HIGHLIGHTS & NOTES DEPARTMENT OF ORAL HEALTH PRACTICE NOTES Dr. Bob Frazer, Interim Chair DIVISION OF COMPREHENSIVE CARE • DMD Student Clinic renovations continued throughout 2018 to complete updates to the second floor DMD Student Clinic. • As part of being selected as a pilot institution for the American College of Prosthodontists (ACP) Digital Dentistry Curriculum, student dentists embraced digital workflows in the clinic to provide such treatments as same-day crowns. See page 18 for more details. • Dr. Cheryl Pearson joined the division part-time to aid student dentists on the clinic floor. DIVISION OF ENDODONTICS • Faculty in the Department of Oral Health Practice have agreed that the department’s focus is on working toward creating an endodontic program, including recruiting a program director for the new offering. • Dr. David DeVito, a UKCD graduate, joined the college to serve as the co-director of the new Diagnosis, Wellness, & Prevention Clinic. Through the new clinic, DMD student dentists are able to work as part of an interprofessional team to care for patients interested in having their oral and overall health addressed in one visit. See page 6 for more details.
• Dr. Craig Miller received the James Little and Don Falace Award for Distinguished Service as a Scientific Reviewer from the Editorial Board of the Oral Medicine section of the journal Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Oral Radiology. • Dr. Thamer Musbah has been named director of the Urgent Care Clinic. Additionally, Dr. Musbah passed the Diplomate examination for the American Board of Oral Medicine, which tests a candidate’s knowledge in the diagnosis and management of oral mucosal abnormalities, pharmacology, radiology, pathology, salivary gland disorders, temporomandibular disorders and facial pain. DIVISION OF PERIODONTOLOGY • Dr. Dolph Dawson has been promoted to associate professor. Dr. Dawson is a certified instructor for the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry and is offering the initial training to periodontal residents. • Congratulations to Dr. Pinar Huja who has joined the University of South Carolina School of Dental Medicine. • Dr. Luciana Shaddox, a heavily funded NIH researcher, joined the division to aid graduate students in fulfilling their research requirements mandated by the university, as well as aid with the graduate clinic. • For additional program highlights, including details on new technology being utilized in the clinic, visit dentistry.uky.edu/periodontology.

• Dr. Rodrigo Fuentealba joined a handful of UKCD faculty who have been selected by the UK Alumni Association to receive UK’s prestigious Great Teacher Award. • Dr. Ahmad Kutkut was named president of the Kentucky section of the American College of Prosthodontists and has worked to establish both an Interdisciplinary Study Club for specialists and a Prosthodontics Study Club for students and residents. DIVISION OF RESTORATIVE DENTISTRY • Dr. Elizangela Bertoli has been promoted to associate professor. • Dr. Howard Roberts, a UKCD graduate, joined the college to serve as division chief, departing from his position of director of Graduate Dental Research at Keesler Air Force Base Air Force Postgraduate Dental School & Clinic. In September, Dr. Roberts will be attending the International Standards Organization meeting with the American Dental Association Standards Committee on Dental Products in Milan, Italy, where he will serve as the United States Expert in dental impression materials.

DEPARTMENT OF ORAL HEALTH SCIENCE NOTES Dr. Ted Raybould, Interim Chair • The department is focused on working toward updating the Turfland clinic location to better support clinical and educational activities of graduate orthodontic care, pediatric dentistry, and the functional and esthetic aspect for facial appearance. DIVISION OF OROFACIAL PAIN • The Orofacial Pain Program provided their 13th Annual Mini Residency Program in Lexington from June 4 to June 8. 2018. The 40-hour continuing education program provides information on TMD, Orofacial Pain, Oral Medicine, Dental Sleep Medicine, Radiology, Chronic Pain Psychology, and Physical Therapy. Program Director, Jeffrey Okeson, DMD, and his team of presenters met 54 participants representing 14 states and 21 countries. Next year’s Annual Mini Residency Program is scheduled for June 3-7, 2019.
• The division is working with the Division of Pediatric Dentistry on plans for Kentucky Clinic renovations. DIVISION OF ORTHODONTICS DIVISION OF ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY • Dr. Ehab Shehata became a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and was also named faculty inductee in the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Chapter at the UK College of Dentistry. • Dr. Joseph Van Sickels was awarded the 2017 William J. Gies Foundation Award for excellence in education at the AAOMS Annual Meeting. DIVISION OF ORAL PATHOLOGY • Dr. Molly Housley Smith, a UKCD graduate, joined the college earlier this year. Dr. Smith is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and a fellow in the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. Smith will serve as division chief. • The college wishes Dr. Douglas Damm, division chief, a fond farewell as he departs for retirement.

DIVISION OF PUBLIC HEALTH DENTISTRY • Dr. Dan Marsh is working as the interim director of the UK Dentistry West Clinic, located in Benton, following the departure of Dr. Dustin Hall. • Dr. Nancy Rigdon joined the Dan Martin Clinic in Madisonville, serving in a faculty position.
OTHER UKCD NOTES • Dr. Kenneth Nusbacher was named director of Institutional Effectiveness for the college. In this role, he will review efforts to establish baseline metrics and collect data regularly to ensure the college is meeting and exceeding various standards related to accreditation and noted in the college’s strategic plan. • Several UKCD staff members presented best practices and innovations at the aXium Consortium Midyear Meeting last fall. Topics included the college’s Patient Access Team, a group of cross-trained staff helping to support multiple clinic areas, and the college’s efforts to introduce a call center to aid incoming patient callers.
• Dr. Gitanjali Pinto-Sinai, was named UKCD’s representative to the ADEA Council of Faculties. Additionally, she will also serve as the college’s assistant dean of Admissions & Student Affairs. • The college wishes Elaine Stafford, UKCD CE Program Coordinator, a fond farewell as she departs for retirement. The Diagnosis, Wellness and Prevention Clinic, located in the Dental Science Building, allows patients to seek care for both their oral and overall health needs in a single location. The clinic is led by a team of interprofessional clinician educators, including Drs. Craig Miller, David DeVito, and Angie Grubbs. The clinic assists patients in achieving their overall health goals through awareness, education, prevention, and implementation of healthy behaviors. In this unique interprofessional setting, faculty and student dentists integrate initial patient care with health assessment, oral diagnosis and medicine, as well as wellness concepts, behavioral medicine, urgent dental care, and public health policy. "For student dentists, this is an opportunity to learn more about the interaction between oral and systemic health and the important role student dentists have as health care providers and communicators to their patients.,” shares DeVito, co-director of the clinic. Nurse practitioner Grubbs plays an integral role in the expanded capabilities of the clinic. Grubbs works closely with faculty and student dentists to assist in initial assessment, treatment planning, and coordination of behavioral health care.
• In April 2018, an additional group of staff members completed the UKCD Staff Leadership Program, presenting to the UKCD leadership several ideas, which were later implemented throughout the college.

Our QUEST TO BE…a college of distinction This academic year marks the Silver Anniversary of the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry. In the Autumn of 1962, under the guidance of a distinguished group of founding faculty, our college was brought into existence. The accomplishments of the college in its brief 25 years are unparalleled in dental education. Dr. David Nash served as the College of Dentistry’s fifth dean between 1987 and 1997. A native of Grayson, Ky., he has the distinction of being the first University of Kentucky College of Dentistry graduate to hold the role of dean within the college. Following his term as dean, Dr. Nash continued his work at UKCD in the Division of Pediatric Dentistry until his retirement in June of 2018. In the September 1987 issue of Perspectives magazine, Dr. Nash discusses how “The Past Challenges the Future,” a concept that is no less true today as the college continues to push forward as it strives to be the No. 1 College of Dentistry.

HELPING TO BRIDGE THE FINANCIAL GAP UKCD continues to attract some of the brightest students applying to dental school. Many joining the college today, like those before them, still face a significant challenge— the expense of dental school. The average indebtedness for Class of 2018 graduates was $243,223, including any undergraduate loans. During 2017-2018, 85 percent of students received some type of financial aid. Financial burden not only prevents students from enrolling at UKCD initially, but also limits their choices following dental school as they consider the additional costs of continuing their education to become a specialist or taking a loan to start their own private practice. Scholarships can ease the financial burden of UKCD students. During 2017-2018, several new scholarships were established, including the following which will be awarded during the 2018- 2019 academic year: Dean Stephanos Kyrkanides and Dr. Sabine Brouxhan Scholarship will recognize the student with the highest Dental Admission Test (DAT) score and GPA rankings entering the firstyear DMD class, starting in Aug. 2018.

Bien Air has established the David Mosimann, Founder of Bien Air, Scholarship for an incoming first-year student. Mosimann was an inventive precision mechanic with a Bien Air representative, very Tom Scarbrough entrepreneurial mindset, who founded Bien-Air in 1959. The company is the largest manufacturer of dental electric motors worldwide. “Bien-Air is proud to fund this scholarship in his name to support the school and the dean’s vision of making UK dental school the most advanced in the country,” said Arthur Mateen, General Manager for Bien-Air USA, Inc. Dr. Robert H. Spedding, a long-time faculty member in pediatric dentistry at UKCD, will be honored through a scholarship in his name. The Dr. Robert H. Spedding Scholarship will be awarded to a rising fourth-year who
has applied for pediatric dentistry residency at UKCD and has an outstanding record of public service. Dr. Jackie Banahan (’79 and ’81 Pediatric Dentistry) established this endowed scholarship to honor Dr. Spedding’s legacy at the school. Others wishing to remember Dr. Spedding, and his impact on students, may also donate to this endowment. Dr. Leslie Horn (’91 and Perio ’93, pictured at right) has enhanced an endowment that she created many years ago to create the Tribute Endowed Scholarship. This scholarship goes to an incoming student who is a Kentucky resident, considered nontraditional, and has financial need. The unique part of this scholarship is that if anyone wishes to honor another person, they can donate to this endowed scholarship and the honoree will be recognized as designated for that level. As noted in last year’s Perspectives, the Class of 2003 has endowed the Joshua T. Sullivan Scholarship. Josh “Sully” Sullivan completed the DMD program in 2003, GPR in 2004 and Pediatric Dentistry in 2009. After establishing a pediatric practice in Georgia, he passed away unexpectedly in November 2014. The Josh T. Sullivan Scholarship will go to a first-year student from Lexington or southern Georgia, or whose undergraduate degree is from Georgetown College. The recipient will also exhibit the characteristics of Sully: a kind person who has a passion for dentistry and likes animals, outdoor activities, sports, and children.
Additional endowments for scholarships were created in 2017 and will be awarded in the future including: Drs. Michael S. Vetter (’98) and Cynthia “Cindy” J. Ratliff-Vetter (’97) from Gainesville, Georgia, have established an endowed scholarship in the name of Dr. Ratliff’s mother. The Linda Looney (Ratliff) Memorial Scholarship is for an incoming DMD student from Eastern Kentucky who has financial need. Drs. Betty Barr (’74 and ’76 Pediatric Dentistry) and Don Kleier (’70) have endowed their previously announced scholarships. The Dr. Vincent A Barr Scholarship is for Kentucky DMD students who have financial need, with
diversity of the student population. The final scholarship is the Dr. Milton Gellin Scholarship to be awarded to Kentucky DMD third- or fourth-year students with above-average leadership and communication skills with patients and families.

a preference for those from Eastern Kentucky. The Dr. Vincent A. Barr Student Development Scholarship is for Kentucky DMD students who have financial need, with a preference for students who contribute to the
Drs. John and Shera Newcomb (’05) of Corbin made an initial pledge to create an endowment to support the College of Dentistry Scholarship. This scholarship has been supported annually by alumni through solicitation phone calls and letters from the University. This endowment will ensure that the scholarship will have consistent support each year. Additional support for the creation of this endowment will be sought.
THE LASTING IMPACT OF FACULTY UKCD faculty are key to shaping the educational experience of students so staying up to date on evolving dental techniques and new state-of-the-art technology is key. Dr. Pil Han (’10), who practices in San Francisco, CA, recognizes the importance of faculty members gaining knowledge to share with students, which is why he established the Pil Han and Family Faculty Development Award to help enable faculty to attend educational experiences with the potential to enhance the college’s curriculum. Dr. Hiroko Nagaoka received the first award and plans to attend national meetings to further develop the college’s Cariology curriculum and Caries Management by Risk Assessment (CAMBRA) implementation. “My parents have always instilled in me the importance of gratitude, and I am eternally grateful for the mentorship

and the education I received at UK...By setting up the Pil Han and Family Faculty Development Award, it will help provide faculty the resources to continue their excellence in their own academic field, and pass on knowledge to the students," shares Dr. Han.

CELEBRATING WITH A GOAL
COLLABORATION TO IMPROVE KENTUCKY’S ORAL HEALTH
Last year marked a significant milestone for both the Class of 1967 and 1982. The Class of ‘67 commemorated 50 years since their graduation from UKCD, while the Class of ‘82 observed their 35th anniversary. Both groups wished to recognize their milestones with a class fundraising effort.
The College of Dentistry has received two gifts from the Delta Dental of Kentucky Foundation to help aid the oral health of Kentuckians. The first gift provides support for the Little Smiles Fund, helping to provide comprehensive dental services to Kentucky’s uninsured children. The college works with local organizations to provide dental care to children who do not currently have access to a dental provider/lack a dental home.
The Class of ’67 continued their efforts, including sending a special mailing to classmates explaining ways to give, toward fully endowing the Class of ‘67 Memorial Fund, a fund established at the group’s 40th reunion. The Memorial Fund provides a scholarship for a student dentist who exemplifies the college’s beliefs of being technically capable, biologically oriented, and socially sensitive. The class was able to raise $30,683 for the fund through their efforts,

moving the fund closer to being able to sustain the current scholarship award amount. Continued support of this endowment ensures that a fundamental philosophy of the school, which guided many of the Class of ‘67 throughout their careers, will continue to be recognized as an integral part of UKCD.
A group of classmates in the Class of ‘82 decided to build on their support of an endowment they created in 1989 to honor the memory of a fellow classmate and Kentucky’s first female oral surgeon, Dr. Sharon Butler. Their goal was to increase the endowment to $100,000 to support a more substantial scholarship award and better impact the financial burden of students who receive the award. Classmates, with help from the Butler family, raised a total of $49,555 in gifts and pledges, bringing the endowment to over $100,000. Rising fourth-year student dentists who are academically superior, demonstrate outstanding clinical skills, and are significantly involved in student and community life, will greatly benefit from these efforts. Thank you to these classes for sharing their celebrations with current and future student recipients of these scholarships.

the prevalence of cavities in the state. Xylitol, a five-carbon sugar polyol, appears to have promising results in reducing dental caries disease and reversing the onset of early caries. The funding providing by Delta Dental will support Phase I of the project. "Delta Dental is proud to partner with UKCD on the Little Smiles Fund and Eliminate Caries pilot project. As a notfor-profit dental insurer, we are committed to improving the oral health of Kentucky and appreciate all the great work that UKCD is doing in the oral health arena. Delta Dental is excited to continue this partnership and support UKCD's future efforts," said Laura Wince, Marketing Manager for Delta Dental of Ky.
MORTENSON DENTAL PARTNERS SUPPORTS STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT Dr. Wayne Mortenson, CEO of Mortenson Dental Partners, has strived throughout his life to blend the best of the past with the improvements of today, while being prepared to embrace future advancements. This goal has guided him as he built Mortenson Dental Partners, and he has seen the same philosophy reflected in UKCD students. “The students coming out of the dental school have solid foundations in traditional dentistry and current best practices. They’re also being exposed to new technology, helping to prepare them for future growth in digital dentistry use, which is exactly what Dean Kyrkanides envisions— preparing students to be dentists
both today and in the future. If our scholarships can help a student to complete the program and enter the field of dentistry with this knowledge and experience, we are glad to assist them as we will all benefit from their addition to the field of dentistry,” stated Dr. Mortenson.
Mortenson Dental Partners has established a scholarship that provides up to 13 annual awards for students who: Are rising fourth-year students; Demonstrate excellent clinical skills and patient interactions; and Display a professional demeanor and behavior. Eleven awards are reserved for Kentucky residents.

DIGITAL EFFORTS CONTINUE TO EXPAND
Since the news in last year’s issue of Perspectives of UKCD’s selection as one of five dental institutions to pilot a new digital curriculum created via efforts of the American College of Prosthodontics (ACP), the college has made tremendous strides in introducing DMD student dentists to digital dentistry. Moving forward, incoming classes will benefit from the introduction of digital tools starting their very first semester and have the ability to refine their skills in subsequent semesters, in order to confidently utilize digital options while providing patient care following graduation.

Before students could get started, a variety of details were addressed including faculty and staff readiness to implement digital training and workflows in the DMD program, facility adjustments, and acquiring necessary software and equipment. Even without the benefit of exposure to hands-on digital training in their first and second years of dental school, before summer break, third-year and fourth-year students were able to utilize digital tools and planning in a variety of cases in the DMD Student Clinic to date, including providing patients with same-day single crowns and helping place dental implants utilizing digitally designed, 3D printed surgical guides.
John-Morgan Correll, class of 2019, says that gaining experience with digital systems is an advantage that will place him ahead of the curve upon graduation. "Digital won't be a foreign concept. I will have an understanding of not only how it works, but how it is done," he said. "I plan to use this knowledge in private practice. If a practice I am interested in joining has already implemented digital dentistry, I can be confident stepping in right out of school." After working as part of a team to complete a guided surgery dental implant case, Dr. Al Primavera, class of 2018, shared, “Being a part of this entire treatment process from planning to the actual surgery day has been one of the best learning

opportunities that I have had at UKCD. I had pieces of knowledge that I had gathered from lecture…but being hands-on and a part of it allowed me to put the pieces together and make sense of it all.” Starting with this fall, first-years will receive initial training on intraoral scanning in order to incorporate scanning into their tooth anatomy and waxing course. With this in place, students will be introduced to the Romexis Compare® software tool, which provides student dentists a self-evaluation option to review how closely their work matches a provided standard. The Compare® software aids the learning process by eliminating subjectivity, allowing for instant feedback, and providing students with
more opportunities to assess their work independently should they desire more practice. Moving on to their second year, students will scan crown preparations on their dentoforms, also using the Compare® software to review how closely their work meets a provided crown preparation standard. Additionally, they will be introduced to chairside CAD software, such as DentalWings, to learn how to design single crowns. Third-years will continue to refine scanning skills in pre-clinical courses and will utilize intraoral scanners in a clinical setting. Student dentists will also be exposed to virtually planning and placing dental implants via a surgical guide, utilizing software such as coDiagnostiX, with the help of technicians and dental
specialists. By their final year, students will be ready to review their patients’ needs and apply their training and technologies as appropriate. Speaking on the college’s introduction to digital tools and techniques to compliment traditional methods, Dr. Richard Windhorn, UKCD Division Chief of Prosthodontics, shares, “Training our DMD students in new digital technology will prepare them for how dentistry will be practiced in the near future. It is paramount that they are equipped with knowledge of the latest practices, techniques and materials when they graduate. The bottom line is that they will be trained to deliver the best possible dental care for their patients in the most efficient manner.”

WHAT ARE THEY DOING NOW? Before graduating in 2017, Drs. Joe Blalock and John Wesley Halliburton worked with several others at UKCD to create and co-host the Life and Dentistry Podcast. A year-plus following graduation, both continue to be involved in the effort in addition to working in private practice in Cookeville, Tenn., with Blalock at Maple Leaf Dentistry and Halliburton a co-owner of Hometown Family Dentistry. Reflecting on balancing the demands of dental school with co-hosting a podcast, Halliburton shares, “In the beginning it was a little difficult with just trying to get it started and off the ground running, but once we all had a rhythm with it, things were a whole lot more streamlined, and didn’t take up as much time. It is just like a lot of things in life, once you get a routine down, things get much simpler.”

HOWARD & NERO RECEIVE DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD The University of Kentucky College of Dentistry Alumni Association awarded the 2017 Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award to Dr. Fred Howard (’82) and Dr. Ben Nero (’67) during last year’s Fall Symposium and Alumni Weekend. The Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award was established to honor alumni of UKCD who exhibit loyalty to the college and excellence and merit in his or her field of our profession of dentistry. The committee also looks for someone who exhibits community leadership and someone who makes both the college and the profession proud. Congratulations to Drs. Howard and Nero on this welldeserved award.

Blalock shares that the podcast allowed the group to experience “opportunities that never would have been possible otherwise…meeting other dentists from across the country…opportunities to continue my education and make connections with like-minded people.” Being able to make a positive impact on others and creating value for their audience are also important to Blalock.
Earlier this year, Dr. Harold Haering (‘81) was appointed Dean of the Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine-Illinois. In addition to working in private practice for 27 years, between graduating from UKCD and serving in his new role as dean, Haering has served in a number of roles including several positions on the Florida Board of Dentistry from 2000 to 2004, as well as serving on the American Dental Association Council on Access, Prevention and Professional Relations and Council on Education and Licensure.

ANNUAL BARRELS & KEGS TASTING AND SILENT AUCTION The UK College of Dentistry Alumni Association held the annual Barrels & Kegs and Silent Auction fundraiser on February 9, 2018, at the Hilton Lexington Downtown. This annual event raises money to help fund the UKCD Alumni Association Scholarship, which is awarded annually to a fourth-year dental student, and for student and alumni events and programs. The executive board consists of a president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer, as well as at-large members who all are voting members. All officers must be members of the UKCD Alumni Association. The term of office for the executive board is two years, and an officer may hold the same position for two successive terms. At-large members are asked to serve at least one two-year term. A faculty representative, four dental students, each representing his or her class, and a resident make up the remainder of the board. Meetings are held at least four times per year in the evening at the college. During meetings, the board discusses upcoming events and activities regarding the association and the college. The board is responsible for selecting the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year and the UKCD Alumni Association Scholarship recipient. UK DENTISTRY STUDENT, ALUMNA HONORED WITH LYMAN T. JOHNSON AWARDS Distinguished University of Kentucky students and alumni were honored with the Torch of Excellence and Torch Bearer awards at the 27th annual Lyman T. Johnson Upholding the Torch of Excellence awards ceremony. Among those recognized were College of Dentistry alumna Dr. Tonda Helton ('07), and Dr. Whitney White ('18). The event recognized deserving African-American alumni, faculty, staff, and students who exemplify the passion and courage exhibited by Lyman T. Johnson, an educator and civil rights leader who led the fight for the desegregation of the University of Kentucky. Throughout her career, Dr. Helton has delivered compassionate care to underserved populations from both rural and urban areas. Her personal mission is to educate her patients — both young and old — to improve their dental literacy. During her time at UKCD, Dr. White served as the president for the Student National Dental Association and the advertising chair for the American Association of Public Health Dentistry. She frequently volunteered at Mission Lexington, a clinic that provides healthcare free of charge to adults in Lexington. Following graduation, she plans to continue giving back to underserved minority communities and mentoring pre-dental students.

SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITY THROUGH SERVICE LESSONS IN A LUNCHBOX & IMPRESSIONS DAY The Student National Dental Association (SNDA) Chapter at UK hosted Lessons in a Lunchbox at Breckenridge Elementary in Lexington. During the program, DMD students spoke with second- and thirdgrade students about oral hygiene. Children received their own lunchbox filled with oral hygiene supplies to take home.
One thing is for sure; dental school is full of challenges and requires student dentists to manage their time well. Even with the many demands our students juggle, supporting our community remains an important priority. By helping to expose students to diverse outreach and service-learning opportunities, UKCD seeks to foster an awareness of access to care issues in students, while allowing them to develop an altruistic, professional aspiration for volunteerism and social responsibility.
Next SNDA turned their attention to possible future dentists by hosting Impressions Day at UKCD. Current DMD students and UKCD admissions representatives and faculty welcomed high school students and undergrads for a day of hands-on activities in the pre-clinic lab, mock interviews, and discussion on the dental school admissions process.

Be it providing dental-related support by fundraising to aid the Lexington Mission Dental Clinic to holding sewing sessions to support Days for Girls, UKCD student dentists stay busy volunteering throughout the year! Here’s just a few highlights of their many activities:

"THE JOY THAT EXISTS THERE IS CONTAGIOUS!” To aid in onboarding incoming first-year DMD students and help familiarize them with the resources they need to succeed both inside and outside the classroom, last year UKCD introduced S.M.I.L.E Week — Students Matriculating Into the Learning Experience. As part of this experience, students had the option to participate in a service project in the greater Lexington community. Students supported the Hope Center by working in the community garden, visited the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge, helped to socialize animals at the Lexington Humane Society, supported Habitat for Humanity by working at the ReStore location, and baked treats for patients and their families at the Ronald McDonald House. Danielle Pikinpaugh, Class of 2021, described volunteering at the Hope Lodge as an eye-opening experience. “Just 30 seconds walking distance from the football stadium, I would have never known that a peaceful, hopeful home existed for those undergoing treatment for cancer. I cannot wait to go back and serve again. The joy that exists there is contagious!”

SATURDAY MORNING CLINICS Created by student dentists over four decades ago as an opportunity to promote oral health and awareness while giving back to the community, the Saturday Morning Clinic (SMC) continues to offer free dental care, including cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants and restorative procedures, to children ages four to 12. During the 2017-2018 school year, students were able to schedule more frequent SMCs to better serve the community’s needs. When asked about SMC, Morgan Murrell, Class of 2018, explained, "Children pose unique challenges when providing dental treatment. However, the reward of restoring a tiny smile or getting a child out of pain so they were able to return to school made me realize my passion for pediatrics." Murrell will be starting a Pediatric Dentistry Residency at the University of Kentucky in fall 2018.

In June, DMD students joined UKCD faculty and University of Kentucky Professional Education Preparation Program (PEPP) students to volunteer in Hazard, Ky. at a Remote Area Medical (RAM) Clinic. At the clinic, students worked with other health care providers to offer free medical services to some 500 underserved and uninsured individuals.
