Creation of the Graduate Student Medicine Wheel The Graduate Student Medicine Wheel was created through a deeply collaborative and culturally rooted journey, inspired

by Indigenous teachings that emphasize balance and growth throughout life. Honouring Anishinaabe, Cree and Blackfoot traditions, the process involved meaningful engagement with

Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and sacred sites to ensure the wheel reflects and supports the diverse experiences of graduate students.

“I found so many professors at ULethbridge who clearly love teaching. You go to them and say that you don’t understand a section, and they’ll talk to you about it for an hour. If I ever needed extra help, there was always someone to go to. Professors, master’s students, doctorate students and post-docs who can help you out and share ideas. Whenever I needed somebody, there were almost too many people I had to pick from.”

Christopher Beaton (BSc ’25) is a master’s student in neuroscience. He conducts research on using ultradian rhythms as early behavioural detection of Alzheimer’s disease. He represented ULethbridge at the Three Minute Thesis western regionals in 2026.

Favourite animal around campus: The marmot.

“I saw a marmot and I was like, what the heck is that thing? That’s the biggest rat I’ve ever seen in my life!”

Favourite place to eat or drink on campus: The Zoo. “It’s such a great place to hang out.

There are always people there. I’ll go there with one friend group and then another friend group will come in and we will hang.”

What left a lasting impression on me was the welcoming atmosphere I experienced over just three days — among both faculty and students. Another major draw was the Alberta RNA Research and Training Institute (ARRTI). Even then, it was evident to many in the field that RNA research would play a central role in the future of biomedical science.”

Where Research Meets Reality

Resilience through sport Pursuing research that he truly cared about brought Chase Petruska to ULethbridge. In Dr. Gerlinde Metz’s lab at the Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience (CCBN), his work led to the creation of a powerchair soccer program for people with physical disabilities.

Chase’s research was inspired by his close bond with his brother, who has cerebral palsy. His findings showed that individuals with physical disabilities often face higher risks of stress, social isolation and reduced physical activity, particularly when supported by non-family caregivers.

“When I came to Lethbridge and saw no specific activity for people in powerchairs, I thought it would be a good idea to look at a powerchair soccer intervention and research the impact it had on their resilience and mental health. We are very grateful the University makes research possible and enables the powerchair soccer program. It helps community members in dire need of an intervention and social support.”

Michelle Sylvestre (BFA - Art ‘17, MFA ’21) is a PhD candidate in Cultural, Social, and Political Thought and the first University of Lethbridge recipient of the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholarship. Her research uses an Indigenous lens to examine who is included in AI data and how knowledge is shared.

Favourite campus place to eat or drink: Campus Coffee Co. and Market Coffee Favourite thing to do around Lethbridge: Visit exhibitions, check out galleries like SAAG, Casa and Trianon, and then make art myself.
