Dr. Dale Godsoe Chair, Board of Governors

O God, who hast taught us by thy holy Apostle to hold fast that which is good; we give thee humble thanks for all our benefactors, and for the lives and good examples of all who have truly served thee here, beseeching thee to make us worthy to follow in their steps. Keep us under the protection of thy good Providence. Bless us as thou alone canst bless; prosper us as thou alone canst prosper; guard us as thou alone canst guard. Let not the wicked prevail against our habitation, but let our University stand as a fortress of Truth and Purity and Right. Take from us all that may hinder godly union and concord, that we may with one mind and one mouth glorify thee. REMARKS BY THE PRESIDENT:

Prof. William Lahey

REMARKS BY THE PRESIDENT DALHOUSIE UNIVERSITY:

Dr. Richard Florizone

ANTHEM: And Did Those Feet In Ancient Time And did those feet in ancient time Walk upon England’s mountains green? And was the holy Lamb of God On England’s pleasant pastures seen? And did the countenance divine Shine forth upon our clouded hills? And was Jerusalem builded here Among those dark satanic mills? Bring me my bow of burning gold! Bring me my arrows of desire! Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold! Bring me my chariot of fire! I will not cease from mental fight, Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand, Till we have built Jerusalem In this our green and pleasant land. Words: William Blake (1757-1827) Music: Jerusalem, C. Hubert H. Parry (1848-1918)

The History of King’s College University education in Canada began with King’s. Founded in 1789 in Windsor, Nova Scotia, by the Rev. Charles Inglis, King’s was the first university in English Canada to accept and graduate students and to receive a royal charter. Its roots lie in the United States, where it was founded in 1756 in New York City. After the American Revolution, those who supported the revolution stayed behind and re-established King’s College as Columbia University. Those who remained loyal to George III moved to Canada. King’s is the oldest English-speaking Commonwealth university outside the United Kingdom and received its royal charter from George III in 1802. A Special Relationship with Dalhousie University In 1920, a fire burned the main building to the ground at King’s, Windsor. A grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York allowed King’s to rebuild, not in Windsor, but in Halifax, where it entered into an association with Dalhousie University, the largest university in the Maritimes. Since then, King’s students have been able to take courses at both King’s and Dalhousie, giving them access to more academic programme choices than at any other university in Atlantic Canada. Why Encaenia ? A ceremony rooted in the traditions of Oxford University, Encaenia comes from the Greek word, meaning beginning or commencement. The term has been used since the founding of King’s in 1789. The King’s graduation ceremony has not changed greatly over the years, although the use of Latin has given way to English, apart from the conferring of Journalism and honorary degrees. The President of Dalhousie University confers arts, music, and science degrees, while degrees in journalism and honorary degrees are conferred by the Chancellor of the University of King’s College. The Presidents of Dalhousie and King’s confer together the joint degrees of Contemporary Studies, Early Modern Studies, and History of Science and Technology as well as graduate degrees in Journalism. Academic Regalia The Chancellor wears a gown made from black silk that is of the pattern and trimmed with the lace and ornaments that would be customary for a chancellor’s gown at a British university. A black velvet trencher cap with a gold tassel and gold lace edging is worn with this gown. The President and Vice-Chancellor wears his or her own doctoral gown, bonnet and hood, over which is placed the university chain of office. In the form of a medallion suspended from a sterling silver chain, the arms of the university are worked in sterling silver base plate. Doctors wear an Oxford pattern doctoral gown made from scarlet cloth and faced, down each side in front and one the sleeves, with silk of the colour distinctive to the degree. A black velvet Oxford pattern doctoral bonnet is worn with this gown. Other graduates wear the gown and cap prescribed by the University of Oxford for corresponding degrees.

The hoods for the doctoral degrees are made in the Oxford full shape. The hoods for all other degrees are made in the Oxford simple shape. King’s Coat of Arms The old crest was designed by King’s students in 1870 and combined the Royal Arms with those of Oxford University, Nova Scotia, and the Diocese of Nova Scotia. In 1959, the King’s board of governors was alerted to the fact that the crest had never been officially sanctioned by the College of Arms or any other recognized heraldic authority. In 1964, the College of Arms in London granted the university a new coat of arms. The crown to the left of the Pascal Lamb represents Oxford University, on which King’s is modelled. The Pascal Lamb represents the Fredericton Diocese. The St. Andrew’s Cross (with the pastoral staff and the key) symbolizes the Nova Scotia Diocese. Prince Edward Island, which is part of the Diocese of Nova Scotia, is represented by four green oak trees. Motto The Latin motto of the University of King’s College is Deo Legi Regi Gregi, which translates to “For God, law, crown, and people”. Mace The Reverend Canon West of the Cathedral Church of St John the Divine, New York, designed the Mace of Convocation and commissioned its execution in silver plate by New York craftsman Christopher Den Blaker. It was presented to the University of King’s College at Encaenia in 1984. The wooden shaft is made of solid oak and the crown at the top represents the Canadian monarch. The base that supports the crown bears the shields of the Diocese of Nova Scotia, the Royal Arms, the arms of the University of Oxford, and the arms of Nova Scotia.
