Everyone keeps telling you that you are an adult now. Well, B’nai Tzedek helps make it real. You get to create your own fund, make your own choices, learn and grow as a Jewish philanthropist…and really make a difference!

Choose a Jewish cause that is meaningful to you, and support it through your fund Over time, your fund sh ou grow, to benefit Jewish ld organizations of your ch oice!

The Tidewater Jewish Foundation (TJF) B’nai Tzedek Teen Philanthropy Program encourages teens to become involved in tzedakah by establishing a fund for Jewish charitable giving. Opening a B’nai Tzedek fund gives you a chance to play a part in improving your community and the world.

So how does this work?

1. Donate at least $250 to the Tidewater Jewish Foundation (TJF). TJF will match your gift, up to $250. You now have a $500 B’nai Tzedek Fund in your own name!

2. Learn about the needs of our Jewish community – locally, in Israel, and around the world.

3. Each year, grant 5% of your fund to a Jewish charity. (TJF will provide a list of local and national Jewish charities for you to consider.)

Who can open a fund? Anyone who is having a Bar/Bat Mitzvah is eligible to open a B’nai Tzedek fund. This program is also open to any Jewish person (under the age of 18) in Tidewater.

How will my fund grow? Your fund will receive investment income. As your fund grows over time, the amount of money you can grant (5% each year) would also grow.

What charities can I give to? You may make a grant from your fund to any Jewish charity of your choosing. TJF will provide you a comprehensive list of charities, so you can pick what is meaningful to you!

How do I make the distribution? Each year, you will go online to TJF’s website, fill out an online distribution form, pick the charity and we will make the gift on your behalf.

How long can I keep my fund? Your fund remains open until you turn 25, if you’ve continued to utilize it each year. At that time, if it has a balance of $2,500, you may convert it to a Donor Advised Fund,

a charitable giving fund for adults. If your fund is less than the $2,500 at age 25 and you are actively engaged with giving, please call TJF to discuss options. If your fund is inactive for 5 consecutive years, the balance will become a part of TJF’s Community Impact Fund and will be used to support a variety of community needs.
