HEADTEACHER ’ S WELCOME The autumn edition of sUCCess always generates a warm glow of nostalgia – for the mild weather of last summer, the excitement of results days and the wonder of Prize Day. It’s so good to have this reminder of all the exciting things that have happened at this fantastic school over the last 15 weeks. Exam results in August proved to be another high point for the school, with new records set at A level and continued success at GCSE. Both the English and mathematics departments achieved remarkable results and many other departments achieved outstanding outcomes for our students.

Our students were involved in trips to Tanzania, a two-week rugby tour of South Africa and a trip to Normandy. Prize Day this year reached new heights with outstanding performances of Bugsy Malone, a Year 10 drama improvised piece and our incredible national champion cheerleaders all given extra showbiz appeal with X Factor stars Union J, who were themselves so “blown away” by our pupils that they asked if we would invite them back to UCC at some point in the future.

All of this as well as shoe box appeals; a Christmas single “Will it Snow This Xmas”; trips to London, Edinburgh and Manchester; the Sleeping Beauty panto and lots, lots more…

PRIZE DAY 2016 WITH OUR SPECIAL GUESTS UNION J The fifth annual UCC Prize Day celebration saw over 130 prizes awarded to students by special guests Union J. Fantastic performances by dance, drama and music students, and a tremendous display from our national champion cheerleading squad – the UCC Wolves – received massive applause. Union J were great guests who really entered into the spirit of the prize day ceremony.

The highlight for the audience was the lads singing an a capella version of the Shawn Mendes song ‘Stitches’.

As Headteacher Mr Pattinson said: “You always know when it’s prize day at UCC, with students in their smartest uniforms and staff in their glitter make-up! This was our most anticipated prize day yet, with guests Union J. Since the event, Union J member Josh Cuthbert has said that the band had a brilliant time, were blown away by the talent of the student dancers, musicians, cheerleaders and performers and that they’d enjoyed the day so much they would love to come back to UCC – and we’d love to have them back! This year’s prize day was the best yet. I can’t tell you how proud I am of all the prize winners and of all the work that goes into making this phenomenal event truly unique to UCC.”

After more than a year fundraising, 16 students and 5 members of staff left UCC on 6 July for Tanzania. After a few days in Dar Es Salaam we moved on to an orphanage for 120 teenage girls. The lifechanging challenges faced by these students – from no electricity or flushing toilets to their genuine happiness despite material poverty – left us all with unforgettable memories. Other experiences on our trip included a safari and visits to a painting cooperative and a folk museum, as well as a few days on Zanzibar.

SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR Over 140 pupils were nominated for awards at the annual UCC Sports Personality of the Year. Achievements in all areas of sporting endeavour are recognised and eight students went through for the ‘big’ award.

Mia Simpson-Sullivan won the title, which was previously held by her sister, by just one vote!
