In 2019, we saw a year full of accomplishments. 2,291 individuals decided to join our credit union. Since 1953, UFCU has built a family of more than 22,000 members. Five new common bond organizations have joined our field of membership last year.
Through your trust in our financial institution, UFCU has exceeded the $250 million asset milestone and, at the end of 2019, has grown to more than $270 million in assets, allowing the credit union to provide its members with loans and mortgages for all their needs. Prudent financial management and control over operating expenses has allowed the credit union to make a healthy net income of $1.8 million, that was added to UFCU’s capital position.
Ukrainian Federal Credit Union employees helped 149 families to finance their homes last year. The credit union also provided eight loans to our religious communities to finance their houses of worship. We financed business equipment for 392 of our selfemployed members and disbursed many other loans for various financial needs of our members.
We opened two new branches – in Rancho Cordova, CA, and in Matthews, NC. The first one is the result of our growth in the Sacramento area, where we see a great number of potential members. The Matthews branch is in the Charlotte area, where many people from other states, including our currently existing members, have relocated in recent years. In addition to the new branches, two of our already operating offices were relocated to more appropriate sites in 2019 - our Citrus Heights and Portland branches. These four undertakings required a lot of work by our employees – thank you to all who were involved in these extensive projects.
UFCU total assets grew by 9.5% in 2019, and the credit union continued to be stable, healthy and well-capitalized. This was confirmed by federal examiners during the scheduled examination in 2019. Our records have also been reviewed by external and internal auditors, who have acknowledged that we lawfully operate in accordance with applicable rules and regulations.
In tandem with rapid developments in technology, we are proactively investing time and resources into convenient and secure e-channels, that allow our members to use UFCU services anytime and anywhere from the convenience of their PCs, phones, tablets, and voice assistants. As of today, over 12,000 members use our online banking system, over 9,000 members have downloaded our mobile app, and thousands of checks are deposited monthly by our members using their mobile phones. In 2019, we implemented enhancements to allow our business members to apply for commercial loans online and are now using electronic signature systems so our members can sign loan or deposit documents anywhere. Cybersecurity and confidentiality of your information remain our highest priority, and our management pays special attention to this important area.
The credit union and our employees continued to stay engaged in our community. Our employees attended and volunteered at many community events. The credit union and our Foundation provided support and sponsorships to many organizations, as well as scholarships to our student members, as detailed in the Community Relations Committee and UAC Foundation reports. Continuing our strategic path to improving customer service at our credit union, we conducted several surveys of our membership and our employees and created action plans for improvements in several areas. As a result, in 2020, we are planning additional training and development for all staff to make sure that members are getting the highest level of personalized service at UFCU!
In conclusion we thank our Board and committee members, our employees and all our members – without whose trust and dedication, none of these achievements would have been possible. We invite all of you to celebrate our collective accomplishments, and to continue supporting our credit union, so we can create economic opportunities for our UFCU community.
