Empowering the Next Generation of Pharmacy Professionals Dear Fellow Preceptors, As I pen this message for the inaugural issue of our College of Pharmacy newsletter, I am filled with a profound sense of pride and optimism. Being a part of the educational journey of future pharmacists is not just a professional commitment for me; it's a passion deeply rooted in the belief that each of us represents the future of healthcare. Don’t forget we all started with a preceptor in our lives.

Pharmacy, as a discipline, stands at the crossroads of science and humanism. Every pill dispensed, every treatment plan formulated, and every patient interaction carries the weight of someone's hope for better health. As a preceptor, my aim is to not only to impart the necessary clinical skills and knowledge but also to nurture the empathy, ethics, and critical thinking that are the hallmarks of a great pharmacist.

Reflecting on my own journey, I recall the excitement mixed with trepidation as I embarked on this noble path. The journey was replete with challenges, but each obstacle was an opportunity to grow. I learned early on that the role of a pharmacist extends beyond the confines of prescription and medication management.

We are educators, advocates, and often, a source of comfort to those in distress.

I congratulate you for stepping into an era of unprecedented change in healthcare. Technological advancements, evolving patient needs, and a greater emphasis on personalized medicine are reshaping our profession. Embrace these changes with an open mind and a learning attitude. Remember, your education does not end with a degree; it is a lifelong pursuit. The calling for me, as a preceptor, is to stay current, evolve as healthcare and society does via my students, and to have a sense of pride by giving back and [Insert Text Here] paying the debt of the preceptors I had during my schooling.

To the future preceptors reading this, know that your role is crucial. You are not just preparing to be a part of the healthcare system; you are gearing up to be its backbone. In your hands lies the power to heal, to comfort, and to change lives. I urge you to approach each day of your training with curiosity, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. The diversity of the students you will be blessed with will keep you on your toes, but you’ve got it. They are simply there to witness the example of the magic you provide society and your patients.

As we embark on this this new publication, let us pledge to uphold the sanctity of our profession and strive to make a difference, one patient at a time. Together, we can and will shape a healthier, brighter future. Let us also extend the branch of participation to our colleagues not yet involved in precepting. With the spectrum of the profession being so vast, we need all comers.

Student Reflections Reflecting upon my time thus far as an APPE student, I am incredibly thankful for all of the amazing preceptors who have helped us make the transition out of the classroom into caring for real patients.

The guidance and mentorship provided by my preceptors is truly invaluable. Their dedication to teaching goes beyond the call of duty, as they invest time and effort into imparting knowledge and wisdom that textbooks can’t capture. I am immensely grateful for their commitment to nurturing our skills and shaping us into amazing future pharmacists.

During my APPE year, I’ve had the privilege of working with pharmacists across the state in a multitude of settings including independent community pharmacy, inpatient medical oncology, and a community hospital. At each of these sites and under the guidance of my preceptors, I was able to care for patients with differing backgrounds and medical needs, furthering my overall knowledge of the practice of pharmacy. Through the culmination of these experiences, I’ve not only gained clinical knowledge but also developed a profound appreciation for the crucial role pharmacists play in healthcare delivery.

As I reflect on my journey, I can’t help but express gratitude for the preceptors who have been instrumental in shaping my professional and personal growth!

A Note from the Office of External Studies Dear Faculty Preceptors, I hope this message finds you well and thriving in the new year. I wanted to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude for your unwavering commitment to shaping the future of our student pharmacists. Your dedication to mentoring and guiding our students during their experiential rotations plays a pivotal role in their development as future pharmacists. Your passion for imparting knowledge and fostering a positive learning environment does not go unnoticed.

We understand the importance of effective communication in ensuring a successful collaboration. In 2024, we are eager to enhance our communication channels and tailor our updates to better suit your needs, and this quarterly newsletter is a start!

We value your perspective and would love to hear your ideas on how we can improve and streamline our communication with you. Our goal is to create an environment where you feel informed and supported throughout the entire process.

Experiential Items to Note

The Class of 2024 is in the midst of residency and job interviews. Please consider their requests for time off to schedule these important dates for their future careers and work with them individually for makeup time. As a reminder, Phase I Match for residency is Wednesday, March 13th and Phase II Match is Wednesday, April 10th. Those can be joyful or difficult days pending the outcome for your [Insert Text Here] residency-bound students. Our office is available for questions and consults if you need assistance.

The scheduling of APPE electives for the Class of 2025 is currently underway, and PY1 and PY2 students will receive their summer IPPE assignments in February. Thanks to you we had over 1600 individual rotations open for APPE and over 450 spots for summer IPPEs! Preceptors will receive notice of their scheduled students for the upcoming year on Friday, March 8th. Our IPPE-Longitudinals are scheduled separately, so you will get more information about those later this spring.

We are so grateful for your partnership in offering such amazing opportunities for this upcoming year.

Thank you once again for your dedication and service. Together, we play a vital role in shaping the next generation of pharmacists, and your efforts are truly appreciated.

Meet Our New Team Member!

Lisa Hatten, MS

Lisa Hatten is a graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park

Program Coordinator University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy

with a BS in Kinesiology and an MS in Athletic Training from Marshall University. A native of West Virginia, she joined the University of Kentucky as a Health Education Coordinator with the Center for Interprofessional Health and Community Education where she served

health professional students on AHEC rotations and coordinated healthcare learning opportunities for high school students. She and her husband have two adult children and three Brittany Spaniels.

Lisa joined the UKCOP External Studies Team in the fall of 2023 and will be assuming the Coordinator position previously held by Mike Richardson, who retired from the College in December of 2023. Lisa brings with her a wealth of experience from her previous role with AHEC. We are excited to have her as a member of our External Studies Team!

College Updates PharmD Program Accredited through 2032 The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) conducted a reaccreditation site visit at the College in October 2023. The ACPE Board of Directors found the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy Doctor of Pharmacy program to be in compliance with all accreditation standards and awarded the program a full 8 years of continued accreditation through 2031-2032!

Special thanks to all the preceptors who volunteered and participated in the accreditation site visit this past fall. We appreciate your continued support of the UK College of Pharmacy and commitment to training the next generation of pharmacists!
