In today’s digital world it’s easier than ever to buy something, share an experience, or find an answer through a search engine that sometimes is too good to be true. As a credit union that serves over 20,000 members nationwide, we make it a priority to not only protect our members’ financial information, but also help members protect themselves from potential threats. With scams on the rise and data breaches that reach epic proportions, we’d like to leave you with some helpful suggestions as we all navigate these waters together.
The website annualcreditreport. com permits one free report from each of the three credit bureaus once a year.
What’s in it for me? Your credit score is a strong indicator of your ability to pay back debt in a timely fashion, and a good credit score will help you get better loan rates on things like cars or a home. Learning about your credit score may also help you identify potentially fraudulent use of your personal information. Know where you stand with your credit score.
Many of us use our personal information to perform transactions online.
OK, so what? Personal information, such as your bank account number or social security number, is confidential and unique to you. Do not provide personal information over the phone or internet, unless you initiated the contact. Otherwise, you risk becoming a victim of fraud.
Looking to do a home repair or improvement project? Learn about your contractor first.
Why? A home improvement project requires an investment of your time and money, and you want to be sure that your contractor is legitimate. Start by calling the Better Business Bureau at (800) 8285000 and also request a written contract from the contractor.
Tax season is around the corner, and it’s a popular time for scammers.
How so? In recent years there’s been a spike in phone calls from IRS impersonators requesting payment, debit or credit card numbers or other sensitive information. Do not give out any information and hang up immediately. Remember that the IRS will never call to demand immediate payment and will typically mail you a bill first. Report the call either on the IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting
(https://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_ report_scam.shtml) webpage or call the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at (800) 366-4484.
If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the appropriate authorities.

Choosing between different
IRAs
IRA accounts are not JUST for retirement anymore. Are you ready for the new tax season? Are you ready to prosper in the coming year and beyond?
Review this useful information to help you make your decisions and open your new IRA account(s) with Ukrainian FCU. Decide which IRA suits you best. Compare Roth vs. Traditional IRAs. Both have unique features. In addition to potential tax advantages you can benefit from excellent rates which UFCU offers on IRA savings and share certificate products. You can earn up to 2.25% APY (Annual Percentage Yield).
Can I contribute?
Roth IRA
You are eligible to contribute if you earn compensation or file a joint tax return with a spouse who earns compensation, and your modified adjusted gross income is less than or within the defined limits.
Traditional IRA
You are eligible to contribute if you earn compensation or file a joint tax return with a spouse who earns compensation and you are under age 70 ½.
Can I take an income tax deduction for my contribution?
Roth IRA
No. Roth contributions are not tax-deductible.
Traditional IRA
Depends on your marital and tax-filing status, your MAGI and whether you or your spouse participate in an employer sponsored retirement plan such as 401K. You may be eligible to deduct your full contribution or part of it.
How
much can I contribute?
Roth IRA & Traditional IRA
For 2016, 2017 and 2018, your total contributions to all of your traditional and Roth IRAs cannot be more than: $5,500 ($6,500 if you're age 50 or older), or your taxable compensation for the year, if your compensation was less than this dollar limit.
What are the benefits?
Roth IRA
Your contributions grow tax-free. You fund a Roth with after-tax dollars, meaning you've already paid taxes on the money you put into it. When you withdraw at retirement, you pay no taxes.
Traditional IRA
You can make annual tax-deductible contributions. However earnings are not tax free.
When can I withdraw the money?
Roth IRA
You can withdraw contributions you made to your Roth IRA anytime, tax- and penaltyfree. You may have to pay taxes and penalties on earnings in your Roth IRA if you have had your Roth IRA less than five years.
Traditional
IRA
Once you turn age 59 1/2, you can withdraw any amount from your IRA without having to pay the 10 percent penalty. But regular income tax will still be due on each withdrawal. IRA distributions are not required until after age 70 1/2.
Penalties
Since the IRA is a retirement investment, there are certain penalties if you take out your money before retirement age. With the traditional IRA, you face a 10% penalty on top of the taxes owed for any withdrawals before age 59½. The same requirement holds true for the Roth IRA except under certain specific circumstances: as long as you’ve held the Roth IRA for five years and reached age 59½, you can withdraw your money penaltyfree. You’ll only owe taxes on any earnings from the account, since you funded it with pre-tax money.
For both types of IRA’s the qualifications for possible early withdrawal penalty exceptions include:
Disability, certain health insurance costs, certain medical expenses, higher education expenses, first time homebuyer, beneficiary distributions, military reservist distributions.
The Bottom Line
The Roth and traditional IRAs are easy to set up. Both plans have their advantages and disadvantages. Know the rules and consider which option can work best for you. Check the IRS.gov website for regular changes and updates.

In order to improve our member service experience and communication channels, we implemented an upgraded phone system.
What changed?
• We set up a call center to ensure that callers reach a live person each time they dial our toll-free number
• Callers are greeted with a simplified menu, so that they may be directed to the appropriate department
• Our phone extensions changed from a 3-digit number to a 4-digit number. After dialing our toll-free number or local branch office numbers and when prompted, please dial ‘1’ and then the extension of the person you're trying to reach.
We appreciate all of the feedback we’ve received over the past few months, and we thank everyone for their patience as we all transition to the new system.
A fresh new look
In case you haven’t already noticed, we revamped our website and also moved from rufcu.org to ukrainianfcu.org.
The new website was the result of months of planning and developing. We hope that you like the new look and functionality! Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to improve the online member experience.

A Corporate Challenge
