Project Overview

We're here to: Cultivate collection. Revitalize storage. Enhance analysis.

Metis Data Group

While your current IT system in Scranton, PA, is advanced by most metrics, it lacks the processing robustness needed to compete effectively with the more established competitors in your market. And while concession is a necessary consideration for your company and its future, it is NOT part of Metis Data Group's solution. Our paramount focus is optimizing your data, including how you collect it, how you store it, and how you'll make sense of it.

FLIX2YOU BUILD | 2022

Our paramount focus is optimizing your data.

Flix2You has invested a substantial sum of money in seeking a data solution. As it stands, you can acquire data, but you lack the scalable infrastructure necessary to leverage it.

With 20,000 unique daily hits and a user base exceeding nearly 20 million, Flix2You finds itself at a critical juncture as you seek to expand operations and offerings. Flix2You's primary goal is to expand operations and offerings to combat recent user stagnation and increase revenue streams; however, you cannot formulate an adequate business strategy for moving forward. As a result, you’ve solicited several organizations to blueprint a data repository that affords easier querying and implements analytics. As the following infographic details, you hope that understanding your existing data will drive business decisions forward:

Analyze Data

Strategize

Expand Ops

Revenue

Our concerns are that you currently lack analytics for existing data, lack efficient collection methods for new data, and lack a scalable infrastructure to handle future back-end business demands. Additionally, we posit the following hypothetical: what if your existing data provides little to no insight? Therefore, we at Metis believe your situation calls for a more robust, cloud-based approach: a two-factor implementation that grants Flix2You the analytical capability for business strategy while scaling your infrastructure for future demand and enhanced offerings.

To provide perspective, Netflix uses AWS for nearly all its computing and storage needs, including databases, analytics, recommendation engines, video transcoding, and more—hundreds of functions that use more than 100,000 server instances on AWS (Amazon, n.d.-f). We believe implementing these same utilities will not only allow Flix2You to compete with Netflix in terms of market share, but supersede them in the decades to come.

Metis Data Group

FLIX2YOU BUILD | 2022

Project Management: Scope of Work

Please Note: All intellectual property related to our work with Flix2You will be assigned to Flix2You All legal fees required by the deployment of our cloud solution will be borne directly by Flix2You. Metis will be responsible for all expenses incurred by Metis employees in connection to our work with Flix2You, except for reasonable travel and other out-of-pocket expenses pre-approved by Flix2You.

Metis Data Group

FLIX2YOU BUILD | 2022

While our fees might appear high at first glance, we offer the best value possible for our clients. Our proposal is based off the following conceptual cloud architecture that offers Flix2You a crucial and cost-effective competitive edge necessary for achieving a high user growth rate.

Project Management: Why Cloud? We chose a cloud infrastructure solution for the following reasons: Less upfront capital investment is required compared to an in-house solution. Cloud infrastructure providers, such as Amazon Web Services, offer their on-demand services on a pay-as-you-go basis Cloud infrastructure is physically located in multiple geographical locations. Hardware failure in one geographical zone would mean an automatic failover to another separate geographical zone High level of failure tolerance because data is automatically replicated across different servers in multiple geographically separate areas Fast dynamic provisioning of cloud resources. Software and hardware can be automatically scaled up or down according to Flix2You usage requirements

Project Management: Why AWS?

With over 400+ Media and Entertainment partners, AWS brings 15 years of experience supporting transformation for leading industry customers such as Comcast, Discovery Inc., Disney, FORMULA 1, FOX, HBO Max, Hulu, Method Studios, MGM, The National Football League, Netflix, Nikkei, Peacock, Sky, TF1, Untold Studios, ViacomCBS, and Weta Digital. We at Metis hold that AWS provides the infrastructure backbone that Flix2You both desire and so desperately need. You want to grow your future. Let Metis give you the opportunity.

Metis Data Group

FLIX2YOU BUILD | 2022

AWS for Media & Entertainment aligns the most purpose-built media and entertainment capabilities of any cloud—including nine AWS Services, 11 Solutions, dedicated appliances, and more than 400 AWS Partners—against five solution areas to help customers transform the industry: Content Production; Media Supply Chain & Archive; Broadcast; Direct-to-Consumer & Streaming; and Data Science & Analytics.

Project Management: Projected Annual Budget Projected Annual Budget for Technology and Development Based on Netflix as a suitable comparison and given Flix2You’s smaller user base, we estimate that the annual technology and development costs would be USD 10.40 per subscriber. We base this information off the growth rate of Netflix's annual technology and development expenses as a whole and per subscriber, provided for reference in the following:

Netlfix T/D Dev (in billions) Netflix Paid Subscribers (in millions) Netflix Annual T/D per Subscriber 200 150 100 50 0

2014

2015

2016

2017

2018

2019

If Flix2You had a subscriber-equivalent of 3.65m subscribers, which we consider as prudent and reasonable given Flix2You’s 20m user base, that would mean an annual Flix2You technology and development project expense of USD 37.96m. This is based off the similar growth rate depicted by Netflix above after they ported a majority of their services to AWS.

$10.40 Metis Data Group

The annual technology and development costs would be USD 10.40 per subscriber.

FLIX2YOU BUILD | 2022

From 2014 to 2019, Netflix's annual technology/development expenses increased 236.98% During the same time, their number of paid subscribers increased 206.76% Meaning, in 5 years, Netflix's annual t/d expenses per subscriber only increased 9.89%

Project Management: Timeline & Gantt Chart Performance goals are a good way to monitor and measure progress. We estimate that we need 18-months from proposal to completion, given the dedicated Metis team listed above. Should you require a shorter or longer timeframe, we remain confident that we will be able to meet your needs. We also offer a 6-month warranty period to rectify any edge cases that might crop up during the actual performance.

User Analysis The Metis Data Group is pleased to offer the following user analysis. What will follow is a comprehensive high-level overview of what we recommend to be how Flix2You organizes the employees that will manage the newly formed database solution. The following recommendations are based on industry norms and best practices and are rooted in our understanding of how Flix2You wants to grow. First, we recommended that Flix2You embrace parts of the Agile Methodology, specifically the discipline of Scum and the organization it brings. Agile brings about a world of change but within it and within Scrum come advantages that will allow Flix2You to more effectively and efficiently operate within its respective market. For example, Scrum allows for teams to be able to do the following: Clearly define objectives Achieve success via delivering objectives/meeting goals Identify backlogs and plan for work to be done in later Sprints.

Accurately plan work into Sprints Meet daily to discuss roadblocks and ask for help Conducts Sprint retrospectives to analyze process and automate where possible

Metis Data Group

FLIX2YOU BUILD | 2022

These factors will lead to Flix2You better-utilizing resources, understanding customer feedback, and implementing solutions to grow their business. This, combined with Amazon Web Services' tools, creates an added value for the overall project and maximizes efficiency.

The following table is a recommendation we would like to make to Flix2You. These prescribed measures allow for security, integrity, and accessibility of both current and new Flix2You employees:

Organization of Data The Flix2You system contained the fields and entities necessary to collect relevant data for its needs. Still, now that the company is moving fully to an online model—a la Netflix—it needs a schema modified for the adjusted environment. For example, renting and buying movies would be fully digital with an online model. As a result, the customer would not need to visit a brick-and-mortar location to select a film or return upon completion since all rentals either digitally expire or return automatically at the end of the rental period without a customer needing to drop off a physical disk. On the other hand, the old schema contained several fundamental issues holding it back; for instance, a previous_transaction_id field that provided no use, pulling preceding transactions for either individual customers or a set time period already providing data. Combining these various changes and flaws with the fact that service users will have a subscription option, which will provide discounts on all movies rented or sold, much about the current schema needs to be changed. The Metis Data Group elected to take a normalized approach to the redesign. After removing extraneous fields and adding new ones to account for the digital environment, the resulting scheme was reduced to the 3rd normal form.

Metis finds this a worthy trade-off, as later sections will cover the cloud-based logistics that make using this system less intensive than the previous one.

Metis Data Group

FLIX2YOU BUILD | 2022

As a result, the new system will have no repeating groups of data, no partial dependencies, and no transitive dependencies. While this means that the schema intrinsically reduces the data redundancy and the chance for data anomalies, running queries using join operations will still require many resources.

Specifically, the Amazon Web Services Solutions Architect and Database Core Team, as seen in the following, will handle the implementation and management of all AWS-related sources, including backup, recovery, security, data-loading, and any other operative functions:

Database Administration: Backup & Recovery

In terms of Database Backup and Recovery, we propose multiple redundancies using AWS Database Migration Service, existing on-premise infrastructure, and AWS Aurora in a primary master - secondary master - slave configuration to comply with ACID requirements.

02

03

04

Additionally, AWS' primary Backup & Restore dashboard allows for synchronous backups without pulling bandwidth and resources from day-to-day business activities. With dataprotected transfer services piled with redundant utilities for the safe and effective transfer, we can ensure Flix2You will maintain "scalable, durable, and secure dataprotection solutions (Amazon, n.d.-e)." With Flix2You, Metis will implement AWS Database Migration Service to perform continuous data replication. Continuous data replication has a multitude of use cases including Disaster Recovery instance synchronization, geographic database distribution (mentioned above), and Dev/Test environment synchronization. You can use DMS for both homogeneous and heterogeneous data replications for all supported database engines. Additionally, the source or destination databases can be located in your own premises outside of AWS, running on an Amazon EC2 instance. Therefore, as an additional redundancy for backup and recovery, Metis will integrate Flix2You's current infrastructure and servers into AWS's Data Migration and Recovery service through another clone-slave implementation. Upon every AWS data porting backup, which occurs every night at 11:59 AM, an additional backup of all Flix2You's data will clone itself to a series of RAID 50 configured drives. As mentioned above, integrating continuous data replication piggybacks any "instance" with instant synchronization, and will automatically backup upon commencement and close of each instance as well. AWS Database Migration Service can be used to migrate data both into and out of the cloud for development purposes as well. There are two common scenarios. The first is deploying development, test, or staging systems on AWS to take advantage of the cloud’s scalability and rapid provisioning. This lets developers and testers use copies of real production data, then copy updates back to the on-premises production system. The second scenario is when development systems are on-premises (often on personal laptops) and you migrate a current copy of an AWS Cloud production database to these on-premises systems—either once or continuously. You can avoid disruption to existing DevOps processes while ensuring the up-to-date representation of your production system.

Metis Data Group

FLIX2YOU BUILD | 2022

01

AWS Aurora has in-built load balancing and query routing capabilities (Amazon, n.d.-c). Additionally, read queries are not handled by the master nodes and are governed by the read-only slave nodes spread across different geographical areas to minimize disruption risk. Write queries are handled by the secondary master, with any changes being synchronously reflected in the primary master. The primary master acts as the "source of truth," with all nodes synching accordingly. Should the primary master fail, the secondary master would take over as the primary master and handle the query at hand (Patel, 2022).

Database Administration: Data Access & Security First, let's discuss secure transfers and backups before delving into access rights and server hardening AWS Backup & Restore offers backup protection with "data center and network architecture" built for security-sensitive organizations (Amazon, n.d.-a). This means any lingering consumer metadata is hardened against attack and theft. In addition, with B&R functionality, Flix2You can manage access, detect irregular activity, encrypt data, and perform audits with AWS Security services. You control where your data is stored, who can access it, and what resources your organization is consuming at any given moment. The buck doesn't stop there. AWS Security Services will afford Flix2You the ability to meet "core security and compliance requirements," such as data locality, protection, and confidentiality, with our comprehensive services and features (Amazon, n.d.-e). Additionally, the AWS Identity and Access Management utility affords superior identity and access controls "combined with continuous monitoring for near realtime security information (Amazon, n.d.-e). Furthermore, this allows the Database Administrator to manage clearance levels to set user- access restrictions—both inhouse and consumer exterior—or edit structural data within Flix2You's core database.

With server hardening, regional data filtration, and automated manual security tasks against attacks like DDoS or Ransomware, Flix2You can effectively divert focus to data analytics, business innovation, and scaling. Therefore, ever-working towards their goal of becoming the preeminent movie rental company in the marketplace.

Metis Data Group

FLIX2YOU BUILD | 2022

Looking at our User Analysis, only certain people have access to the database, and thus, we can allow them certain privileges while accessing the data.

Database Administration: Dataload & Migration Since our proposed implementation replaces Flix2You's current operational database, let us discuss how Metis plans to migrate your existing database data to the AWS Cloud, specifically with AWS for Media & Entertainment's purpose-driven Database Migration Service, and how it may or may not impact daily operations. First, AWS Database Migration Service (AWS DMS) helps you migrate databases to AWS quickly and securely. The source database remains fully operational during the migration, minimizing downtime to applications that rely on the database. Since all data changes to the source database (Flix2You) that occur during the migration are continuously replicated to the target (AWS EC3), the source database maintains full functionality during migration with virtually zero impact on current or future daily operations. After the database migration is complete, Flix2You's database will remain synchronized with the source for as long as you or your dedicated Data Architect chooses, allowing you to switch over the database at a convenient time or, in Flix2You's case, remain configured as a redundant backup (discussed in Backup & Recovery). Therefore, Flix2You, your services, and your intranet will remain fully operational.

But how does this work? And as we touched on previously, why AWS? AWS is simple to use, is reliable, supports a variance of utilities, and is low cost. Once our on-prem team's assessment and subsequent design wireframe and proof-of-concept occur, our Data Architect and accompanying engineers will begin the migration with just a few clicks in the AWS Management Console. Once the migration has started, the DMS manages all the complexities of the migration process, including automatically replicating data changes that occur in the source database during the migration process. Even more impressive, the AWS Solutions Architect, DevOps, and Core Team members Metis hires and trains for Flix2You will be advanced enough to continue modernizing your data.

Metis Data Group

FLIX2YOU BUILD | 2022

The redundancy is achieved through the AWS DMS Fleet Advisor, a core utility of Metis' migration, which allows you to construct a DMS task for ongoing replication. An ongoing replication task keeps your source and target databases in sync. Once set up, the ongoing replication task will continuously apply source changes to the target with minimal latency. All DMS features, such as data validation and transformations, are available for any replication task.

Once on-site, your dedicated Metis team will do the following: Build Migration Plan Once on-site, we will build your migration plan, which will take us hours with AWS DMS, versus weeks or months without. We will utilize the DMS Fleet Advisor to Automatically build database and analytics inventories, analyze them, and create a customized migration plan with virtually no downtime.

Commence Proof-of-Concept Once devising your migration plan, Metis will install the SQL Drivers and AWS Schema Conversion utilities within your local infrastructure, configure your Microsoft SQL Server Source Database, Confiture your Aurora MySQL Target Database, and use the AWS SCT to Convert the SQL Server Schema to Aurora MySQL.

This final migration phase has us create an AWS DMS Replication Instance, AWS DMS Source and Target Endpoints, and create and run your AWS DMS Migration Task. We'll perform a bulk of analytics at this stage on your current stored data, then cut over to Aurora MySQL. to conclude and test your series of migrations. Of course, the project is not over yet. We'll engineer new data collection strategies, optimize information flow between endpoints (including backup), and continue to train your new and current staff at every step of the way.

Database Administration: Consumer Data & Privacy We engineered a privacy policy to better serve those concerned with how their' Personally identifiable information (PII) is being used online. As used in U.S. privacy law and information security, PII is information that can be used on its own or with other information to identify, contact, or locate a single person or identify an individual in context. Please read our Private Policy—included in our Legal Issues section—to understand how we collect, use, protect, or handle consumer data and PII. Insofar as tracking analytics and cookies, these utilities are integral to data acquisition and consumer analytics. Cookies are small files that a site or its service provider transfers to your computer's hard drive through your Web browser (if you allow) that enables the site's or service provider's systems to recognize your browser and capture and remember certain information. For instance, we use cookies to help us remember and process the items in your shopping cart. They are also used to help us understand your preferences based on previous or current site activity, enabling us to provide improved services. We also use cookies to help us compile aggregate data about site traffic and site interaction to offer better site experiences and tools in the future.

Furthermore, when ordering or registering on Flix2You's website, you may be asked to enter your name, email address, mailing address, phone number, credit card information, or other details to help you with your experience. We suggest collecting this information to enhance the consumer experience on Flix2You's website and ensure the steady and consistent acquisition of pertinent and passive data for analytics, thus enhancing revenue streams.

Dashboard & Analytics With Flix2You maintaining such a wide range of data and Information, a database dashboard will be necessary to sort this Information into categories and visual informatics that can be analyzed and reviewed to make the best business decisions for maximum growth. This Information will include business trends such as revenue and sales data and customer demographics. In addition, all data will be easily exportable to an Excel spreadsheet or PDF (Portable Document Format) document to print and use for presentations and executive meetings (iNetSoft, n.d.). By analyzing data like this, business decisions can increase revenue and lower costs. For example, by analyzing digital rental sales data combined with demographics such as the average age of users, executives can determine if entering the physical video game business is fiscally worthy of investing. Further decisions can be made from this to improve experiences either way. This could include determining ways to manage the costs of physical rentals to increase revenue. Should staying digital only be determined to be the best option for the company, routing potential funds from the physical side could help improve the user's digital experience, such as smart device apps and the Flix2You website. Our proposal suggests the use of a third-party option. We decided the best choice for our setup would be the Sisense Fusion dashboard system. Fusion is a data visualization business intelligence utility fully compatible with cloud-based databases such as those hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS). The connection of this dashboard with Flix2You's database on the AWS cloud requires a slight adjustment to the code and then deciding which metrics will be displayed in various forms on the homepage.

This dashboard will display a wide variety of key performance indicators (KPIs) on a range of timeframes, including daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly. By displaying data separated by these timeframes, areas not meeting business expectations can be identified, and improvement plans can be developed (Caldwell, 2022). This Information will be displayed through various visuals such as pie charts, bar graphs, change-over-time graphs, and more. In addition, daily and weekly sales data can be used to develop business decisions to improve sales over slower periods, such as promotional times.

Sisense also hosts an entire suite of Add-Ons, which they call "Plug-Ins," that allows customization based on company needs. All of these meet Sisense's Add-Ons certification process. Sisense Fusion is currently used in various industries, including Verizon, Skullcandy, Instacart, Air Canada, Philips Healthcare, and more (Sisense, 2022).

Sales metrics and Information will also need to be broken down further and displayed within our dashboard. This data will be further broken into categories such as "movie genres." This Information can improve marketingto specific users to furtherincrease sales and increase and improve the use of the Flix2You platform. Are aspects of the Flix2You platformtoo difficult or confusing to use, and can they be improved?

Figure 1: Sample Sisense Fusion Dashboard displaying various metrics through multiple methods.

Using the updated Flix2You EntityRelationship Diagram (ERD) to the right, we can determine which data will be displayed on our Database Dashboard. This Information is communicated through charts and analytical methods discussed earlier in this section. We've preselected a choice of metrics that the database dashboard will display. These include sales revenue over various periods of Figure 2: Flix2You updated ERD time, the number of views on the platform over multiple periods, AND the current number of active and inactive users. Should other metrics be desired by the Flix2You management team, this dashboard can be customized. Below are the SQL Commands to pull the corresponding data for the metrics we preselected:

Sales Revenue per Date Range SELECT SUM(transaction_amount) FROM financial_transactions WHERE transaction_date BETWEEN ‘xxxx-xx-xx’ AND ‘xxxx-xx-xx’;

Number of Views per Date Range Number of Total/Active/Inactive Users SELECT COUNT(customer_id) FROM customers; SELECT customer_id FROM customers WHERE EXISTS(SELECT customer_id FROM customers WHERE customer_id = customer_rentals.item_rental_id HAVING COUNT(item_rental_id) > 1); SELECT customer_id FROM customers WHERE EXISTS(SELECT customer_id FROM customers WHERE customer_id = customer_rentals.item_rental_id HAVING COUNT(item_rental_id) < 1);
