CULTIVATING RELATIONSHIPS: CERH Celebrates 30 Years

in Rural Health opened its doors in Hazard, Ky. Over the past year, a series of videos and articles have highlighted the many people, programs, partnerships and contributions that have enabled the center to remain dedicated to its mission to improve the health

“This is an exciting time for the UK CERH,” said Director Fran Feltner, DNP, MSN, RN, FAAN. “We are looking forward to spotlighting the initiatives that are moving our mission forward, as well as honoring the individuals who had the vision to establish the center and help lay our foundations.”

The UK CERH was established during the January legislative session of 1990 and tasked with addressing health workforce shortages and health disparities in Kentucky’s rural communities. Ten months later, the Center opened its doors in the former Appalachian Regional Healthcare hospital and accepted its first family medicine residency cohort. Shortly thereafter, the center seated their first class of physical therapists, followed by several other degrees being offered close to home, including nursing, social work and medical laboratory science, all of which have resulted in the Center now having more than 1,000 graduates. The vast majority of the UK CERH graduates are working to meet health care needs in rural communities across Kentucky, many of them serving in advanced roles as leaders, mentors and industry experts.

Just a short year after the Center’s opening, the Kentucky Office of Rural Health (KORH) was established by a federal-state partnership authorized by federal legislation. It was a natural fit that the UK CERH would serve as the federally-designated KORH to begin developing a framework to link small rural communities with local, state and federal resources while working toward long-term solutions to rural health issues. The KORH assists clinicians, administrators and consumers in finding ways to improve communications, finances and access to quality health care while ensuring that funding agencies and policymakers are made aware of the needs of rural communities. The KORH administers the Kentucky Student Loan Repayment Program and the National Health Service Corps.

In Spring 2021, they wrote an article entitled, “The COVID-19 Senior Experience in Clinical Leadership & Management; Practicum, Capstone, and Beyond,” in The Journal of Health Administration Education, where they explored the topic through the lenses of the senior year of the program.

In the article, they discuss how they taught through the pandemic and how they have adapted their teaching, even as the world continues to change due to COVID-19. They then reflect on what worked and what didn’t, before further investigating what they could pull from the past 18 months to benefit students in an average year moving forward. Her professor asked her to do what?

“Write a letter.” Her professor asked everyone in class to do just that.

How? The last time Taylor, 21, wrote a letter was when she sent one to her French pen pal in fifth grade. Now, as a senior Human Health Sciences major, she was being asked

by Professor Karen Skaff, RDH, PhD, to write to one of the residents in Lexington’s Homestead Post-Acute Care Center.

Each student would write. Why? Because normally — as in, when there isn’t a pandemic going on — the class would travel to the Acute Care Center for a visit. Sometimes they would even take a trip to New Orleans to give back in similar ways.

But Professor Skaff knew they wouldn’t be able to go due to COVID-19, so they decided to do the next best thing. They would write letters to brighten the patients’ days.

“I actually got really excited,” Taylor said. “I was ready to write.

And I was really happy that Professor Skaff came up with a way for us to still help, even though we couldn’t physically travel to see them.”

OTHER WAYS CHS REACHED OUT TO HELP OVER THE PAST YEAR: CHS STUDENTS HELP UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES GET MASKS Due to the efforts of one College of Health Sciences class, underrepresented and disadvantaged minorities in Lexington were able to receive masks during the height of the pandemic.

During the height of COVID, Jessi Tran and Casey Walsh were enrolled in CLM 453: Cultural Competence, taught by Randa Remer, PhD, LPC, and for one of their semester-long projects, they volunteered with a local program that would help them apply the cultural competence course content to everyday life.

Tran and Walsh chose the Health Equity Action Team (HEAT), supported by Brandi White, PhD, MPH, assistant professor in the Human Health Sciences (HHS) and Clinical Leadership and Management (CLM) programs, and Alisia Sullivan, a UK College of Social Work graduate student and graduate research assistant for CHS. “I’m learning just how hard we have to work. I’ve realized that we’ve got to be a lot more intentional about engaging students and engaging one another. I think that’s something I’ll be trying to do forever.”

specifically African-American women, on the East End of Lexington, and the group seeks to help the community due to the disparities and social determinants of health they face, such as healthcare access, which was exacerbated due to COVID-19.

Tran and Walsh reached out to several local businesses including UK Community Engagement and UK HealthCare to request donations. UK Community Engagement donated 1,000 masks and UK HealthCare donated 100 masks.

“Don’t take things for granted, even for something as basic

as a face mask,” said Tran, a senior CLM major from Hebron, Ky. “This project directly connects the content from CLM 453 to the real world and because of this, I was able to gain a whole new perspective,” said Walsh, a senior CLM major from Trenton, New Jersey.

STUDENTS AID IN COVID RELIEF On multiple occasions, UK PAS students at the Morehead campus have

volunteered with St. Claire Regional Medical Center, sometimes to help deliver the COVID-19 vaccine to the public.

In one instance, Shelley Irving, MSPAS, PA-C, and PAS students

participated in the morning hours, while Joshua Burkhart, MSPAS,

PA-C, and six other students participated in the afternoon. Two of the students were first-year students (not trained to vaccinate) and they helped with rooming patients and delivering patient information.

Four of the students were second-year students who informed patients as well as administered the vaccine.

On the Lexington campus, students helped in other ways.

In our PT students’ second year, they went out on Tuesday clinicals in preparation for their first full-time clinical. Some students worked at

and Inclusivity Committee’s mission is to facilitate

The program anticipates recruiting approximately 20-30 Movement Mentors, with representation across all CHS departments. The funds granted by the CHS DEI will support stipends for two students to lead the program, speakers on health disparities open to the whole CHS community, and equipment and supplies to facilitate the health-based programming.
