            history of convocation
In the Middle Ages, the church was responsible for higher education. Monasteries were the centres of learning and monks were the scholars of society. By the 12th century, secular scholars began forming communities to pursue knowledge and truth, which eventually developed into independent universities in the prominent cathedral cities of Europe, precursors of today’s universities.
As universities grew, scholars wanted to honour students who successfully completed their education as well as welcome them into the select and exclusive group of scholars. The word convocation originally referred
to gatherings of the clergy of Canterbury and York, but in 1577 Oxford University used it to describe the assembly of its graduates. Ever since, students around the world have been admitted to the order of scholars in a convocation ceremony.
Since its first convocation ceremony in 1968, the University of Lethbridge has been proud to recognize the academic achievements of our students, and honour individual achievements in various fields. A convocation ceremony represents a celebratory ‘rite of passage’ for our students — an opportunity to share academic accomplishments with their mentors, fellow graduates and loved ones.
The ceremony begins with the national anthem and reflection. Following that the main features of convocation are a speech to the graduands by the president, a speech by the honorary degree recipient or guest speaker, and the conferral of degrees, diplomas and certificates by the chancellor.
          THE UNIVERSITY SYMBOLS
The University’s colours are blue and gold, drawing inspiration from the blue sky and bright sun so prominent on the southern Alberta landscape. The University Shield brings focus to the fiery sun with twisted Aztec rays.
The University of Lethbridge Coat of Arms was unveiled during the University’s 45th anniversary celebrations at Fall 2012 Convocation and features the blue shield and the University’s signature sun, along with our motto, Fiat Lux. This is supported by other components such as the eagle feather, Alberta wild rose, pronghorn and miner’s lamp; all signature elements of the University.

Fiat Lux, our motto, is Latin for ‘let there be light’ and refers metaphorically to the illumination that comes from research and learning. At the University, everyone has the ability to shine and we believe it’s our job to help make that happen.
The mace, carried in the academic procession by the chief marshal, was created by artist Corne Martens and given to the University in memory of former senator Virginia Mitchell. Dedicated at the fall convocation ceremony on October 1, 1988, the mace is cast in bronze and represents the institution’s authority to grant degrees, diplomas and certificates. Unique to the University of Lethbridge, one end features three elements: mortarboard, gavel and open book, symbolizing academia, the Board of Governors and the General Faculties Council. The other end features a globe surrounded by pronghorns, representing our mascot and the universality of knowledge.

            ACADEMIC REGALIA
The academic dress of the University of Lethbridge is unique to the institution. A black gown and mortarboard are worn by undergraduate and master’s students; the credential earned is represented by colours on the borders and linings of the hoods. The bachelor’s degree, certificate and diploma hoods are black lined with blue, trimmed with a twisted gold and blue cord. Master’s hoods are black lined with blue and have an exterior border of light blue satin trimmed with a twisted gold and blue cord.
A coloured braid on the lining of the hood distinguishes the type of degree. Students receiving combined degrees wear two braids. The colours representing the degrees are as follows:
          Arts: White
          Science: Golden yellow
Arts and Science: White and golden yellow

    Education: Light blue
          Fine Arts: Brown
          Music: Pink
Health Sciences: Red and golden yellow
          Nursing: Red
          Therapeutic Recreation: Green
          Management: Light brown
Doctor of philosophy graduands wear a royal blue gown with blue velvet facings and chevrons outlined in bright gold piping, and a blue beefeater with a gold tassel. The hoods are royal blue, lined with sapphire blue satin and a bright gold chevron. The blue velvet trim is outlined in gold piping.
The stoles worn by the deans of each Faculty or School correspond generally with the colour of the braids on the lining of the undergraduate hoods of that Faculty or School. Convocation marshals wear royal blue stoles, and are selected from among the academic staff to supervise the academic procession and the presentation of graduands to the chancellor.
          CORDS OF DISTINCTION
Cords of academic distinction are worn by undergraduate students whose outstanding academic achievements merit the designation. Royal blue cords signify distinction and gold cords great distinction. Combined degrees students earning distinction or great distinction for both degrees wear two sets of cords.
CHANCELLOR, PRESIDENT AND VICE-CHANCELLOR AND BOARD OF GOVERNORS CHAIR REGAILIA
The regalia of the chancellor, president, board of governors’ chair, and honorary degree recipients also feature blue and gold elements.
Taatsiikiipoyii (Talks in the Middle) Charles Weaselhead served as chancellor of the University of Lethbridge from 2018 to 2022. He was the first Indigenous chancellor at ULethbridge and also in Alberta. In recognition of Chancellor Emeritus Weaselhead’s service and ongoing dedication to education, community and building relationships, three stoles were introduced and incorporated as part of the chancellor, president and vicechancellor, and board chair regalia at the Fall 2022 Convocation ceremony. The stoles were designed by a past Alumna of the Year, Jamie Medicine Crane (BEd ’05). Designed like a Blackfoot tipi with the cosmos on the top, animal beings in the centre and the earth beings at the bottom, it includes the mountains and puff balls, and the lines representing the water and sky. The chancellor’s stole contains Chancellor Emeritus Weaselhead’s Blackfoot name.
          INDIGENOUS STOLE
It is custom in many Indigenous communities to honour graduates with a special remembrance of their accomplishments as they continue on to various milestones in their lives. To celebrate their achievements, all graduating Indigenous students in attendance are gifted with a convocation stole.
Designed by Iikaisskini Indigenous Services, the stoles are royal blue with white embroidery, featuring four important symbols alongside the University of Lethbridge shield:
The Buffalo acknowledges Blackfoot Territory and the importance of this animal to the Blackfoot people and to the great plains.
The Eagle Feather represents our First Nations graduates.
The Infinity Sign represents our Métis graduates.
The Kuliq represents our Inuit graduates.
          5
        PODIUM DESIGN
The convocation lecterns feature the university tartan alongside a Pendleton® blanket and eagle feather shield conceptualized by Blackfoot Elder Francis First Charger. A source of warmth and comfort, blankets serve a special role in Indigenous ceremonies. As gifts, blankets allow the recipient to forever wrap themselves in a treasured reminder of heritage, community and tradition.
Seven golden eagle feathers have been arranged in a circle to represent a shield. The number is significant and refers to the seven stars. The golden eagle is known for its majestic qualities, soaring high above and seeing far and wide with keen eyesight.

    CHANCELLOR CHARLES WEASELHEAD’S HEADDRESS
Dr. Michael Mahon, Iipisowaahsiiyi (Morning Star), has served as ULethbridge’s sixth president and vice-chancellor from 2010 to 2023. He was honoured to receive a gifted headdress from Chancellor Charles Weaselhead’s, Taatsiikiipoyii (Talks in the Middle), appointment as Treaty 7 Grand Chief. This headdress will be displayed in the Hall of Honour and will be situated alongside the chancellor during Convocation ceremonies.
          UNIVERSITY TARTAN

The University of Lethbridge tartan was a 50th anniversary legacy project unveiled on Founders’ Day Weekend in January 2017. The tartan design is inspired by convocation and the grand accomplishment it signifies. Faculty colours are incorporated in the tartan and the colours come together with the bright sunburst against the dark blue field. A frame of red honours the name given to University Hall, Iniskim (Sacred Buffalo Stone).

    CO-OPERATIVE EDUCATION
Co-operative Education is a nationally recognized form of workintegrated learning that combines professional experience with academic studies to enrich students’ academic, intellectual, personal and professional development. The program is a partnership between students, the University and employers, combining educational theory, its practical application and real-world employment experience. Students alternate academic terms of study with paid work terms in a professional workplace.
The Co-operative Education designation indicates at least one year of discipline-related employment experience. It shows employers that ULethbridge graduates are work ready. Graduates who have met the program requirements will receive the Co-operative Education designation on their parchments and display the badge above on their mortarboards.

    INCLUSION ALBERTA
Inclusion Alberta has been partnering with post-secondary institutions across the province for more than 30 years to include students with developmental disabilities to participate in regular programs of study and campus life. Students audit programs of study to pursue individualized learning goals related to regular course content, complete modified course assignments and write modified exams to demonstrate what they have learned. Students receive a certificate of recognition to acknowledge their hard work, accomplishments and commitment to their learning at the completion of their program.

A promise to build the buildings, acquire the technology, cultivate the partnerships, and welcome the people essential to advancing an environment that excites and ignites learning.

A promise to create an environment where professors and students are colleagues and everyone grows together, an environment that recognizes the power of every student’s dream. And helps that dream come true.

            Installation of Chancellor Terry Whitehead
Early in his ULethbridge academic career, new interests and perspectives were sparked in one of his liberal arts elective courses and the linear vision he once had of his educational future suddenly broadened. English classes, political science, theatre, economics, among others, ignited his curiosity in everything the University had to offer.
the Arts Club Theatre Company in Vancouver, where he now resides. In 2013, he co-founded Alexander Whitehead Executive Search.
Raised in Lethbridge, Terry Whitehead’s route to the University of Lethbridge was as he expected. He graduated from Lethbridge Collegiate Institute, enrolled in business studies at Lethbridge College and played two seasons with the Kodiaks men’s basketball team. He earned a business diploma and then turned his eyes across the river, intent on leveraging his transfer credits as he pursued a management degree at ULethbridge. That’s when he discovered the importance of liberal education, and everything changed, setting him on a path of discovery he’s still walking today.
Whitehead immersed himself in the campus experience, acting in fine arts dramatic productions and attending Pronghorns games. He was active on Students’ Union council, serving as SU president in 1990-1991, and wrote for The Meliorist campus newspaper. In 1994, Whitehead graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English and although he would leave campus to pursue a highly successful professional career, his ties to ULethbridge would only strengthen over time.
His first job out of school was an administrator for New West Theatre, the largest not-for-profit professional theatre company in southern Alberta. In fact, New West would be a harbinger for many of Whitehead’s future roles, alternating between for-profit and not-for-profit ventures. He later joined Theatre Calgary and
A proud alumnus, Whitehead has long been one of the University’s greatest advocates and his support is tangible in the ways he has affected the lives of students through the many awards and prizes he has created over the years, including the Bridge Prize (Canada’s only national short story writing contest for post-secondary students), the Play Right Prize (annual student one-act playwriting competition), HistoriCity (annual student historical essay competition), the Pronghorn Citizenship Award, and most recently, the Spirit Prize (annual award recognizing excellence in visual arts by an Indigenous student).
He has served on the ULethbridge Board of Governors and is one of four alumni co-chairs championing the drive for student scholarships currently underway across campus.
In March 2023, Terry Whitehead was named the University of Lethbridge’s 15th chancellor.

terms, until 1993, consistently earning the respect and votes of his constituents.

near Lundbreck to replace several southern Alberta community landfills was achieved.
Born and raised in the Crowsnest Pass, Fred Bradley grew up in one of the most scenic and historic alpine landscapes in Canada. The lessons of working in his family’s general store included understanding the value of diversity and the fickle nature of prosperity in a boom-andbust economy linked to natural resource extraction.
Bradley left home to attend the University of Alberta, then returned to assist managing the family business. A central member of the community, he ran for provincial office in 1975 and at age 25 was the youngest MLA elected during that term of the Peter Lougheed government. He served for five
As Minister of Environment, Bradley developed and implemented policy for the management of Alberta’s air, land and water resources. His input into the Alberta Coal Policy, Eastern Slopes Policy, siting of the Old Man River Dam and the protection of Kananaskis Country stand as testimony to his impactful legislative career. The South West Alberta Renewable Energy Initiative was a result of his advocacy, and he served as Chair of the Alberta Research Council, the Special Places 2000 initiative and an Alberta Election Act Review.
His advocacy on behalf of his home riding included realizing the amalgamation of five communities to form the Municipality of the Crowsnest Pass. His work played a key role in the removal and reclamation of over 600,000 tons of coal slag, the building of York Creek Lodge, two local hospitals, the Allison Creek Brood Trout Station and the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre. As well, the development of Alberta’s first regional landfill
After leaving politics, Bradley continued in public service, and from 1995 to 2013 he served as a parliamentary development advisor in Ukraine, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan. His efforts to preserve and recognize Alberta’s history are reflected in his work as Chair of the Alberta Historical Resources Foundation. He continues to advocate for the recognition and preservation of the unique history of the Crowsnest Pass, playing a key role in the designation of Frank Slide, Leitch Collieries and Lille as Provincial Historic Sites, and Coleman as a National Historic Site, the restoration of the Alberta Provincial Police Barracks and the development of the Hillcrest Mine Disaster Memorial.
He recently served as a member of the Alberta Coal Policy Review Committee and is currently on the board of several community heritage organizations and Community Futures Crowsnest Pass.

TIMOTHY CAULFIELD DOCTOR OF SCIENCE, honoris causa
of Alberta, Caulfield’s research spans disciplinary boundaries such as stem cells, research ethics, the representation of science in the general media, and public health policy. He has authored over 350 academic publications.
Science misinformation, while always prevalent in society, has taken on new momentum since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Amplified through social media, misinformation and misrepresentations of science have endangered the public and shone a bright light on scientific discovery and communication.

Professor Timothy Allen Caulfield is one of a rare breed of scientist who is equally as adept as an accomplished researcher as he is interpreting his work to engage and inform the public. A Canada Research Chair in Public Health Law Policy and Research Director of the Health Law Institute at the University
Caulfield has also made a concerted effort to reach the public through his work and lead the conversation about public health policy. His outreach efforts have included two national bestselling books that address health misinformation: The Cure for Everything: Untangling the Twisted Messages about Health, Fitness and Happiness and Is Gwyneth Paltrow Wrong About Everything?: When Celebrity Culture and Science Clash. He also hosted and coproduced the popular television program A User’s Guide to Cheating Death, which has been shown in over 60 countries and streamed on Netflix.
Caulfield’s voice has been particularly relevant in the wake of the global pandemic and his expertise has been featured extensively on significant national media platforms discussing issues behind vaccine hesitancy and

communicating the science behind the COVID-19 virus. He has taken the lead on two significant initiatives as a result, serving as Chair for the Royal Society of Canada task force on evidence-informed perspectives on major societal challenges in response to and recovery from COVID-19, as well as taking a leadership role in Science Up First, a national collective of scientists, researchers, health-care experts and science communicators who share the best available science in creative ways to stem the spread of misinformation.
Caulfield’s books and articles have greatly helped to blunt the damage of false claims and fallacies and was ranked No. 6 on Maclean’s Magazine’s 2023 Power List of Top 10 Health Care Innovators. As well, he is a Member of the Order of Canada and a Fellow of both the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. He also earned the Distinguished Academic Award from the Confederation of Alberta Faculty Associations and the Fleming Medal for Excellence in Science Communication.

ESTHER TAILFEATHERS DOCTOR OF SCIENCE, honoris causa
Esther Tailfeathers knew she wanted to pursue a career in medicine after an experience at the Cardston Hospital when she worked as a candy striper. A friend had arrived alone at the hospital ready to give birth and Tailfeathers stayed with her friend as the baby was born. The experience cemented her desire to become a doctor, but the path to becoming a family physician wasn’t easy. A high school guidance counsellor tried to steer her toward teaching or nursing. She came to the University of Lethbridge where she completed a bachelor’s in what was then known as Native American Studies.
Tailfeathers married and moved to Norway where she lived amongst the Sami people. Her life changed dramatically when her younger brother, who was a third-year medical student at the University of Alberta, died in a vehicle collision. Tailfeathers had spoken to him the week before and he encouraged her to go into medicine. She returned to southern Alberta for his funeral and took his words to heart. After earning a medical degree at the University of North Dakota, she completed her family medicine residency at the University of Alberta.
Tailfeathers moved back to her home community in 2000 and works as a family physician in Standoff and Cardston, as well as providing on-call and emergency services at the Cardston Hospital. She serves as the Indigenous Medical Lead with Alberta Health Services’ Indigenous Wellness Core. Previously, Tailfeathers also provided 24-hour medical service for one week per month in Fort Chipewyan.

K-12 teaching career, he completed his Master of Education in Learning Disabilities in 2002. He later earned a PhD in Cognitive Studies from Queen’s University.
An exceptionally well-respected educator consistently recognized for his instruction, Dr. Chris Mattatall continues to seek ways to improve his own practice, while enhancing knowledge around making education more accessible for all types of learners.
An associate professor in the Faculty of Education, Mattatall has dedicated himself to educational psychology and inclusion, with a keen interest in the study of teaching and learning. Mattatall earned a Bachelor of Arts from Kingswood University and Bachelor of Education from the University of New Brunswick. After beginning his
Since starting at the University of Lethbridge in 2015, Mattatall has made a significant difference in many areas of the Faculty of Education. Within the classroom, he excels as a clear communicator with a gentle and affirmative style. He is willing to draw from his life experience to bring a sense of relevance and approachability to the subject matter of his lessons and his students are widely receptive to his instruction. He has twice been nominated for the University of Lethbridge Excellence in Teaching Award and consistently receives very positive feedback from students in course evaluation comments.

His ability to connect with students spans all program levels, and he is respected for going the extra mile to ensure a positive student learning environment and experience. He describes his research focus as being centred on helping struggling learners through good teaching, believing all students have the ability to learn.
As Board of Governors Teaching Chair, he proposes to work closely with the Teaching Centre and Accommodated Learning Centre, as well as other groups on campus, to continue to make equity, diversity and inclusion a reality in classrooms for students who struggle academically and behaviourally. As developmental, cognitive and mental health issues continue to grow, Mattatall seeks to learn more about what instructors think, fear, want and worry about as it relates to teaching all students and particularly those who may struggle academically.
Administratively, Mattatall has worked as Assistant Dean of Student Program Services, where he significantly elevated the approachability of the office, leading to an increase in applications and greater connection to pre-Education students. Under his leadership as Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and Research, he was able to help solidify curriculum, realize a record number of applications, consolidate cohorts and preside over the graduation of the Faculty’s first doctoral students.

and while earning her doctorate at the University of Toronto.
At the heart of her teaching philosophy is a deep-seated desire to make complex curriculum material accessible, interesting and relevant to students’ everyday lives and future professional practices. With a drive to create innovative and engaging content in her courses, she strives to empower students with the tools they need to find success.
Dr. Devon Smither is a risk-taker in the classroom, and she encourages her students to be as well.
Associate dean and an associate professor of art history and museum studies in the University’s Faculty of Fine Arts, Smither has made a point of developing her craft of teaching, integrating diverse and critical perspectives in her courses and encouraging students to grow and excel in their studies.

Completing her undergraduate degree at the University of Alberta, Smither pursued her passion for art history during her master’s work at the University of British Columbia
A nationally significant voice on best practices in teaching, Smither and a group of art historians created Open Art Histories (OAH) in 2019, a platform to support teaching excellence in the arts in Canada. Smither co-wrote the first Open Education Resource (OER) on Canadian and Indigenous art, CanadARThistories: Reimagining the Canadian Art Survey, broadening the history of art in Canada in relation to emerging conversations on decolonization, equity and inclusion and internationalization.
Always open to new concepts, Smither consistently seeks new ways to better her pedagogy. This past year, she implemented contract grading in her courses.
A labour-based practice grounded in social justice, it emphasises a compassionate approach to equitable and fair grading and assesses students purely on the work they put into the class. Evaluations on the quality of assignments are separated from the calculation of the course grade, allowing students to be creative, try new concepts, make mistakes and learn from the process, rather than worry about grades in relation to the quality of their work. Smither has seen real success with this model, prompting many students to feel less anxiety in their studies and inspiring them to focus on learning in the classroom.
Smither works to provide opportunities for students to extend their learning outside of the classroom and develop relationships within their communities and beyond. Her mentorship and engagement with students are directly related to her passion for understanding art history and museum studies through a contemporary lens, one that is focused on the social, cultural and political impacts of art and curatorial practices.
