INTRODUCTIE · INTRODUCTION Van verwerping naar erkenning Handicap is lang een voorwerp van minachting, angst, afwijzing of zelfs fascinatie geweest. Het heeft ook tot reflectie door wetenschappers en filosofen op de menselijke conditie en het leven in de samenleving geleid.

De moeilijkheden die de handicap met zich meebrengt, worden gemeten aan de hand van een norm. Deze norm definieert de meest gebruikelijke manier van functioneren in een samenleving en wat deze van haar leden verwacht.

Veel culturen hebben handicap gezien als de manifestatie van occulte of demonische machten, een straf of beproeving opgelegd door de goden. Anderen hebben personen met een handicap buitengewone vaardigheden toegeschreven om ontoegankelijke waarheden te begrijpen.

Een meer recent perspectief beschouwt de handicap als het gevolg van gezondheidsproblemen. Deskundigen identificeren de beperkingen van een persoon en behandelen hem of haar. In tegenstelling tot dit medische begrip, stelt een sociaal model voor dat de beperkingen niet uniek zijn voor de persoon met een handicap, maar dat deze het gevolg zijn van omgevingsfactoren die verhinderen dat de persoon volledig aan de samenleving deelneemt.

Dus, het concept ‘handicap’ wordt nu beschouwd als het resultaat van de interactie tussen de kenmerken van een persoon en de samenleving waarin zij leven.

Du rejet à la reconnaissance Le handicap a longtemps été un objet de mépris, de crainte, de rejet ou même de fascination. Il a cependant progressivement conduit scientifiques et philosophes à une réflexion sur la condition humaine et la vie en société.

De nombreuses cultures ont vu le handicap comme la manifestation de puissances occultes ou démoniaques, un châtiment ou une épreuve imposés par les dieux. D’autres ont attribué aux personnes touchées par le handicap des aptitudes exceptionnelles à percevoir et comprendre des vérités inaccessibles.

Une perspective plus récente envisage les handicaps comme la conséquence de problèmes de santé. À l’inverse de cette 2

compréhension médicale du handicap dans laquelle des experts identifient les déficiences et les limitations d’une personne et agissent pour les améliorer, un modèle social considère que le handicap n’est pas le propre de la personne handicapée mais qu’il est la résultante de conditions d’environnement qui l’empêchent de participer pleinement à la société. En effet, les difficultés qu’il engendre se mesurent forcément par rapport à une norme, laquelle définit les situations et les manières de fonctionner les plus répandues dans une société et ce qu’elle attend de ses membres.

Ainsi, on admet de mieux en mieux aujourd’hui que la complexité du concept de handicap et sa prise en charge résultent de l’interaction entre les caractéristiques d’une personne et celles de la société où elle vit.

Cette perspective conduit à la recherche d’une expérience humaine partagée qui reconnait les différences individuelles, et ouvre enfin à la question de l’expression artistique des frontières de la normalité.

The difficulties of disabled individuals are necessarily measured against a norm that defines the most prevalent situations and ways of functioning in a society and what this society expects from its members.

Thus, the complexity of the concept of disability and its management has increasingly been understood as resulting from interactions between a person’s characteristics and those of the society in which they live.

This perspective is one of a shared human experience that recognises individual differences. It also highlights the special relevance of artistic expression of the frontier of normalcy.

“Handicap”, een Engels woord?

De term ‘handicap’ is afgeleid van de naam van een populair Engels spel in de 17e eeuw: ‘hand in cap’, letterlijk ‘de hand in de hoed’ (zie het schilderij van David Teniers de Jonge).

Twee spelers en een arbiter deponeerden een som geld als een belofte in een hoed. Vervolgens stelden de spelers elk een object voor om te ruilen. De arbiter schatte de waarde ervan, en de eigenaar van het minst waardevolle object compenseerde het verschil met de geldsom om het eigen vermogen te herstellen.

Deux joueurs et un arbitre déposaient une somme d’argent en gage dans un chapeau. Puis les joueurs proposaient chacun un objet à échanger. L’arbitre en estimait la valeur et le propriétaire de l’objet le moins précieux compensait la différence par une somme d’argent pour rétablir l’équité.

Par extension, le mot « handicap » a ensuite désigné toute action destinée à rendre une compétition plus équitable. En sport, c’est le candidat le plus fort qui a la charge de se rapprocher du moins fort.

Dans les courses hippiques à handicap, un handicapeur nivelle les chances en lestant la selle des chevaux les plus rapides d’un poids additionnel afin d’équilibrer les probabilités de victoire.

Le handicap est ainsi devenu évocateur d’une pénalité, d’un obstacle, voire d’un défaut.

Par extension, depuis une centaine d’années, le terme est associé à l’infirmité et aux déficiences.

Is “handicap” an English word?

The term handicap derives from an English game in vogue in the 17th century: ‘hand in cap’ (see David Teniers The Younger’s painting).

Two players and a referee deposited a sum of money as pledge in a hat. Then the players each proposed an object to trade. The referee estimated its value, and the owner of the least valuable object compensated the difference of money to restore equity.

By extension, the word ‘handicap’ came to designate any maneuver intended to make a competition fairer. In sport, the stronger candidate is in charge of getting closer to the weaker. In handicap horse racing, a handicapper saddles the fastest horses with extra weight to balance the odds of victory.

Handicap has thus become evocative of a penalty, an obstacle, or even a defect.

By extension, the term has come to be associated with disability and disability.

MAN AND HIS SENSES Neurostimulatie in dienst van mensen met een handicap Er is een hele weg afgelegd sinds Luigi Galvani (1737-1798) met zijn experimenten wist aan te tonen dat de pootspieren van een kikker samentrekken wanneer een stroom wordt aangelegd op de zenuw.

Neurostimulatie is bedoeld om de activiteit van ons zenuwstelsel te wijzigen door elektrische prikkels, gericht en met een therapeutisch doel – in veel gevallen is dat het behandelen van een handicap. Vandaag zijn er heel wat toepassingen waardoor het lichaam functionaliteiten kan terugkrijgen die het kwijtgeraakt was. Dankzij cochleaire implantaten kunnen mensen hun gehoor gedeeltelijk terugkrijgen. Visuele protheses doen hetzelfde voor het gezichtsvermogen en met pacemakers kan de elektrische geleiding van het hart gestuurd worden.

De neurostimulatoren van de eerste generatie die hier te zien zijn, werden ter beschikking gesteld door het University College London, een pionier op het vlak van implanteerbare technologie. De recentere prototypes zijn afkomstig van de Université libre de Bruxelles.

Morgen zullen nieuwe generaties neurostimulatoren misschien epilepsie of zwaarlijvigheid kunnen overwinnen. De Université libre de Bruxelles werkt daar actief aan mee.

La neurostimulation au service du handicap Nous avons fait du chemin depuis Luigi Galvani (1737-1798) qui a montré, par ses expériences, que les muscles des pattes de la grenouille se contractent lorsqu’un courant est appliqué au nerf.

La neurostimulation vise à modifier l’activité de notre système nerveux, par des stimulations électriques, de manière ciblée et dans un but thérapeutique, typiquement pour pallier un handicap.

Aujourd’hui, de nombreuses applications permettent de retrouver des fonctionnalités que notre corps a perdues. Les implants cochléaires permettent de rendre partiellement l’ouïe, les prothèses visuelles font de même pour la vue, les pacemakers permettent de réguler le système de conduction électrique du cœur.

Les neurostimulateurs de toute première génération, montrés ici, sont généreusement prêtés par l’University College London, pionnière en technologie implantable. Les prototypes plus récents proviennent de l’Université libre de Bruxelles.

Demain, de nouvelles générations de neurostimulateurs pourront peut-être vaincre l’épilepsie ou l’obésité. L’Université libre de Bruxelles y travaille activement.

Neurostimulation to help disabilities Significant progress has been made since Luigi Galvani (1737-1798), who demonstrated through his experiments that the muscles in frogs’ legs contract when a current is applied to the nerve.

Neurostimulation aims to modify the activity of our nervous system through targeted electrical stimulation for therapeutic purposes, typically to relieve a disability. Today, many applications allow us to rediscover functionalities that our body has lost. Cochlear implants allow patients to recover partial hearing, visual prosthetics do the same for the vision and pace-makers regulate the heart’s electrical conduction system.

The first-generation neurostimulators shown here have been generously loaned by University College London, a pioneer in implantable technology. The more recent prototypes come from the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB).

In the future, new generations of neurostimulators may be able to conquer epilepsy or obesity. The ULB is working actively in this area.

Het heeft niet tot het einde van de 20e eeuw geduurd voor mannen en vrouwen met elkaar begonnen te wedijveren op het gebied van vindingrijkheid en het vergroten van hun fysieke, functionele of auditieve capaciteiten, en de jaren 1950 markeerden een keerpunt in de geschiedenis van de medische readaptatietechnologieën.

Na de ontwikkeling van versterkende hoorapparaten zag in de jaren 1970 de cochleaire implantaattechnologie het licht.

Oorspronkelijk bedoeld voor volwassenen die doof werden, wordt deze techniek geleidelijk uitgebreid naar prelinguaal dove kinderen.

Maar in tegenstelling tot de hoogdravende aankondigingen bieden deze technieken geen gehoorervaring gelijkwaardig aan die van een horende, en vereisen ze een lang proces van rehabilitatie en orthofonische oefeningen, met gemengde resultaten.

De dovengemeenschappen, dat wil zeggen de groepen van dove gebarentaalsprekers, hebben van oudsher kritiek geuit op een louter medische of rehabilitatieve benadering van doofheid.

Hoewel gebarentalen al lang gedocumenteerd zijn, werd het abstractie- en zelfs denkvermogen van dove gebarentaalgebruikers lang in twijfel getrokken. Aan het eind van de 19e eeuw werd het gebruik van gebarentaal, na felle controverse, verboden in de meeste instellingen voor jonge doven, wat leidde tot slechte resultaten bij talloze leerlingen. Pas aan het eind van de 20e eeuw kwam er een kentering, in het ene land al meer dan in het andere.

Toen in de jaren 1980-90 de eerste prelinguaal dove kinderen een implantaat kregen, liet een reactie van de dovengemeenschap niet lang op zich wachten. Deze technologische innovatie - waarvan het succes werd afgemeten aan het feit dat dove kinderen gebarentaal lieten vallen - kwam op een moment dat het verbod op gebarentalen werd opgeheven (invoering van de eerste tweetalige klassen in de jaren 1980, professionalisering van gebarentolken enzovoort.

Op dit moment dringt een aantal nationale dovenverenigingen erop aan dat dove kinderen gebarentaal leren, los van de auditieve technieken die daarnaast worden gebruikt. Être sourd… et alors ?

Si les hommes et les femmes n’ont pas attendu la fin du XXe siècle pour rivaliser d’ingéniosité et chercher à augmenter leurs capacités corporelles, fonctionnelles ou auditives, les années 1950 marquent un tournant dans l’histoire des technologies médicales réadaptatives.

Après l’essor des prothèses auditives amplificatrices, la technologie des implants cochléaires apparaît dans les années 1970.

D’abord destinées aux adultes devenus sourds, leurs indications s’étendent progressivement aux enfants sourds prélinguaux.

Toutefois, bien loin des annonces dithyrambiques, ces techniques ne permettent pas de faire l’expérience de capacités auditives équivalentes à celles d’une personne entendante, elles nécessitent des actes rééducatifs et/ou orthophoniques longs, dont les résultats sont inégaux.

Les communautés sourdes, c’est-à-dire les groupes constitués par les sourds locuteurs des langues des signes ont historiquement constitué le lieu d’émergence de critiques à l’encontre de ces approches uniquement médicales ou réadaptatives de la surdité.

Si les langues signées sont attestées de longue date, les sourds signeurs se sont longtemps vus mettre en doute leur capacité d’abstraction, voire d’accès à la pensée. À la fin du XIXe siècle, l’usage de la langue des signes proscrite dans la plupart des institutions de jeunes sourds, après d’intenses controverses, se traduit en un échec scolaire massif des élèves. Ce ne sera qu’à la fin du XXe siècle que le mouvement connaîtra un repli, inégal selon les pays.

Lorsque les premiers enfants sourds prélinguaux sont implantés dans les années 1980-1990, les communautés sourdes n’ont donc pas été sans réagir. Cette innovation technologique – dont le succès est mesuré à l’abandon de la langue des signes par l’enfant sourd – survient en effet alors même que les langues des signes voient timidement se lever l’interdit qui jusqu’alors pesait sur elles (mise en place des premières classes bilingues dans les années 1980, professionnalisation des corps d’interprètes langue des signeslangues vocales, etc.).

Actuellement, un certain nombre d’associations nationales de sourds insistent sur l’acquisition d’une langue des signes par l’enfant sourd, indépendamment des techniques auditives utilisées par ailleurs, elles expriment leurs réticences vis-à-vis des ambitions thérapeutiques suscitées par les recherches en biologie génétique.

Being deaf, then what?

Although men and women did not wait for the end of the 20th century to challenge their ingenuity and try to increase their physical, functional and auditory abilities, the 1950s marked a turning point in the history of rehabilitative medical technologies.

After the boom in amplifying hearing aids, the 1970s saw the appearance of cochlear implant technology. They were originally intended for adults who had lost their hearing, but their use gradually extended to deaf prelingual children. However, away from the eulogistic advertisements, these techniques do not allow people to experience hearing equivalent to that of a hearing person and they require long rehabilitative and/or speech and language work, whose results are inconsistent.

Deaf communities, i.e. groups of deaf people who speak sign language, have historically been at the origin of criticisms against purely medical or rehabilitative approaches to deafness.

Although sign languages have been in use for a long time, the capacity of deaf signers for abstraction, and even thinking, has long been called into question. At the end of the 19th century, after intense controversy, the use of sign language was banned in most schools for young deaf people, resulting in large-scale academic failure among students. It was not until the end of the 20th century that the movement experienced a decline, whose extent varied depending on the country.

When the first deaf prelingual children received implants in the 1980s-1990s, there was a strong reaction from the deaf community.

This technological innovation - whose success was measured at the time by the abandonment of sign language by deaf children occurred despite the fact that the ban on sign languages was starting to be lifted (creation of the first bilingual classes in the 1980s, professionalisation of associations of sign language-spoken language interpreters, etc.)

Als men me als een blinde of gehandicapte fotograaf bestempelt, is dat om er een vleugje exotiek aan te geven. Mijn creativiteit staat los van mijn handicap. Die dwingt me er alleen toe om oplossingen te verzinnen voor technische problemen.

Ik kijk via een derde oog, dat van de verbeelding en de geest, ‘de geest als bewustzijn van het lichaam’, zoals Spinoza zei. Je regarde à l’aide d’un troisième œil, celui de l’imaginaire et de l’esprit, “l’esprit comme conscience du corps”, a dit Spinoza. Lorsque je fais la photo d’un modèle, je ne le vois pas, mais je l’imagine. Je suis comme Don Quichotte qui ne perçoit pas les femmes réelles mais qui voit Dulcinea.

Je vois à travers les mots qui me décrivent la réalité visuelle.

J’essaie de voir l’invisible et dépasser la prison du visible comme tant d’artistes voyants qui traduisent dans leurs œuvres leur réalité intérieure. Pour moi, l’art passe par le verbe, berceau de toutes les images. » Evgen Bavcar

Evgen Bavcar, the blind photographer “I do not consider myself a disabled artist, rather a person with a disability. Blindness cannot define who I am. Whether people think of me as a blind or disabled photographer is irrelevant. My work is independent of my disability, which only requires me to look for solutions for getting around the technical problems.

I see using a third eye, that of my imagination and spirit, “the spirit as the conscience of the body”, according to Spinoza. When I take a photo of a model, I cannot see it but I can imagine it. I am like Don Quixote, who did not see real women, but saw Dulcinea.

MAN IN MOTION Een rare snuiter De grootte van de cortexgebieden in de hersenen die verschillende delen van het lichaam besturen, hangt niet af van de grootte van deze lichaamsdelen maar van hun functie. Dit weten we sinds het werk van de neurochirurg Wilder Penfield in de jaren 1950.

Omwille van de complexiteit van bewegingen is de zone die overeenkomt met de tong breder dan degene die de schouder bestuurt. Evenzo is het gebied van de cortex dat overeenkomt met de gevoeligheid van elke vinger groter dan dat van de schedel, rug of kuit.

Dr. Penfield beeldde deze ontdekking af door een ‘motorische homunculus’ met de verhoudingen van de motorische cortex, en een ‘sensorische homunculus met die van de sensorische cortex.

De lokalisatie van letsels in de cerebrale hemisferen en, meer recent, de demonstratie van gebieden van hersenactiviteit door magnetische resonantiebeeldvorming (MRI), vormen een aanvulling op de bevindingen van Dr. Penfield.

Un étrange bonhomme Depuis les travaux menés dans les années 1950 par le neurochirurgien Wilder Penfield, nous savons que la taille des zones du cortex ne dépend pas de la dimension des parties du corps qu’elles contrôlent, mais de leur fonction.

Du fait de la complexité des mouvements, la zone qui correspond à la langue est plus étendue que celle qui contrôle les mouvements de l’épaule. De même, la zone du cortex qui correspond à la sensibilité de chaque doigt est plus grande que celles du crâne, du dos ou du mollet.

Cette découverte, le Dr Penfield a voulu la représenter en construisant, un « homunculus moteur », aux proportions du cortex moteur, et un « homunculus sensitif », relatif au cortex sensitif.

La localisation des lésions dans les hémisphères cérébraux, et, plus récemment, la démonstration par l’imagerie par résonance magnétique (IRM) des différentes zones du cerveau du sujet en activité, complètent les découvertes du Dr Penfield.

A strange bloke The size of the cortex areas controlling different parts of the body does not depend on the size these bodyparts but on their function, as we have known since the work carried out by the neurosurgeon Wilder Penfield in the 1950s.

In relation to the complexity of movements, the zone corresponding to the tongue is wider than the one that controls the shoulder. Similarly, the area of the cortex that corresponds to the sensitivity of each finger is larger than that for the skull, back or calf.

Dr. Penfield represent this discovery by constructing a ‘motor homunculus’ with the proportions of the motor cortex, and a ‘sensory homunculus with those of the sensory cortex.

The localisation of lesions in the brain hemispheres and, more recently, the demonstration of interaction between different areas of brain activity by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), complement Dr. Penfield’s findings.

Motorische controle De manier waarop iemand zich recht houdt of zijn bewegingen regelt, gaat gepaard met een erg complex samenspel van processen in het brein.

Het brein integreert voortdurend de waarneming die de persoon heeft van zichzelf en de omgeving waarin hij zich beweegt, zijn intenties, angsten, herinneringen aan voorbije ervaringen, de spierspanning en de positie van alle gewrichten van het lichaam, en vergelijkt de voorgestelde beweging met de uitgevoerde beweging om deze te corrigeren indien nodig.

Onderzoek van de beweging is evenwel afhankelijk van de technologie om bewegingen te registreren. In 1872 ontleedde fotograaf Eadweard Muybridge beweging met behulp van 24 fotocamera’s en toonde aan dat een paard in galop op een bepaald moment alle vier de hoeven in de lucht heeft. Daarmee was hij de uitvinder van de zogenaamde zoopraxografie.

Rond die tijd vond de Franse fysioloog Étienne-Jules Marey verschillende instrumenten uit, waaronder het fotografisch geweer, om bewegingen vast te leggen en te meten: de chronofotografie.

The brain is constantly integrating the perception that a person has of themselves and of the environment in which this person is evolving, their intentions, their apprehensions, memories of past experiences, muscle tension and the positions of every joint in the body, and it compares the intended movement with the actual movement in order to potentially correct it.

The study of movement depends on the technology that allows us to record it. In 1872, photographer Eadweard Muybridge used 24 photo chambers to demonstrate that a horse has all four shoes in the air at the same time while galloping. That marked the invention of zoopraxography.

Wat Van Dale definieert als ‘medisch specialisme dat zich bezighoudt met de voorkoming en de behandeling van afwijkingen en ziekten van het bewegingsapparaat’ lijkt echter al van bij het ontstaan van de geneeskunde te hebben bestaan. De teksten van Hippokrates bevestigen dat, met beschrijvingen van toestellen gemaakt van netwerk, touw en houten planken om ontwrichtingen of botbreuken te behandelen door uitrekking van ledematen.

Ambroise Paré (1510-1590) zou het constante karakter van die bekommernis bevestigen door in zijn boek een uitgebreid arsenaal te beschrijven van ingewikkelde instrumenten die geacht werden ongevallen aan het beendergestel te kunnen rechtzetten, afwijkingen te corrigeren en zelfs mogelijke anatomische tekorten ‘in te vullen’.

Sommige van die objecten hebben fysiologisch totaal geen functie, zoals kunstoren of een kunstneus, een slangetje ter vervanging van de penis of een houten spatel in de plaats van een afgesneden tong1.

Ambroise Paré zou zelfs een kunsthand en kunstarm van ijzer en hout bedenken, ware triomfen van de mechaniek terwijl dat deel van de wetenschap in de 16e eeuw nog in zijn kinderschoenen stond. pathologie als pedagogie, zowel geneeskunde als hygiëne beslaat.

Ze is gestoeld op verzorging maar evenzeer op gezondheidstoezicht bij de bevolking.

Institutionalisering van het woord Het woord verwijst in die laatste optiek dan naar een ruimer spectrum van operatieve of pedagogische praktijken, een gevarieerder domein van morfologische zettingen of correcties. Het zou nog een tijd duren vooraleer de orthopedie de leerstof van een specifieke richting aan de Parijse geneeskundefaculteit zou worden. Ongetwijfeld moet het ‘interdisciplinaire’ aspect van de orthopedie een hinderpaal geweest zijn. De praktijk die zij in het leven riep, moest zich nog afscheiden van de heelkunde, het zorgend aspect moest nog ondubbelzinnig richting pedagogie evolueren.

Uiteindelijk kwam in 1862 de cursus van Jean-François Malgaigne, uitgegeven door Adrien Delahaye, duidelijk naar voren als de eerste universitaire studie over orthopedie1. Ambroise Paré (1510-1590) confirmera la constance de cette préoccupation. Certains objets sont dénués de toute fonction physiologique, comme l’oreille ou le nez artificiels, la canule suppléant la verge, la spatule de bois suppléant la langue coupée1. D’autres, en revanche, visent une opération correctrice comme le « corset de fer pour dresser un corps tordu », la « bottine de cuir bouilli et épais » pour inverser le vice des jambes, la « potence » soutenant la fesse « pour faire aller droit une personne qui serait boiteuse2 ». Ambroise Paré imaginera même une main et un bras artificiels de fer et de bois, triomphes de la mécanique, science encore en gestation au XVIe siècle. L’intervention sur la morphologie est issue, incontestablement, d’une longue tradition.

L’orthopédie porte alors son regard sur la naissance des mauvaises tenues, leur différenciation, leur danger. Elle incarne la nouvelle exigence pédagogique et sanitaire de l’époque des Lumières. Elle se développe sur un territoire traversant la pathologie comme la pédagogie, la médecine, comme l’hygiène. Elle se fonde sur les soins autant que sur la surveillance sanitaire des populations.

L’institutionnalisation du mot Le mot désigne alors un spectre plus étendu de pratiques opératoires ou pédagogiques, un champ plus varié de réductions ou de corrections morphologiques. Il faut du temps encore pour que l’orthopédie devienne la matière d’un enseignement spécifique à la faculté de médecine de Paris. Son aspect « interdisciplinaire » a pu, à coup sûr, faire obstacle. Sans doute fallait-il que la pratique qu’elle a introduite se détache de la chirurgie, que le soin consente à se rapprocher de la pédagogie.

Enfin, le cours de Jean-François Malgaigne, publié par Adrien Delahaye en 1862, se présente clairement comme la première étude universitaire portant sur l’orthopédie1. Il montre alors combien peut s’étendre ce champ, centré sur la définition de la « bonne » morphologie, mais tout autant sur son entretien, son amélioration, ses révisions. Luxations et fractures sont du coup présentées selon toutes leurs occurrences possibles, mais aussi les « rétractions musculaires », les « raideurs articulaires », la « cambrure du pied », les « déviations de la taille », des plus discrètes aux plus alarmantes.

L’apparition du mot « orthopédie » au siècle des Lumières, annonce l’approfondissement d’une discipline qui s’enrichira au XIXe siècle des découvertes de la science et de la technique.

The Birth of Orthopaedics The French word “orthopédie” (orthopaedics) did not appear until the mid-18th century. However, what Larousse defines as “the academic approach to the treatment of disorders of the skeleton, joints and musculoskeletal system” seems to have existed since the birth of medicine. The Hippocratic texts confirm this, with descriptions of devices made from mesh, rope and wooden planks that stretched the limbs to ease dislocations or fractures.

In his work, Ambroise Paré (1510-1590) described a wide variety of complex instruments to rectify skeletal accidents, improve deviations and even “make up for” possible anatomical absences, thus confirming that this was an ongoing preoccupation. Some items had no physiological function, such as the artificial ear or nose, the cannula replacing the penis or the wooden spatula replacing the cut-off tongue2. Others, however, were intended for corrective operations, such as the “iron corset to straighten a twisted body”, the “thick, boiled leather boot” to correct a leg defect and the “bracket” supporting the buttock “to make a person with a limp walk straight3”. Ambroise Paré even designed an artificial hand and arm from iron and wood; this was a triumph of mechanics, as science was still in its infancy in the 16th century.

Morphological interventions have an undeniably long tradition.

The origins of the word The French word “orthopédie” appears for the first time in 1741, in the book by Nicolas Andry de Boisregard, advisor to the king and former Dean of the Faculty of Medicine in Paris. He even created the word, taking the ancient Greek orthos, “straight”, and paideia, “rearing of children” to refer to the “process that makes a child straight”.

It was originally a teaching method that attempted to “teach different ways of preventing and correcting bodily deformities in children1”. But it was also a new outlook on certain corrections, inasmuch as we consider that these can occur as a result of exercises and movements carried out by the children themselves.

Orthopaedics then focused on the origin of poor behaviours, the distinctions between them and the risks involved. It embodied the new health and educational requirement of the Age of Enlightenment, developing along a path that had links to pathology, education, medicine and hygiene. It was based on treatment as much as on monitoring the health of the population.

The institutionalisation of the word The word then came to mean a broader spectrum of operating and educational practices, a more varied range of morphological corrections and reductions. It was still some time before orthopaedics became a separate subject taught at the Faculty of Medicine in Paris. Its “interdisciplinary” nature was undoubtedly an obstacle to this. The practice it introduced had to be distinguished from surgery and the treatment had to move towards education.

Lastly, the course by Jean-François Malgaigne, published in 1862 by Adrien Delahaye, is clearly the first university study on the subject of orthopaedics2. It shows how this field could expand, focusing on the definition of “good” morphology, but above all on its maintenance, improvement and revisions. All the possible occurrences of dislocations and fractures were presented, as well as “muscular retractions”, “joint stiffness”, the “arch of the foot” and “curvatures”, from the almost unnoticeable to the most alarming.

The appearance of the word “orthopédie” in the Age of Enlightenment heralded the development of a discipline that would benefit from 19th-century discoveries in science and technology.

GO Wheelchair, Materialise Benjamin Hubert van ontwerpbureau Layer is het creatieve brein achter de GO Wheelchair, de eerste rolstoel voor consumenten ter wereld die met een 3D-printer werd gemaakt.

Het project is het resultaat van een ontwikkelingscyclus die twee jaar heeft geduurd en waaraan een intensieve onderzoeksfase is voorafgegaan. Layer werkte hiervoor nauw samen met vakmensen uit de medische sector en rolstoelgebruikers. Nadat specifieke problemen in kaart waren gebracht – rolstoelen worden niet op maat van het lichaam van de patiënt gemaakt, wat voor ongemakken en pijn zorgt – begonnen Benjamin en zijn team te werken aan een ontwerp dat niet enkel het gebruikscomfort en de veiligheid wou verbeteren, maar dat ook het stigma dat op rolstoelen rust, wou aanpakken.

Tijdens de ontwerpfase werd duidelijk dat 3D-printen de meest geschikte technologie was om een rolstoel te ontwikkelen die

eenvoudig te produceren was en toch volledig was aangepast aan het lichaam van de gebruiker. Met meer dan 27 jaar ervaring in de meest diverse 3D-printtechnologieën bleek Materialise de perfecte partner te zijn voor dit project. GO Wheelchair, Materialise Benjamin Hubert of design agency Layer is the creative force behind the GO Wheelchair, the world’s first 3D printed consumer wheelchair.

The project is the result of a two-year development cycle, after first having gone through an intense research phase in which Layer worked closely together with medical professionals and wheelchair users. After establishing problem areas – wheelchairs are not tailormade to the person’s body, which induces discomfort and pain – Benjamin and his team set about creating a design that would both improve user comfort and safety, as well as remove some of the stigma surrounding wheelchairs.

During this design process, it became clear that 3D Printing was the most suitable technology available to create a chair that was easy to manufacture, yet completely customized to the user’s body.

With more than 27 years of experience in a myriad of 3D printing technologies, Materialise proved to be the perfect partner to advise on the best methods for producing each part and to enable Benjamin to realize his vision.

The 3D printed made-to-measure parts of the GO Wheelchair include the seat with integrated cushioning structure and the foot rest. Limieten van het burgerschap en grenzen van de menselijkheid: de politieke inzet van de handicap Het vermogen om de handicap te esthetiseren, te integreren in het dagelijks leven, in kunst en sport, er een aanvaarde en gevaloriseerde component van de identiteit van te maken, is tegelijk de vrucht en de weerspiegeling van een diepgaande evolutie van de westerse samenlevingen.

Op het einde van de 18e eeuw luidden de Amerikaanse en de Franse revolutie het einde van de standenmaatschappij in en vestigden zij een beginsel van gelijkheid tussen mensen. De praktische uitvoering daarvan verliep echter zeer geleidelijk. In de 19e eeuw vielen vrouwen slechts heel gedeeltelijk onder het politieke burgerschap. Het keek met een wantrouwig oog naar armen en naar migranten - zelfs interne. Het bood ‘invaliden’ weliswaar bijstand maar duwde hen door opsluiting in tehuizen naar de randen van de samenleving.

In de 20e eeuw raakte, in liberale democratieën, de kring van het burgerschap verruimd. Het algemeen stemrecht werd eerst tot de minst gegoede bevolkingslagen uitgebreid en later tot de vrouwen.

Socialezekerheidsstelsels gaven werknemers sociale rechten, terwijl er tot dan toe nagenoeg alleen van bijstand sprake was. Deze systemen hadden als doel de relaties tussen arbeiders en werkgevers, tussen loontrekkenden en zelfstandigen te harmoniseren. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog was werk het principe waarop economieën, geleid door de groeigedachte, georganiseerd waren. Precies die prioriteit bepaalde hoe men naar het lot van gehandicapten keek.

Voor hen was ‘herstel’ het ordewoord: de piepjonge Europese gemeenschap zocht in de jaren 1950 en 1960 de verminkte arbeiders te ‘rehabiliteren’ om hen opnieuw productief te maken.

De tentoonstelling The Art of Difference laat zien welke weg sindsdien is afgelegd. Vraagtekens plaatsen bij het productivisme bevestigt mensen in hun intrinsieke waarde. De kritiek op de grenzen van het burgerschap, die meer bepaald op gang kwam door de dekolonisatie, leidde tot een nieuwe kijk op de ‘marginale’ groepen, gesymboliseerd door de geschriften van de filosoof Michel Foucault.

Het politieke debat ging niet meer louter over integratie van de arbeidersklasse: het ontdekte minderheden die niet meer uitsluitend werden gedefinieerd op grond van hiërarchieën op het werk. Dankzij de toenemende scholingsgraad, eerst secundair en later universitair, gingen individuen verder denken en werden zij ertoe gestimuleerd

zelf hun leven uit te bouwen en hun eigenheid te doen gelden.

De bekommernis die gehandicapten drijft, is dan niet langer alleen het verdedigen van hun waardigheid, maar de wil om hun persoon evenwaardig en gelijk met ieder ander persoon te laten gelden door voortaan een identiteit te weigeren die als minderwaardig wordt ingeschat.

Heel het mens-zijn wordt daardoor herbepaald. In de 19e eeuw gaven ‘monstruositeiten’ op kermissen voorbijgangers de kans zich als ‘normaal’ en superieur ten opzichte van mensen met een afwijking op te stellen. Tegenwoordig draagt het esthetiseren van de handicap bij aan het egaliseren van het mens-zijn, aan het slopen van de interne grenzen ervan, aan het in vraag stellen van de normen die de ‘constructie van het zelf’ beperken.

Limites de la citoyenneté et frontières de l’humanité : les enjeux politiques du handicap La capacité d’esthétiser le handicap, de l’intégrer à la vie quotidienne, à l’art, au sport, d’en faire une composante identitaire assumée et valorisée, est à la fois le fruit et le reflet d’une évolution profonde des sociétés occidentales. À la fin du XVIIIe siècle, les révolutions américaine et française sonnent le glas des sociétés d’ordres et instituent un principe d’égalité entre les personnes. Mais sa mise en œuvre n’est que très progressive. Au XIXe siècle, la citoyenneté politique couvre imparfaitement les femmes. Elle se méfie des pauvres et des migrants (y compris intérieurs !). Elle offre aux « invalides » l’assistance mais les relègue aux marges de la société avec l’enfermement en hospices.

Le XXe siècle consacre l’élargissement du cercle de la citoyenneté dans les démocraties libérales. Le suffrage universel s’étend aux couches les plus modestes puis aux femmes. Les systèmes de Sécurité sociale dotent les travailleurs de droits sociaux, là où jusqu’alors prévalait l’assistance. Ils cherchent à harmoniser les relations entre ouvriers et employeurs, entre salariés et indépendants. Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le travail est le principe d’organisation d’économies centrées sur la croissance.

C’est à travers cette priorité qu’est perçu le sort des handicapés.

Pour eux, le mot d’ordre devient celui de la « réparation » : la toute jeune communauté européenne entend, dans les années 1950 et 1960, « réhabiliter » les ouvriers mutilés pour les rendre de nouveau productifs.

L’exposition The Art of Difference témoigne du chemin parcouru depuis lors. La remise en cause du productivisme permet d’affirmer la valeur intrinsèque des personnes. La critique des limites de la citoyenneté, ouverte notamment par la décolonisation, amène un nouveau regard sur les groupes « marginaux », que symbolisent les écrits du philosophe Michel Foucault. Le débat politique n’est plus seulement fixé sur l’intégration de la classe ouvrière : il découvre des minorités qui ne sont plus seulement définies sur la base des hiérarchies au travail. Le développement de la scolarisation, secondaire puis universitaire, dote les individus d’une conscience réflexive qui les incite à construire leur vie et à affirmer leur singularité. Ce n’est alors plus seulement le souci de défendre leur dignité qui anime les handicapés, mais une volonté de faire valoir leur personne à l’équivalent et à l’égal de toute autre, en refusant désormais une identité qui serait minorée.

C’est toute la condition humaine qui se trouve redéfinie. Au XIXe siècle, les « monstres » de foire permettaient aux badauds de se poser en « normaux » et en supérieurs face à des déviants. De nos jours, l’esthétisation du handicap contribue à égaliser la condition humaine, à en démanteler les frontières internes, à remettre en question les normes contraignant la « construction de soi ».

Limits of citizenship and the borders of humanity: the political challenges of disabilities The ability to aestheticise disability, turn it into part of everyday life, art and sport, make it a recognised and valued part of identity, is both the result and the reflection of a profound change in western societies.

In the late 18th century, the American and French revolutions sounded the death knell for societies of orders and introduced the principle of equality. But its implementation has been very gradual.

In the 19th century, political citizenship did not uniformly apply to women. It distrusted migrants (including domestic migrants!) and the poor. It offered assistance to “invalids” but relegated them to the margins of society by shutting them away in hospices.

The 20th century sanctioned the extension of citizenship in liberal democracies. Universal suffrage extended to the poorest classes and then to women. Social security systems gave workers social rights, where previously they had had assistance. They attempted to harmonise relations between workers and employers, between employees and the self-employed. After the Second World War, work was the principle for organising growth-based economies, and it 30

was as a result of this priority that the fate of people with disabilities was perceived. Their watchword became “reparation”; in the 1950s and 1960s, the new European community planned to “rehabilitate” mutilated workers to make them productive again.

The exhibition The Art of Difference bears witness to the progress made since those times. The challenging of productivism allows us to affirm people’s intrinsic value. Criticism of the limits of citizenship, caused primarily by decolonisation, led to a new vision of “marginal” groups, symbolised by the writings of the philosopher Michel Foucault. The political debate no longer focused only on the integration of the working classes; it discovered minorities who were no longer defined only based on work hierarchies. The growth of secondary and then university education gave individuals a reflective awareness that encouraged them to create their life and affirm their individuality. People with disabilities were no longer driven only by the desire to defend their dignity, but by a desire to assert themselves as equivalent and equal to others, by refusing to assume the identity of a minority.

The entire human condition was redefined. In the 19th century, fairground “monsters” allowed onlookers to see themselves as “normal” and superior to those deviants. Today, the aestheticisation of disability helps to level out the human condition, remove internal barriers and challenge the norms that bind “self-construction”.

Interfaces tussen hersenen en machine.

Een revolutie voor patiënten?

Een interface tussen hersenen en machine is een systeem dat toelaat onze hersenen te verbinden met een extern object – dat kan een computer zijn maar ook een auto, een prothese of een communicatiesysteem.

Tijdens een oefenfase leert de gebruiker zijn elektrische hersenactiviteit onder controle te krijgen; hij wisselt bijvoorbeeld fases waarin hij zich voorstelt een beweging met de rechterhand te maken af met fases waarin hij aan iets anders denkt. Beide fases induceren verschillende hersenritmes, die te zien zijn op een elektro-encefalogram. Aan de hand van een algoritme worden beide activiteiten ‘geklasseerd’. Als de geregistreerde elektrische hersenactiviteit nauwkeurig genoeg is, zal de gebruiker erin slagen de gewenste beweging over te brengen naar een robothand.

In theorie kan het algoritme een oneindig aantal bewegingen leren. In de praktijk vergt nauwkeurige controle over de elektrische hersenactiviteit heel veel oefening.

Deze technologie kan patiënten helpen die een amputatie hebben ondergaan. Protheses in verbinding met elektroden die rechtstreeks contact maken met de hersenen, kunnen opnieuw een zekere autonomie in het bewegen mogelijk maken. Gekoppeld aan een rolstoel kan een interface tussen hersenen en machine een verlamde patiënt in staat stellen zich te verplaatsen.

Zo’n interface kan ook gebruikt worden om te communiceren met mensen met het locked-in syndroom (mensen die ondanks een volledig geïmmobiliseerd lichaam bewust blijven).

Wisselwerkingen tussen mens en machine impliceren een verandering in de manier waarop we onze handelingen en onze verantwoordelijkheid ervaren. De technologie verandert immers niet alleen onszelf maar ook onze verhouding tot de anderen. Voelt een arts die een medische robot gebruikt zich nog even verantwoordelijk voor zijn daden als de ingreep verkeerd afloopt? Zal een militair die een drone gebruikt zich aangespoord voelen tot het doden van meer vijanden dan wanneer hij dat met zijn eigen handen moet doen?

Het is niet moeilijk in te zien dat het integreren van deze technologie in ons dagelijks leven heel wat ethische vragen zal oproepen.

Les interfaces cerveau-machine.

Une révolution pour les patients ?

Une interface cerveau-machine est un système qui permet de relier notre cerveau à un objet extérieur, lequel peut être un ordinateur, une voiture, une prothèse ou encore un système de communication.

Durant une phase d’entrainement, l’utilisateur apprend à contrôler son activité électrique cérébrale, il alterne par exemple des phases durant lesquelles il imagine produire un mouvement de sa main droite et des phases durant lesquelles il pense à autre chose. Ces deux phases induisent des rythmes cérébraux distincts, visibles sur un électroencéphalogramme. Un algorithme se charge alors de « classifier » ces deux activités. Si l’activité électrique cérébrale détectée est suffisamment précise, l’utilisateur pourra faire réaliser les mouvements qu’il veut à une main robotique.

En théorie, un nombre infini de mouvements peuvent être appris par l’algorithme. En réalité, contrôler assez précisément son activité électrique cérébrale demande beaucoup d’entrainement.

Cette technologie peut aider les patients ayant subi une amputation. Des prothèses connectées à des électrodes placées directement au contact du cerveau permettent de retrouver une autonomie dans les mouvements. Connectée à une chaise roulante, une interface cerveau-machine peut permettre à un patient souffrant de paralysie de se déplacer.

Elle peut aussi être utilisée pour communiquer avec les patients souffrant du syndrome de l’enfermement (un état dans lequel ceux-ci restent conscients bien que leur corps soit complètement immobilisé).

Les interactions hommes-machines impliquent un changement dans la manière dont nous percevons nos actions et notre responsabilité. En effet, si la technologie nous change, elle change aussi notre rapport aux autres. Un médecin qui utilise un robot médical se sent-il aussi responsable de ses actes si la chirurgie tourne mal ? Un militaire qui utilise un drone sera-t-il incité à tuer davantage d’ennemis que s’il devait le faire de ses propres mains ?

On peut aisément imaginer que l’intégration de cette technologie dans notre quotidien entraînera de nombreuses questions éthiques.

Brain-machine interfaces. A revolution for patients?

A brain-machine interface is a system that links our brain to an external object, which may be a computer, a car, a prosthesis or even a communication system.

During a training phase, users learn to control their brain’s electrical activity, for example alternating phases during which they imagine producing a movement with their right hand and phases during which they think about something else. These two phases produce different brain rhythms that can be seen on an electroencephalogram. An algorithm then “classifies” these two activities. If the electrical activity detected in the brain is accurate enough, users can make a robotic hand make the movements they want.

In theory, the algorithm can learn an infinite number of movements. In reality, controlling your brain’s electrical activity precisely enough requires a great deal of training.

This technology can help patients who have undergone an amputation. Prostheses connected to electrodes placed directly in contact with the brain allow them to recover a degree of autonomy in their movements. A brain-machine interface connected to a wheelchair can allow patients with a paralysis to move around.

It can also be used to communicate with patients suffering locked-in syndrome, (a condition in which they remain conscious even though their body is completely immobilised).

Human-machine interactions imply a change in the way we perceive our actions and our responsibility. Technology may change us, but it also changes our relationship with others. Does a doctor who uses a medical robot feel just as responsible for their actions if the surgery goes wrong? Does a soldier who uses a drone feel inclined to kill more enemies than if they had to do so with their own hands?

It is easy to envisage that the integration of this technology into our day-to-day lives will give rise to a number of ethical questions.

De morfologische vrijheid Andy Clark: materiële technologieën centraal in de definitie van de mens Andy Clark, auteur van Natural Born Cyborg, drijft de integratie van materiële technologieën in de vorming en de evolutie van individuen tot het uiterste en maakt daardoor van de menselijke soort een species technica. Het individu is in staat protheses en instrumenten in die mate op te nemen dat ze een deel van zichzelf worden.

Al vanaf zijn geboorte experimenteert de kleine mens met zijn aangeboren eigen instrumentarium en leert hij het gebruiken: ogen, stem, ledematen… Heel snel past het brein zich aan het gebruik van werktuigen aan, externe hulpmiddelen die hij zich eigen maakt en waarvan mondeling taalgebruik en later schrijven en rekenen deel uitmaken. Fundamenteel is er geen verschil tussen van nature ingebouwde werktuigen (organen, ledematen, zintuigen…), cultureel ingebouwde (zoals taal of rekenen) of technologisch ingebouwde, ongeacht of het daarbij gaat om uitwendige technische hulpmiddelen (bril, laptop, voertuig…) dan wel om inwendige (implantaten). In die zin is de mens van nature een cyborg.

Clark situeert de transhumanistische verbetering in het perspectief van dit vermogen om te incorporeren en dus om ons lichamelijk schema en zijn neurale basissen om te werken. Hoe belangrijk is het dat gegevens of vaardigheden fysiek in de hersenen gelokaliseerd zijn, in het lichaam, in implantaten of in externe hulpmiddelen?

Dit nieuwe concept van wat wij zijn relativeert weliswaar de afhankelijkheid van onze geest ten opzichte van ons lichamelijk omhulsel, maar impliceert geenszins een ontlichamelijking. De filosofie van de cyborg marginaliseert niet, ze benadrukt het polymorf functionele van het lichamelijk zijn en de inbouw in het lichaam.

‘Meervoudige manieren van ingebouwd zijn’, dat is wat ons in de toekomst te wachten staat.

Anders Sandberg en de morfologische vrijheid De transhumanistische Zweedse filosoof Anders Sandberg verdedigt de ‘morfologische vrijheid’ als een fundamenteel recht in een liberale democratische samenleving.

Het gaat daarbij niet alleen om het recht om als individu over je lichaam te beschikken, maar in radicalere zin om het recht om dat lichaam fysiek grondig te veranderen zoals men dat verlangt. Dat is niet zonder gevolg voor medische praktijken die beperkt worden door een therapeutisch kader dat in principe slechts ‘één soort gezondheid’ toelaat en niet erkent dat ‘de verlangens van de patiënt cruciale elementen zijn bij het definiëren van gezondheid’.

Al in de jaren 1960 schreef de Franse arts en filosoof Georges Canguilhem: ‘De normale mens is de normatieve mens, het wezen dat in staat is nieuwe normen te vestigen, zelfs organische.’ ‘De vitaliteit komt bij de mens tot ontplooiing in technische plasticiteit.’

De huidige biomedische wetenschap, onder druk van individuele verlangens en technische prestaties, weerspiegelt die overschrijdingsdynamiek nog meer.

Sandberg ziet het individu als een proces van ‘zelf(her)schepping’.

De Amerikaanse transseksuele transhumaniste Martine Rothblatt leest in die aanspraken de bevestiging van de autonomie van ieder persoon: ‘Eerst beseffen we dat we niet beperkt zijn door onze seksuele anatomie. Daarna dringt het tot ons door dat we niet beperkt zijn door onze anatomie zonder meer.’

William Bainbridge tussen techniek en symboliek De Amerikaanse socioloog William Sims Bainbridge interesseert zich voor wat men de morfologische vrijheid door gerobotiseerde of virtuele machtiging zou kunnen noemen.

Ze vergt geen fysieke wijzigingen aan het biologisch lichaam.

Robot-teleoperatie en virtuele avatars bieden omkeerbare belevingen die het lichaam ongemoeid laten. Maar het zou kunnen dat ze leiden tot een transformatie van de verhouding tot het lichaam die zelfs nog radicaler is dan de eigenlijke morfologische vrijheid: een inactiviteit van lichamen ten gunste van breinen in verbinding, een vorm van leven die steeds minder gekoppeld is aan iemands oorspronkelijke biologische realiteit.

Hans Moravec, als roboticus gespecialiseerd in AI, heeft het achterhaald zijn van het lichaam nog verder gedreven door ook het brein erbij te rekenen, dat kan worden overgedragen naar duurzamere, performantere dragers. We hebben het dan over het elektronisch digitaal uploaden van de persoon.

Van die speculaties en fantasieën zijn we nog ver, maar vandaag kan een individu wel talrijke avatars onderhouden die uitdrukking geven aan verschillende aspecten van zijn persoonlijkheid, via dewelke hij ervaringen beleeft en levens leidt die in de natuurlijke en maatschappelijke werkelijkheid onmogelijk of verboden zijn.

Vernietigende dissociatie of verrijkende diversificatie? Bainbridge wil in die technologieën in de eerste plaats kansen zien om de individuele en collectieve ervaring te verrijken.

La liberté morphologique Andy Clark : les technologies matérielles au cœur de la définition de l’homme Andy Clark, auteur de Natural Born Cyborg pousse jusqu’au bout l’intégration des technologies matérielles dans la constitution et l’évolution des individus, faisant de l’espèce humaine une species technica. L’individu est capable d’incorporer des prothèses et des outils au point d’en faire une partie de lui-même.

Dès la naissance, le petit d’homme expérimente et apprend l’usage de ses propres outils naturels : yeux, voix, membres… Très vite, le cerveau s’adapte à l’utilisation d’outils, d’accessoires extérieurs qu’il assimile dont le langage oral, plus tard l’écriture et le calcul font partie. Il n’y a pas fondamentalement de différence entre les outils naturellement incorporés (organes, membres, sens…), culturellement incorporés (tels le langage ou le calcul) ou technologiquement incorporés qu’il s’agisse de dispositifs techniques externes (lunettes, portables, véhicules…) ou internes (implants). C’est en ce sens que l’homme est naturellement un cyborg.

Clark situe l’amélioration transhumaniste dans la perspective de cette capacité d’incorporation et donc de refonte de notre schéma corporel et de ses bases neurales. Quelle importance que des données ou des compétences soient physiquement localisées dans le cerveau, dans le corps, dans des implants ou dans les dispositifs externes ?

Cette nouvelle conception de ce que nous sommes, si elle relativise la dépendance de notre esprit (mind) par rapport à notre enveloppe charnelle, n’implique aucunement une décorporéisation.

La philosophie du cyborg ne marginalise pas, elle accentue la corporéité et l’incorporation fonctionnelles polymorphes.

L’expérience à venir est celle des « multiples manières d’être incorporé ».

Anders Sandberg et la liberté morphologique Le philosophe transhumaniste suédois Anders Sandberg défend la « liberté morphologique » comme un droit fondamental dans une société démocratique libérale.

Il s’agit non seulement de la liberté pour l’individu de disposer de son corps, mais plus radicalement du droit de le modifier physiquement en profondeur suivant ses désirs. Elle ne va pas sans conséquences pour les pratiques médicales à l’étroit dans un cadre thérapeutique qui n’admet, en principe, qu’ « une seule santé » et ne reconnaît pas que « les désirs du patient sont des éléments cruciaux dans la définition de la santé. »

Dès les années 1960, le médecin et philosophe français, Georges Canguilhem, écrivait déjà : « L’homme normal, c’est l’homme normatif, l’être capable d’instituer de nouvelles normes, mêmes organiques ». « La vitalité organique s’épanouit chez l’homme en plasticité technique ».

La biomédecine contemporaine sollicitée par les désirs individuels et les performances techniques reflète davantage cette dynamique de dépassement.

Sandberg voit l’individu comme un processus d’« auto-(re)création ».

La transsexuelle transhumaniste américaine Martine Rothblatt lit ces revendications comme l’affirmation de l’autonomie de la personne : « D’abord nous réalisons que nous ne sommes pas limités par notre anatomie sexuelle. Puis vient l’éveil à l’idée que nous ne sommes pas limités par notre anatomie du tout ».

William Bainbridge entre technique et symbolique Le sociologue américain William Sims Bainbridge s’intéresse à ce que l’on pourrait appeler la liberté morphologique par procuration robotique ou virtuelle.

Celle-ci n’exige pas de modifications physiques du corps biologique. Téléopération robotique et avatars virtuels offrent des expériences réversibles qui laissent le corps intact. Mais il se pourrait qu’elles conduisent à une transformation du rapport au corps plus radicale même que la liberté morphologique proprement dite : une désuétude des corps au profit de cerveaux branchés, une forme de vie de plus en plus déconnectée de sa réalité biologique originelle.

Le roboticien spécialiste de l’IA Hans Moravec a poussé plus loin encore l’obsolescence du corps en y incluant le cerveau, à transférer vers des supports plus durables et plus performants. C’est le thème du téléchargement numérique électronique de la personne.

Loin encore de ces spéculations et fantasmes, un individu peut aujourd’hui entretenir de nombreux avatars exprimant divers aspects de sa personnalité au travers desquels il vit des expériences, des vies impossibles ou interdites dans la réalité naturelle et sociale.

Dissociation destructrice ou diversification enrichissante ?

Bainbridge veut voir dans ces technologies avant tout des opportunités d’enrichissement de l’expérience individuelle et collective.

The morphological freedom Andy Clark: material technology at the heart of the definition of humans Andy Clark, author of Natural Born Cyborg pushes the integration of material technologies into the creation and evolution of individuals to the limit, turning the human race into a species technica. Individuals are capable of incorporating prostheses and tools to such an extent that they become a part of them.

From birth, children experiment and learn how to use their own natural tools - eyes, voice, limbs, etc. The brain soon adapts to the use of external tools and accessories and assimilates their oral language; writing and calculation later become part of this. There is no fundamental difference between the natural tools (organs, limbs, senses, etc.), cultural tools (such as language and calculation) and technological tools we incorporate, whether these technical devices are external (glasses, mobiles, vehicles, etc.) or internal (implants).

It is in this sense that humans are naturally cyborgs.

Clark viewed transhumanist improvement from the angle of this ability to incorporate and thus rework the maps of our body and its neural bases. What does it matter if the data or skills are physically located in the brain, in the body, in implants or in external devices?

Although this new conception of what we are puts the dependency of our mind compared to our physical body into perspective, it in no way implies decorporealisation. The philosophy of the cyborg does not marginalise; it highlights polymorphous functional corporeality and incorporation.

The next experiment is that of “multiple ways of being incorporated”.

Anders Sandberg and morphological freedom Swedish transhumanist philosopher Anders Sandberg defends “morphological freedom” as a fundamental right in a liberal democratic society.

This is not just freedom for individuals to make use of their body, but more radically the right to make fundamental physical changes to it as they wish. This has major implications for crowded medical practices in a therapeutic environment that in principle accepts only “one form of health” and does not recognise that “the wishes of the patient are crucial in the definition of health.”

In the 1960s, French doctor and philosopher Georges Canguilhem wrote, “Normal man is normative man, a being capable of establishing new, even organic norms”. “Organic vitality blossoms in man as technical plasticity”.

The contemporary biomedicine demanded by individual desires and technical performances further reflects this process of transcendence.

Sandberg saw the individual as a process of “self-(re)creation”.

American transhumanist transsexual Martine Rothblatt reads these claims as confirmation of the autonomy of the person: “First comes the realization that we are not limited by our sexual anatomy. Then comes the awakening that we are not limited by our anatomy at all”.

William Bainbridge between technology and symbolism American sociologist William Sims Bainbridge is interested in what we could call morphological freedom by robotic or virtual proxy.

This does not require any physical modifications to the biological body. Robotic remote operations and virtual avatars offer reversible experiments that leave the body intact. However, they may lead to a more radical transformation of the relationship to the body than even morphological freedom itself; the disuse of the body in favour of connected brains, a form of life increasingly disconnected from its original biological reality.

Hans Moravec, specialist IA robotics engineer, has taken the obsolescence of the body even further by including the brain, which can be transferred to more sustainable and higher performing mediums. This is the theme of the electronic digital downloading of the individual.

Far from these speculations and fantasies, an individual can now maintain a number of avatars expressing different aspects of their personality, through which they have experiences and lives that are impossible or prohibited in natural and social reality.

Destructive dissociation or rewarding diversification? In these technologies, Bainbridge primarily wants to see opportunities to enhance the individual and collective experience.

Mondiale™ van Beb-deum ‘Mondiale™’: een zaal als kunstwerk en als metafoor die ons wil doen nadenken over wat we aan het worden zijn, over het onbewuste proces waarbij we veranderen in ‘augmented reality-halfbloeden’, in vervaardigde producten. Dit onbewuste proces, dat Günther Anders ‘body engineering’ noemt en Francis Fukuyama ‘genetic engineering’, heeft nochtans een les voor ons in petto: vanachter hun bonte apparaten confronteren deze lichamen, die tot leven komen onder de subtiele digitale penseeltoets van de kunstenaar, ons met de onmenselijkheid die zich heeft genesteld in het hart van wat we aanzien als de weg naar ontplooiing. Een weg die in de praktijk alleen leidt naar een vervreemdende uniformiteit.

Met andere woorden, als de geglobaliseerde postmenselijkheid van de door Beb-deum verbeelde toekomst traditionele Aziatische kapsels overneemt, pornografische Japanse tatoeages, regenererende schoonheidsmaskers of onderhuidse medische implantaten, is dat dan niet omdat wij het zijn die ons vandaag de dag laten tatoeëren en chemische prothesen gebruiken? En hebben we wel door dat we door zo te handelen - wellicht om uniek te zijn in de wereld - niets anders kunnen zijn dan een slechte kopie van onze medemens, het trieste resultaat van de combinatie van gestandaardiseerde patronen?

Marc Atallah Mondiale™ de Beb-deum « Mondiale™ » : une salle-œuvre, une salle-métaphore qui nous invite à réfléchir à ce que nous sommes en train de devenir, au processus inconscient qui nous métamorphose en « métis augmentés », c’est-à-dire en produits manufacturés. Ce processus inconscient, que Günther Anders nomme « body engineering » et Francis Fukuyama « ingénierie génétique », nous livre cependant une leçon : derrière leurs apparats bigarrés, tous ces corps, subtilement évoqués par le pinceau digital de l’artiste, nous renvoient à l’inhumanité nichée au cœur de ce que nous pensons être la voie vers l’épanouissement.

Une voie qui, en fait, n’aboutit qu’à une aliénante uniformité.

Autrement dit, si la posthumanité mondialisée du futur imaginée par Beb-deum adopte coiffures traditionnelles asiatiques, tatouages pornographiques japonais, masques de beauté régénérants, implants médicaux sous-cutanés, n’est-ce pas parce que c’est nous qui, aujourd’hui, sommes tatoués et recourons à des prothèses chimiques ? Et voyons-nous qu’en agissant de la sorte – sûrement pour être uniques au monde –, nous ne saurons être autre chose que la pauvre copie de nos semblables, le triste résultat de la combinaison de motifs standardisés ?

Mondiale™ by Beb-Deum “Mondiale™”: a room that is a work of art, a metaphorical room that invites us to reflect on what we are becoming, on the unconscious process that transforms us into “enhanced half-breeds”, into manufactured products. However, this unconscious process, which Günther Anders calls “body engineering” and Francis Fukuyama calls “genetic engineering”, teaches us a lesson. Behind their aesthetics, all of these bodies, subtly conveyed by the artist’s digital paintbrush, bring us back to the inhumanity nested inside what we consider to be the path to fulfilment, a path that in reality only leads to an alienating uniformity.

In other words, didn’t Beb-Deum’s globalised post-humanism of the future only adopt traditionally Asian hairstyles, Japanese pornographic tattoos, regenerative beauty masks and subdermal medical implants because we today have tattoos and rely on chemical prosthetic devices? And don’t we see that in reacting this way– surely to make ourselves unique–, we don’t know how to be anything other than a poor copy of our peers, the sad result of a combination of standardised patterns?

III. INBEELDEN. DE WAZIGE GRENZEN VAN WAT NORMAAL IS · IMAGINER. LES FRONTIÈRES FLOUES DE LA NORMALITÉ · IMAGINE. THE BLURRED LINES OF NORMALITY Bestaat zoiets als Art brut?

Art brut bestaat natuurlijk niet, maar het is een manier om uitdrukkingsvormen die lijken te ontsnappen aan de normen en conventies van de kunst te benoemen, verbeelden, omschrijven of er vat op te krijgen. Art brut, outsiderkunst, kunst van gekken, verschoppelingen, zieken; bijzondere kunst, andere kunst, marginale kunst...

Aan omschrijvingen geen gebrek. In de praktijk haalt geen enkele benaming de bovenhand. Opteert men voor een bepaalde naam, dan is het voor het gemak, soms gewoon uit luiheid, om ervan af te zijn. En soms ook uit opportunisme. Dat is tegenwoordig het geval, nu de hedendaagse notie van ‘art brut’ een opkomend segment van de kunstmarkt moet aanduiden dat steeds meer de aandacht vraagt van galeriehouders en verzamelaars.

Norm en afwijking bestaan maar doordat we ze zo benoemen.

Het is een heel systeem van onderlinge verschillen, die opgelegd, waargenomen of ondergaan worden, een topografie van aanwezigheden - binnen, buiten - die in elke samenleving vastgelegd wordt. Een samenleving vormen, dat is grenzen stellen en er de poreusheid van ondervinden, opeisen of aanvechten. De Kunst met grote K bestaat niet, net zomin als de Waarheid, alleen manieren van denken, zeggen, verbeelden en uitdrukken; manieren om uiting te geven aan de nood om kunst te maken, wanneer die zich voordoet. Niets staat helemaal op zich. Het anders-zijn is geen essentieel kenmerk, maar hangt af van de context, of is zo vastgelegd.

Dat is wat we zien bij de kunsten die zich in het grensgebied van de kunst situeren, wat gekkenkunst genoemd werd, en later art brut of outsiderkunst. Het anders-zijn waarvan deze kunsten getuigen, wordt vaak als absoluut voorgesteld, al bevindt dit anders-zijn zich ontegensprekelijk in relatie tot normen die men nu eens wil navolgen en dan weer wil omverwerpen. Ze belichamen een denkbeeldige waarheid, donker of licht, waaraan de kunst in de twintigste eeuw zich steeds is blijven spiegelen. Zeker sedert de jaren 1920, en tot op de dag van vandaag, zijn ze rechtstreeks gelinkt met het avant-gardisme, een generieke verzamelnaam voor het soms zo naïeve streven van de hedendaagse kunst naar innovatie, transgressie of herbronning.

Zo heeft elke periode haar verankering, elke grens zijn betekenis.

De ‘gekkenkunst’, bijvoorbeeld, was het hoogtepunt van het estheti45

sche project van de ‘ontregeling van alle zintuigen’, of de ontluistering, aan het begin van de 20e eeuw, van een antropologie die volledig werd bepaald door de kwestie van het ‘normale’ en het pathologische.

De art brut presenteerde zich na de Tweede Wereldoorlog als een alternatief voor een cultuur die zich net in de verschrikking had gestort.

De outsiderkunst tot slot maakte wat later zijn opwachting als de verbloemde uitdrukking van een geglobaliseerd individualisme dat graag wilde geloven in de weldoende effecten van kunst voor iedereen.

Dat verklaart waarom de kunsten in het grensgebied van de kunst pertinent weigeren zich in een hokje te laten steken. Het is omdat ze, net als elke andere expressievorm, bepaald worden door de tijden waarin ze voorkomen, door de stromingen, verhalen en percepties.

Hun uiterlijke vorm, en de betekenis die men eraan toekent, is altijd voor een deel fictief. Het zijn geen kunsten ‘zoals geen ander’, noch kunsten ‘zoals alle andere’. Ze nodigen ons telkens opnieuw uit om na te denken over het anders-zijn en het tegelijk te ervaren als verschil én als identiteit.

Carl Havelange L’art brut existe-t-il ?

L’art brut, évidemment, n’existe pas, mais seulement des manières de nommer, d’imaginer, de circonscrire ou de contrôler des formes d’expression qui paraissent échapper aux normes et aux conventions de l’art. Art brut, art outsider, art des fous, des exclus, des malades, arts singuliers, arts différenciés, arts en marge : les manières de désigner se sont multipliées et se disputent la précellence. Aucune, en vérité, ne l’emporte, sinon par commodité, parfois par paresse ou par lassitude. Parfois, aussi, par opportunisme. Ainsi, aujourd’hui, lorsque la notion contemporaine d’arts bruts permet de désigner un segment émergeant du marché de l’art qui sollicite, de plus en plus, l’attention des galeristes et des collectionneurs.

La norme et la différence n’existent, l’une par l’autre, que par les noms qu’on leur donne. C’est tout un système d’écarts, institués, perçus, subis, une topographie des présences – dedans, dehors – dont chaque société décide. Faire société, c’est établir des frontières et éprouver leurs porosités, les revendiquer ou les contester. L’Art n’existe pas, ni la Vérité, mais seulement des modes de penser, de dire, de figurer et d’exprimer, des manières de répondre, quand elle se fait sentir, à la nécessité de faire art. Il n’y a jamais de parfaite solitude.

L’altérité n’est pas d’essence, mais de circonstance ou d’institution.

Ainsi en va-t-il des arts aux frontières de l’art – disons l’art des fous, puis l’art brut, puis l’art outsider. L’altérité dont ils témoignent, souvent présentée comme un absolu, est pourtant, chaque fois, irréductiblement située par rapport à des normes que l’on veut tantôt célébrer et tantôt renverser. Ils incarnent une vérité imaginaire, 46

sombre ou lumineuse, au départ de laquelle l’art, au XXe siècle, n’a cessé de se réfléchir : depuis les années 1920, au moins, et jusqu’à aujourd’hui, ils sont directement associés à la question des avant-gardes, bannière générique de la vocation parfois si ingénue des arts contemporains à l’innovation, à la transgression ou à la refondation.

Alors à chaque temps son ancrage, bien entendu, à chaque frontière sa signification. L’art des fous, par exemple, est venu comme aboutissement du projet esthétique du « dérèglement de tous les sens » ou comme mise en abîme, au début du XXe siècle, d’une anthropologie entièrement déterminée par la question du normal et du pathologique ; l’art brut, au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, comme alternative à une culture qui venait de s’effondrer dans l’horreur ; l’art outsider, un peu plus tard, comme l’expression euphémisée d’un individualisme mondialisé qui voudrait croire aux vertus de l’art pour tous.

C’est pourquoi les arts aux frontières de l’art résistent si continûment aux catégories en lesquelles on voudrait les enclore. Parce qu’ils sont emportés, comme toute autre forme expressive, dans le sillage des temps, des genres, des histoires, des récits, des regards. Leur extériorité – et le sens qu’on lui attribue – est toujours en partie fictionnelle.

Ce ne sont ni des arts « à nuls autres pareils », ni des arts « comme les autres », mais, chaque fois, pour nous qui les voyons, une invitation à penser et à éprouver l’écart, indistinctement, comme altérité et comme identité.

Carl Havelange Does art brut (outsider art) exist?

Obviously, art brut does not exist, simply the way of naming, imagining, defining or controlling the forms of expression that seem to break away from the norms and conventions of art. Art brut, outsider art, art of the insane, the excluded, the mentally ill, peculiar arts, differentiated arts, marginal arts; it has an increasing plethora of names that compete for supremacy. In truth, none of them prevail, except through convenience and sometimes through laziness or fatigue. Sometimes too, through opportunism. So, today, the contemporary concept of art brut is used to describe an emerging sector of the art market, in which gallery owners and collectors are increasingly interested The norm and difference exist due to each other, and only through the names given to them. This is a whole system of differences, established, perceived, experienced, a topography of presences (inside, outside) for which each society decides. To create a society is to establish borders and test their porosity, claim them or contest them. Art does not exist, neither does Truth, simply the methods of thinking, saying, depicting and expressing, the ways of responding, when the need to create art is felt. There is never perfect seclusion. Otherness is not borne of essence, but of circumstance or tradition.

Thus, it goes from the arts to the boundaries of art - let’s say the art of the insane, then art brut, then outsider art. The otherness that they show, often presented as an absolute, is however, always irreducibly situated in relation to the norms that we want sometimes to celebrate, sometimes reverse. They embody an imaginary truth, shadowy or bright, which has constantly reflected art in the 20th century. Since at least the twenties until today, they have been directly associated with the question of the avant-gardes, a generic banner for the sometimes ingenuous vocation of the contemporary arts for innovation, transgression or reconstruction.

So, of course, each time has its roots and each boundary its meaning. For example, the art of the insane was the culmination of the aesthetic project of the “disruption of all the senses” or in the early 20th century, was a mise en abyme of an anthropology entirely determined by the question of normal and the pathological. After the Second World War, art brut was an alternative to a culture that had collapsed in horror. A little later, outsider art was the euphemistic expression of a globalised individualism that wanted to believe in the virtues of art for all.

This is why arts at the boundaries of art continually resist being pigeonholed into categories. Because they are carried away, like any other expressive form, in the wake of times, genres, histories, narratives and looks. Their exteriority - the meaning given to them is always partly fictional. They are neither arts “like no other”, nor arts “like the others”, but for us who see them, they are always an invitation to think and, equally, to experience the difference, like otherness and like identity.
