On behalf of the Senate, congratulations on this important life accomplishment. You have demonstrated adaptability, determination and resilience to be here today. Celebrate your success and enjoy this moment. Acknowledge and thank the people in your life who supported you along the way. As you reflect on your time on campus, recall the people and experiences that made your liberal education meaningful and special. Wherever you land in the future, always know you have a home at the University of Lethbridge.

Terry Whitehead (Ksikkihkini) (BA '94), Chancellor

We’ve been with you every step of the way — from your first school tour to your last assignment. We’ve seen you up at 7 a.m., stressing before a test, and we’ve helped you celebrate the end of a long day with a drink. Now you’re graduating, and the Coffee Company couldn’t be prouder to have accompanied you on this journey — as your cheering squad, your fueling station, the cup of comfort in your hand. Come back and visit often, and best of luck in your future endeavours! And, most importantly, never settle for crappy coffee.

JT and the staff at the Campus Coffee Company

I am honoured to offer my sincerest congratulations on the completion of your credential at the University of Lethbridge. You have shown flexibility, creativity, resilience and maturity in completing your academic journey. We are so proud of how well you have handled and navigated the challenges you have faced. Your bravery, perseverance and courage are a testament to the change-makers you will be as you move forward into the next phase of your life. I can’t think of a more capable and well-prepared cohort of leaders for the 21st century. We are honoured to call you alumni of the University of Lethbridge.

The Board of Governors congratulates you on this great achievement and welcomes you to the University of Lethbridge alumni family. The journey to graduation is a long climb to the summit so we encourage you to take a moment at the top to be proud of your success. The University has witnessed you scale up each slope with determination and persistence. We will now watch with interest as you look to the future and create your own path in the world using the knowledge and skills you have acquired. We are proud of you!

On behalf of the University of Lethbridge Students’ Union (ULSU), I am honoured to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the graduating Class of 2026. Today marks more than just the completion of your undergraduate academic journey, it represents years of perseverance, late nights, phenomenal work and memories that will stay with you long after you leave campus. This moment is a celebration of your resilience and growth, and a reminder that the challenges you’ve overcome have prepared you for whatever comes next. As you transition from students to alumni, I hope you carry forward the same curiosity, compassion and drive that brought you here. You are now part of a community that will always cheer you on, and we can’t wait to see how you make your mark on the world. Congratulations and welcome to your next lovely chapter of life!

On behalf of the University of Lethbridge Graduate Students’ Association (GSA), I — along with the incoming 2026/2027 council — extend our most sincere congratulations to you on reaching this pivotal moment. While your life will include a handful of keystone moments, few will hold quite the same significance as this one. While there may have been many amazing people who helped you make your way to this stage, YOU have made this happen. You showed up. You put in the hard work. You stumbled — and came back stronger. YOU did this. You made it. In lieu of this momentous occasion, I encourage you to reflect on the incredible contributions you’ve already made and consider what legacy you would like to create as you move forward. The GSA wishes you continued success in all that lies ahead. Once again, congratulations on your remarkable achievements!

Jade Oldfield (BEd ’18, MSc ’25), Graduate Students’ Association President

Dr. Richelle Marynowski (BEd ’94), Chief Marshal, Professor,

Convocation is a day of well-deserved celebration. For students, it signifies the completion of years of hard work and the beginning of an exciting new chapter in their lives. For families, it is a day to recognize those years of dedication and to enthusiastically embrace the pride that convocation evokes. For all of us, convocation is a time to look optimistically into the future, share in centuries-old academic traditions and, most importantly, celebrate our graduates.

For more than 50 years, University of Lethbridge graduates have been making significant contributions to Canada and the world. With convocation, the promise of our lasting impact continues. Congratulations to all at this very special time of year.

You, the University of Lethbridge’s newest alumni, have contributed so much to the intellectual and social vibrancy of the University during your educational journey here. You have also benefited from an enriching ULethbridge student experience developed and nurtured by many caring people across our two campuses. You have counted on us. Today, we salute you at graduation! Congratulations on achieving your goals and graduating! We are very proud of you and your accomplishments, and we wish you well. History of Convocation

In the Middle Ages, the church was responsible for higher education. Monasteries were the centres of learning and monks were the scholars of society. By the 12th Century, secular scholars began forming communities to pursue knowledge and truth, which eventually developed into independent universities in the prominent cathedral cities of Europe, precursors of today’s universities.

As universities grew, scholars wanted to honour students who successfully completed their education as well as welcome them into the select and exclusive group of scholars. The word convocation originally referred to gatherings of the clergy of Canterbury and York, but in 1577 Oxford University used it to describe the assembly of its graduates. Ever since, students around the world have been admitted to the order of scholars in a convocation ceremony.

Since its first convocation ceremony in 1968, the University of Lethbridge has been proud to recognize the academic achievements of our students, and honour individual achievements in various fields. A convocation ceremony represents a celebratory ‘rite of passage’ for our students — an opportunity to share academic accomplishments with their mentors, fellow graduates and loved ones.

The ceremony begins with the national anthem and reflection. Following that, the main features of convocation are a speech to the graduands by the president, a speech by the honorary degree recipient or guest speaker and the conferral of degrees, diplomas and certificates by the chancellor.

The Ceremonial Marks

The University of Lethbridge Shield

The University of Lethbridge shield reflects the spirit and identity of the institution. Designed in the University’s colours of blue and gold, the shield features a radiant gold sun on a blue background, symbolizing the bright skies and open landscape of southern Alberta. Beneath the shield, the University’s motto, Fiat Lux — Latin for “Let there be light” — appears on a gold and silver band, underscoring the University’s commitment to knowledge, discovery and illumination through education. Together, the colours, imagery and motto represent the University’s enduring dedication to fostering growth, innovation and opportunity for its students and community.

The University of Lethbridge Coat of Arms

The University of Lethbridge Coat of Arms was unveiled during the University’s 45th anniversary celebrations at Fall 2012 Convocation and features the blue shield and the University’s signature sun, along with our motto, Fiat Lux. This is supported by other components such as the eagle feather, Alberta wild roses, pronghorns and miner’s lamps, all signature elements of the University.

Fiat Lux, our motto, is Latin for ‘let there be light’ and refers metaphorically to the illumination that comes from research and learning. At the University, everyone has the ability to shine and we believe it’s our job to help make that happen.

The Mace, carried in the academic procession by the Chief Marshal, was created by artist Corne Martens

Academic Regalia

The academic dress of the University of Lethbridge is unique to the institution. A black gown and mortarboard are worn by undergraduate and master’s students; the credential earned is represented by colours on the borders and linings of the hoods. The bachelor’s degree, certificate and diploma hoods are black lined with blue, trimmed with a twisted gold and blue cord. Master’s hoods are black lined with blue and have an exterior border of light blue satin trimmed with a twisted gold and blue cord.

A coloured braid on the lining of the hood distinguishes the type of degree. Students receiving combined degrees wear two braids.

The colours representing the degrees are as follows:

• Arts: White

• Science: Golden yellow

• Arts and Science: White and golden yellow

• Education: Light blue

• Fine Arts: Brown

• Music: Pink

• Health Sciences: Red and golden yellow

• Nursing: Red

• Therapeutic Recreation: Green

• Management: Light brown

and given to the University in memory of former senator Virginia Mitchell. Dedicated at the fall convocation ceremony on

October 1, 1988, the mace is cast in bronze and represents the institution’s authority to grant degrees, diplomas and certificates. Unique to the University of Lethbridge, one end features three elements: mortarboard, gavel and open book, symbolizing academia, the Board of Governors and the General Faculties Council. The other end features a globe surrounded by pronghorns, representing our mascot and the universality of knowledge.

Doctor of Philosophy graduands wear a royal blue gown with blue velvet facings and chevrons outlined in bright gold piping, and a blue beefeater with a gold tassel. The hoods are royal blue, lined with sapphire blue satin and a bright gold chevron. The blue velvet trim is outlined in gold piping.

The stoles worn by the deans of each Faculty or School correspond generally with the colour of the braids on the lining of the undergraduate hoods of that Faculty or School. Convocation marshals wear royal blue stoles, and are selected from among the academic staff to supervise the academic procession and the presentation of graduands to the chancellor.

Cords of Distinction

Cords of academic distinction are worn by undergraduate students whose outstanding academic achievements merit the designation. Royal blue cords signify distinction and gold cords great distinction. Combined degrees students earning distinction or great distinction for both degrees wear two sets of cords.

Chancellor, President and Vice-Chancellor, and Board of Governors Chair Regalia

The regalia of the chancellor, president, board of governors’ chair and honorary degree recipients also feature blue and gold elements.

Taatsiikiipoyii (Talks in the Middle) Dr. Charles Weaselhead served as chancellor of the University of Lethbridge from 2018 to 2022. He was the first Indigenous chancellor at ULethbridge and also in Alberta. In recognition of Chancellor Emeritus Weaselhead’s service and ongoing dedication to education, community and building relationships, three stoles were introduced and incorporated as part of the chancellor, president and vicechancellor and board chair regalia at the Fall 2022 Convocation ceremony. The stoles were designed by a past alumna of the year, Jamie Medicine Crane (BEd ’05). Designed like a Blackfoot tipi with the cosmos on the top, animal beings in the centre and the earth beings at the bottom, it includes the mountains and puff balls, and the lines representing the water and sky.

Indigenous Stole

It is custom in many Indigenous communities to honour graduates with a special remembrance of their accomplishments as they continue on to various milestones in their lives. To celebrate their achievements, all graduating Indigenous students in attendance are gifted with a convocation stole.

Designed by Iikaisskini Indigenous Services, the stoles are royal blue with white embroidery, featuring four important symbols alongside the University of Lethbridge shield:

• The Buffalo acknowledges Blackfoot Territory and the importance of this animal to the Blackfoot people and to the great plains.

• The Eagle Feather represents our First Nations graduates.

• The Infinity Sign represents our Métis graduates.

• The Kuliq represents our Inuit graduates.

Podium Design

The convocation lecterns feature the university tartan alongside a Pendleton® blanket and eagle feather shield conceptualized by Blackfoot Elder Francis First Charger. A source of warmth and comfort, blankets serve a special role in Indigenous ceremonies. As gifts, blankets allow the recipient to forever wrap themselves in a treasured reminder of heritage, community and tradition.

Seven golden eagle feathers have been arranged in a circle to represent a shield. The number is significant and refers to the seven stars. The golden eagle is known for its majestic qualities, soaring high above and seeing far and wide with keen eyesight.

Chancellor Charles Weaselhead’s Headdress

We are honoured to receive a gifted headdress from Chancellor Emeritus Dr. Charles Weaselhead, Taatsiikiipoyii (Talks in the Middle), upon the completion of his term as the first Blackfoot Chancellor at the University of Lethbridge. This headdress is displayed in the Hall of Honour and is situated alongside the chancellor during convocation ceremonies.

University Tartan

The University of Lethbridge tartan was a 50th anniversary legacy project unveiled on Founders’ Day Weekend in January 2017. Designed by alumna Sarah Hilliard (BA ‘10), the tartan is inspired by convocation and the grand accomplishment it signifies. Faculty colours are incorporated in the tartan and the colours come together with the bright sunburst against the dark blue field. A frame of red honours the name given to University Hall, Iniskim (Sacred Buffalo Stone).

Co-operative Education

Co-operative Education is a nationally recognized form of work-integrated learning that combines professional experience with academic studies to enrich students’ academic, intellectual, personal and professional development. The program is a partnership between students, the University and employers, combining educational theory, its practical application and real-world employment experience. Students alternate academic terms of study with paid work terms in a professional workplace.

Inclusion Alberta

Inclusion Alberta has been partnering with postsecondary institutions across the province for more than 30 years to include students with developmental disabilities to participate in regular programs of study and campus life. Students audit programs of study to pursue individualized learning goals related to regular course content, complete modified course assignments and write modified exams to demonstrate what they have learned. Students receive a certificate of recognition to acknowledge their hard work, accomplishments and commitment to their learning at the completion of their program.

The Co-operative Education designation indicates at least one year of discipline-related employment experience. It shows employers that ULethbridge graduates are work ready. Graduates who have met the program requirements will receive the Co-operative Education designation on their

Faye HeavyShield

To gain an understanding of how Faye HeavyShield sees the world, one need only look to the art she creates, the mediums she utilizes and the complex themes she addresses. To get a better glimpse at the character and conviction with which she conducts her practice, look to the people she has influenced, the youth she has mentored and the emerging artists she has inspired.

A visual artist, cultural worker, mentor and teacher, HeavyShield has earned international acclaim for her artistic works that are

deeply connected to her Blackfoot culture. Committed to improving well-being and contributing to social development in the Blackfoot community and beyond, HeavyShield’s work is described as emphasizing relationality, rooted in the land, the Prairies and the foothills of southern Alberta, bonded to culture.

The impact of her work also goes well beyond Indigenous contemporary art. In 2021, HeavyShield was the recipient of the Art Gallery of Ontario’s Gershon Iskowitz Prize, presented to an artist who has made an outstanding contribution to the visual arts in Canada. In 2023, her exhibition Confluence was featured at the Pulitzer Arts Foundation in St. Louis, Missouri. This major exhibition spans work from the 1980s to the present day and includes two commissions responding to landscapes and histories of the greater St. Louis area. Similarly, her work is found in museums such as the National Gallery of Canada, the McMichael Museum, the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona, and more.

A highly sought-after commission artist, she is currently working on a monumental new work as part of the Glenbow Museum renovation in Calgary. The new installation will be a seminal feature of the museum when it reopens as the JR Shaw Centre for Arts & Culture in 2027.

HeavyShield is deeply invested in her community and leads social services and youth engagement initiatives on the Kainai Reserve and in Calgary, teaching her language, culture and values to children and youth to connect them to art practice and Blackfoot culture. Her support of youth artists continues to inspire a next generation of Blackfoot youth and has already spurred early career recognition for student artists.

HeavyShield’s commitment to critical thinking that connects the past, present and future within Blackfoot ways of knowing continues to advance knowledge in the artistic, cultural, education and heritage of the Blackfoot people, contributing indelibly to the social fabric of Nitsitapi.

Derek Redman

Author, athlete, advocate, educator, mediator, lawyer and judge, the Honourable Justice Derek Redman came to Lethbridge as a youngster and graduated from Winston Churchill High School. His exceptional abilities were evident early; he was both valedictorian and male athlete of the year. After high school, he played junior football and college basketball before attending Queen’s University Faculty of Law, where he also played rugby and helped secure the Ontario University AA Championship. His passion for sport has continued throughout his life, and he was recently named the BC Age-Group Sprint Triathlon Champion.

After articling in Calgary, Redman returned to Lethbridge and built a busy legal practice focused on litigation and mediation. Beyond his professional work, he and his wife Ashelyn (MEd ’02) were devoted parents to three sons, with Derek learning violin alongside them and coaching their sports teams. His commitment to community service has been equally significant. He served on numerous boards, including the Lethbridge and District Exhibition, was president of the Victorian Order of Nurses, and chaired the Board of Governors for Lethbridge College, as well as the University of Lethbridge Senate. His contributions have been recognized with the City of Lethbridge Citizen of the Year Award (2000), the Alberta Centennial Medal (2005), and the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal (2022).

A trained mediator, Redman taught conflict resolution to criminal justice students at Athabasca University, to senior administrators at the University of Lethbridge, and in Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Ukraine. He also delivered many community legal education courses and authored two books — one in serial form — aimed at young adults and business managers.

Redman was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2000 and, in 2007, became a Justice of what was then the Provincial Court of Alberta, now the Alberta Court of Justice. He was appointed Assistant Chief Justice for the southern region in 2017 and Chief Justice in 2020, serving in that role until late 2023. He continues to serve as a part-time justice.

Throughout his judicial career, Redman has been a champion of fairness, accessibility and innovation. He created the Integrated Services Court to support individuals facing addiction, mental illness, poverty or marginalization. He supported the University of Lethbridge’s Chess for Life program for youth on probation and oversaw the expansion of Drug Treatment Courts from two to seven.

His commitment to reconciliation led to the development of the first Indigenous Justice Strategy by a court in Canada, created in consultation with Indigenous leaders and service organizations. Under his leadership, three additional Indigenous Courts were opened, including one in Lethbridge.

Honorary Degree Recipients

Dean Gallimore

When Dean Gallimore (BMgt ’84) was appointed Chair of the University of Lethbridge Board of Governors in 2022, it marked a full-circle moment that embodied his longstanding commitment to the school that was the launching point for both professional and personal success. Tragically, his untimely passing in April 2025 prevented Gallimore from continuing to add to his already impressive legacy.

An alumnus of the Faculty of Management (now Dhillon School of Business), he was born in Edmonton and raised in Lethbridge, attending Winston Churchill High School before beginning a family legacy by attending ULethbridge. Both he

and his wife Bev (BA ’85, BMgt ’87) graduated from ULethbridge and their daughters, Lauren (BMgt ’15) and Amanda (BSc/BEd ’19), followed in their footsteps as alums.

Gallimore’s professional achievements were many and his financial acumen was only rivalled by his ability to cultivate positive relationships. He spent 28 years with local accounting firm KPMG, the final 12 years as the office managing partner before retiring in 2012.

Deeply respected by his peers, Gallimore received the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta Distinguished Service Award (2001) and was honoured as a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta (2008). In 2009, he was named to the University’s Alumni Honour Society.

Education was extremely important to Gallimore, and he was eager to give back to the University through volunteer work and as a philanthropist, crediting his time as a student as the starting point of his professional success. He first served as a member of the Board of Governors in 2019 and was appointed ULethbridge’s 11th Board Chair in 2022.

He made students a central focus during his time as Board Chair, advocating for student priorities and ensuring student representatives on the Board were heard. As Chair, he was involved in several major initiatives, including crucial work on the Budget Advisory Committee as the University continued to navigate its substantial budget challenges. With Gallimore as Board Chair, ULethbridge launched a major fundraising campaign — matched by the Board of Governors — to establish new endowed student scholarships. The Southern Alberta Medical Program (SAMP) was also realized, and in March 2025, Gallimore was excited to help launch the ULethbridge Strategic Plan.

In 2023, the family established the Gallimore Family Scholarship, an endowed scholarship in support of outstanding students pursuing undergraduate education in the management field. Upon his passing, and due to his personal passion and involvement in the establishment of SAMP and the outstanding care he received from the medical team at Foothills Hospital, the Dean Gallimore Memorial endowed scholarship was created to support students pursuing medical training at the University of Lethbridge.

Robert Dawe

With his considerable field experience, Robert (Bob) Dawe’s involvement in archaeological projects has made him a leading expert in ancient Alberta heritage, extending back to the earliest Indigenous occupations. While his research and public outreach have taken him all over the province in his role working for the Royal Alberta Museum, his varied contributions to the southern Alberta archaeological record are noteworthy.

This participation includes surveying and documenting rock art at Writing-On-Stone, ongoing monitoring of the St. Mary Dam,

working on the archaeological impact assessment of the mining heritage of the Crowsnest Pass, and more than four decades of involvement at Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump. His contributions include using photogrammetry to document rock art at WritingOn-Stone and retrieving a huge 1,600-year-old roasting pit from Head-Smashed-In for display. With his research and contribution to the development of the interpretive program at Head-Smashed-In, Dawe has built strong relationships with the interpretive centre staff, members of the Piikani and Kainai communities, and ranchers in the area. He supported the Blackfoot staff in their interpretation of archaeological materials and their engagement with the public, in a practice that has since become known as Indigenous Archaeology, where Indigenous voices are welcomed as part of the interpretive process, benefiting the entire community.

Dawe’s involvement at HeadSmashed-In Buffalo Jump has also had an important effect on the University of Lethbridge and its students. He has served as co-director of the current field school there, organized

by ULethbridge archaeology professors Drs. Shawn Bubel and Kevin McGeough. With his endless patience, many students come to see him as a mentor because he puts their education first.

In addition to spending time with students and visitors at Head-Smashed-In, Dawe regularly travels the province to give public presentations and participates in Stones and Bones, an event similar to an Antiques Road Show episode, where Albertans bring in an old object for Dawe to identify. His expertise extends to identifying toys in the Plains archaeological record, stone tools and projectile points.

Dawe’s knowledge of ancient technology has led to numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference papers. He has served as president of the Plains Anthropological Society, organizing two conferences for the society and contributing to its journal, Plains Anthropologist. His research approach is innovative and driven by his curiosity about how people lived in the past. His passion for archaeology knows no bounds, and Albertans are richer because of it.

Honorary Degree Recipients

Knud Petersen

If an event takes place in southern Alberta and Knud Petersen isn’t there — did it really even happen? Such is the reputation of the man known affectionately as “Knuddie,” who is arguably the most present person at anything and everything that’s going on in his community. Whether it be fundraising, volunteering or simply offering his infectious smile as support, Petersen is an influential driver of community spirit, philanthropy and well-being.

Petersen arrived in Canada in 1965 as a Danish agricultural exchange student. He quickly liked the vibe and eventually fell in love with the open plains of southern Alberta to make Canada his new home. Utilizing his desire to farm and

an enviable work ethic, he raised his family and worked the fields as a successful potato farmer partnering with the Perry family in the Chin area until his retirement in 1994. Petersen’s community interests then became his full-time passion and giving back to his adopted homeland his focus.

From sports to music and the arts, education, community advocacy, food security and the environment, Petersen is seemingly in the midst of everything — always looking to leave things in a better place than when he started.

Petersen’s support for postsecondary sport at both the University of Lethbridge and Lethbridge Polytechnic is legendary. He co-founded and then co-coached the Polytechnic’s Kodiaks women’s soccer program that went on to claim the CCAA national championship in 1994. He was a founding member of the Pronghorn Booster Club and Kodiaks Association and served as president of both organizations for several years. He’s coordinated and staffed casinos and worked multiple shifts as an organizer and driver for the Horns Operation Red Nose campaigns. He’s been recognized with the Pronghorn Athletics Gary Bowie Leadership Award, the ULethbridge Senate

Volunteer Award and inducted into the Pronghorns Hall of Fame.

In the broader community, Petersen helped launch the Southern Oldtimers Football Association, has served on the board of directors for the Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame, of which he’s been inducted, the Southern Alberta Council on Public Affairs and Lethbridge Sport Council. He also played a major role in the establishment of Environment Lethbridge and continues to support the Lethbridge Food Bank and other charitable organizations.

Petersen’s generosity and selflessness are exemplified by his funding of multiple endowments for student scholarships. Petersen shows no signs of slowing down and is a current Link Pathway board member and in recent years earned recognition with the Stars of Alberta Volunteer Award, the Canadian Mental Health Association Volunteer Award and a Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal.

Speaker Research Medal

Dr. Borries Demeler

Dr. Borries Demeler is regarded as a world leader in the field of hydrodynamics, excelling as a distinguished professor, researcher and mentor whose contributions to biophysics, analytical ultracentrifugation (AUC) and computational biology are unparalleled. That he found his calling and became an international expert in such a highly specialized discipline only after he could not find enough work as a carpenter is similarly remarkable.

Born and raised in Germany, Demeler first came to North America as a teen, visiting an exchange student from Toronto he’d met earlier. Determined to get back to Canada, he began building staircases and sailboats to fund his

eventual return. While he did get back to Canada, he ended up living in Butte, Montana but could not find enough work as a carpenter. His focus turned to school and with the help of his father, he attended the University of Montana where he studied chemistry, physics and mathematics.

To say that Demeler excelled is an understatement and before long, he narrowed his focus on biophysics and AUC. During graduate school at Oregon State University, Demeler tackled the challenge of digitizing an aging AUC instrument so that it could be read by a computer. What ensued was the development of UltraScan, a revolutionary software package that has become the worldwide standard of data analysis for hydrodynamic data from AUC experiments.

First released in 1990, UltraScan established Demeler as an emerging innovator whose expertise would revolutionize research in biochemistry and biophysics performed with AUC.

As his research group grew, the funding and partnerships followed and in 2018 he earned a prestigious Canada 150 Research Chair appointment at the University of Lethbridge. His was one of only three Canada 150 Chairs in Western Canada.

His work at ULethbridge began by establishing the Canadian Center for Hydrodynamics. Since joining the University, he has published more than 70 research articles, trained and mentored countless researchers and collaborated with research programs and industry partners throughout the world. His cross-disciplinary work continues to engage the pharmaceutical industry, health and virus research and biotech companies. Demeler’s success at securing external funding has exceeded $6.5 million, of which more than $5 million has been earned at ULethbridge.

Keenly focused on his students, Demeler champions the idea of mentoring at all levels, helping train students from high school to PhD levels. He actively supports giving opportunities to underrepresented and minority populations and has worked extensively with Blackfoot students on both sides of the Canada/U.S. border.

Demeler was named the 2018 Fulbright Specialist Scholar, the 2023 Erskine Visiting Professor Award from New Zealand’s University of Canterbury and the 2019 Svedberg Prize lifetime achievement award by the AUC community.

Excellence in Teaching Award

Rebekah Eckert

Rebekah Eckert’s teaching philosophy has developed through a diverse range of work experiences with people from all walks of life. She has worked with inner-city children, women in conflict with the law, both in and outside of jail, refugees and immigrants learning English, church youth groups, women in recovery from abuse and people dealing with illness and grief.

As a result, she recognizes students as fellow human beings with their own hopes and desires and sees relating to each other as

companions on the journey as the primary task. Eckert works to know who her students are and that they know what they bring to the course is valued.

In teaching her students about academic writing, Eckert takes a flexible approach and introduces them to a range of tools used by good writers from which students can choose. Beyond the tools, students also learn to create their own voice as writers.

Eckert uses explicit instruction in her teaching, structuring the course so all students can succeed. Many students come to the class assuming they are poor writers, but Eckert works to overcome barriers — whether structural or personal — and believes that any student can improve.

She gives students plenty of exercises and opportunities to practice through in-class writing assignments, reading quizzes, Moodle quizzes and handwritten pieces. This allows students to gain confidence as they apply what they are learning in small, incremental ways.

With the advent of Large Language Models (LLMs) and artificial intelligence (AI), the temptation is ever-present to outsource thinking and let AI produce the needed academic paper. Eckert stresses to her students that creativity and critical thinking are essential human skills that are the foundation of academic writing and will always be in demand. Eckert has found that students generally aren’t able to evaluate the work of an LLM, and using AI robs them of the opportunity to build their cognitive abilities.

Eckert recognizes that many of her students are at a stage of life where they are creating their future. They are often emerging into adulthood, or they may be caught in oppression, be that the effects of colonialism, extractive capitalism or internal family systems. Assignments in Eckert’s class help students consider what their future might look like.

Graduate Mentorship Award

Dr. Suzanne Lenon

Dr. Suzanne Lenon, a Professor of Sociology and Women & Gender Studies and Centre for Feminist Research Affiliate, has supervised seven graduate students from diverse disciplines, served on 22 graduate supervisory committees, and supervised numerous applied and independent studies students. These experiences have given her keen insight into the needs of graduate students. Her mentorship style is based on trust, respect and dialogue. She communicates her high expectations, especially for intellectual rigour, at the beginning of their program. Lenon meets with her students regularly to help them develop their thesis projects, provides them with detailed

feedback, and supports them in scholarship and grant applications. She works to create opportunities and connections for her students, advising on conferences and workshops to attend, professional development activities, research projects and abstract writing. Lenon also fosters camaraderie among her students by hosting a monthly Grad Group Gathering.

She supports students where they are at, allowing her to provide individualized guidance through considerate collaboration and consultation. She’s direct and clear in her critiques, giving wise and caring counsel in a way that allows students to arrive at decisions that are right for them.

Lenon began her post-secondary education in Women’s Studies and Development Studies at the University of Calgary. After earning an undergraduate degree, she completed a master’s in Development Studies at Carleton University and a doctorate in Sociology and Equity Studies at OISE/University of Toronto. She took several years off between degrees to work with non-profit organizations in anti-poverty/ economic justice research, public education for a women’s addiction centre and public education and

crisis counselling at a sexual assault centre. These experiences were foundational for Lenon, cementing her commitment to the study of law, race, gender and sexuality. She joined ULethbridge as an Assistant Professor in the Women & Gender Studies program in 2008.

The indirect path she took to her PhD informs her approach to graduate supervision. Lenon values the unique relationships she has with her students, encouraging them to become as theoretically sophisticated as they are able, regardless of their career stage or discipline.

Students deeply respect Lenon and express their gratitude for her mentorship and contributions to their success. Her clarity, dedication and rigorous analysis help them become independent thinkers and professionals with high standards.

Lenon’s colleagues also respect her skills as a mentor. They recognize how she inspires and encourages students to broaden their thinking and critically engage with materials, questions, theories and lived experiences.

Shawn & Erin Pinder

As the owners of Runners Soul, Erin (BSc ’01) and Shawn (BSc ’98, MSc ’01) Pinder promote a healthy, active lifestyle for people of all ages in Lethbridge and across southern Alberta. Through their walking and running clinics and clubs, they have created a strong and vibrant community. They also sponsor and volunteer at numerous running events.

Apart from Runners Soul, Shawn served on the University Senate for two terms, served a term as president of the Alberta Sport

Development Centre South West and is the president of the Prairie Runners Race Association. Erin served a term as president of the Independent Running Retailers of Canada and has been a volunteer coach for the Lethbridge Track & Field team and the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute Cross Country team.

While attending ULethbridge, the Pinders were student-athletes on the Pronghorn swim team. This experience motivated them to participate in the Adopt-A-Horn

program that helps students cover costs associated with their sport. In 2012, Shawn and Erin received the Knud Petersen Spirit in Sport Award for their involvement in running. The Pinder family also volunteers at the Lethbridge and District Humane Society.

They are dedicated athletes themselves. Shawn started running when he began competing in triathlons in 2000. Since then, he’s competed in numerous running events and triathlons. Erin is also a longtime runner and triathlete. She joined the Runners Soul Marathon Club in 1998 and was recruited by the then-owner, Ron Bain, to join the staff at Runners Soul. In 2007, when Bain presented them with the opportunity to take over Runners Soul, they didn’t hesitate to take him up on the offer. In the years since, they have become deeply embedded in the community and exemplify the spirit and soul of runners and volunteerism.
