard University in Washington DC. It serves as the umbrella organization for the historically, but not exclusively, black Greek-lettered organizations. The NPHC was chartered at LSU February 28, 1992. NPHC promotes interaction through forums, meetings, and other mediums for the exchange of information, and engages in cooperative programming and initiatives through various activities and functions. ULM's NPHC consists of the following: Sororities: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. Recruitment In order to be considered for the NPHC Membership Intake Process, the individual must have at least a 2.6 GPA, 12 cumulative hours, and attend NPHC Greekish and NPHC Greek 1 on 1. During the NPHC Greek 1 on 1, you will be given a document to sign regarding Hazing. The Greek Life Office must have this document signed and on file. The Theta Zeta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was chartered on the campus of North East Louisiana on December 1, 1973 as the first predominately black sorority on campus of Northeast Louisiana University( now known as University of Louisiana at Monroe). Theta Zeta is known for its informational PreTEA Wednesdays, where they inform students on ULMâ€™s campus on different awareness months at least once every month. They also were the first organization to start Professional Program forum, to inform students on all the professional programs that ULM has to offer.Theta Zeta chapter continues to serve in numerous community service projects on campus and in the community. The chapter has initiated many members over the past 46 years. These college age women of high scholastic and ethical standards have graduated to become successful in their vocations and a service to all mankind.

The Lambda Rho Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., was chartered October 26, 1974 on the campus of Northeast Louisiana University. The eleven illustrious women set out to spread the works of Delta Sigma Theta on NLUâ€™s campus in hopes of bringing awareness to areas of physical and mental health, educational development, economic development, international awareness, and lastly political awareness and involvement. The Lambda Rho Chapter of DST maintained the highest Greek GPA on campus for six consecutive semesters while presumptively participating in extracurricular activities and events.

In the Fall 1972, on the campus of Northeast Louisiana University in Monroe, La., several young men started a quest to be initiated into the fraternity of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. It was under the leadership and supervision of the Monroe Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. this historical event began. Twelve young men became candidates for initiation as an undergraduate chapter as charter members. The line name for these Initiates tagged them as the Omnipotent 12. It was after two years In the Fall of 1974, the Eta Pi Chapter was charted on November 17, 1974. Eta Pi recently celebrated over 45 years in the Bond of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. The undergraduate chapter has produced many brothers who have achieved in every field of human endeavor.Guide Right is a program for the educational and occupational guidance of youth, primarily inspirational and informational in character. Its reach extends to high schools and colleges alike. In the latter, giving due attention to the needs of undergraduate Brothers. Guide Right is the fraternity's national service program. Guide Right encompasses many of our youth oriented programs such as mentoring, college preparatory programs, and tutoring. However, the Flagship Initiative of the Guide Right Service Program is the Kappa Leadership Development League. Kappa League, formally known as the Kappa Instructional Leadership League, is the national youth initiative of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated. The Kappa Kappa Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. was chartered on April 7, 1978, on the campus of Northeast Louisiana University. Some of the events the chapter hosts include financial stability seminars, mental heath forums, sexual health awareness discussions, game nights that promote bonding, and much more. Aside from events thrown on campus, the chapter partakes in an Adopt-A-School education program every week at Jack Hayes Elementary and an Adopt-ARoad cleanup project every other Saturday.
