Global Flavors & Traditions A Little Something for a Rainy Day: to share and pass on
Where might we cross paths? A city can grow without necessarily becoming bigger for everyone. Jobs, buildings, people, and ideas are added to the mix. But what does that mean for you if you can barely afford the rent, or if you are still looking for a place where you truly feel at home? In this issue of Eindless, Thom Aussems poses a question that resonates with me: who benefits from economic growth? His plea is clear: let everyone share in the prosperity. Bernice Kamphuis shows how you can take the first step yourself; she saw greenery disappearing from her neighbourhood and decided to act. The “Appeltje voor de Dorst” (Apple for a Rainy Day) initiative highlights people who started the same way: they saw a need and did something for others and with apples from the Philips Fruit Garden, the act of sharing takes on a very tangible form. Art, too, can bring us closer to one another. World Press Photo brings stories from across the globe to the TU/e campus. Museum W explores boundaries, not just between countries, but also between people, generations, and our ideas about who we are. What happens when you look at things from a different perspective? October offers plenty of opportunities to do just that. Meet the nominees for the Eindhoven Culture Prize, visit the Design Academy Eindhoven open day, or pick an event from the agenda that you wouldn’t normally attend.

‘You shouldn’t wait for someone else to do it’ Bernice Kamphuis knows that anyone can have an effect. She spotted a problem: urban greenery in Eindhoven was simply being ripped out. Instead of doing nothing, she decided to act. This led to her initiative Struikroven
(literally ‘shrub-robbing’ or rescuing plants) and a role as Climate Mayor. Bernice’s actions inspire and connect the people of Eindhoven, encouraging them to improve their city together. BYLAUDONNE ROOS & PHOTOGRAPHY PATRICK POST, SABINE KAMPHUIS
Born and raised in Eindhoven, Bernice watched the city evolve throughout her childhood. After living in the Randstad for a while, she returned to the ‘City of Light.’ She ended up in a neighbourhood slated for demolition behind the Woenselse Markt. Amidst this literal construction site, she noticed something: all the urban greenery was disappearing. ‘I saw entire front and back gardens vanishing. From my window, I could see an oasis of back gardens that were scheduled to be removed in phases. That had to be stopped.’
Not on a Greenpeace boat, but ‘shrub-robbing’ in Eindhoven
Bernice has been a nature lover since childhood. At school, she ran a little Greenpeace Club where she and her friends would pretend to be racing across the sea on a Greenpeace ship. That passion sparked a desire to save nature: ‘I think a lot of people have ideas about doing something about an problem. I decided not to wait around but to take the first step myself. I started talking about it, and almost everyone in the neighbourhood reacted enthusiastically.’ At an information evening hosted by Trefpunt Groen (Green Meeting Point), she met someone who had rescued urban greenery from demolition sites. This practice, which he called Struikroven, was exactly what she wanted to do. ‘I was floored,’ she laughs. ‘I thought: there’s a name for that? That’s fantastic.’ The two joined forces, and the first initiative was born. This initial Struikroof (Shrub Rescue) campaign, aimed at preserving greenery in Bernice’s neighbourhood, was a huge success. More initiatives followed, involving volunteers from across the city. Scouting together for plants to save felt like a treasure hunt that brought ‘all of Eindhoven’ together. Bernice was so driven that Struikroven grew into a foundation and a nationwide community. Through this, Eindhoven immediately showed the rest of the country how a city can become greener.
A true climate hero
This is clearly visible in practice. For example, on Boschdijk, which was improved thanks to Bernice’s efforts alongside residents from the Limbeek and Hemelrijke neighbourhoods. She now cycles daily along what her neighbours call ‘Bernice Lane.’ ‘Being able to contribute to this project makes me proud and happy.’ But Bernice’s effect extends beyond just one street. In 2021, she served a one-year term as Eindhoven’s Climate Mayor. This marked the launch of her ‘Climate Heroes’ campaign, which highlighted nature volunteers through advertisements in bus shelters and across the city. Her ‘don’t just think, do’ mentality makes her an inspiration to the people of Eindhoven.
GLOBAL WOMAN & BRAINPORT
Bernice Kamphuis
Want to make a big difference in Eindhoven but don’t know where to start? Through the Bureau Burgerberaad Foundation, Bernice is building a nationwide movement to give all residents a voice and empower them to come up with their own solutions to societal challenges.
You, too, can make a difference
One person might have an idea, but getting all of Eindhoven moving is a collective effort. Bernice demonstrates that it is possible for an individual to have an effect. ‘Residents know their neighbourhood best,’ she explains. ‘You shouldn’t wait for someone else to do it. If something frustrates you or you have an idea, you need to act because you are the one feeling or conceiving it. That is reason enough to take the initiative. Talk to your neighbours and find out which local organisations are active. Just get started.’ There are always others who also want to do something to improve the neighbourhood. Word of this is spreading like wildfire: projects are springing up everywhere that tangibly improve the city and bring people together. From greener streets to safer, more pleasant public spaces, Bernice demonstrates that every small step contributes to a greener, better Eindhoven. ‘We are like droplets forming a sea together.’ Her approach is living proof that anyone with a vision can truly make a difference.

BETWEEN CULTURES: EINDHOVEN
Thom Aussems
Eindhoven, city of two fac Whether you look up at the industrial concrete of Strijp-S or gaze once more at the glowing Lichttoren (Light Tower), you are seeing Thom Aussems’ legacy. For nearly 25 years, the former director of housing corporation Sint Trudo did far more than manage real estate in a city undergoing profound social and economic change; he gave new meaning to Eindhoven’s architectural and industrial heritage. As our city rapidly evolves into the Silicon Valley of Europe, this urban strategist and author asks us to reflect on the city we are building together. His social manifesto, Eindhoven, City of Two Faces, is a call to look more closely.
I
BY AILÉN GAMBERONI & GORDON • PHOTOGRAPHY DIEWKE VAN DEN HEUVEL
n an unstoppable stream of words, Aussems shares his research and theories, fueled by both formal study and observations made during his bicycle rides. His perspective on Eindhoven began to take shape in 1971, when he swapped his law studies in Tilburg for community development work at the Den Elzent Social Academy. After gaining experience in Rotterdam’s urban renewal efforts, he returned in 1994 as director of Sint Trudo. A maverick thinker, he saw not obsolete space in the city’s vacant factories, but art, culture, and raw energy. In doing so, he helped transform the 27-hectare Strijp-S site into the creative urban district it is today. Since leaving Trudo in 2018, he has continued to follow Eindhoven’s development. He has published books on the city’s recent history. Now, he has released a manifesto with an urgent political and social message: the booming high-tech sector is making wealthy residents richer, while the average Eindhoven resident struggles with stagnating wages and unaffordable housing. His plea: ensure everyone shares in the benefits of economic growth. “We are expecting 107,000 additional jobs. That requires 600 hectares of business parks and 100,000 homes. The costs land here. So do the problems. People must move and commute. We face increased traffic and air pollution, and prices will undoubtedly rise.” To understand how Eindhoven reached this point, Thom takes us back in time. “My connection to the city and region goes back to 1971, when I came here to study. It is an advantage that I was here during what I would call the heyday of Philips. The fairy tale.” His story begins in 1815, when Eindhoven was still a modest town on the River Dommel, dominated by agriculture and the textile and tobacco trades. The abundance of poor, low-cost labour later made the region attractive to industry. With the arrival of Philips in 1891, Eindhoven grew into a company town. Rapid expansion attracted a large workforce, transformed the regional infrastructure, and ultimately led to a merger with five surrounding villages to form Greater Eindhoven. During the interwar period, Philips and the Roman Catholic Church largely shaped daily life and social relations. ‘That period saw an intense struggle between the Catholic community and Philips, including a prolonged strike. The outcome was essentially a draw: the Church had to accept that the industry was there to stay, while Philips had to acknowledge that it was operating in a deeply Catholic region. Once the Church realised it could not halt industrial development or the employment of women and children in factories, it shifted its strategy. This gave rise to what I call the “Catholic planning system”: neighbourhoods of 6,000 residents with a church and school at their heart, low-rise housing instead of apartment blocks, and 25 percent middle-class homes. The aim was to foster social cohesion between workers and the middle class.’
6
‘Let everyone share in the economic growth’ After the war, Philips grew into the Netherlands’ largest private-sector employer. The company effectively ran its own mini-welfare state, providing housing, education, and healthcare. At the same time, the public welfare state was taking shape. Incomes were relatively high; a car, a television, or a weekend getaway were becoming affordable for more people. ‘People felt that everything was taken care of, from cradle to grave. That fairy tale began to unravel in the 1980s.’ With Operation Centurion, mass layoffs at Philips, and the bankruptcy of DAF, that fairy tale came to a definitive end. By early 1994, according to Aussems, some 44.7 percent of the workforce was unemployed. Later, Philips’ headquarters also left Eindhoven. The city had to reinvent its economy. Aussems views the period from 1994 to 2010 as a time of recovery. According to the prevailing narrative regarding the region’s resurgence, this recovery was driven by the “Triple Helix” model involving business, government, and knowledge institutions. Aussems disputes this. His research indicates that the regional economic recovery was driven entirely by the growth of the service sector, with education and healthcare, the so-called “Eds and Meds”, acting as key catalysts. While the manufacturing sector’s gross value added increased, industrial employment fell by several thousand jobs during this period, particularly in Eindhoven. That changed starting in 2010. In what he calls the ‘Miracle of Veldhoven,’ the high-tech industry experienced strong growth, including in terms of employment. Yet Aussems does not attribute this development to a visionary Triple Helix strategy. According to him, the foundation lay in a century of Philips, and the four core competencies cultivated there: manufacturing, the ability to make virtually anything, engineering, R&D, and design. Moreover, many of the people who shaped the new high-tech industry came from the ‘Philips school.’ Companies like ASML, NXP, and VDL were able to grow further on this fertile ground.
ces
‘Two phases, Two stories’ 1994 - 2010: From crisis to recovery
According to Aussems, economic recovery did not stem from the high-tech industry but from growth in the service sector, with education and healthcare acting as key drivers. In fact, industrial employment declined during this period.
2010 - 2025: ‘The Miracle of Veldhoven’
Subsequently, the high-tech sector did experience strong growth, including in terms of employment. Aussems views this not as the result of the Triple Helix model, but primarily as the product of the ‘fertile soil’ laid down by a century of Philips: manufacturing, engineering, R&D, and design.
The Brainport ecosystem also grew out of this legacy. However, the prosperity it brought has not reached everyone. Aussems sees a deep socio-economic divide between highly educated international knowledge workers and residents with vocational backgrounds who are struggling with soaring housing prices, a rising cost of living, and job insecurity. Eindhoven managed to reinvent its economy without a blueprint. But now, a plan is needed to counter social polarisation and share prosperity with all residents. If that doesn’t happen, areas like Woensel-Zuid and Woensel-Noord, where problems are piling up, risk becoming powder kegs. They are becoming increasingly disconnected from the city centre. For Aussems, the path forward is clear: ‘We need more co-operative housing models, more social housing, and more public green spaces. The benefits must accrue to everyone, to all segments of the population.’
THOM AUSSEMS Thom Aussems has been observing Eindhoven’s development for over fifty years. In his manifesto Eindhoven, City of Two Faces he poses the question: who benefits from this economic growth?

Burst your Bubble
An alluring prospect: Eindhoven twenty years after the first Burst Your Bubble BY INEKE HURKMANS
City of Light, 2046 | It is a Tuesday evening in September 2046, and the light in Eindhoven is soft. Not the GLOW light of November, but simply the late afternoon sun streaming through the windows of the Muziekgebouw, casting a diagonal glow across a hall filled with people who didn’t know each other twenty years ago, and who have since forgotten that they ever didn’t.
At a table by the window sits a woman in her early thirties. Her name is Amara, or Femke, or Nguyen; in 2046, it matters less than it did back then. In 2026, she was a teenager sitting in a classroom in Woensel. One morning, the digital whiteboard began to move: first an animation appeared, then a single question. A set of cards lay on the desks. The teacher sat on her hands. Whoever drew a card would stand up and look for someone they didn’t know very well yet. For a fourteen-year-old, it was the first time an adult created space and then stepped out of it. Twenty years later, she does the same thing herself. On the campus, she leads a team where half the colleagues originally arrived as “internationals.” In Eindhoven, that word now sounds like “telephone booth”: everyone remembers what it once meant, but it’s a thing of the past. When her team hits a roadblock, she lays the cards on the table. She puts one question on the screen and sits down. On her hands. It still works. Where did Burst Your Bubble work? Not in buildings. It filled intriguing spaces with that single question, a set of cards, a screen that started to move, and then nothing else. People did the rest themselves. It worked within people, and that is the only place where inclusion can ever truly work. It started small. Two sign-up forms, one for locals, one for internationals and a single sentence that said it all: “Wherever you were born, it’s great to know one another.” People stepped out of their comfort zones and discovered they were less different from each other than they had thought. They took that experience home, to work, and to their children. Then came the classroom and that made all the difference. Adults who step out of their bubbles do so for just one evening a year. Children who learn to do it at twelve will keep doing it for the rest of their lives, without even thinking about it. That first cohort is now serving on the City Council, driving the bus to the campus, designing chip-making machines, or baking bread on Kruisstraat. “Who grows bigger here?” children ask each other in the playground. Eindhoven did it its own way, and perhaps that is the most beautiful part. This city doesn’t believe in grand gestures, but in making things: putting something together at Strijp-T and seeing if it works. Here, inclusion didn’t become a policy document but a design process: start small, test, adjust, pass it on. Eindhoven didn’t build a physical bridge between the campus and Woensel. Instead, it waited twenty years until the children who had met at fourteen became the bridge themselves.
s W h a t doe look like inclusion cceeds? when it su onder fully W . g in r o B boring.
What does successful inclusion look like? Boring. Wonderfully boring. No one uses the word anymore, just as no one talks about electricity: you only notice it when the power goes out. The Evoluon, that massive saucer-shaped building on the edge of town, is still there, yet no one has ever noticed that it is Eindhoven’s biggest bubble.
Back to that Tuesday evening. A boy of sixteen stands up at the table by the window. He walks over to the screen, starts the animation, and types a question, one we cannot yet read in 2026, about something we do not yet know, involving people we do not yet know. The adults at his table sit back. They sit on their hands and that, precisely, is the prospect that beckons. Not a city without differences, but a city that has mastered the art of reaching out to one another. Twenty years is exactly one generation. Precisely the time it takes to turn a free evening at the Muziekgebouw into a reflex, and it begins, it has already begun, with a single question on a screen, a stack of cards, and one adult keeping quiet.

In the musical and humorous Moonlight Motel, Steyn portrays dozens of different characters in a virtuoso theatrical tour de force. He transforms his experiences in a homeless shelter into a hallucinatory theatrical journey exploring life on the streetstouching on success and failure, fortune and misfortune, justice and injustice, fiction and reality. By the end, he asks himself where his home actually is and whether he will ever find it.

The Analogues present: The Young Analogues
Elgar’s Cello Concerto and The Firebird
Best of The Beatles ’62 - ‘65 The Young Analogues bring the early Beatles years back to life. Expect an authentic sound, vintage instruments, and an energetic tribute to the greatest hits from ‘62–’65. This show, Best of The Beatles ‘62–’65, takes the ‘Red Album’ as its guiding thread. The repertoire is less grand and orchestrated than the band’s later work, yet it includes an impressive string of number-one hits. The Analogues proudly present a new generation of Beatles interpreters—fulfilling the very mission they set out with from the start: keeping the music of The Beatles alive.
Music has a unique ability to uplift and inspire the human spirit. With his sublime Firebird suite, Igor Stravinsky casts a spell over every listener. In 1910, this ballet score marked the major breakthrough for the young, daring composer. The mythical Firebird’s flaming feathers symbolize resurrection and a sense of bliss. The tempestuous pulse of Stravinsky’s music leaves no one unmoved. Edward Elgar’s renowned Cello Concerto evokes that very same sensation. Philzuid has now engaged the Belgian-Israeli cellist Liav Kerbel to bring an imaginative touch to Elgar’s dream-like score. Philzuid also gives the floor to young Finnish conducting talent Emilia Hoving to champion this timeless music.

In 1962, composer Benjamin Britten completed a requiem mass for all victims of war; his timeless War Requiem touches the heart and soul. A committed pacifist, he created an imposing work for three vocal soloists, choirs, organ, and a large orchestra. The work was commissioned for the rebuilt Coventry Cathedral, which had been devastated during the Second World War. Britten based the composition on the Latin Requiem Mass, but the work is truly elevated by the brilliant poetry of soldier-poet Wilfred Owen. Philzuid joins forces with the Groot Omroepkoor, Studium Chorale, and Schola Puerorum choirs to perform Britten’s masterpiece.

‘From stage lighting to coffee’ Muziekgebouw Eindhoven (MgE) is about much more than just what happens on stage. Behind every concert,
festival, or project lies a world of people, stories, and collaborations. It is well worth looking behind the scenes to discover what goes into the day-to-day operations of a concert hall. This time, we explore the question: ‘How sustainable can a concert hall be?’ BY MUZIEKGEBOUW EINDHOVEN
Anyone who immediately associates sustainability in a concert hall with solar panels, waste sorting, and turning the heating down a notch isn’t wrong, of course. But behind the scenes at MgE, the concept is a bit broader than that. Britt Baggermans, a project manager at MgE who is also jointly responsible for themes such as sustainability and inclusion, is the perfect person to explain this.
From stage lighting to coffee
So, how do you make a building that welcomes thousands of visitors, artists, and staff members every year more sustainable? The answer lies largely in hundreds of choices, both big and small. ‘Sustainability is actually woven into every part of the building,’ says Britt. ‘Some measures are highly visible, while others go almost unnoticed by visitors. After all, there is much more to a musical evening than just the artist stepping onto the stage at 8:15 PM. Lights are on, cleaning and dishwashing take place, artists travel, visitors arrive, suppliers come and go, and thousands of people drink a cup of coffee or a glass of wine each year. You can consider sustainability in all these areas. For instance, our building lighting is entirely LED-based, and we use 100 percent European wind energy.’ ‘But we also consider how to make things more sustainable when it comes to our choice of meals, office paper, and the coffee and tea we serve.’ According to Britt, it is precisely the cumulative effect of all these choices that makes the difference. ‘You don’t always have to look for that one major measure. If you ask yourself with every decision whether something could be done more sustainably, you end up making significant progress.’
Sometimes, it comes down to unexpected details. ‘Traditionally, artists were given a bouquet of flowers after a performance. We started thinking about that, too. Could we do it differently? Nowadays, we present a reusable felt bouquet. It might seem like a small thing, but it demonstrates that sustainability plays a role in so many different areas.’
Gold-standard confirmation
The significant strides made in recent years have also recently received official recognition. Muziekgebouw Eindhoven was awarded the Green Key Gold Certificate, the highest level of the international sustainability label for the hospitality industry. With this certification, Muziekgebouw Eindhoven demonstrates that cultural experiences and sustainable business practices go hand in hand. For Britt, the certificate is primarily a confirmation of a process that has been underway for some time. ‘Of course, we are proud to have achieved Green Key Certification. It reflects the steps we have taken together over the past few years. But a certificate like this doesn’t mean you can simply sit back and say, ‘We’re sustainable now.’
MUZIEKGEBOUW EINDHOVEN
Sustainability Music Building Eindhoven
And tomorrow?
This means the answer to the question “How sustainable can a concert hall be?” is never truly final. ‘With almost everything we do, you can ask yourself: can this be done more smartly, more consciously, or more sustainably?’ says Britt. ‘Not everything can change overnight. But if we keep asking ourselves that question, we will keep moving forward.’

Symphonic music, but with a delightful twist. Twentiethcentury composers like Maurice Ravel and other innovators happily flouted the rules. They turned the symphonic concerto form inside out and made music history. Ravel created unexpected sonic poetry filled with fairytale imagery. His suite Ma Mère l’Oye (Mother Goose) began as a piano duet but evolved into an enchanting orchestral work. In it, he takes us on a journey through the world of classic fairytales—from Sleeping Beauty to Beauty and the Beast. His Piano Concerto also showcases his mastery; French pianist Jonathan Fournel (winner of the 2021 Queen Elisabeth Competition) puts his left hand to the test.

In Wachtend op de dood, Maarten Heijmans and Xander Vrienten explore the surprising parallels between Dutch kleinkunst (intimate, lyrical cabaret-style music) and American folk, blues, and country. Backed by a strong band, they bring these two worlds together through new songs and classics, sharing stories of loss, longing, irony, and everyday life. The performance strikes a balance between the Jordaan and the Mississippi, centering on a single question: what do you do while waiting for death? Live.

During the autumn break, the Van Gogh Village Museum is once again hosting a special activity that children can join for free. On 20 October, between 12:30 and 16:30, it is time to create an artwork using secret writing. You draw or write on paper with a candle and then experiment with watercolours. At first, nothing seems to happen, but as you brush the watercolour over the page, your drawing magically appears. There is plenty to do at the museum before or after the activity. Admission to the museum is free for children up to the age of 17, and includes a free scavenger hunt and a youth audio tour.

Creative Personal Writing Series: Inspired by Words
Why do we talk so little about non-monogamy, even though it plays a role in the lives of more and more people? In this edition of Spill the Tea, we explore the taboo surrounding alternative relationship models together. Why do we find it daunting to be open about this, and how can we create more space for diverse forms of connection? Expert Sarai Erkens (De Middelste Lepel) kicks off the evening with insights from her professional practice. Afterward, you will engage in small-group discussions led by host Yma (founder of Tabeau). This is not a support group for those with personal experience, but an open, non-judgmental evening for anyone who is curious, has critical questions, or wants to understand the societal perspective. Come along to listen and join the conversation - and gain new insights that make it easier to discuss this topic in the future!
Whether you are a seasoned writer or just starting out, this creative personal writing course takes you on a writing adventure through short, accessible exercises. Guided by instructor Cecilia van der Geest, you will discover how book quotes, lines of poetry, graffiti, or proverbs can serve as the perfect spark for your own stories. Over the course of three sessions, you will explore various writing styles and gather a wealth of practical tips to use effortlessly at home. Experience the joy of writing freely, without worrying about spelling errors. The course (for ages 16+) takes place on three Friday mornings: 16 October, 6 & 20 November, from 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM. A single ticket secures your spot for all three sessions. Bring your curiosity along and discover what your pen has to say!
We live in an era where we are constantly connected, yet rarely truly meet one another. We often stay within our own bubbles, surrounded by people who think and live just as we do. But what happens when we consciously step outside that comfort zone? In this talk, author Steven van den Heuvel shares stories and insights drawn from psychology, philosophy, and sociology. Drawing on his new book, he explores what it takes to remain open to a different perspective—especially when it challenges us. It is about listening without judgment, curiosity, and the courage to let go of our convictions. This is no ordinary lecture, but a dynamic afternoon where we put the art of meeting into practice together. Come along to listen, share your thoughts, and—above all—meet others!

border defines more than just where one country ends and another begins. The artists demonstrate this through a diverse range of works, spanning sculpture, photography, and painting.
Kiki van Eijk and Joost van Bleiswijk, who together form the Eindhovenbased design studio Kiki & Joost, are responsible for the exhibition’s design. Spoken word performances by Salma Ali, the former Weert City Poet, can be heard in every gallery. Museum W focuses on the themes of identity and finding meaning in life. Eindhoven-based curator Haiko Sleumer curated the exhibition based on these concepts, as borders shape people’s lives and identities. Haiko explains: “Many people appreciate the clarity and sense of stability that borders provide. They can offer freedom yet simultaneously act as a hindrance. Think of national borders, or the social and normative boundaries that prevent you from exploring your own identity and being yourself. By adopting a more fluid approach to these rigid dividing lines, we create space for other perspectives and stories. The artists in this exhibition show alternative ways of dealing with these sorts of borders.” Diversity was central to Haiko’s selection of artists and artworks: “When curating the exhibition, I paid attention to the balance between men and women and ensured a variety of art forms ranging from textiles and sculpture to photography. Established international names are contributing, alongside emerging Dutch artists. Each brings their own stories and perspectives to the theme.” He describes the exhibition as a sensory experience that also incorporates poems for each gallery written by Salma Ali. “I hope visitors leave the exhibition feeling inspired and prompted to reflect on the boundaries they themselves draw in their daily lives. But what I find most rewarding is when people recognise themselves and feel represented.”
Living Alone (Together) is a long-running art project by Hanneke Wetzer. During the first coronavirus lockdown, she bought a lifelike silicone sex doll online: Nadiah. “I craved social contact, but I didn’t want to infect anyone or get infected myself. So, Nadiah became my lockdown buddy. After the pandemic, I couldn’t get rid of her. I’ve become too attached; she’s my housemate.” Nadiah also became the model for a series of black-and-white photographs documenting their daily life. They eat together, play with the cats, celebrate holidays, and watch Netflix. Hanneke shares the images on the Instagram account @me_and_my_dollfriend, which receives many positive reactions. Yet boundaries play a role here, too especially regarding consent and physical contact: “I know from personal experience that people always want to touch Nadiah. They’re curious about what she feels like. In the exhibition, I invite people to resist that urge. To ask themselves: why do I want to touch her? And what makes me think I have the right to do so?” Hanneke marvels at this fascination. “You wouldn’t just go around squeezing a stranger’s arms or feet, would you? So why do people do that with Nadiah? Because she’s a sex doll, her body suddenly seems to become public property. I hope to make people aware of their own boundaries and those of others. Perhaps we could all stand to be a little kinder.” Hanneke’s series Beings (see the cover), featuring ink drawings of naked bodies, is also part of the exhibition. Four of the drawings have been enlarged into wallpaper. While Nadiah raises questions about touch, this series sees Hanneke exploring how we look at bodies: “Some of the drawings are erotic, but certainly not all of them.” This project is about body positivity and the human body. So many young people are afraid of wrinkles or a bit of a belly, but chasing beauty ideals isn’t realistic. That is what I hope to convey with Beings.
Boundaries can also exist between generations. In the wall hanging *We met online*, Dakota Magdalena Mokhammad pays tribute to her Afghan grandmother, whom she never met. She created the piece last summer at the TextielLab in Tilburg for Museum W. Through online archives, Afghan literature, and historical prints, Dakota pieced together a lost family history and discovered the richness of her Afghan roots. The title refers to this digital encounter, a way to connect with a history she did not experience firsthand. This quest aligns with Dakota’s previous work; she often weaves together themes such as identity, culture, and queerness in artworks made of textile and wood. Dakota Magdalena Mokhammad works in a multidisciplinary way with materials and themes

Will you step across the line? The exhibition’s layout also prompts you to reflect on boundaries. Kiki & Joost make the theme visible or palpable in every room through spatial interventions. Right from the first room, visitors encounter black lines. One cuts across the floor, posing the question: will you step over it? In another room, an installation of glass beads set in a misty, intimate atmosphere challenges your sense of personal space: do you let yourself be touched, or do you keep your distance? The placement of the artworks also plays with established expectations. Kiki & Joost aim to avoid making one work appear more important than another, inviting visitors to look at things differently. For instance, a work by Nan Goldin is not hung on the wall but positioned behind a partition. During Dutch Design Week, from Tuesday 17th October to Wednesday 25th October, 2026, Kiki & Joost will present the design for this exhibition. The scale model will be on display at their studio at Gabriël Metsulaan 1 in Eindhoven. At Museum W, the theme of boundaries is certainly not limited to art on the wall. As a visitor, you too are constantly exploring boundaries: where do you choose to stand, what do you let come close, and which line will you cross?

COLUMN LOUBNA
A Game of Tag? Lately, my head has been feeling a bit heavy. That’s hardly surprising, given the themes occupying my thoughts: poverty, inequality, the widening gap in the city. Urgent debates where the tone can quickly shift from shared responsibility to accusations and finger-pointing. Meanwhile, ordinary life goes on. Schedules fill up, deadlines loom, and groceries get more expensive. Recently, while out for a walk, I found myself smiling at one of my fondest memories in Eindhoven. Six years ago, I was cycling home from the city centre. On Boschdijk, near the UWV office, I overtook a man I didn’t know. A moment later, he overtook me. He looked at me. I don’t recall the exact look in his eyes, but I sensed an invitation in it. “Oh, so you want a race?” I called out. So, I overtook him again. For a few hundred meters, we kept passing each other, laughing, waving, sticking out our tongues like two kids who had chosen the same street as their playground. Until I had to take my turn-off. We thanked each other and waved as we cycled on. Our paths parted, literally. I don’t know his name, where he lives, or which party he votes for. I’ll probably never run into him again. Yet, he plays the lead role in one of my favourite memories. Two strangers who didn’t need to know each other to have fun together. Coexisting doesn’t get any simpler than that. There is a national “Outdoor Play Day.” For children. But why only for children? When did we stop playing? Perhaps we’re too concerned with what others think of us. Or maybe we have too much on our minds: a sick mother, unopened bills, the question of whether there’s enough money left for groceries. That is precisely why I sometimes long for something completely trivial. I hope that a spontaneous game of tag breaks out on the street someday. Someone just needs to dare to start, to forget their adulthood for a moment, smile, tag a stranger, and run off. You’re it! Will people be surprised or just hurry on by? Or will someone give chase? Will the student on their way to a lecture join in? Or the man in the suit who has a meeting in ten minutes? Perhaps, a little later, we’ll find ourselves out of breath on the street with strangers. We know nothing about each other, only that we just played together and now share a memory. That won’t solve poverty. A sick mother won’t get better, and the pile of bills won’t disappear. But perhaps we’ll be reminded of something we sometimes forget amidst all our serious conversations: that beneath all our differences, we are simply human beings capable of crossing paths. Without judgment, without debate, without needing to know who the other person is first. Even if only for a few minutes. Laughing, out of breath, fully in the moment. So, if someone suddenly taps you on the shoulder soon, don’t get angry. Run, because you’re it! LOUBNA BAKRA Social Architect Librarian Woensel-Zuid, Coalitie Kapitaalkracht

‘Every photo has its own story’ In early October, the time has come again: the World Press Photo Exhibition is arriving in Eindhoven. The award-winning press photos from the past year will be on display at TU/e. The images cover topics such as war, climate change, politics, protest, and daily life. Admission is free. BY DOGA KAMA IN COLLABORATION WITH WORLD PRESS PHOTO
World Press Photo was founded by Dutch photographers in 1955. It began as an international photo contest but has since grown into a global platform for photojournalism. Every year, thousands of photos are submitted by photographers from around the world. An international jury selects the images that ultimately become part of the exhibition. Every photo has its own story. To tell these stories, trained TU/e students provide guided tours of the exhibition. Visitors can join these tours for a small fee.
William Keo
One of these guides is Janna Bergmans (24), an Industrial Design student. Janna finds it special not only to lead visitors past the photos but also to immerse them in the stories and emotions behind the images. ‘We get to put the tours together ourselves, which makes every tour unique; you could even attend multiple tours.’ She consciously chooses photos that resonate with her personally. ‘I pick photos that move me both aesthetically and emotionally. During the tour, I tell the story behind five or six photos. The Photo of the Year is always one of them. There is also time for visitors to share their opinions along the way.’ Giving the tours supports perfectly Janna’s own passion for photography. ‘A news report can tell you what is happening, but a photograph can truly show what that means for the people experiencing it. It’s a way of suddenly bringing something very distant close to home.’
Roie Galitz
That is precisely where Janna sees the power of photojournalism. ‘When you open a newspaper, the first thing you see is the photo. You don’t need to know everything about a situation to be moved by a face, a posture, or a small detail.’

Aaron Favila
Organiser Liza Gloudemans from Studium Generale TU/e is enthusiastic about the students’ engagement. ‘It’s great for young people to see peers who are so enthusiastic about the exhibition. It always sparks a lot of conversation. There are often difficult or confronting stories included, but the organisers also ensure there are hopeful images on display showing, for instance, people picking up the pieces, moving on with their lives, or working towards a solution.’
Wedding in the Flood
One of those images is Liza’s personal favourite this year: Wedding in the Flood by Aaron Favila. The photo shows a bride standing in a flooded church. Her festive attire and smile stand in stark contrast to the water surrounding her. According to Liza, it is precisely that combination that makes the photo so special. ‘I hope visitors leave with that sense of interest, that they remember not just the images, but the stories behind them as well.’

A gesture to help someone keep moving forward A little something extra— “rainy-day treat”—can give someone just the boost they need.
In October, this concept takes on a very literal meaning in Eindhoven. Philips Fruittuin is making several hundred kilos of apples available to Eindhoven residents who could really use them.
Quiet Eindhoven and Kapitaalkracht/Pact Woensel Zuid are adding a little something extra to the mix. And ten Eindhoven residents who look out for others will receive a special Apple for the Thirst.
