International Management

“The Malaysian Work Study Program was very beneficial to my education and work experience. Not only did I get hands-on work experience in an international setting, I had the opportunity to be exposed to the Malaysian culture as well as practice my cross-cultural management skills.” Don Nguyen BMgt 2007

“I learned so much not only about other countries but about myself. It was an excellent educational adventure.” Dani Dwinnell BEd 2007, BMgt 2007

Do other countries, cultures and languages intrigue you? Have you always wanted to travel – perhaps even live and work abroad? Looking forward to great internship prospects and an amazing career? If you are a skilful communicator, enjoy learning about global management issues and want to hone diverse skills so you can work abroad or at home with cultural ease, International Management may be the perfect career path for you. As an International Management major, you will: • Learn about cross-cultural management practices and how work behaviour differs throughout the world • Study international aspects of business, trade, marketing, finance and economic systems • Develop fluency in a second language • Gain cross-cultural experience • Hone the skills needed to meet the challenges of doing business internationally • Build a network of personal contacts across the globe Students choose International Management because of the breadth of training, their strong interest in global management issues, and their desire to experience the world while gaining valuable management training.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES FOR INTERNATIONAL MANAGEMENT GRADS International Management majors go on to work in a variety of work environments both domestically and internationally. Graduates work in the private sector, government, post-secondary institutions and as entrepreneurs. U of L has graduates working in the diplomatic corps, in government, as lawyers, as professors, in college and university international offices, in international development agencies, in the oil and gas sector and as small business owners. WHAT YOU’LL STUDY In addition to your required BMgt core courses, you’ll complete ‘Introduction to International Management’ and four electives, choosing from a wide range of courses. You’ll go on at least one semester-long international exchange, completing at least four courses while studying abroad. We have 23 destinations in 17 countries: Argentina, Belgium, China, Chile, Ecuador, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, The Netherlands, Poland, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, Turkey and Uruguay. Many students take full advantage of the opportunity to explore new cultures by choosing more than one exchange program. You’ll complete a four-course language minor. Most students choose French, German, Japanese or Spanish; however, in special circumstances, it is possible to pursue another language. (Check with Student Program Services as early in your program as possible.) Most students complete three language courses at U of L and the fourth during their study-abroad term.
