Through our innovative educational programs, we prepare our graduates to be leaders in the fields of pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences, equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to improve patient outcomes and drive innovation in healthcare.

Our research endeavors have also continued to thrive, with a focus on addressing critical healthcare challenges such as cancer, diabetes, and opioid addiction. Our faculty members have received numerous grants and awards for their cutting-edge research, and we remain committed to pursuing innovative solutions to the most pressing healthcare issues of our time.

Finally, our commitment to patient care remains at the forefront of all that we do. Our clinical faculty and staff work tirelessly to provide the highest quality care to our patients, while also training the next generation of pharmacists to be patient-centered and empathetic healthcare providers.

As we look to the future, we remain committed to our mission of advancing the pharmacy profession and improving healthcare outcomes for all.

Thank you for your continued support.

TO OUR NEWEST GRADUATES!

All in the Family

While working the old-fashioned soda fountain at his local pharmacy, a teenage Bill Borders pondered how it would feel to be the professional behind the medication counter. Borders admired the pharmacist’s ability to build relationships with each patient and their influence on keeping the community healthy. This curiosity resulted in a chain of events that would inspire six of his family members to pursue pharmacy at the University of Kentucky. READ

Recognizing Our 2022 Distinguished Preceptors

The University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy (UKCOP) inducted five preceptors into the newly formed Hall of Distinguished Preceptors (HODP) on April 29, 2022. These awards are given to individuals with Voluntary or Adjunct Faculty status who precept student pharmacists. UKCOP recognizes preceptor excellence and dedication to educating future pharmacists through experiential learning. Within the HODP, there are five Preceptor of the Year award designations: APPE, IPPE, Commonwealth Experience Rotation, New Preceptor, and Louisville Clinical Education Center.

“Preceptors help guide and mentor the next generation of pharmacy leaders,” said Dr. Holly Divine, Director of Experiential Education. “We are proud to partner with over 600 preceptors who support the experiential education program and contribute to the education of our students. Quite simply, we could not do it without them, and we are honored to recognize these five outstanding preceptors for their service.”

Five accomplished University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy alumni — three in 2021 and two in 2022 — were inducted into the College’s Hall of Distinguished Alumni.

2021 inductees include Young Alumni Award winner Dr. Joshua Brown (’16) and Lifetime Achievement Award winners Dr. Eiichi Akaho (‘79) and Dr. Stephen W. Schondelmeyer (’77). Their peers selected these three new inductees for their exceptional contributions to their respective fields and their embodiment of UKCOP values.

2022 inductees for the Lifetime Achievement Award are R. Kim Brazzell (BS ’75, Ph.D. ‘79) and Henry J. Mann (BS ’76, PharmD ’80, R89). Their peers selected the new inductees for their notable contributions to their respective fields.

“For more than 150 years, the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy has produced outstanding pharmacy practitioners and researchers who have changed how we think about patient health and scientific progress,” said Dean R. Kip Guy. “We are proud to celebrate the achievements of these bold innovators who have dedicated their lives to improving the way we teach and practice pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences.” Nominations are collected year-round and selected once per academic year.

Empowering Dentists to Reduce Opioid Prescriptions to Young People

With National Institutes of Health funding, faculty from the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry and College of Pharmacy are examining opioid prescriptions for adolescents and young adults after major dental procedures.

Principal investigators on the award, Marcia Rojas-Ramirez, D.D.S., assistant professor of dentistry, and Doug Oyler, Pharm.D., assistant professor of pharmacy practice and science, teamed up to implement an intervention strategy with dental providers to reduce the amount of opioid prescriptions they write after dental procedures.

“Many of us personally know someone who has been affected by a substance use disorder and have seen how devastating these can be not only to the individual, but also family members and the community,” Rojas-Ramirez said. “So, acknowledging and observing that, knowing the role of dentistry in this opioid epidemic has been a factor leading to the development of this proposal.”

College of Pharmacy Receives Funding to Increase Access to Lifesaving Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder

Research Funding

The Foundation for Opioid Response Efforts (FORE) has selected the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy as one of three higher education entities funded to improve access to medications for opioid use disorder in pharmacies and health care settings.

Rural Appalachian communities in Kentucky have been highly impacted by substance use disorder and opioid overdose deaths. Buprenorphine is a Food and Drug Administration-approved medication that has been shown to decrease overdose mortality, increase remission and recovery, and improve quality of life for people with opioid use disorder. Yet, a study found that most pharmacies in 12 rural Appalachian counties were limiting their dispensing of buprenorphine or not dispensing it at all.

The College of Pharmacy has been awarded nearly half a million dollars to develop and test a peer-to-peer education program for pharmacists to increase buprenorphine dispensing. The project, led by Trish Rippetoe Freeman, Ph.D., professor of pharmacy practice and science, aims to equip pharmacists with the information and understanding of buprenorphine treatment, guidelines, and regulations to feel confident dispensing medication for opioid use disorder.
