PROJECT OVERVIEW

SUMMARY

Sports Games — a state-wide athletic competition hosted annually in Michigan — requires a robust networking solution capable of streaming real-time, high-definition video/audio to event attendees, competitors, and, potentially, the general public. This year, Michigan State University — a public landgrant research university in East Lansing, Michigan — will host the event, specifically, within a 10-acre area near Spartan Stadium.

The 10-acre site, shown on the following page, is ideal for Sports Games. Nas the With various team sports and leagues represented at the event, the proposed network must sufficiently Livestream at least ten simultaneous events to any attending/localized device at any given time.As Networking Group 3, our mission is to fully assess Sports Games’ infrastructure demand and design a stable platform that delivers attendees/ competitors (and potentially, the general public) continuous, high-definition streaming capability of up to 10 concurrent sporting events. Our design must determine the networking equipment and services necessary to allow all

events to be streamed live. In addition, it MUST INCLUDE a technical schema with coordinated WAN points throughout the grounds and sub-venues, allowing Wi-Fi access for all attendees and competitors.

Sports Games — a Telos Online is a large-scale Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISP) that offers fiber, VoIP telephony, and other web services to businesses in the Denver, Colorado area since 2000.

The company owns and operates its own infrastructure, using Ubiquiti® products for all networks, from UniFi to airMAX to EdgeMAX, to power a nimble business delivering reliable service with quick delivery times and affordable pricing.

Founded in 1958, Bandimere Speedway is a full-time racing facility located at 5,869 feet elevation in Morrison, Colorado. It is approximately a mile long by a quarter mile wide and showcases a quarter-mile drag strip. Sanctioned by the NHRA (National Hot Rod Association), Bandimere Speedway holds more than 130 events a year, with peak crowds of 25,000 during a race weekend – almost 30,000 for its largest event.

WIRELESS REQUIREMENTS

Initially, Bandimere Speedway had a small Wi-Fi network to handle ticketing for entrance gates and a small fiber network for its timing system. It realized it needed better coverage for the ticketing system, as well as Point-of-Sale (PoS) for third-party vendors, track security, and guest Wi-Fi, which must be high-performance and robust to handle heavy traffic loads.

NETWORK CORE AND WIRELESS ACCESS

The UniFi XG Security Gateway feeds into the UniFi XG Switch, which connected to multiple UniFi Switches. Telos Online selected a variety of UniFi APs, each handpicked for its advantages, to suit each AP’s location at Bandimere Speedway. The UniFi BaseStation XG units are used to cover the east stands for the north and south ends of the track, as well as the Top Eliminator Club (TEC), an elevated seating area that can be rented out for private events.

The TEC also uses the UniFi SHD AP, and two UniFi AC Mesh Pro APs deliver Wi-Fi to the TEC stands, which seat over 700 attendees. The UniFi AC Mesh Pro and UniFi AC LR APs are also deployed at various buildings, including the ticket offices. For better coverage, the UniFi AC Mesh AP is frequently paired with the UMA-D antenna to deliver Wi-Fi to POS (Point-of-Sale) terminals for vendors in the stands, concessions area, fuel depot, and photo building.

THE NEED FOR POWER

AC power was used for most of the deployment; however, solar and battery power were used as well. Several locations for equipment used solar power because running AC power was cost-prohibitive, while portable batteries powered airMAX Point-to-Point (PtP) links to UniFi Access Points (APs) for temporary Wi-Fi coverage in rarely used locations.

NETWORK TOPOLOGY

Although there is a single physical network comprised of Ubiquiti products, Telos Online separated the UniFi and EdgeMAX networks, using VLANs and static IP addressing. networks for device management keep the wireless payload traffic separate from management traffic to increase security. Static IP addressing also helped to secure the network, as it would be hard for anyone to join the under-the-radar management network. Telos Online also used strong passwords and separate VLANs for management.

OUTDOOR ROUTING AND SWITCHING

Telos Online deployed a variety of EdgeMAX devices.

For outdoor routing, the EdgePoint® R6 is deployed in two locations. At the lower section of the west stands, it connects and powers three UniFi AC Mesh APs, while at the north end of the track, the EdgePoint R6 connects and powers two UniFi Video Cameras G3 and a UniFi AC Mesh AP.

For outdoor switching, the EdgePoint S16 is installed in three locations. At the north and south ends of the east stands, an EdgePoint S16 connects and powers three UniFi XG BaseStations and two additional UniFi APs. On the tower roof, the EdgePoint S16 connects and powers a UniFi XG BaseStation, a PrismStation AC, and a IsoStation AC. The EdgePower™ EP-54V-150W acts as a power supply for EdgePoint S16. The EdgePower features dual hot-swappable power modules for increased reliability and offers remote monitoring – helpful for any troubleshooting.

Telos Online installed many 1 Gbps and 10 Gbps UFiber links, which took advantage of the SFP+ ports of the EdgePoint S16 as well as the UniFi XG Switch. The network’s throughput can easily be increased as bandwidth demands grow.

POINT-TO-MULTIPOINT (PTMP) LINKS

Telos Online deployed several airMAX links around Bandimere Speedway to deliver wireless internet to various locations, including the photo building, upper west stands, and pole #1. “... all the UBNT equipment worked flawlessly [for the Nationals]... Even without any advertising or promotion of the Wi-Fi being there, close to 2000 people connected into and used the system and there were zero problems or failures.”

For PtMP links, the IsoStation™ AC and PrismStation AC act as APs, using horn antennas for sector coverage. A IsoStation AC and PrismStation AC are located on the tower roof, pointed towards different locations, and the second PrismStation AC is installed in the concessions area.

Two CPE models, the LiteBeam® AC and NanoBeam® AC, are used. The LiteBeam AC was selected for its ease of deployment, excellent performance, and affordability; it is installed in various locations including the photo building, pole #1, the office, and the highway sign.

The NanoBeam AC maximizes performance in a compact form factor and is deployed at multiple sites, including the upper section of the west stands.

UNIFI IN CHARGE

The UniFi devices are monitored and managed by the UniFi Controller software or the UniFi mobile app, while the UniFi Video Cameras are managed via their software or mobile app. Software for the UniFi devices and cameras, the Network Video Recorder (NVR), and UNMS run on the UniFi Application Server.

UNMS SOFTWARE

The other Ubiquiti devices offer two options: a web UI interface for individual device management, as well as the Ubiquiti Network Management System (UNMS).

ISSUES AND CORRESPONDING MITIGATION

ISSUE ONE

Given the variety of weather conditions that may be experienced during the sporting event, a number of situations might arise due to the various swings in one extreme or another.

The robustness of the Ubiquiti hardware – especially those designed for installation atop some form of pole or rigging apparatus – allows for operation in most weather conditions. All other hardware will be installed within buildings with a poured foundation at any necessary points throughout the venue. Cabling will be installed in conduit in high foot traffic areas and buried below ground. Loss of power or any individual piece of hardware will be covered in a future point.

02

ISSUE TWO

Whether through weather or some other external factor, the loss of power from the primary grid is always a possibility. Sudden total loss of power, as well as partial, can occur at any point in time.

There will be backup power generation hooked into the critical portions of the venue that will start immediately and seamlessly with the initial total loss of power from the main grid connection point. Another assignment of backup generation is designated explicitly for the leading networking equipment to prevent the corruption of configuration data and to ensure that the equipment can be adequately powered down in the event the power will not be restored before backup generators start to run through the available fuel. Until they are entirely powered down, they will operate in a lower transmission state, still providing access to rendered streaming services, which can include – lower resolution streaming, intermittent connection loss due to lower beam power, and the potential for higher latency from live event to video broadcast.

ISSUE THREE

Sudden power loss or equipment damage causes a piece of equipment to be irreparably taken out of network leading to loss of either video encoding capabilities or transmission capabilities.

Having several spare key components available and pre-configured to hot-swap into the network should the need arise to avoid interruptions in connectivity or broadcast capabilities. These extra units will be stored near their respective active counterparts in climate-controlled units. They will have been configured to almost identical specifications outside of potential changes during the event, which can be addressed upon replacement.

ISSUE FOUR

Access to the network should only be allowed to those who have purchased it or are network administrators.

There will be a built-in 2FA/MFA integration within the smartphone application that verifies the user is within the rights given by the facility to access streamed content. This will be established using DUO or another similar company and interfacing it within the Ubiquiti network parameters. Administrators will have designated structures with local access directly to the network through workstations and pre-configured laptops for use throughout the event grounds. Each administrative personnel requiring access to admin portals on a smartphone will be given a phone that comes with connections pre-established and verified as well as a 2FA/MFA dongle that will read out a code for each access attempt to prevent external access should the phone be lost or stolen.

16 PAGE X ++
03
04 01

ISSUE FIVE

Unwarranted or malicious access.

Combined with the above 2FA/MFA implementations, a verification code will be printed at the bottom of each receipt that customers will have to enter to set up their viewing portal account within the application. These codes are one time use and expire 15 minutes after dispense time. Should a customer need a new code due to time not inputting the code within those first 15 minutes, they should bring their receipt and phone to a customer service associate who will generate a new code and assist with the initial access and account setup prior to the guest continuing throughout the venue.

ISSUE SIX

Spotty coverage in parts of the venue.

Explore the venue and establish the working area for the needed connection and verify what materials the temporary and permanent structures would consist of to ensure adequate transmission through all materials present in the construction of the various stadiums and vending areas throughout. There will also be extra transmission towers that can be enabled should they be needed, or higher power beaming allowed as transmission becomes slow or spotty. On top of the hardware side, the monitoring software will be encouraged to verify connectivity throughout the venue and allow real-time network stability and performance monitoring. This includes monitoring all connections to detect any unintended disconnections from the mobile viewing platform and spikes in throughput patterns outside the bounds of typical viewership.

ISSUE SEVEN

Sudden loss of coverage/speed.

The hardware being used will be able to ramp up signal strength significantly should the need to do so arise. The venue will be scouted and mapped out ahead of time, accounting for as much wiggle room as possible in the initial signal strength and computational power of the individual equipment pieces to allow others to pick up the slack momentarily. During the period of lower output and its subsequent adjustments, technicians can enact other procedures that include diagnosing the cause of the coverage or speed loss and installing backup equipment or fixing the standing equipment if possible.

ISSUE EIGHT

Network implementation does not support promised access.

Through very generous estimates and strenuous calculations, we have determined which pieces of hardware – and the associated software – to install at the venue to provide seamless access to all involved at the event. This includes the capabilities of all access levels of viewing as well as uninterrupted network access for general and administrative use. This was completed using the Ubiquiti UISP Design Center, which allows for a designation of the event space and provides all calculations of throughput and signal strength throughout the venue.
