orty years after basketball was first played at the Olympics in Nazi Germany, a young Hungarian-Jewish refugee, who was the child of Holocaust survivors, became a gold medalist in basketball playing for the United States in the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games. Dan Grunfeld, himself a former stand-out player at Stanford, shares the incredible story of his famous father, Ernie Grunfeld, and his family’s journey from Auschwitz to the NBA. Traversing the spectrum of the human experience, the family’s story shows how perseverance, love, and legacy can survive through generations – all carried on the shoulders of the game of basketball. pril 26, 1986, will forever be etched in the memory of Dr. Alla Shapiro. Dispatched to the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station in Ukraine, Shapiro recalls the eerie silence as she treated traumatized children amid an emerging nuclear nightmare. Forced to participate in what she refers to as a government-perpetrated misinformation campaign and after enduring years of antisemitism in her workplace, she and her family fled the Soviet Union. After a harrowing journey to the United States and the complicated process of becoming a doctor for the second time in a new country, Shapiro is now one of the world’s leading experts in the development of medical countermeasures against radiation exposure. A personal account of one of the world’s largest modern disasters, her story is almost beyond belief. In partnership with Jewish Family Service of Tidewater.
