Terry Whitehead (Ksikkihkini) (BA ‘94), Chancellor

We’ve been with you every step of the way – from your first school tour to your last assignment. We’ve seen you up at 7 a.m., stressing before a test, and we’ve helped you celebrate the end of a long day with a drink. Now you’re graduating, and the Coffee Company couldn’t be more proud to have accompanied you on this journey – as your cheering squad, your fueling station, the cup of comfort in your hand. Come back and visit often, and best of luck in your future endeavors! And, most importantly, never settle for crappy coffee.

JT and the staff at the Campus Coffee Company

On behalf of the University of Lethbridge Graduate Students’ Association (GSA), I—along with the incoming 2025/2026 council—extend our heartfelt congratulations to you on reaching this significant milestone. Pursuing graduate studies is no small feat, and today is a celebration of your determination and hard work. Your efforts have left a mark, and as you cross the stage, I encourage you to reflect on the incredible contributions you’ve made to the ULethbridge community throughout your academic journey. The GSA wishes you continued success in all that lies ahead. Once again, congratulations on your remarkable achievements!

Jade Oldfield (BEd ‘22), Graduate Students’ Association President

The Board of Governors congratulates you on this great achievement and welcomes you to the University of Lethbridge alumni family. The journey to graduation is a long climb to the summit so we encourage you to take a moment at the top to be proud of your success. The University has witnessed you scale up each slope with determination and persistence. We will now watch with interest as you look to the future and create your own path in the world using the knowledge and skills you have acquired. We are proud of you!

University of Lethbridge Board of Governors

On behalf of the University of Lethbridge Students’ Union (ULSU), I am honoured to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the graduating class of 2025. Today marks more than just the completion of your undergraduate academic journey, it represents years of perseverance, late nights, breakthroughs, and memories that will stay with you long after you leave campus. This moment is a celebration of your resilience and growth, and a reminder that the challenges you’ve overcome have prepared you for whatever comes next. As you transition from students to alumni, I hope you carry forward the same curiosity, compassion, and drive that brought you here. You are now part of a community that will always cheer you on and we can’t wait to see how you make your mark on the world. Congratulations and welcome to your next lovely chapter of life!

You, the University of Lethbridge’s newest alumni, have contributed so much to the intellectual and social vibrancy of the University during your educational journey here. You have also benefitted from an enriching ULethbridge student experience developed and nurtured by many caring people across our two campuses. When we welcomed you at New Student Orientation, we committed to standing with you throughout your studies and research, providing support to you to help you achieve your goals. You have counted on us. Today, we salute you at graduation! Congratulations on achieving your goals and graduating! We are very proud of you and your accomplishments, and we wish you well. Thank you for having chosen the University of Lethbridge as your educational home. Please stay in touch.

Kathleen Massey, Vice Provost (Students)

Convocation is a day of well-deserved celebration. For students, it signifies the completion of years of hard work and the beginning of an exciting new chapter in their lives. For families, it is a day to recognize those years of dedication and to enthusiastically embrace the pride that convocation evokes. For all of us, convocation is a time to look optimistically into the future, share in centuries-old academic traditions and, most importantly, celebrate our graduates.

For more than 50 years, University of Lethbridge graduates have been making significant contributions to Canada and the world. With convocation, the promise of our lasting impact continues. Congratulations to all at this very special time of year.

I am honoured to offer my sincerest congratulations on the completion of your credential at the University of Lethbridge. It is particularly poignant because you have done so under a unique set of circumstances – during and after a global pandemic. You have shown flexibility, creativity, resilience, and maturity in completing your academic journey. We are so proud of how well you have handled and navigated the many challenging situations of the past few years, and in spite of all, have still succeeded. Your bravery, perseverance and courage are a testament to the change-makers you will be as you move forward into the next phase of your life. I can’t think of a more capable and well-prepared cohort of leaders for the 21st Century. We are honoured to call you alumni of the University of Lethbridge.

Dr. Richelle Marynowski (BEd ’94), Chief Marshal, Professor, Faculty of Education

On behalf of Iikaisskini Indigenous Services, we wish to extend our congratulations to the newest alumni of the University of Lethbridge! Whether we were regularly connected or as silent supporters in your corner, we recognize the sacrifices you have made and adversity you have overcome. May your journey of lifelong learning propel you to great, new, wonderful heights of achievement in the years ahead. The world is a great place to explore so trust that you can achieve anything you set your mind to! You have proven resilient with determination and perseverance. We wish you luck and congratulate you on behalf of all of us at Iikaisskini.

Lindi Shade (Piiinikki) (BA ’06), Jodie Flamand-Tailfeathers (Ikkinaipommowa) (BA ’14), Royal Adkin (Iksisstowaapi Kanakkaatsi) (BMgt ’18), Santanita Oka (Siipoimoststa) (BHSc ’16) & Chataya Holy Singer (Niitsiitaakii) (BFA – Indigenous Art ’23), Iikaisskini Indigenous Services

history of convocation

In the Middle Ages, the church was responsible for higher education. Monasteries were the centres of learning and monks were the scholars of society. By the 12th century, secular scholars began forming communities to pursue knowledge and truth, which eventually developed into independent universities in the prominent cathedral cities of Europe, precursors of today’s universities.

As universities grew, scholars wanted to honour students who successfully completed their education as well as welcome them into the select and exclusive group of scholars. The word convocation originally referred

to gatherings of the clergy of Canterbury and York, but in 1577 Oxford University used it to describe the assembly of its graduates. Ever since, students around the world have been admitted to the order of scholars in a convocation ceremony.

Since its first convocation ceremony in 1968, the University of Lethbridge has been proud to recognize the academic achievements of our students, and honour individual achievements in various fields. A convocation ceremony represents a celebratory ‘rite of passage’ for our students — an opportunity to share academic accomplishments with their mentors, fellow graduates and loved ones.

The ceremony begins with the national anthem and reflection. Following that the main features of convocation are a speech to the graduands by the president, a speech by the honorary degree recipient or guest speaker, and the conferral of degrees, diplomas and certificates by the chancellor.

THE UNIVERSITY SYMBOLS

The University’s colours are blue and gold, drawing inspiration from the blue sky and bright sun so prominent on the southern Alberta landscape. The University Shield brings focus to the fiery sun with twisted Aztec rays.

The University of Lethbridge Coat of Arms was unveiled during the University’s 45th anniversary celebrations at Fall 2012 Convocation and features the blue shield and the University’s signature sun, along with our motto, Fiat Lux. This is supported by other components such as the eagle feather, Alberta wild roses, pronghorns and miner’s lamps; all signature elements of the University.

Fiat Lux, our motto, is Latin for ‘let there be light’ and refers metaphorically to the illumination that comes from research and learning. At the University, everyone has the ability to shine and we believe it’s our job to help make that happen.

The mace, carried in the academic procession by the Chief Marshal, was created by artist Corne Martens and given to the University in memory of former senator Virginia Mitchell. Dedicated at the fall convocation ceremony on October 1, 1988, the mace is cast in bronze and represents the institution’s authority to grant degrees, diplomas and certificates. Unique to the University of Lethbridge, one end features three elements: mortarboard, gavel and open book, symbolizing academia, the Board of Governors and the General Faculties Council. The other end features a globe surrounded by pronghorns, representing our mascot and the universality of knowledge.

ACADEMIC REGALIA

The academic dress of the University of Lethbridge is unique to the institution. A black gown and mortarboard are worn by undergraduate and master’s students; the credential earned is represented by colours on the borders and linings of the hoods. The bachelor’s degree, certificate and diploma hoods are black lined with blue, trimmed with a twisted gold and blue cord. Master’s hoods are black lined with blue and have an exterior border of light blue satin trimmed with a twisted gold and blue cord.

A coloured braid on the lining of the hood distinguishes the type of degree. Students receiving combined degrees wear two braids.

The colours representing the degrees are as follows:

Arts: White

Science: Golden yellow

Arts and Science: White and golden yellow

Education: Light blue

Fine Arts: Brown

Music: Pink

Health Sciences: Red and golden yellow

Nursing: Red

Therapeutic Recreation: Green

Management: Light brown

Doctor of Philosophy graduands wear a royal blue gown with blue velvet facings and chevrons outlined in bright gold piping, and a blue beefeater with a gold tassel. The hoods are royal blue, lined with sapphire blue satin and a bright gold chevron. The blue velvet trim is outlined in gold piping.

The stoles worn by the deans of each Faculty or School correspond generally with the colour of the braids on the lining of the undergraduate hoods of that Faculty or School. Convocation marshals wear royal blue stoles, and are selected from among the academic staff to supervise the academic procession and the presentation of graduands to the chancellor.

CORDS OF DISTINCTION

Cords of academic distinction are worn by undergraduate students whose outstanding academic achievements merit the designation. Royal blue cords signify distinction and gold cords great distinction. Combined degrees students earning distinction or great distinction for both degrees wear two sets of cords.

CHANCELLOR, PRESIDENT AND

AND BOARD OF GOVERNORS CHAIR REGALIA

The regalia of the chancellor, president, board of governors’ chair, and honorary degree recipients also feature blue and gold elements.

Taatsiikiipoyii (Talks in the Middle) Charles Weaselhead served as chancellor of the University of Lethbridge from 2018 to 2022. He was the first Indigenous chancellor at ULethbridge and also in Alberta. In recognition of Chancellor Emeritus Weaselhead’s service and ongoing dedication to education, community and building relationships, three stoles were introduced and incorporated as part of the chancellor, president and vicechancellor, and board chair regalia at the Fall 2022 Convocation ceremony. The stoles were designed by a past alumna of the year, Jamie Medicine Crane (BEd ’05). Designed like a Blackfoot tipi with the cosmos on the top, animal beings in the centre and the earth beings at the bottom, it includes the mountains and puff balls, and the lines representing the water and sky.

INDIGENOUS STOLE

It is custom in many Indigenous communities to honour graduates with a special remembrance of their accomplishments as they continue on to various milestones in their lives. To celebrate their achievements, all graduating Indigenous students in attendance are gifted with a convocation stole.

Designed by Iikaisskini Indigenous Services, the stoles are royal blue with white embroidery, featuring four important symbols alongside the University of Lethbridge shield:

The Buffalo acknowledges Blackfoot Territory and the importance of this animal to the Blackfoot people and to the great plains.

The Eagle Feather represents our First Nations graduates.

The Infinity Sign represents our Métis graduates.

The Kuliq represents our Inuit graduates.

PODIUM DESIGN

The convocation lecterns feature the university tartan alongside a Pendleton® blanket and eagle feather shield conceptualized by Blackfoot Elder Dr. Francis First Charger LL.D. h.c. Ninnaisipistoo (Owl Chief). A source of warmth and comfort, blankets serve a special role in Indigenous ceremonies. As gifts, blankets allow the recipient to forever wrap themselves in a treasured reminder of heritage, community and tradition.

Seven golden eagle feathers have been arranged in a circle to represent a shield. The number is significant and refers to the seven stars. The golden eagle is known for its majestic qualities, soaring high above and seeing far and wide with keen eyesight.

CO-OPERATIVE EDUCATION

Co-operative Education is a nationally recognized form of workintegrated learning that combines professional experience with academic studies to enrich students’ academic, intellectual, personal and professional development. The program is a partnership between students, the University and employers, combining educational theory, its practical application and real-world employment experience. Students alternate academic terms of study with paid work terms in a professional workplace.

CHANCELLOR CHARLES WEASELHEAD’S HEADDRESS

We are honoured to receive a gifted headdress from Chancellor Charles Weaselhead, Taatsiikiipoyii (Talks in the Middle), upon the completion of his term as the first Blackfoot Chancellor at the University of Lethbridge. This headdress is displayed in the Hall of Honour and is situated alongside the chancellor during Convocation ceremonies.

UNIVERSITY TARTAN

The University of Lethbridge tartan was a 50th anniversary legacy project unveiled on Founders’ Day Weekend in January 2017. The tartan design is inspired by convocation and the grand accomplishment it signifies. Faculty colours are incorporated in the tartan and the colours come together with the bright sunburst against the dark blue field. A frame of red honours the name given to University Hall, Iniskim (Sacred Buffalo Stone).

The Co-operative Education designation indicates at least one year of discipline-related employment experience. It shows employers that ULethbridge graduates are work ready. Graduates who have met the program requirements will receive the Co-operative Education designation on their parchments and display the badge above on their mortarboards.

INCLUSION ALBERTA

Inclusion Alberta has been partnering with post-secondary institutions across the province for more than 30 years to include students with developmental disabilities to participate in regular programs of study and campus life. Students audit programs of study to pursue individualized learning goals related to regular course content, complete modified course assignments and write modified exams to demonstrate what they have learned. Students receive a certificate of recognition to acknowledge their hard work, accomplishments and commitment to their learning at the completion of their program.

TO OUR STUDENTS, we make a promise:

A promise to do our best, so they can be their best.

A promise to foster exploration, to share ideas and information, to teach but also to learn.

A promise to build the buildings, acquire the technology, cultivate the partnerships, and welcome the people essential to advancing an environment that excites and ignites learning.

A promise to create an environment where professors and students are colleagues and everyone grows together, an environment that recognizes the power of every student’s dream. And helps that dream come true.

DAVID A. ROBERTSON

DOCTOR OF LAWS, honoris causa

David A. Robertson has never been fearful of heavy subjects. An Indigenous author, podcaster, public speaker and social advocate, Robertson often confronts difficult issues in his writing with an inherent honesty and openness that resonates with readers of all ages.

A member of Norway House Cree Nation, he currently lives and works out of Winnipeg. Robertson writes primarily for children and youth, opening minds to the strength of the written word and empowering new voices to be heard. Embracing Indigenous identity and culture, he presents important topics that contribute to understanding, healing, truth and reconciliation.

Robertson first garnered attention in 2012 with his seminal four-part graphic novel series, 7 Generations: A Plains Cree Saga, an epic story that follows one Indigenous family over three centuries and seven generations. The works soon found their way into schools and libraries across the country, gaining appreciation from teachers and librarians alike as they inspired young readers and sparked meaningful conversations.

Extremely respectful of his audience, he never wavers from presenting the hardest truths while encouraging deeper levels of understanding. Robertson believes sincerely that children must always have access to books, even those that cover difficult and uncomfortable topics. Using a scaffolding approach, he presents age-appropriate content that builds understanding as readers mature.

His thoughtful and caring approach to broaching delicate subject matter has not only made his writing a favourite of young readers, but it has also garnered the respect of educators and parents. When one of his books was banned by a misguided school division for containing “too much culture and ceremony,” the ensuing uproar from parents, teachers and fellow writers

soon saw the book returned to library shelves.

The honours and recognition for Robertson’s work are substantial. He’s a two-time winner of the Governor General’s Literary Award — in 2017 for When We Were Alone and in 2021 for On the Trapline — and was nominated for a third in 2020 with The Barren Grounds. In 2017, he earned the Beatrice Mosionier Aboriginal Writer of the Year Award, and in 2018, the first book of Robertson’s Reckoner series won the McNally Robinson Best Book for Young People Award, the Manitoba Book Awards’ Michael Van Rooy Award for Genre Fiction, and the Indigenous Writer of the Year Award at the High Plains Book Awards. In 2021, he won the Writers’ Union of Canada Freedom to Read Award and in 2023, was recognized with an Honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of Manitoba for outstanding contributions to the arts.

His continued commitment to creating space for emerging Indigenous voices has earned him an appointment as editorial director of a new children’s imprint, Swift Water Books, dedicated to publishing Indigenous writers and illustrators, further advancing understanding and reconciliation.

CHARLES WEASELHEAD TAATSIIKIIPOYII (TALKS IN THE MIDDLE)

DOCTOR OF LAWS, honoris causa

When Taatsiikiipoyii (Talks in the Middle) Charles Weaselhead was named the University of Lethbridge’s 14th Chancellor on March 15, 2019, it marked the first time in the institution’s then 52-year history that an Indigenous person had been appointed to the Chancellor position. A significant moment that continued to advance the University’s path towards truth and reconciliation, Weaselhead’s tenure invoked lasting change and played an instrumental role in securing one of the largest contributions in institutional history.

Weaselhead was born on the Blood Indian Reserve and spent his formative years in the residential school system. He survived the

experience, falling back on youth sports as an escape from the conditions into which he was thrust. He also recognized at a young age the value in education, a theme he would champion as he became older.

Having grown up confronted by the challenges facing his community, he sought solutions and became interested in invoking change. In the early 1980s, Weaselhead turned his focus to health issues, advancing initiatives designed to improve health outcomes for Indigenous Peoples. He took on important administrative roles as director of treatment centres Napi Lodge and Poundmaker’s Lodge, director of the Blood Indian Hospital and chief executive officer for the Blood Tribe Department of Health.

In 2004, Weaselhead was elected Chief of the Blood Tribe, a post he would hold for 12 years. During his tenure, he was appointed Treaty 7 Grand Chief and held the Health and Education portfolio for the Treaty 7 Chiefs. At the heart of advocating for his community was a belief in fostering relationships that would support his goals to better the lives of his people. He was a signatory to the Alberta Protocol Agreement on Government-toGovernment Relations (2008) and

the Memorandum of Understanding on First Nations Education (2010).

One of Weaselhead’s greatest strengths is his collaborative approach that galvanizes community participation and support. By exploring new and innovative partnerships, all while protecting and advancing the sovereignty of First Nations, he is able to tackle dire issues of housing, poverty, community violence and other social and health concerns.

Weaselhead’s appointment as ULethbridge Chancellor afforded the opportunity to build bridges between cultures and create even more pathways for Indigenous youth to access post-secondary education. Taught by his grandfather to walk in both cultures to better understand perspectives, Weaselhead enacted positive change by incorporating traditional Indigenous ceremonial aspects and protocols to University events, and integrating Indigenous perspectives into all aspects of ULethbridge life. He was also at the forefront of helping secure the $15 million MasterCard Foundation contribution to ULethbridge aimed at dismantling education barriers and supporting employment opportunities for Blackfoot youth.

KIRK MUSPRATT

DOCTOR OF LETTERS, honoris causa

An internationally renowned conductor and music director, Maestro Kirk Muspratt came from humble beginnings. Music was part of his life from an early age; he had his first piano lesson with Mrs. Madeline Pinkney after his first day of school. He credits her with shaping what was to follow in his life. He was six years old when he participated in music festivals in the Crowsnest Pass and eight when he entered festivals in Lethbridge. Muspratt joined the Crowsnest Pass Symphony Orchestra at age 11. After high school, he was accepted at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City. He went on to study at Temple University in Philadelphia and the

Vienna Conservatory. Muspratt had a summer apprenticeship with Leonard Bernstein at Tanglewood, the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s summer academy for advanced music study.

In his professional life as a music director and conductor with the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra, New Philharmonic and the Dupage Opera Theater, Muspratt focuses on bringing classical music to the masses without the stuffiness with which it’s typically associated. He’s especially keen on thinking of ways to introduce younger people to the genre and following up with opportunities to expand their interest and encourage ongoing involvement. Muspratt developed a Just Ask Kirk program so audience members could ask him questions. The Cookies with Kirk and Interactive Intermission initiatives allow patrons and musicians to meet, and the Kirkature cartoon supports his belief that symphonic music can have broad appeal.

Another popular program he developed is the Solo Competition for Children, which results in a different child being chosen to

perform at a Northwest Indiana Symphony concert. High school students get the chance to perform with New Philharmonic musicians through the Side by Side concerts. Muspratt implemented an Orchestral Fellowship Program with Indiana’s Valparaiso University, and his vision helped found the South Shore Music Festival.

His career has included serving as assistant conductor at the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, music director of the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra, associate conductor at the Utah Symphony Orchestra, resident conductor at the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and music director of the Alberta Ballet.

Muspratt has earned many accolades for his work and has been a guest conductor with orchestras around the world. He possesses boundless enthusiasm and passion for music.

He remains proud of his southern Alberta roots. Muspratt owns the house where he was born and spends as much time in the community as his schedule allows, adjudicating festivals in Lethbridge and Crowsnest Pass and mentoring young performing artists.

BRENT BUTT

DOCTOR OF LAWS,

For Brent Butt, there really was no other career path than comedy, something he’d decided before his teenage years. While he briefly attended Ontario’s Sheridan College after graduating high school in his hometown of Tisdale, Saskatchewan, formal schooling quickly took a back seat to his entrepreneurial tendencies. Leaving school, he and a friend developed their own publishing company, and they created two issues of their comic book, Existing Earth, in which Butt drew the illustrations.

He approached comedy not on a whim, but rather as a vocation, studying the intricacies of the craft. By the time he took the stage for

honoris causa

his first stand-up performance at the age of 21, he was ready and his meteoric rise in the comedy industry was testament to his work ethic and preparation. A year after his first appearance on an amateur night at a Saskatoon comedy club, Butt was touring Central and Eastern Canada. Before long he was headlining Toronto’s downtown Yuk Yuks Comedy Club and doors began to open for him internationally.

Once established as a live entertainer, Butt began realizing the next phase of his career, and in 2004 created, wrote and starred in the hit television show Corner Gas. Set in the fictional town of Dog River, Saskatchewan, the show reflected Butt’s smalltown upbringing and shone a new light on rural Canada, one that resonated with small communities across the country and struck a chord with populations in larger urban centres.

Corner Gas ran for six seasons, averaging a remarkable 1.2 million viewers per episode and reaping numerous awards, including four Canadian Comedy Awards and five Gemini Awards. The show has now aired in 60 countries and continues to run on streaming

platforms, boasting large fan bases in Germany, the United States, Australia and beyond. A Canadian Armed Forces soldier once wrote the show about his unit watching episodes of Corner Gas to take the edge off during particularly dangerous deployments, reminding them of home and that laughter and simpler times still existed.

The success of Corner Gas garnered remarkable attention and in 2008, Butt was awarded the Peter Ustinov Award for outstanding body of comedic work at the Banff World Media Festival. He joined the likes of past recipients John Cleese, Bob Newhart, John Candy and Eugene Levy.

With a platform as a leader in the industry, Butt has used his profile to call attention to the work of other comedians and to mentor and promote the growth and health of the comedy community.

Eager to continue to expand his creative knowledge, Butt is an active screenwriter and now author, having released his first novel, Huge, a #1 national best seller and one of Indigo’s 2023 Best Books of the Year.

SPEAKER

DR. ROBERT MCDONALD

Professor Dr. Robert McDonald is a world-renowned neuroscientist whose research has fundamentally reshaped our understanding of learning and memory. Since joining the University of Lethbridge in 2004, he has developed a program of research that advances scientific theory and contributes directly to clinical applications in neurodegenerative diseases, mental health and cognitive disorders.

McDonald’s early work provided groundbreaking evidence that memory is not a unitary process but consists of multiple interacting systems. His seminal 1993 paper on triple dissociations in memory systems continues to be widely cited and has served as a cornerstone for subsequent research in behavioural neuroscience. By designing experiments that isolated specific

memory processes and mapped them to neural circuits, McDonald helped establish a systems-based framework for understanding cognition. This approach, once considered outside the mainstream, has now become a central paradigm in the field.

Through more than three decades of continuous research funding — including prestigious grants from NSERC, CIHR and the Alzheimer Society of Canada — McDonald has led a highly productive lab investigating the biological foundations of memory, the effects of neurodevelopmental stressors, and novel models of Alzheimer’s disease. His recent work includes translational research on the sporadic form of Alzheimer’s, exploring how circadian disruption, the gut microbiome and early cannabinoid exposure affect cognitive health.

McDonald’s program is defined by its significant scientific impact and integrative, collaborative nature. His lab has worked alongside experts in biochemistry, imaging, genetics and computational neuroscience to test innovative hypotheses. He has co-authored more than 150 publications — several in high-impact journals — and has been invited to present at international conferences and contribute to leading academic journals. His influence also extends

to clinical and public health circles, where his work has shaped thinking on Alzheimer’s, aging and psychiatric disorders.

Equity, diversity and inclusion are at the heart of McDonald’s research and mentoring philosophy. Over his career, he has trained nearly 200 students, many from underrepresented groups, and has created an inclusive lab environment with flexible supports tailored to individual needs. Numerous trainees have gone on to successful careers in academia, medicine and industry, including at institutions such as McGill University, the University of Calgary and Washington University in St. Louis.

McDonald is also an exceptional teacher and campus citizen. He regularly teaches foundational courses in behavioural neuroscience and has served on departmental and national committees, including CIHR and NSERC grant panels. VOLUNTEER AWARD

LADAN YOUSEF

An outstanding and hardworking student, Ladan Yousef has demonstrated how much she cares for her community by contributing more than 300 volunteer hours while pursuing a Bachelor of Health Sciences in Public Health and working full time.

Based in Calgary, Yousef, a licensed practical nurse, has volunteered with BeTheChangeYYC for three years, starting as a street outreach volunteer and rising to a paid team lead position. She and her team provided necessities like food, water and hygiene supplies, as well as harm reduction, wound care, referrals and emergency medical responses such as overdoses, to

Calgary’s unhoused population. She continues to freely give her time to organizing fundraisers, creating educational materials and attending meetings. Yousef has also served as the medical team lead at a biannual event called the Pop-Up Care Village. This one-day event provides basic services like health care, clothing, haircuts, food and case management. In addition, she volunteers with other community groups such as the Salvation Army, the Centre for Newcomers, the ULethbridge public health student club and Diabetes Canada during their children’s summer camp.

These volunteer efforts make her an exemplar and allow her to give back while using her knowledge and skills to make a difference in people’s lives. She advocates for those who don’t have a voice to help create awareness and health equity. Ultimately, her goal is to dismantle structural and systemic barriers so marginalized groups can access the care they need.

Above and beyond her volunteer work, Yousef is employed full-time and attends school at night. Being part of a visible minority group, Yousef sees pursuing a post-

secondary education as a privilege and is grateful for the opportunity, knowing her parents risked their lives for the rights and freedom she now enjoys.

For her final practicum placement, Yousef was with ARCHES, a not-forprofit organization in Lethbridge that works to reduce the harm associated with HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C and other chronic health conditions. As part of her practicum, Yousef organized a harm reduction booth as part of a film screening project looking at the impacts of drug poisoning on the Blackfoot Reserve.

Through all these experiences, Yousef has demonstrated a mature attitude in her studies, always seeking to learn more and expand her horizons. During the course of her studies, she’s also become increasingly interested in conducting research. She has shown dedication in reaching her career goals and plans to complete a master’s degree in public health and ultimately pursue a career in medicine.

DR. AARON TAYLOR

Taking a nuanced approach to student growth and resiliency, Department of Drama Professor Dr. Aaron Taylor deeply understands the challenges faced by students and the need to support them beyond classroom learning. Through interdisciplinary collaboration and critically rigorous pedagogy, Taylor is ensuring students are prepared to excel in post-secondary environments and in their later careers from the moment they step foot on campus.

Taylor is a cinema and media studies scholar who focuses on screen acting, cognitive film theory and transmedia relations between film and comics. Since joining the University of Lethbridge in 2007, Taylor has built a reputable

pedagogy that distinguishes him as a standout professor and mentor. He received a Teaching Fellowship in 2017 and was recognized as a Tier 2 Board of Governors Research Chair in 2019, his teaching methods focused on creating an environment of critical conversation, openness and dialogue.

Lauded by students and peers for his dynamic and engaging teaching style, Taylor strives to facilitate learning through open environments and conversations where students feel comfortable sharing ideas and making thoughtful and well-reasoned judgments in their work. Taylor meticulously designs his courses to encourage collaboration and move students from routine memorization to truly understanding and transforming what they learn.

With a long history of making significant and meaningful contributions to the culture of teaching excellence, Taylor’s ability to appeal to a diverse range of students creates safe, positive and enjoyable learning experiences for many.

Taylor often serves as students’ first instructor in post-secondary education, frequently teaching large introductory courses. Through this role, he has gained insight into the challenges new students face

and has identified a need to build resilience and executive function skills. In a post-secondary setting, resilience refers to the ability to adapt to and overcome academic and social setbacks.

Recognizing a lack of essential skills like time management, selfconfidence and communication in new and first-year university students, Taylor aims to systematically cultivate resilience in first-year students to help them succeed and flourish. Inspired by the StartSmart program at ULethbridge, which identifies opportunities for growth and institutional assistance in first-year students, Taylor hopes to support students’ growth in demanding learning environments.

Taylor proposes to explore multiple strategies during his Board of Governors Teaching Chair project — from creating an interdisciplinary working group to identifying core executive function skills to integrate into foundational courses, to developing a post-secondary transition program that builds upon and synthesizes existing transitional programs at ULethbridge, such as the Indigenous Student Success Certificate, the Early Start Experience, StartSmart and the Global Citizenship Cohort.

GRADUATE MENTORSHIP AWARD

DR. STACEY WETMORE

Dr. Stacey Wetmore has mentored 24 master’s and 13 doctoral students. Her students have coauthored over 125 publications and delivered more than 325 presentations at local, national and international conferences. Under her guidance, her graduate students have won 41 conference awards and attracted more than $2.8 million in scholarships. They have gone on to secure positions in industry research, postdoctoral fellowships, and as university instructors and faculty members.

When they join her lab, Wetmore introduces graduate students to the field of computational chemistry using interactive workshops and

manuals developed in her lab. From there, she works to ensure their success by giving them carefully crafted projects aligned with their interests, with distinct learning objectives for large projects broken down into manageable pieces. Using these approaches, her students gain project management skills, learn to think critically, and hone their scientific and grant-writing skills. They also learn to develop hypotheses, run calculations, analyze data, keep accurate records and write reports. Wetmore meets with trainees both individually and in a group setting and hosts a journal club to critique recent articles. Trainees receive extensive feedback on oral and written works and learn how to deliver effective presentations. Senior graduate students get further training in cluster administration and software installation.

At any given time, Wetmore will be mentoring undergraduate students, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. This mixed composition gives graduate students the chance to be mentors, to be mentored and expand their research portfolio. Wetmore encourages them to attend research, teaching and time management workshops by the School of Graduate Studies,

the Teaching Centre, research institutes on campus, and at other universities. These experiences allow students to learn from other experts in the field and to form collaborations between ULethbridge and other research universities. Her students are also motivated to volunteer with organizations like the Graduate Students’ Association, Let’s Talk Science and the student groups Wetmore established after the pandemic to enhance the graduate student experience.

Her lab is an inclusive space. Wetmore recruits diverse team members from her classes and outreach activities and provides flexible schedules to accommodate students’ commitments. She also includes her students in initiatives like Operation Minerva, a program that gives Grade 8 and 9 students from underrepresented groups the chance to shadow science mentors for a day.

Under Wetmore’s guidance and mentorship, graduate students are well-positioned to help solve important challenges facing Canada and the rest of the world.
