WHO WE ARE & WHAT WE DO OUR MISSION The Simon Family JCC’s mission is to provide a common meeting

ground promoting Jewish unity, Jewish continuity, and the enrichment of the Jewish and general community.

OUR HISTORY The Simon Family JCC started life as the Tidewater Jewish Community Center in 1952. It was located on Spotswood Avenue in Norfolk from 1952 – 1966. It then moved to Newport Avenue in Norfolk, where it remained until 2004. In 2004, the current campus in Virginia Beach

opened its doors. Throughout its history, the JCC has been a center for the entire community, providing a family-friendly environment

where we can all stay healthy in body and mind. We have always been and continue to be an organization guided by our Jewish values and

welcoming to all members of the community, regardless of age, faith or background.

A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Friends, We. It’s a strong word, and one we hear a lot at the Simon Family JCC. We connect people. We help them grow and develop lasting memories.

We build and maintain a strong community, enhancing the lives of Tidewater area families.

When we say we, we mean our staff, lay leadership, members, volunteers, and generous donors. Together, we make a difference.

For more than 60 years, the Simon Family JCC has been at the core of Jewish programming and services. During those decades, we’ve evolved to better serve our community.

Thanks to our generous donors, this year we hosted Rabbi Joseph Telushkin as part of our Lee and Bernard Jaffe* Family Jewish Book Festival and brought in well-known Israeli musician David Broza to perform as part of our Celebrate Israel series. Through the support of community partners, our cultural arts events allowed us to impact more people this year than last.

Internally, we’re combining our Beginnings program with the Strelitz Early Childhood Education Center to give children the very best start.

We also increased participation in our Kids Connection and Camp JCC programs.

We connect people. We help them grow and develop lasting memories... Together, we make a difference.

As we develop our goals for next year, we want to build on the family experience and provide more opportunities for families with older children, as well as the community as a whole.

By offering new and enhanced opportunities for our members and donors to engage with each other through our myriad of programs and services, we will continue to be the JCC for many generations to come.

PART OF THE FAMILY I am a man with autism, but that does not mean I am not able to do lots of things. There are some things I do better than people who aren’t autistic, but because it is hard to talk, people may not know that.

You may see the 22-year-old washing, drying, and folding towels at the JCC, where he says he loves working.

The JCC has been a part of Daniel Hecht’s life since he was two.

Though he was not a typical toddler, the center welcomed Daniel and

provided him an aide so he could attend preschool.

Years later, while in inclusion settings at school, Daniel wrote that he liked

being with “real kids,” meaning typical kids, because he was part of the group—just like everyone else.

Daniel’s involvement at the JCC deepened during the summer

months when his family helped Camp

JCC staff set up an inclusion program.

As a part of the center’s commitment to inclusion at Camp JCC, they

trained the staff and several aides

to help special needs campers, but Daniel and his committed family spurred the program.

Daniel enjoyed camp year after year, and the JCC continues to welcome special needs campers, providing

counselors called shadows to work with these campers.

WE ARE FAMILY Kids Connection participants started a newspaper where Kindergarten

through 5th graders wrote their own articles after conducting interviews.

Storybook Adventure Camp during Spring Break attracted new

participants, ages 4 to 12. Children enjoyed making Harry Potter-like

potions, following the White Rabbit on a scavenger hunt, and searching for their own favorite storybook during a field trip to the library.

December’s Latka-Palooza had more than 100 adults and children participate in this Hanukkah celebration—the best turnout to date.

Kids Night Out for JCC members hosted 50 or more children during each of the monthly Saturday evening programs.

We thanked our members with free treats during JCC Membership Appreciation Days at the end of each month.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME Nona Lipsey is a bit of a Mah Jong enthusiast.

When she moved to the Virginia Beach area to live closer to family in 2010, she joined the Simon Family JCC after hearing about the regular Monday games.

During a few Mah Jong games, Nona heard about water

exercise programs offered during the week. Gradually, she became a regular.

Fast forward a few months and Nona had a set schedule.

WE ARE COMMUNITY Israel Fest, once again, brought the community together to celebrate all things Israeli at the Simon Family JCC. Nearly 1,700 enjoyed all the festival had to

offer—Israeli food, beer, crafts, games, a live band, art, and well-loved camel rides.

This tremendous annual event requires hundreds of JCC staff hours and depends on dozens of volunteers, as well as the generous support of community donors.

Thanks to our major sponsor, Charles Barker Automotive, for supporting the entire Celebrate Israeli series, of which Israel Fest was the third event.

The Celebrate Israel series began with President and Founder of the Reut Institute Gidi Grinstein, who spoke at the JCC on Monday, April 20th. The

second event, just three days later, was the showing of National Geographic’s Jerusalem documentary on the Giant Screen Theater at the Virginia Beach.

International musician and Israeli song writer David Broza wrapped up the JCC Celebrate Israel series, performing live at the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday, May 21st.

COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHTS

• The local Israeli community heard from noted author and speaker Gidi Grinstein, who leads think tank Reut Institute in Tel Aviv.

• Grinstein addressed the need for Jewish agencies to reach out and welcome Israelis. The Simon Family JCC has exemplified this goal by bringing in The Maccabeats singing group, musician David Broza, and the Israeli Scouts

Caravan. The center’s programs will continue to seek out Hebrew speakers, authors, and musicians.

• The Simon Family JCC hosted the 5th Annual Presidents’ Cup Golf

Tournament. More than 80 golfers participated, including a large group of young professionals.

• BBYO recruited 30 new members this school year, bringing our total number of Tidewater members to 140. They also sent 41 Tidewater members to Summer Programs.

• BBYO raised close to $3,000 for the Southeastern Alzheimer’s Association through an Up All Night lock in at the Simon Family JCC.

JCC for the athletic facilities and

family-centric programs. Those hours in the racquetball courts, gym, and

pool yielded new friendships. Those friendships drew us further into

the community, and we decided to give back, volunteering as part of

the JCC board. That was the first of

many Tidewater Jewish organization memberships for us, as well as our son, Gary.

It all started with the JCC. We’ve watched the community grow

and shift over the decades. Realizing the community center needed to

transform as its members had, we campaigned for a JCC facility in

Virginia Beach. Years later, the Sandler

proven to be a huge asset in our

disabilities, started by our family and sponsored by JFS and UJFT. Our

grandchildren were Hebrew Academy students.

Our family certainly has participated and benefited greatly from JCC

resources and opportunities, which

is why we wish to leave a legacy gift to the JCC in our will as part of our estate planning.

The financial needs of the JCC clearly require us to do more than pay

our annual membership dues and

participate in fundraisers. We want to ensure the JCC thrives and benefits future generations, as it did for us.
