There are some sounds that are not heard only through your ears – they are sounds that seem to permeate your body and soul from all directions, or is it no direction?
Standing in a cathedral while a pipe organ is played can create this sensation, the sound is all around you. But there are two sounds I know of that do something more – the music is not only swirling around you, it seeps into your very being and directly touches your heart. The human voice when in numbers does this, and a large brass ensemble is like standing inside the very pipes of an organ.
The exigent question that fascinates me is – what would it be like to play a solo instrument whilst standing in the middle of such a soundscape? What would it be like to be in the room as this is created? In September we’ll find out. One night of Brass Sonority and an afternoon of Vocal Bliss.
And the night in the middle? Only a handful of times in my life have I been awestruck when hearing a jazz soloist who goes beyond what seems possible, someone who literally redefines how their instrument can be played. Patrick Bartley is such a musician. To hear him play will leave you in breathless wonderment – at his virtuosity, his musicality and his sheer creativity. He’s never been to Australia and I’m beyond excited to bring him to UKARIA.
I believe this weekend of euphoria could be an experience after which you’ll have to recalibrate your musical appreciation scale – ten just isn’t going to be enough.

This night will explore the wonderful world of brass, not in the form of a traditional brass band, but a more European-style brass ensemble consisting of four trumpets, four trombones, a French horn and a tuba. The repertoire will include jazz standards, original compositions, Latin grooves, Gospel vibes, and a large dose of improvisation on a brass theme. We will be joined by our special guest Patrick Bartley, who will add his creative brilliance to the soundscape that only a brass ensemble can provide. This will not be just for jazz lovers, or brass aficionados (although they’re well catered for) – it’s something not to be missed by anyone who loves a musical adventure.

You can play jazz trumpet with a rhythm section, a jazz combo, a brass ensemble or even a big band – they’re all collections that give the soloist a musical setting in which to create. This performance will set
Patrick Bartley and I within a wonderland of twelve vocalists, led by The Idea of North’s esteemed alto, Naomi Crellin. Sometimes a cappella, sometimes with rhythm section, they will take us from hymns to samba, from swing to bossa nova, and even perhaps to musical heaven. If you love vocal music, it will be a unique treat – but like our Friday night brass fantasy, if you have the simple wish to be inspired, you need to join us.

James Morrison Curator / Brass / Piano
James Morrison is, by anybody’s standard, a virtuoso in the true sense of the word. Besides the trumpet, this multiinstrumentalist also plays trombone, piano, saxophone and double bass.
At the age of six he started on piano, at seven he took up brass, at nine he formed his first band and at thirteen he was playing professionally in nightclubs. His international career developed just as quickly with a debut in the US at the Monterey Jazz Festival at age sixteen.
Following this were performances at the world’s major jazz festivals, including Montreux, North Sea, Nice and the Hollywood Bowl, playing with many of the legends of jazz – Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, Dave Brubeck, Chick Corea, George Benson, Quincy Jones, Ray Charles, B.B. King, Ray Brown and Wynton Marsalis to name a few. James also frequents the world’s most famous jazz clubs – Birdland, The Blue Note and Village Vanguard in New York, the New Morning in Paris, the Tokyo Blue Note and Ronnie Scott’s in London.
James has been appointed a member of The Order of Australia, has won countless awards and has been inducted into the Australian Jazz Hall of Fame. He has received several honorary Doctorates and was an Adjunct Professor at the University of South Australia, leading his own music Academy.
Now in his 60s, James Morrison’s career has included much more than just jazz… He has recorded with The London Symphony Orchestra, rock legends INXS and the European Brass Ensemble, performed at the Royal Albert Hall for the BBC Proms, written the opening fanfare for the Olympic Games, played for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and for US Presidents Bush and Clinton. He has played classical trumpet at the Kremlin, broken a Guinness record conducting the World’s Largest Orchestra, was TV presenter on Top Gear Australia and in 2016 James was a guest of President Barack Obama at the White House. He’s a pilot, rally driver, sailor, author and even a builder of Tiny Houseboats.
Patrick Bartley Saxophone
A GRAMMY-nominated saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist and bandleader from Hollywood, Florida who is known for his boundless versatility, virtuosic technique and expressive vocal-like sound. Since moving to New York City, Patrick has performed and recorded with some of the greatest musical masters in the world, including Wynton Marsalis, Jon Batiste, Emmet Cohen, Larry Grenadier, Steve Miller, Herbie Hancock, Louis Hayes, Carole King, Jimmy Cobb, Marquis Hill, Bobby Sanabria, Marcus Printup, and many others.

Place YouTube sessions which have been viewed millions of times (namely, A fter You’ve Gone), as well as for starting the J-MUSIC Ensemble, a band dedicated to examining the world of modern Japanese music through the lens of jazz. Since its inception, J-MUSIC has garnered millions of views and hundreds of thousands of fans worldwide, and has led to Patrick connecting and working with some of the greatest names in modern Japanese music, such as Sayaka Yamamoto, sasakure.UK, Donna Burke, Awich, Miho Hazama, and more.
Naomi Crellin Alto / Vocal Director
Naomi Crellin graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Voice from the Elder Conservatorium – University of Adelaide after beginning on classical piano. Naomi has also studied classical, jazz and contemporary voice, conducting, piano and jazz ballet, and has taught piano, vocal, and choral students for many years. Educating vocalists of all ages and ability levels in the niche art of small group ensemble singing is her specialty and her passion. After joining The Idea of North in early 2002, Naomi quickly became a significant contributor to the group’s repertoire through her writing and arranging and has also utilised her extensive choral training and experience in taking a major responsibility for managing the group’s musical affairs and educational activities. In 2024 Naomi started Nexus NDV, a high level harmony singing group for neurodivergent young adults.
James Morrison Quartet
No matter how familiar you may be with James Morrison, you haven’t heard him play until you’ve heard him with this group. It is a testament to their energy and sheer brilliance that James says his favourite way to play is with his quartet – this coming from a man who has played with many of the greats of jazz, including Quincy Jones, Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, Ray Brown, Wynton Marsalis and many more. What makes the quartet so special is the joy they create when they perform. James says, ‘This is what can happen when you have four musicians who all have a will to swing and are of one mind when it comes to the reason they play.’
‘Patrick Danao is one of the most exciting drummers on the scene today – inventive, virtuosic, and always so musical. Harry is a powerhouse on the bass, reminiscent of the Ray Brown approach, swing at all costs – his energy underpins everything the band does. William not only plays beautiful classic jazz guitar, but also writes much of the original material performed by the group and this compositional aspect is always present in his playing.’
With his three colleagues covering guitar, bass and drums, James plays anything from trombone, flugel horn and saxophones to piano, and of course the trumpet.

As always, we will be facilitating access requests across the weekend. Accessible seats are located on the ground floor of the auditorium. If you require easy-access seating, please let our team know at least one week prior by emailing info@ukaria.com or phoning the office on (08) 8227 1277.
BUS SERVICE
UKARIA will offer a bus service from Adelaide all weekend. Please take note of the specific time and location when booking your bus ticket for each day. The cost of a bus ticket is $22 return per day, and we do not offer a reduced price for one-way travel. If you arrive after the departure time and miss the bus, your concert and bus ticket are non-refundable. Tickets for the bus service will be taken off sale at 5.00pm on Wednesday 26 August.
