General Management

“A General Management major gave me the opportunity to pursue a broad-based education by taking courses in Finance, Marketing and Human Resources. In addition to these skill sets, I was also able to specialize in subject matter that will be widely applicable to my own career path. To supplement my academic courses, I have had the chance to put theory into practice at management conferences, in student government and clubs, and by volunteering for non-profit organizations and fundraisers. Steve Brodrick BMgt 2009 General Management major

Do you have a wide range of skills and interests? A strong entrepreneurial drive? A desire to custom-tailor your program? General Management opens up so many opportunities, describing a single career path or one optimum set of skills is next to impossible. Many students choose the General Management major because it provides a comprehensive understanding of management that can take them anywhere. Others choose it because of the opportunity to design their own programs. Some plan to start their own businesses. If you’re a budding entrepreneur, a broad-based understanding of business will position you to succeed. Whether you’re primarily a ’people person’ or a ‘numbers person’, a General Management major will help you further develop and refine what already comes naturally. Management has traditionally been about planning, organizing and leading. It still is, but it has also become much more than that. Management means working through others to accomplish goals. Today’s managers are peopleoriented, creative, adaptable – strong communicators who deal effectively with rapidly changing environments, work successfully with small and large teams, live and work by principles of ethics and social responsibility, and are aware of our responsibility to the environment.

“The manager is the dynamic, life-giving element in every business…. In a competitive economy, above all, the quality and performance of managers determine the success of a business, indeed they determine its survival.” Peter Drucker The Practice of Management
