Consider it your own Can a city be yours? A city feels like your city if you were born there, work there, fall in love there, or get married there. If you build or make something there or write a song about it. But what if you land in a city for one night and head out the next morning out of curiosity? In this Eindless, people arrive and then leave again. Kasamat flies from London to Eindhoven for research and moves on a day later. Bert, on the other hand, travels from Eindhoven with his family to Pisa and Loana once came from Romania to Strijp-S for her studies and subsequently let that part of Eindhoven run like a common thread through her life. Now she is starting something new there again. Perhaps a city already becomes a bit yours when you add something to it or take something out of it. If you are a designer or creator and are looking for space for your ideas. If you are Caffeine Dealers and show that coffee is also a means to help people reconnect. Or if your name is Iris Penning, you capture Eindhoven in language and music and then pass that on. To you. In her column, Loubna Bakra poses a question that, as far as I am concerned, we should drape over this entire Eindless: if no one person alone makes the city, who gets to claim that city’s success? I think all of us. You, me, and that others. Because then we can also share in the success, the sorrow, the beauty, and the awkwardness. Now that schedules are filling up again, I therefore propose not only to look at what is happening, but especially at who is making it happen. Pass something on or take something along and whether you arrive, stay, leave, return, create, share, or meet each other along the way, keep looking at who the people are that make your city. Kasamat, a master’s student, has been studying on the London Campus of Glasgow University for almost a year now. ‘It is a very busy city, very multicultural. You meet people from all over the world there and are constantly learning something new. A wonderful place to study.’ He’s come to the Netherlands for his graduation project. ‘My research is about how countries and companies grow. That is why I visit various companies, including startups and enterprises, to see how they approach it.’ Today he’s going to the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven. ‘I was looking for universities and companies in the area. I’m going to meet students and listen to their experiences.’ After one night in Eindhoven, he’s going on to Amsterdam, where he’ll meet a fellow student. ‘The Netherlands is very quiet and peaceful. I like that.’ In total, he’ll be travelling for seven days to collect data for his thesis. He hardly feels homesick. ‘I have cousins and many friends in London. Because of that, I never feel alone.’ Yet this is his first time studying abroad for an extended period. ‘It’s a good experience; I’m learning an incredible amount here.’ After his thesis is finished, he’ll return to Pakistan. His plan extends beyond a job: ‘In the long term, I want to start my own company.’

A group walks past at Eindhoven Airport. Bert, his wife Hanneke, their two daughters, son-in-law, and grandchild. Together they are leaving for Pisa. The group has deliberately chosen Eindhoven Airport. ‘We are here today because Ryanair flies from here,’ says Bert. ‘Eindhoven Airport suits us just fine. Easy parking, not far from the terminal, everything works nice and fast. Truly ideal. Our previous trips were to Sardinia and Crete, back then we flew from Schiphol.’ Bert is retired. For years he ran a dairy farm. ‘I sold the business, but I still have some land.’ There is no successor within the family. ‘Farming isn’t in the children’s blood. One is in sales, the other a physiotherapist.’ He is content with that. ‘It’s not that much fun for a farmer these days.’ You really need to make it your passion, otherwise you should never start. All those rules, you must want that. Your work has to be fun.’ But Bert is anything but sitting still. ‘I still do some work. I have a garden at home and on the farm and, every now and then, I babysit.’ Otherwise, he enjoys life, preferably together with Hanneke. Today, the trip to Pisa is on the schedule; they have a wedding party to attend. On the way to sun and a party in Pisa.

Direct connections, close to home

Eindhoven Airport has 7 million passengers per year, which is an average of more than 18,000 arriving and departing people every day. 53% of them travel on a holiday or a city trip, 33% visit family and/or friends and 14% make a business trip. However short their visit may be the airport strengthens the growth of the region for settling, for living and working, and in economic terms.

Ioana Iliescu-Jack at her beloved This is a story about love for and dedication to Strijp-S, a special part of Eindhoven that has, over the years, served as the backdrop for various projects in the life of Romanian architect & interior designer Ioana Iliescu-Jack. From her studies to her latest project, OF A KIND, her story is intertwined with the development of this beloved area. From her design studio, Anathema Design, in Microlab, she has worked on homes, shops, and workspaces. Curiosity is the guiding principle in everything she designs. Now she is writing a new, special chapter in her life, dedicated to the world of design. Once again, she is doing so at her beloved Strijp-S. ou have a strong bond with Strijp-S. Almost as if you are connected to one another.

It started in 2005, when I ended up here via an Erasmus exchange. After that, I stayed to complete my master’s at TU/e. Due to previous soil contamination, the former industrial site was still largely fallow at the time. It was reclaimed and developed to expand the city centre, and it immediately caught my interest! I studied Project and Process Management for the construction sector on the ADMS programme. During the discussion about tendering for major projects public-private partnerships, Strijp-S was cited as a perfect example of an alliance involved in the redevelopment of such a vast former industrial site. We viewed it purely from a contractual perspective, but I became increasingly fascinated by it. Naturally, there was also an urban planning aspect to it, and an architectural one, because so many buildings were given a new purpose. There was a large master plan, with a scale model that can still be seen at Donna today. The redevelopment was still in its infancy, and the ‘underground’ culture was given free rein there: the BMX park, Area 51, the Monk climbing gym with the city gardens (where the BDO buildings now stand) the Apparatenfabriek, the first offices in the Klokgebouw, the lofts in Anton and Gerard, and the Andrea Amaro food experiences and calçotada parties. I loved going there. It felt like reclaiming that post-industrial space. It was a distinctly non-mainstream place to hang out. That’s why my husband and I got married at Strijp-S, in the Ketelhuis, in 2013. We did our photoshoot in the Anton Building rooftop gardens.

How do you view the area now? I’ve mixed feelings about the development of Strijp-S. It’s grown and has consequently lost some of its wildness, although you can still find traces of it in the old lifts and pipes. Perhaps it is nostalgia, but I remain drawn to it and I’m incredibly happy that I’ve now found a place there again that doesn’t feel overwhelming. The Matchbox building is smaller in scale than the other buildings; it feels more like my size and it smells wonderfully of wood. It suits me better physically and doesn’t impose any expectations on me; it feels almost like a kind of bubble. What are you creating there? A permanent gallery for unique design objects and limited-edition items, made by Design Academy Eindhoven and TU/e graduates. The goal is to occupy the space between experimental design studio and traditional art gallery, with objects that are too functional to be considered autonomous art, but too conceptual for mass production.

‘At that moment, something began to grow inside me: I wanted to support these designers.’ At OF A KIND, the designers receive one hundred percent of the sale price of their work. This is stipulated in the establishing documents. No other gallery in the Netherlands operates in this way. The gallery is funded by events, consultancy, digital subscriptions, and subsidies. During the Night of Strijp-S on 19th September, we are organising an initial teaser event to introduce ourselves to the neighbourhood. The first exhibition then officially opens in mid-October, during Dutch Design Week. Every quarter, we’ll present a new selection of designers.

How did OF A KIND come about? For seven years, I had my studio at Microlab, and I loved being part of that creative community. It was inspiring to be surrounded by the imagination and energy of young designers like Sho Otta, Luuk van Laarhoven, Audrey Large, Théophile Blandet, and Thomas Ballouhey. I loved being in touch with them and often visited them to follow their intensive creative processes. Eventually, I saw how some of them started packing everything up and leaving Eindhoven because they had to go somewhere else to make a living from their work. I felt an increasingly strong sense that I had to do something. That is why I started buying small works from several of them. For example, I asked Sho to use my oak remnants for his Quadruped table, which I love immensely, and my daughter does as well. At that time, something started growing inside me: I wanted to support these designers. Far too often, brilliant designers leave Eindhoven immediately after their studies; I wanted to prevent that. Creativity and generosity are an important part of my DNA. Not that I consider myself super creative; I enjoy creativity and appreciate it on all levels.

My generosity and enthusiasm stem from the desire to share the things I’m most passionate about with others. That’s why I invite designers to share their work and invite people who love design to walk in, listen, ask questions, and be inspired. I call upon companies to pay attention to what is happening here. In time, I also hope that my own daughter will catch an eye for it. I try to create a hopeful environment for her, and for many other children. Nowadays, so much is laminated, covered in glitter, and pre-filled for them. Children need inspiration. They need to be able to discover what is possible when you create something out of curiosity, imagination, and vision. That is also why I wanted to establish this gallery.

Caffeine dealers Sometimes you just have to step off the beaten path. Because it is precisely in places you don’t visit every day that there is still plenty to discover in Eindhoven. Like Landgoed De Grote Beek. Many Eindhoven

While the grounds formerly comprised primarily a closed psychiatric institution, De Grote Beek is now unequivocally connected to the city. The estate is freely accessible and brings participants, Eindhoven residents, and visitors together through nature, culture, and several social enterprises. A fine example of what GGzE calls ‘reverse integration’: not only enabling those seeking help to participate in society but also bringing society inside. A walk or bike ride through De Grote Beek is worthwhile for that reason alone. Amidst the lush greenery, you’ll discover, among other things, a bed & breakfast, a poetry trail, unique animals, a riding school, and a coffee bar that is absolutely worth a stop.

Caffeine Dealers has a lovely terrace and a warm, quirky interior featuring sofas, vintage coffee grinders, quiet spots to work, and, of course, plenty of opportunity to simply sit down for a freshly roasted coffee and a treat but behind that espresso lies a bigger story.

At Caffeine Dealers, people can work on their mental resilience in a positive way and reconnect with society. By roasting, preparing, and serving coffee, participants gain work experience, find structure, and discover where their talents lie. Caffeine Dealers has now been around for ten years and, since February, has been bolstered by Jenko Rademaker, who is part of the team. Jenko previously established a coffee bar in the centre of Eindhoven. During a difficult phase in his life, he ended up at GGzE as a client himself. It was precisely that experience that ultimately led him to the idea of making the switch from his own business to a social enterprise where recovery, craftsmanship, and reintegration into society come together: ‘Here we create opportunities for personal and professional development,’ says Jenko. ‘We support people for whom paid work is not a given. This can be done through day activities, but also with a work-study programme to become a barista. In this way, we help participants reconnect with society step by step. I am proud to be part of this amazing team.’ The circular nature of the place also suits it. The coffee is roasted, served, and sold here. Additionally, you will find local products, such as honey and ceramics from De Woenselse Poort.

The summer holidays are already over. Mediterranean temperatures now feel like the norm in our little country as well. To me, such a summer period neatly cuts the working year in two. Now that I’m in my final week of holiday, I’m slowly getting back to work. Looking back on the first half of the year and looking forward to what is to come. For me, that first half of the year was largely dominated by the elections and the challenges facing our city. My involvement in the city debates at LAB-1, organised by Thom Aussems, and the resulting Manifesto Eindhoven: City of Two Faces, made me think more and more about the story of Eindhoven. Conversations about our growth often revolve around numbers: how many homes, how many jobs, how much economic return? Important questions but isn’t the more fundamental question: who are we becoming as a city through this growth? That Eindhoven is undergoing a leap in scale is hardly up for debate anymore, but growth is more than an economic challenge. It also presents us with a moral question: how do we ensure that the city we create together remains a city in which we relate to one another?

Who makes the city? ‘Success never arises in a vacuum. If this is the case, what do we owe each other?’

However much we like to speak of independence and individual responsibility, a city exists by the grace of people’s mutual interdependence. Perhaps we forget this precisely when things are going well. We talk about talent, innovation, and economic growth, but none of us builds a life alone. Why do we think we are independent, while every day we are dependent on thousands of strangers? I may be highly educated, ambitious, and earn my own income but if the truck driver doesn’t deliver the goods to the supermarket, I have a problem. If the baker doesn’t bake bread, the same applies and if no one collects our rubbish, we discover within a few days how relative our independence is. Our city runs not only on individual achievements, but on mutuality; on thousands of people who, visibly and invisibly, contribute something that allows the whole to function. That is precisely why the message of the Manifesto Eindhoven: City of Two Faces appeals to me so much. The question is not only how much prosperity we create together, but also how that prosperity affects people’s lives. Who benefits from the growth? Who carries it? Who is seen and who remains out of sight? Perhaps, therefore, we should not only ask ourselves who benefits from Eindhoven’s growth, but also who makes it possible. If no one creates this city alone, whose success is it, really? Our lives are much more intertwined than our narrative about independence sometimes suggests. Success never arises in a vacuum. Burst your Bubble

Greetings from... It started with a pair of feet. Flip-flops on a

garden chair, and a butterfly on the strap of the right flip-flop. Chilling in my garden with my new friend. Eight hearts within an hour.

Then came the rest. A parasol over a terrace, in between preparing a high tea. A morning garden, with someone enjoying the silence. Someone weeding. A homemade swimming pool. A bench in the front garden in Utrecht, the resident next to it and right through it all: a drum camp in the mountains of Greece. A market in Cairo. A tent by the sea in Norway. Curling on a glacier in Austria. A mortar and pestle with curry paste in Chiang Mai. Playing Taiko in a department store in Taiwan.

What struck me is not how far we went. It is how close we photographed. Take that literally: a significant portion of the photos were taken from my own sun lounger, with my own feet at the bottom of the frame. No portrait, no pose. A holiday snapshot says: ‘Look where I am.’ These photos say: ‘Look at what I am looking at.’ The second. Almost everyone written in English, including the Dutch weeding our garden, but no one strictly kept track of that. A photo just popped up with ‘On the Moselle near Cochem’ underneath, and that got ten hearts. Under willow branches above a German lawn it said: ‘Niksen in Heidelberg’. A Dutch word for which there is no English equivalent, brought along on holiday, right in the middle of an English sentence. That is how language works here. Nothing is agreed upon and nothing is corrected.

The third, and I find this the most beautiful: when I read all the messages one after another, I could no longer tell who was born here and who came to live here. Next to the mortar with curry paste it said: after 20 years, now back with my family. Someone with an Iranian name was at a drum camp in Greece. Someone with a Dutch name was sitting on a bench in Utrecht. Someone had already had their summer holiday in June, different rhythm, different calendar, and no one thought anything of it. Remove the names, and one group of people remain who are enjoying their garden.

And then this message arrived: ‘Looks like everyone is having lots of fun! So good to see!’ Least fun message might be coming from me. I am workingggg on my laptop. With a photo of exactly that. Four hearts. That is how I recognise the group. Not by the most beautiful photo, but by the fact that someone who is not on holiday is still checking in, and that is perfectly acceptable. By the way, the hearts didn’t follow the kilometers. A bench in Utrecht worked just as well as a glacier, and a tent in Norway just as well as that mortar in Chiang Mai. I Can’t Complain

Altijd aan is a relatable performance about wanting to live, wanting to experience everything, being a lot for others, yet just a little too little for yourself. How do I become normal? Do I even want to be normal? And what is wrong with a bit of chaos and a unique perspective on the world? Join us in search of Pieter’s ‘off switch’ in his wild, witty jungle: his brain!

On a long, yellow conveyor belt, two performers balance between man and machine. In a hypnotic interplay of angular, mechanical movements and soft human touches, they explore the balance between autonomy and dependence. Machinergy shows how important collaboration and trust are, and how, despite our desire to be independent, we still need each other.

With his characteristic dry humor and razor-sharp observations, Marcel van Roosmalen takes you on a quest to answer the question of how his life could have spiraled so massively out of control. Through his birthplace of Arnhem, he examines himself, his success, and the world around him with sharp humor.

An endless world of sound unfolds. In the early 20th century, composers sought a deeper expressiveness. Composers from across Europe revealed new dimensions in sound, rhythm, and structure. Philzuid shines a spotlight on a number of symphonic pioneers, including the genius Maurice Ravel. The main menu features a joyful hymn to life. In his world-famous sound poem Le Poème de l’Extase, the Russian composer Alexander Scriabin paints a mystical vision for orchestra. As never before, he plays with lush harmonies and timbres. The First Violin Concerto by composer Szymanowski is rarely experienced in concert halls. With its rich sound palette, this modern tour de force is right up Sylvia Huang’s alley.

On Saturday, 26th September, Muziekgebouw Eindhoven will be entirely dedicated to Moroccan culture during the Bladi Festival. With live music, a souk, workshops, food, conversations, and numerous other activities, the festival brings the scents, colours, and stories of Morocco to the heart of Eindhoven. Bladi is organised in

collaboration with ambassadors from the Moroccan community and aims not only to introduce people to the

richness of Moroccan culture but also to provide space for meeting and conversation. Loubna Bakra, one of the driving forces behind the festival, explains how Bladi originated, what role it can play in Eindhoven, and why everyone is welcome to experience it. FILE-ALT & IMAGE MUZIEKGEBOUW EINDHOVEN

How did the idea for the Bladi Festival come about, and what does the festival mean to you personally? Muziekgebouw Eindhoven contacted me and a number of other Moroccan women because, following the example of other cultural festivals, they also wanted to organise a Moroccan festival. The Muziekgebouw always does this in collaboration with ambassadors from the community, and so I became one of the ambassadors for the first event. During one of the very first brainstorming sessions, we arrived at the name Bladi, which means ‘my country’. It also held a double meaning for us. The Netherlands is our country, too, regardless of the language in which you refer to it.

‘Bladi is a place for the city and all its inhabitants’

I have a deep affection for the cultural sector, and I thought it was fantastic to be able to express my cultural background at such a fantastic location in the city. What role does the festival play in a city like Eindhoven? During the first event, Bladi was truly a broad introduction to Moroccan culture. We wanted to display our hospitality to all visitors. At the same time, we felt it was important that the Moroccan community claim the place and the festival as their own. The Muziekgebouw is a venue for the city and all its inhabitants. Eindhoven has traditionally had a large Moroccan community. What would we like to see here in terms of programming, and what conversations do we, as a community, want to initiate in the city? In that respect, Bladi’s role is twofold. On the one hand, removing unfamiliarity with the people and culture, and on the other, organising a festival in which we can explore themes that are relevant within the community ourselves and society. What would I say to someone who knows nothing about Moroccan culture yet? Why should that person come to Bladi specifically? Definitely because of the conviviality and the experience. With Bladi, we really try to bring the scents, colours, and conviviality of Morocco to the Muziekgebouw. In addition, we also have a substantive programme, such as a panel discussion. Bladi Festival is an accessible way to discover and experience the diversity of Moroccan culture, right in the heart of Eindhoven city centre. What feeling do you hope visitors go home with at the end of the day? I hope they are surprised, have met new people, and simply generally enjoyed the day. That they share enthusiastic stories with others and are already looking forward to the next edition. Bladi in 3 words? Oh, this is a tough one. Can I make it five? Welcoming, lively, sensory, uninhibited, inspiring!

Stravinsky’s Sacre du Printemps

Britten’s War Requiem

Le Sacre du Printemps by Russian composer Igor Stravinsky is one of the most revolutionary works ever written. The unprecedented thrust of this majestic spring sacrifice still captures the imagination. The dance-like rhythm and emotional language of the Sacre have inspired countless composers. As part of the TROMP Competition, masterpieces from the twentieth century are being brought back to life. Stravinsky’s big bang is accompanied by two kindred, ritualistic orchestral works. The atmospheric rainbow hues of Claude Debussy’s Prelude l’après-midi d’un faune set an unheard-of dream world ablaze. An extraordinary percussion spectacle is unleashed in the meditative From me flows what you call time by Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu. Four percussionists led by specialist Dominique Vieeshouwers are taking on the challenge together with Philzuid.

The horrors of both world wars were unprecedented. In 1962, composer Benjamin Britten completed a moving Requiem for all war victims. His timeless War Requiem touches heart and soul. As a convinced pacifist, he presented an imposing work for three vocal soloists, choirs, organ, and large orchestra. The inspiration for this was the resurrected Coventry Cathedral, which had been so severely damaged during WWII. Britten chose the Latin Mass for the Dead as the basis. But his requiem truly takes flight thanks to the brilliant poetry of poet and soldier Wilfred Owen. In it, he recounts the devastating trench warfare of WWI. Philzuid joins forces with the choirs Groot Omroepkoor, Studium Chorale, and Schola Puerorum to perform Britten’s masterpiece.

Something bad. And now she is sitting in the hospital waiting room, with a helium balloon in her hands that says ‘sorry’ on it. Being a team with your bestie is the coolest thing there is. Until you grow apart. Until you become disappointed in the other person. Or feel betrayed. Until that bestie suddenly develops a worldview that is radically opposed to yours. Until one day you get so angry that she does something she couldn’t undo. Not on purpose. It just happens. Anne, 11 years old, says sorry anyway is about friendship, but also about how easily we form an image of someone – and how difficult it is when that image is no longer accurate. How small cracks can grow into a chasm. How you sometimes find yourself at odds with each other without knowing exactly why.

SintLucas designs for the Eindhoven Region Library

As part of the Eindhoven Region Library’s 110th anniversary, the library and Spatial Design & Product students from SintLucas joined forces. Under the banner ‘Come together’, the students delved into the world of social design. The assignment? To design unique meeting tables that stimulate encounters and interaction between visitors in a unexpected way. For the students, it was a special step, as it was the first time they worked for and with a real client. SintLucas lecturer Sofie Boonman explains: ‘This assignment really brought design and social design together. The students were greatly challenged to take the library visitors into account. After all, not everyone comes directly looking for interaction. So how do you encourage that without forcing it? I think they succeeded incredibly well with all the tables.’ The result is an inspiring rotating exhibition full of inventive and tangible designs. For instance, visitors will discover a special book table where reading tips can be left and where you can share a piece of

your own story, an ‘Eindhoven table’ featuring iconic buildings to touch, and a design that appeals to the senses with tactile words and braille. Eight of these tables are set up in the Witte Dame library, two are located in the Best Library, and soon tables will also travel to the various libraries in the region. The exhibition aligns seamlessly with the Vision 2035 that the Eindhoven Region Library presented in this anniversary year, with the central theme ‘Close by and for everyone’. According to Director Albert Kivits, authentic creativity is indispensable in this regard: ‘The library wants to be a place where ideas sprout and people are inspired. The meeting tables therefore represent only the beginning of the collaboration.’ Later this year, new designs from the SintLucas Digital Design & Motion and Styling disciplines will also be on display in the library.

GALERIEindhoven With the GALERIEindhoven project, we aim to meet a need to present the visual arts without a selection committee, balloting conditions, and all kinds of other requirements that raise barriers. From our free creative perspective, these guidelines and requirements hinder the process of truly creating what the artist needs. If you leave it completely open, what happens then? Our call to have our large gallery at your disposal for a weekend has resulted in a wide variety of applications. It is fascinating to see how diverse the artistic landscape is. The CreActive Hub, a group of creative expats, starts on the weekend of August 28-29-30. The series is followed by TPN-E on the weekend of September 4-5-6 with the group exhibition Between Places Contemporary Turkish Artists in Eindhoven. On September 11-12-13, Robbert Nispen takes over the gallery with Diaspora, a collection of diverse paintings. Roel Kruijer presents his spatial installation KOSMOS on the weekend of September 18-19-20. To conclude the month on September 25-26-27, François Eyck presents the photo series Donker Bos.

On Saturday, September 19, artist Danielle Lemaire will be present at the exhibition De geschiedenis is mijn gezelschap (History is my company). This Meet & Greet is a wonderful opportunity to delve a little deeper into her working methods. The exhibition at Museum W is on view until Sunday, September 20, 2026. In four rooms, Lemaire takes you on her artistic journey of discovery into former life in the Dutch East Indies. Her family history takes center stage in this. She draws inspiration from historical archival material from the colonial period, as well as personal memories and diary fragments from her ancestors. In this way, she combines diverse themes such as religion, spirituality, colonialism, and melancholy in her work into a layered and poetic image.

Participation is free; you only pay the entrance fee to the museum (8 euros). Young people aged 18 and under, Museumkaart holders, Friends of Museum W, Vereniging Rembrandt, and ICOM have free admission.

Danielle Lemaire (1967) has been active as a multimedia artist for over thirty years. She creates paintings, drawings, installations, tapestries, sculptures, films, and audio works. Lemaire studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Tilburg. Her work has previously been exhibited at the Stedelijk Museum Breda, the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, and the Missiemuseum Steyl. She has also exhibited abroad, including a solo exhibition in Paris and group exhibitions in Japan, China, and Indonesia.

Ten recent Design Academy Eindhoven alumni, all nominated for the Kazerne Design Award 2026, showcase work that is beautiful, meaningful, and hopeful. Such as Benjamin Onno Dikmans, who grows local food himself with neighbors from inside shipping containers. Valdís Steinarsdóttir, who recovers gold from electronic waste. Or winner Da Trash Club, who use humorous performances and well-designed costumes to expose the fact that something you throw away isn’t really gone. Curious about all the stories? Iris Penning

‘I hope to bring the Dutch language to people in a nice way’ At fourteen, she was already in the spotlight singing, to show everyone what she loves doing most. Iris Penning (32) is a professional musician, poet, organist, and was Eindhoven’s longest-serving city poet from 2020 to 2024. ‘You can connect people with the city in a creative way,’ says Iris. rom a young age, language played an important role in Iris’s life. ‘My mother read to me from books by Annie M.G. Schmidt. As soon as I was in third grade, I started making up my own rhymes.’ Writing lyrics grew into an important part of who she is. ‘That passion for language has always been there.’ Her love for language soon went hand in hand with singing. ‘I always sang all day long, about everything going on in my head.’ ‘When I was in the first year of secondary school, I really wanted to combine those two passions.’ She started writing songs and organised an open mic night at her high school in Eindhoven. ‘I wanted not only music, but also other art forms like dance and poetry to have a platform.’ By performing at a young age, Iris quickly ended up in various places. ‘I went around bars in the city and asked if I could perform there.’ As soon as she heard that the company was getting a new headquarters in 2017, she immediately called the Eindhovens Dagblad. ‘I asked if I could perform on their first working days, and I was allowed to!’ From that moment on, Iris was well-known to the journalists. ‘That way, I could always call the newspaper whenever I organised something.’

Eindhoven as inspiration

For Iris, inspiration for her songs and poems is easy to find. ‘There is so much going on in the streets. I write down what I see. There is always something pleasing to turn into lyrics.’ She brought that perspective with her into her role as city poet, a title she won after an election contest. After four years in that position, she wrote a poetry collection about Eindhoven: Sta ik hier een trui te zijn tussen alle stropdassen. ‘In addition, as a poetic reporter, I now bring the city’s news to people in a poetic guise.’

Collaborations

Outside of her own work, Iris also actively seeks out collaborations. For instance, she co-wrote an album by Birgit Schuurmans. ‘Her father found me on Spotify and recommended that she ask me to write the songs. That was incredibly fun to do.’ She also collaborated with electronic dance music artists such as Droeloe and Trails. ‘As a creator, it is really important to enter into those partnerships and let yourself be inspired by new places and encounters.’ To be able to share that inspiration with others in Eindhoven, Iris established a stage in the De Wielewaal forest called Stichting Kunstival. The desire for a new creative spot in the city prompted her to write a project plan immediately. ‘We renovated it and threw it open right away. We made a bar out of a few planks from the ceiling,’ Iris says with a laugh. According to the singer, it is important that these sorts of creative spaces are not only located in the city centre. ‘The city is so big, and not everyone wants to be in the hustle and bustle. Here, people can watch performances but also walk through the forest in peace and quiet and look at the stars at night.’

Continuing to develop

One of the songs she is most proud of is Dan Maar Genieten. ‘I wrote it after my father passed away. It stems from the poem I wrote for his funeral card.’ Those eventually became the verses. ‘I had the words “dan maar genieten” in my head for a while, and suddenly I discovered that those two things belonged together.’ The song was finished within half an hour. Through her own art and by creating a place where people can share their own talents and knowledge, Iris Penning contributes to the cultural city. As a creator, she notices how important it is to continue developing in this way in a city that is constantly changing. ‘It can be challenging to maintain your place, which is why it is important to stay active.’ That is why she enjoys continuing to inspire others through her work. ‘I hope to bring the Dutch language to people in a pleasing way.

Valkenswaard transforms into a colourful sea of flowers. Admire the impressive parade floats, in which happiness, cherished memories, and favourite moments come to life in thousands of flowers. Each neighbourhood interprets the theme “The King is Rich” in its own way, with creations full of colour, music, and imagination. From youthful nostalgia to moments of pure happiness: optimism, humour, and zest for life take centre stage.

The centre is buzzing with music, theatre, and art. Be surprised by funny and musical street acts, such as The Love and Peach Police, Taximan, and Airkes Machine, which add extra atmosphere to the walking routes. On the Corridor, Wedertklank provides a pleasant, musical stopover.

Millions of people in Ethiopia & Eritrea celebrate Meskel, a festival of gratitude & togetherness. The celebration begins days in advance: elaborate cooking takes place and the aroma of spicy dishes hangs everywhere. Injera is often served: a soft, slightly sour pancake made from teff flour that serves as both a plate and cutlery. Dishes are served on it, including Doro Wat, a spiced chicken stew with boiled eggs.
