Just a few WIL (Work-Integrated Learning) opportunities As Canada’s job-market evolves, ULethbridge is working hard to make sure you are prepared. We offer exceptional work-integrated learning, experiential learning and career services so every student can benefit from outstanding academic and professional development experience.

ULethbridge Calgary campus student, Lionel Migrino (BMgt ‘22), was awarded the 2021 Co-operative Education and Work Integrated Learning Canada Student of the Year.

His co-operative education work placement called for leaders at Pembina Pipeline Corporation to see the ability in disability. As someone who lives with cerebral palsy, this work was personal.

How can they empower ability? All I want is for people to see that ability in disability because we’re all capable, it’s just if people will give us an opportunity.”

CAREER EXPERIENCE

New WIL Learning Opportunities Applied studies are customized WIL courses that give students academic credit for combining work (paid or volunteer) and academic studies relevant to their program.

The Crooks Work-Integrated Learning Program in Liberal Education gives students the chance to apply what they learn in the classroom to a paid-work setting.

Students will develop their professional skills through these practical hands-on experiences, whether in research, volunteer or community roles with local organizations.

The Fine Arts Experiential Student Success Fund empowers students to participate in professional training and research initiatives to apply and expand their skills, network with potential employers and explore career options.

Work2Learn | Recognizing the financial demands students face and the difficulty of finding part-time jobs, ULethbridge created Work2Learn. By investing in paid, WIL positions in Student Affairs, students can work on campus for five to 10 hours per week for a competitive hourly rate.

Last year, Blackfoot artist and ULethbridge student, Chataya Holy Singer designed a t-shirt for ULethbridge in collaboration with the City of Lethbridge in recognition of the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

“The significance of the design weaves the educational journey for Indigenous students and resiliency through the past, present and future.”

Through this experience, Chataya was contacted by organizers at the Moonlight Run to design their 2022 logo.

The logo symbolizes the reciprocity of life and balance, and is based on the buffalo, the prominent figure in Blackfoot culture. She added the Matapi symbol at the top, to represent the Blackfoot people and human beings.

“I use my art as a way to express my identity, creating works that reflect my spiritual beliefs, and traditional skills as a healing practice derived from my ancestors directly down the line. My art conveys themes of spirituality, traditional culture, language, and Indigenous worldview as I continue to learn about the Blackfoot way of life and integrating that knowledge into my work.”

CAREER EXPERIENCE

Straight out of high school, Gabriel Fisher entered the trades with the goal of becoming an electrician. After being injured on the job, Gabriel had to take time off to recover and discovered a passion for finance and investing.

He enrolled in the Dhillon School of Business at ULethbridge, allowing him to physically recover and prepare for the future. Although his interest in finance hasn’t waned, Gabriel decided that accounting was more aligned with his personal values of helping people and supporting his community.

“When I changed my degree to accounting, I decided to take part in a co-op. Many of the accounting firms have a positive relationship with ULethbridge; this allowed me to network with multiple accounting firms in southern Alberta in a short period of time. Ultimately, I secured an eightmonth co-op at MNP and have been learning something new every day. I will be pursuing my chartered professional accountant designation with them after I graduate.”

Jenn Biglin found a way to use pop culture in her Professional Semester III project and the result was not only a hit with her students, but she was one of the recipients of the Wigham Family Professional Inquiry Project Award.

After discovering that the school where she was doing her practicum had a focus on enhancing students’ vocabulary, Biglin wanted to assist with that goal.

“I had noticed that when I integrated popular television shows or popular aspects of pop culture into my lessons, engagement was much higher.”

Jenn envisions being able to use the project in her own English classroom one day.

“Not only do I think it gives autonomy to the students, but it adds a presence of ‘youth-ness’ to the classroom. I think it will teach kids to be conscious of the words used in their favourite pop culture items and that they do not need to feel insecure when they do not know a word because they will have the tools to find what it means from context, if need be.”

Living & learning communities Career Kickstart Cohort (CKC) The CKC will help you make the most of your studies and career-building opportunities at ULethbridge.

There are several milestones to achieve as a university student before reaching the ultimate goal of leveraging your studies and experiences into a fulfilling career.

Through the CKC, you will access career and professional development activities as well as experiential and work-integrated learning opportunities.

Discover unknown skills and passions, define meaningful career options and challenge yourself to explore new interests and intersections between work, life and learning.

Dhillon School of Business Edge (DSB Edge) DSB Edge is for students enrolled in a Bachelor of Management program and who are joining ULethbridge directly from high school. As part of DSB Edge, you’ll have a built-in community that enhances academic performance

and social success. You’ll make friends, find study partners, develop resilience, and fine-tune your interpersonal skills.

Gain exclusive access to a special DSB Edge student orientation, leadership development opportunities, networking events and other student activities. Most importantly, you will be a part of a tight-knit community of business-minded students.

The High School Youth Researcher Summer program (HYRS) HYRS is a six-week consecutive program that runs each summer. Students gain hands-on science experience working on a multidisciplinary project with a team of PhD, master’s and undergraduate students – plus a stipend. This is a day program, students who participate in HYRS do not live on campus.

Early Start Experience (ESE) Take a liberal education course for full credit before the start of the Fall 2023 term! Liberal education teaches you how to think critically and become a global citizen.

The ESE is open to ULethbridge students in all bachelor’s degree programs. Students who live off-campus can still take part.

The Early Start Experience (ESE) promotes success and eases the transition from high school to university while giving you credit for your degree. Get to know the Lethbridge campus, meet fellow students and your professors, and learn about the resources we offer.

“Liberal education encouraged me to take courses that I likely would have otherwise overlooked. One course, Exploring Creativity, forced me to move outside of my comfort zone to focus on my own creativity and imagination.

Connecting the University of Lethbridge with Calgary’s East Village and the downtown core, the Calgary Campus offers flexible programs developed with the working professional in mind.

Our location and delivery methods are designed for maximum flexibility with your personal schedule. If you are looking to upgrade your skillset and credentials to advance your career, our ULethbridge Calgary Campus is well-suited for the working adult.

We know your life is complicated; you need a comprehensive learning experience to up-skill as quickly as possible and improve your job prospects. We offer faceto-face and blended instruction evenings and weekends, with some courses offered exclusively online.

Newly admitted high school students can complete a ULethbridge Bachelor of Management (General Management) degree and BVC Business Administration Diploma (Supply Chain Management) in four years. Students will take classes simultaneously through both institutions while following a shared curriculum for both credentials.

This is the only ULethbridge program with daytime classes on the Calgary Campus.

Calgary Students’ Association (CSA) The CSA is a non-profit, student-led club available to all students on the Calgary Campus. The CSA hosts social, community outreach, networking and career-building events focused on creating a fun and welcoming environment for students to grow socially and professionally. Every student on the Calgary Campus is welcome and encouraged to attend all CSA events.

Student Supports Students at our Calgary Campus have access to services including enrolment advising, academic advisors and learning supports. Our Calgary Campus delivery methods and supports are tailored to working adults. Students who are looking to apply directly from high school should consider opportunities at our Lethbridge Campus.

INNOVATIVE OFFERINGS Certificate in Arts and Science

Finance Diploma

The Certificate in Arts and Science is a gateway for students to complete a university credential faster than a standard degree. To apply, students need a passing grade in English Language Arts 30-1 (or an equivalent), or they can access it through the Post-Secondary Admission Route. Students can test the waters of post-secondary education on a part-time or full-time basis, choosing either an arts or science stream. At the completion of this ten-course program, they can apply to ladder their certificate into a degree.

Newly offered by the Dhillon School of Business, the Finance Diploma is a two-year (20-course) university credential without a four-year degree commitment. The diploma will prepare students for entry- and mid-level management positions. This program is suitable for anyone with at least a high school education and who wants to build on their financial knowledge or pursue a professional designation in finance (i.e., GFA, QAFP, or CFP).

Professional Degree Completion Dual Credit Dual credit is an opportunity for students in high school to take university entry-level courses while still attending high school. It introduces students to the rigors of postsecondary to ease the transition to university life and eventually to the workplace. Students will earn the usual five credits for a high school course and a three-credit course from ULethbridge.

As of Spring 2022, 433 students have participated in dual credit courses, with 167 dual credit participants joining ULethbridge for further studies.

Students who complete a professional degree in dentistry, law, medicine, social work or veterinary medicine at another institution following three years of approved full-time study at ULethbridge may qualify to receive their bachelor’s degree. This pathway is limited to the Faculty of Arts & Science and all 30-course programs must be first approved by the dean on a case-by-case basis. If your goal is to pursue one of these professional degrees, this may be a great choice. Consult with an academic advisor early in your program to help you navigate this route and seek your dean’s approval.

Additional Admission Routes Indigenous Student Success Cohort (ISSC) The Indigenous Student Success Cohort (ISSC) is a first-year credit program providing Indigenous students who don’t meet the general entrance requirements of ULethbridge an opportunity to find success at university.

The ISSC supplies core skills in a supportive environment attending to Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Learning.

It is also open to Indigenous students returning to university after an absence and, as space allows, to those who qualify for general admission but want the support provided by the group. Successful completion of the ISSC allows you to enter most ULethbridge programs. This is a full-time university program that may qualify for loans and other sources of funding. This eight-month (two-term), first-year experience program runs from September to April. It supplies a strong foundation of courses that can be credited to most programs at ULethbridge. The deadline to apply to the ISSC is August 31.

Mature Student Admission Mature student admission may be available to applicants who are 21-years of age or older and who do not meet our general admission standards. Life achievement may be considered if it has provided you with skills relevant to university success.

International Students ULethbridge is home to almost 1,000 international students from nearly 90 countries. For the most part, applicants who have completed secondary qualifications in other countries will be considered for admission under the high school admission route.

Non-native English speakers need to pass an English language proficiency test or take English for Academic Purposes (EAP) before they can enroll in classes.

The application deadline for international students is June 15 and a study permit is needed.

Dual Admission Dual admission agreements with the College of the Rockies and Medicine Hat College mean students can easily transfer to ULethbridge. Students are admitted to ULethbridge while still attending college, and benefit from continuing student registration privileges, certainty on program requirements, transferability of courses and access to ULethbridge student services.

We work hard to offset the cost of tuition with scholarships and paid work-integrated learning opportunities for students.

IN 2021-2022,

62% of new high school grads received financial awards averaging $1,041. $1.09 million was distributed to incoming new high school and transfer students through the Alberta Scholarship Program, ULethbridge awards and athletic awards. These award recipients received over $1,000 ($1,062) on average.

We have made it as simple as possible for you to apply for scholarships and awards. By completing both our general awards application and our undergraduate awards application online, you have access to approximately 90% of the available awards at ULethbridge!

Grade 11 Year June 30: Grade 11 Merit Award •

Five Grade 11 courses are used to decide the award average and will follow the same formula as general admission (English 20-1, three academics and a fifth distinct course) Online award application must be sent in your Grade 11 year.

Grade 12 Year December 15: Board of Governors’ Admission Scholarship •

The Board of Governors’ scholarship rewards applicants new to post-secondary (attending directly from high school or who have not attended any other post-secondary institutions before applying to ULethbridge) who apply early. This scholarship can be combined with ULethbridge High School Awards and the Grade 11 Merit Award.

Remember to apply early to maximize the value of your scholarships.

More than 45 awards are available specifically for Indigenous students.

These are granted primarily on academic achievement, although other criteria may also be considered.

Walker English was one of five students to receive a $10,000 UL50 Golden Jubilee award when he started his ULethbridge story.

This funding helped him reduce the financial pressure of paying for tuition and textbooks and meant that he could focus on his student experience. Walker has been able to explore his options, make many friends and work on campus for the past two summers at the “coolest job” he’s ever had with Destination Exploration.

SACRED BUFFALO STONE ULethbridge pays respect to the Blackfoot people — ­ past, present and future — while recognizing and honouring their rich cultural heritage, beliefs and relationship to the land. Our Blackfoot name is Iniskim, meaning Sacred Buffalo Stone, and was gifted to the University by Elder Bruce Wolf Child in 2002.​​

Since we opened our doors in 1967, Indigenous culture has been woven into the fabric of the University. Home to one of the first Indigenous Studies departments in Canada, ULethbridge is committed to including Indigenous Peoples in our plans and actions. We continue to revitalize our curriculum and are pleased to offer Indigenousfocused majors in every area of study.

We have many spaces on campus dedicated to building community such as Iikaisskini (ee-gus-ganee) Indigenous Services. The Iikaisskini (Low Horn) Gathering Centre is a hub for the University’s Indigenous outreach programs and events. In addition, the Tatsikiistamik Student Lounge is where students can gather, socialize and study together. Services are available for Indigenous students including several Smudge Rooms throughout campus, Elders, enrolment advising and Indigenous mentors.

Student Enrolment and Registrar Services (SEARS) The SEARS team will be with you every step of your ULethbridge journey, from recruitment to Convocation and everything inbetween. SEARS serves students in a number of ways including admissions, campus tours, course registration, timetabling, student records, academic calendar, transcripts and more.

Academic Advising

Assists with course selection, program planning and program changes as well as registration for courses not offered via online registration. Each Faculty has its own academic advisors.

Future and first-year students can arrange enrolment advising appointments with a recruitment officer.

Accommodated Learning Centre

Provides individual learning plans, exam accommodations, assistive technologies, alternate format textbooks and funding assistance as well as personalized supports.

Career Bridge: Centre for Work-Integrated Learning and Career Development

Career Bridge brings together co-operative education, applied studies, career coaching and planning and the MyExperience Transcript. The team facilitates work-integrated learning and career development opportunities so all students benefit from exceptional academic and professional experiences.

Counselling Services

Offers brief individual counselling at no cost. Counselling is confidential and can help students with a variety of personal issues like adjusting to university life, anxiety, relationships and more.

Other services include group counselling, wellness workshops and certifications, as well as the Student Wellness Ambassador Program.

Indigenous Mentors Program

Funded through a generous donation from Scotiabank, we offer two types of mentoring: youth and alumni. One pairs a current ULethbridge Indigenous student with an Indigenous youth from the local community where participants spend time engaging in social activities. The other pairs a current ULethbridge Indigenous student with an Indigenous alum who offers guidance and support.

Iikaisskini Indigenous Services

Students who self-identify as Indigenous at ULethbridge receive guidance, encouragement and support in the transition to university life and beyond.

Health Centre

Convenient access to quality health care on campus. Whether you are from the Lethbridge area or are moving to attend ULethbridge, you won’t need to worry about finding a doctor while on campus. The Health Centre provides services including illness or injury treatment and health exams as well as mental health supports. Our diverse team includes physicians, psychiatrists, nurses, behaviourists, dietitian and administrative staff.

International Centre

Scholarships and Student Finance

Whether it’s through awards, bursaries, funding consultations, advice on budgeting, scholarships or student loans, our office is open to support the financial side of your education.

Student Mentors

Student mentors are ULethbridge students who provide guidance and support to new students as they transition to university life.

Every new student is assigned a mentor who communicates via Mentor Mail and personal emails.

Tutoring and Learning Strategies

Whether you need a little help with a particular course or just want some tips and tricks to make studying more efficient, we provide peer-run group tutoring and learning strategies to help you make the grade.

Writing Centre

Provides practical writing support that supplements inclass instruction and helps you understand a wide variety of writing assignments. This is a free service for ULethbridge students.

Residence Life Welcome to your home away from home.

We believe residence is about more than accommodation: it’s about building community and sharing experiences — essential for a smooth transition to university.

Living in residence is a great option, especially during your first year.

While all students are welcome to apply, priority for on-campus housing is given to non-local students.

Our RAs are trained in emergency response, mental health first aid and standard first aid. They also uphold community standards, help with roommate disagreements and will connect you to services available at ULethbridge.

Studies show that students who live on campus are more likely to have a successful academic experience.

When you live on campus, your home is within a 10-minute walk away from your classes, computer labs, food services, gym facilities, the Library and study spaces.

Residents belong to the largest student club on campus, the Organization of Residence Students (ORS). To honour our relationships with local Indigenous communities, the early student housing developments are named after some of the signatories of Treaty 7 including Kainai, Piikani, Siksika and Tsuu T’ina.

Dining Plans Living away from home for the first time is an exciting journey; with a dining plan, your transition to university is supported by having convenient access to a variety of nutritious meals. The best part? You won’t have to do the dishes!

New University students living in residence must buy a Commuter or Standard dining plan (8-month contract).

Commuter (lite appetite) from $4,100 Standard (hearty appetite) from $4,750 Keep in mind that you can also add money to your plan at any point throughout the year.

Transfer or mature students don’t have to buy a dining plan, but if you’re not interested in doing the shopping, cooking and dishes, it’s an excellent choice!
