The Art of Enjoying Life

A few weeks ago, I spoke to my grandpa after a funeral. Naturally, that was a difficult day, but at the end of the day, grandpa asked how things were going. “Not so good,” I said, of course, a day like that is always tough. Fortunately, grandpa always knows exactly what to say: “Is it going as well as it can go right now?” No matter how tough the day was, it still felt like it was. These few days were tough and the setback was significant, but the world went on, and that world is so beautiful too.

It can be painful for a moment, and perhaps you carry it with you for a while, but you also carry the positive moments with you, like a tailwind, which helps you get through difficult times even faster. As my favourite singer Spinvis once sang: “You are not the first, you won’t die from it, it doesn’t happen that fast.” A lyric I found so beautiful that I painted it and hung it above my bed. Yet, that is sometimes difficult to see; if you view everything as a big picture, you sometimes can’t see the forest for the trees. So, take a step back for a moment and take the time to see what is going well. You will see that it really isn’t the end of the world. When everything seems very big, I find it nice to make a note of what is going well, even if it is just something small: sitting nicely in the sun, eating a delicious meal, and discovering beautiful music.

Good things don’t come by themselves; they must be sought out. You cannot choose setbacks, they are going to come anyway, that will always be the case. It is up to you to create positive moments as well, but above all, it is up to you to learn to appreciate these moments. To realise that a setback is not the end of the world; life goes on... and you will have to do the same. Everything around you shapes you and shapes how you feel. Surround yourself with people who bring out your positivity, put on some cheerful music, and start singing and dancing. Watch that guilty-pleasure movie, have a nice drink in the sun, because only you can create your own pleasure.

I was startled.

Running to my bus, I looked back.

“LOVE YOUR OUTFIT!!!”, I heard three waving girls calling.

And my day was made a little right again.

WHAT MAKES YOU WHO YOU ARE?

Museum W, Weert, Saturday afternoon. In the bright reception area, a young man sits on a bench. On his nose are semi-transparent neon-yellow glasses with a print. It gives him a unique look: playful, sharp, a bit futuristic. He looks around attentively at the museum, at me, at what is happening. I ask him if he wants to participate in this column by Museum W. A short conversation about identity, based on five questions. He nods: “yes”. A moment later, we are sitting together on the bench in the hall. As visitors walk by, he tells the story he brought with him to Museum W.

ho are you?

I am Robin. I am adopted. When I was young, I often asked myself the question: who am I really? It did happen that I was seen as an Asian, while I just wanted to fit in. When I worked in a supermarket, I also received nasty comments from time to time. People would shout things like “shitty Chinese” or blame me for the Corona Virus.

Usually, I tried to ignore it. Getting angry takes a lot of energy and arguing takes even more.

What makes you who you are?

I believe identity has a lot to do with the need to belong somewhere. People are always looking for a group. And sometimes that happens by excluding others. I think there is often fear or insecurity behind that. If you understand that, you can also look at it a bit more gently.

Where do you belong?

That is a difficult question. I now work in the world of AI, full of types like managers, programmers, and sales tigers. I just rolled into it, without a degree. I think a lot about ethics and responsibility in technology, and I can get annoyed by how big tech companies handle data. As a former HKU student, I know what copyright means. Creativity and ownership ought to be protected. In the Netherlands, work is being done on AI models that are trained using legally obtained data. I think that is good.

Why is identity important to you?

Because it determines how you view the world and how you interact with others. Ultimately, humans are animals that have developed technology. But we also try to give meaning to what we experience.

Why do you come to Museum W?

Here I can look and reflect on what is beautiful and what is not, on what feels good or not. A museum provides space to pause and reflect on questions about identity and feeling. Perhaps it helps us to understand ourselves better, or to see where we belong. That is why I try to go to a museum every week.

Eindhoven Pride 2026 demonstrates how important connection and visibility are in a time when queer rights are under pressure worldwide. That is precisely why the third edition, with the theme United We Stand, is dedicated to being strong together: a community standing up for equality, freedom, and respect.

What once started with about 2,000 participants during the 2023 Pride Walk, has grown into a major event. Last year, Eindhoven Pride attracted no fewer than 18,000 visitors, and growth is expected again for 2026.

The parade on Saturday, 13th June promises to be bigger than ever, with more than 45 colourful participating groups filling the city with love and pride. After the parade, the party kicks off at Stadhuisplein during the free Pride Vibes Festival. Featuring performances by 2 Unlimited, Vanessa Van Cartier, Samantha Steenwijk, and Sharon Doorson, among others, in collaboration with local talent such as Daviet Kèta, Nova Forest, Belle Blaas, and Emily Salvia, a versatile programme emerges that reflects the diversity of the community.

New this year is the Pride Market. This brings together social (queer) organisations and creative entrepreneurs. Visitors can get acquainted with initiatives, engage in conversation with groups, and discover a colourful mix of information stands, art, fashion, and unique products. It forms an inspiring meeting place for connection and visibility.

UNITED WE STAND

A new podcast invites Eindhoven residents to open up.

‘In a city like Eindhoven, no one should feel alone,’ says Carine Visagie, producer and host of the new podcast series Between Strangers: Eindhoven. ‘There is so much energy here, and there are plenty of opportunities to meet each other. But real, deeper connection? That isn’t always a given.’ With her podcast, Carine wants to do something about that. Her goal is simple: to invite people to pause for a moment, listen, and truly hear what the other person is thinking and feeling.

In Between Strangers, people from Eindhoven engage in conversation about themes that resonate: belonging, loneliness, love, loss, and fear. People who might otherwise never meet sit together at the table here. This creates space for recognition, reflection, and understanding. The idea originated from Carine’s own story. In 2024, she moved with her husband from Cape Town to Eindhoven. Full of anticipation, but also with tension. ‘We arrived with only our suitcases and two cats. In the beginning, we were busy making a new home. That helped combat the loneliness.’ Then the sense of loss set in. ‘ The first winter was tough. I missed everything familiar, even the sounds of home. It felt especially lonely around the holidays.’

Thanks to colleagues and contacts, Carine found her place relatively quickly, but she also noticed something else. ‘In conversations with friends, colleagues, and strangers, I kept hearing the same thing: many people are lonely.’

A PLACE FOR MEETING

With Between Strangers, Carine creates a place where people can truly meet each other. Open, honest, and without judgment. ‘We pair two different Eindhoven residents together each time. The idea is to break down barriers.’ According to her, Eindhoven is perfect for this. ‘The city attracts people from all over the world, partly due to companies like ASML. It is lively and diverse, but precisely because people come and go, loneliness lurks.’

FROM PERSONAL TO SHARED

The conversations are intimate. That is why Carine works with preliminary conversations and recordings in the podcast studio at Strijp-S. ‘Guests need to feel safe. They can remain anonymous and listen to the recording beforehand.’ Her wish? ‘That people feel seen and heard and perhaps start a conversation just a little more easily with someone they don’t yet know.’

What makes this series special is that personal stories are shared. That random thoughts lead to something that connects us. Between Strangers: Eindhoven will be available to listen to from the end of September via Spotify, Apple, and Audible.

Eindless is a publication of the Uit in Eindhoven foundation. Together, we will make you look at the city and its inhabitants differently, and we invite you to join in.

An afternoon at the Police Court, cases in and around Eindhoven. Most people will never have to deal with it and know the judicial system mainly from TV or movies. Police Court sessions involve minor cases that are handled from start to finish within half an hour. The verdict is delivered immediately on the spot.

During one such afternoon, I listened in from the public gallery to all the cases that were discussed.

Five suspects come and go.

One vehemently denies everything, the other lays it all on the table. A selection of what passes by during such an afternoon: assault, insulting a public official in the performance of their duties, public drunkenness, threats, noise nuisance. And even within that, there is a great deal of variation; one suspect had called a police officer a ‘frikandel’ (a type of sausage), while another had fought back tooth and nail during an arrest.

I won’t repeat the exact words he directed at the station staff here.

Thijs & Marije

Thijs and Marije are on their way to Portugal. They are going there to visit Marije’s sister for two weeks. ‘My sister moved to Portugal with her partner a while ago,’Marije explains. ‘They now live together on a large estate with animals.’ Living abroad isn’t entirely new for her sister; she previously lived in Aruba.

During their stay, Thijs and Marije want not only to relax but also help on her sister’s land. They look forward to getting away from home for a while, unwinding, and being able to do something practical on the estate at the same time. Thijs and Marije themselves sometimes think about living abroad for a while later. However, Portugal would probably not be their first choice. ‘We think it would be nice to live somewhere else, but Portugal isn’t exactly our dream destination,’ says Marije. For Thijs, this trip is extra special. It is, after all, the first time he is flying from Eindhoven Airport. ‘It feels small here, but manageable,’ says Thijs. ‘You quickly know where you need to be, and that makes travelling a lot more relaxed.’ So, for the two, the holiday starts off relaxed even before they get on the plane.

Behind every flight is a story. From spontaneous city trips to emotional reunions and new beginnings at the airport. Every day, thousands of personal moments criss-cross. In these interviews, we speak to travellers about where they are going, why they are leaving, and what travel means to them. Will you join us?

Direct connections, close to home

Eindhoven Airport has 7 million passengers per year, which is an average of more than 18,000 arriving and departing people every day. 53% of them travel on a holiday or a city trip, 33% visit family and/or friends and 14% make a business trip. However short their visit may be the airport strengthens the growth of the region for settling, for living and working, and in economic terms.

How does such a process proceed? The Public Prosecutor gives a summary of the facts, thereby opening the case. Next, the Police Judge questions the accused; what exactly happened, and what does the suspect have to say about it? Their personal circumstances are also considered in determining the type of sentence. For instance, someone with significant debt is more likely to receive community service, while someone who works a lot is more likely to receive a fine. The Public Prosecutor will then request the sentence based on the proven criminal offences. The lawyer is then allowed to respond to this and defend the accused against the allegations. Finally, the Police Judge delivers the verdict, and the case is closed.

For me, the human side of the cases is what stayed with me the most. Behind every case is a person, with their own unique circumstances. Sometimes it involves an escalation stemming from a small moment; another has been on probation for a longer period.

I was also impressed by the lawyer who managed to get her client completely acquitted. How different one case can seem. It depends so strongly on whose perspective you view it. One thing I have learned, I will never call a police officer a ‘frikandel’!

Kraftwerk: Revolutionary pioneers closely linked to Eindhoven

Kraftwerk’s influence on modern music is so great that we hardly notice it anymore. Yet, chances are high that a large portion of the music you hear on the radio today, whether it’s a dance track, pop, or hip-hop, contains a little bit of the musical DNA of these four gentlemen from Düsseldorf. At the Muziekgebouw Eindhoven, we love pioneers, and there are few acts that have taken the concept of ‘pioneer’ so literally as founders Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider. You could say: Kraftwerk are the Beatles of electronic music.

What makes Kraftwerk so special is that they saw beauty in everyday, modern things. Where other bands sang about love or distant travels, Kraftwerk sang about the down-to-earth reality of post-war Europe: driving on the Autobahn, travelling on the Trans-Europe Express, or the simple pleasure of a pocket calculator. They embraced technology at a time when many people still found it frightening or cold. Through that focus on technology, forty years ago, they predicted what our current world would look like. Their 1981 album Computer World dealt with data duplication, government computers, and digital communication, long before we all had a smartphone in our pocket.

SOURCE OF INSPIRATION

Musically, their approach was revolutionary due to its simplicity. No unnecessary frills, but tight, hypnotic rhythms and crystal-clear melodies. This ‘robot pop’ proved to be a huge source of inspiration for completely different genres. In the slums of New York, the first hip-hoppers used their beats as the basis for a new music culture, while in Detroit, the founders of techno became fascinated by the mechanical precision from Germany. Even major pop stars like David Bowie and Coldplay were happy to draw inspiration from Kraftwerk.

Today, their performances have evolved into a unique visual experience. Anyone attending a Kraftwerk show sees not a traditional rock band, but four stately figures behind illuminated consoles, surrounded by advanced projections. It is a total work of art that fits perfectly with a city like Eindhoven, where we are accustomed to the combination of design, technology, and creativity.

PHILIPS

Kraftwerk and Eindhoven therefore go way back. If you look at the history of the city and the band, you see several points of contact. While Eindhoven is the city of Philips and technological innovation, Kraftwerk is the band that

translated that same innovation into music. They did not concern themselves with standard rock and roll clichés, but became fascinated by the world of machines, computers, and electronics. That fascination had a direct, tangible link to Eindhoven. In their early years, Kraftwerk released their first three albums under the world-famous Philips label. The iconic record covers from that era bear the company logo that made Eindhoven great.

Philips equipment, developments at the NatLab, and the early experiments with electronic music in the city formed a huge source of inspiration for the band. Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider, the founders of Kraftwerk, were not the types who wanted to rebel against the established order. They were more like musical engineers; they used the technology being developed in factories and laboratories to create a whole new kind of pop music.

EVOLUON

The highlight of this special bond between the city and the group was the concerts at the Evoluon in 2013. This building is, of course, the ultimate symbol of progress in Eindhoven. That Kraftwerk performed there was no coincidence. The Evoluon ‘UFO’ already looked like the future in the sixties, and Kraftwerk’s music did the same. During those shows, everything came together: the Philips’ label history, the futuristic architecture, and the band’s electronic beats. Those who were there often describe it as a moment when the character of the city and the music matched perfectly. That is why a visit by Kraftwerk to Eindhoven still feels like a kind of homecoming.

On Thursday, 11th June, Kraftwerk return to Eindhoven with an exclusive concert. The Klokgebouw at Strijp-S provides the industrial backdrop for this concert, a special location for the band returning to their earliest roots. The first albums were released on the Philips label, and at the time, the Klokgebouw was part of the Eindhoven electronics company’s industrial complex.

This is the place to be on the first Friday night of the month!

Not in the mood for a standard Friday night, but do feel like being surrounded by people? Every first Friday of the month, the library in the Witte Dame is the place to be! From 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM, there are various activities at the Eindhoven Library. The atmosphere is relaxed, and there is always something you can join in on. Whether you come for the social aspect or to completely immerse yourself in your own bubble: the library is there for you.

For instance, you can join the games night or participate in a ‘One Shot’ role-play. For those who enjoy reading and conversation, there are various clubs such as the Silent

Book Club, the YA Book Club, and the classics club Dead Writers.

The Women’s Café is also a regular feature of the evening. In addition to these regular groups, there are changing activities every month that give the evening a different twist each time. That is why they have a youth panel that actively contributes ideas regarding our activities, the layout of the library, and new projects. PENNINGS FOUNDATION

As part of Pride Week in Eindhoven, Pennings presents two projects on gender. With ‘Queer transformation through time’, the collective Celestial Bodies, consisting of four drag artists, focuses attention on the history and perception of queer throughout the ages. Additionally, Prins de Vos draws attention to the often long waiting times for an initial intake at a gender clinic with On Hold. through June 20

This is followed by the annual Final Exhibition Photography of SintLucas: June 25 through July 18.

And during the summer holidays, something completely different is being shown. With Three of a kind, the work of three generations of the Eindhoven artist family Van Iersel – Gerard, Rik, and Joshua – is brought together. The exhibition is curated by Rob Schoonen.

July 25 to August 30 Pennings Foundation is a platform for photography, located at Geldropseweg 63 in Eindhoven. In addition to exhibitions, activities and workshops are organized. Photobooks and products by local makers are offered in the shop.

vrijZicht III

vrijZicht III is the presentation of the results following a series of pop-up artist-in-residencies at De Stuurhut in Vlissingen in the Summer of 2025. Eight totally different artists, but all with the same ‘drive’ to make use of this opportunity for 2 weeks to develop ideas further and get to work on projects in complete freedom.

De Stuurhut is a space available for residents of Vlissingen to come together, but also serves as a location for meetings, as a craft space, or for children’s parties.

The small building is situated in a unique location, at the separation of water and land, where the ferry arrives, the train departs, the harbor shrinks, and the city begins. The exhibition features work by: Mick Jansen, Jorieke Rottier, Toos Nijssen, Andre Smits, Magdeleen van Eersel, Nanda Raemanski, and Stef Fridael.

At the Van Gogh Village Museum, you will discover his story and sources of inspiration. Afterwards, it is time to head outside and literally follow in Van Gogh’s footsteps.

Or winner Da Trash Club, who, with humorous performances and well-designed costumes, unmask the fact that something you throw away isn’t really gone. Danielle Lemaire will lead a special guided tour of the exhibition. During this tour, she will take you on her artistic journey of discovery into former life in the Dutch East Indies. Her family history takes center stage in this. She draws inspiration from historical archival material from the colonial period, as well as personal memories & diary fragments from her ancestors. In her work, she combines themes such as religion, spirituality, colonialism, and melancholy into a single layered and poetic image.

Expo Chris Rijksmuseum

The permanent collection presentation of Museum W has been supplemented with ceramic objects by visual artist Chris Rijk. Rijk combines the tradition of Delft Blue pottery with a contemporary and often provocative visual language. His oeuvre consists of vases, plates, dishes, and other ceramic utility objects. In these artworks, Rijk incorporates themes that are intertwined with queer identity, popular culture, power relations, and eroticism.

‘I love that we can also offer the newest, trendiest books for young people. From cowboy romance to dark romance, from BookTok hypes to young adult thrillers, and from easy-read books to manga: we always keep our collection up to date.’ Collector Iris Windmeijer van Zelst of the Eindhoven Region Library is responsible for the collection: ‘Thanks to our special purchasing method, we are super-fast and can respond to the latest hypes and trends.’ She emphasises the cool collection, specifically for young people. ‘In the Yellow World, you will find the newest BookTok books in Dutch and English, ranging from new adult and fun novels to manga and dystopian thrillers. Here you will also find the ‘read for the list’ books and did you know that as a library member you can also read free English ebooks and audiobooks via the Borrowbox app?’

To find out which books young people want to read, she also keeps an eye on BookTok herself. Iris: ‘Current availability is one of the key strengths of our collection. The newest books are in the library within two weeks. Are you still missing a book? Then you can also request books via our website.’

Good to know: Iris is a real bookfluencer herself! You can follow her on her account @readalicious for your daily dose of reading inspiration.

PROGRAMME FOR AND BY YOUNG PEOPLE

To organise activities within the Eindhoven Region Library, collaboration with young people is increasingly sought out. A large part of the programming and activities for the community is in the hands of programme maker Carol Pijnacker: ‘We prefer to create a cool selection together with young people based on what they are up to and what interests them. For example, we have established a youth panel with whom we can occasionally brainstorm, and we try to step outside our bubble by collaborating with organisations that resonate with young adults.’ Carol emphasizes that these collaborations are still in their infancy: ‘We are open to all cool ideas and initiatives circulating among young adults. Do you have any ideas? Let us know!

COMMUNITY FRIENDS

Marketing and communications advisor Sarah Welten is also involved daily in promoting the many activities in the library. Although she works on many different projects, she prefers to focus on promotions centered on young people: ‘My goal is to show young people that the library is a place for them, and it is best when that connection arises organically.’ A good example is the Young Adult Book Club. Sarah: ‘I put it on the website and social media, and now, an enthusiastic group of young people gets together every first Friday evening of the month. We chat about books, but it has just become a big group of friends. That is exactly what we want: to provide the facilities so that young people can form their own community.’

Jesus clings to his cross. He seems at peace with the fact that it won’t be long now. As I watch him from the crowd, I wonder why we released Barabbas. I often saw him looking at women’s thighs while praying. He also stole from people who were not exactly living in abundance, and I know that he committed murder. Oh wait! They are dragging Jesus down from the cross now. I can’t quite see it through the mass anymore, so I try to worm my way a bit further forward.

When this dawned on me, I fell silent inside. The crowd becomes more agitated the closer I get to Jesus. People move in unpredictable directions. Looks of passion and emptiness. A heavily sweating man slams into me without realising it. I fall with a hard thud onto the rocky ground. As I feel the blood seeping from my ear, I turn my head with all my might toward the cross. He is hanging. I see it in brief flashes, through the tense calves of the crowd. I am free.

‘They sometimes call it a programme for people who don’t know what they want to do,’ says Adam. ‘A bit soft.’ The others immediately respond: ‘But that is not true at all.’ Sitting in front of me are Hasan (20), Doris (18), Lotte (21), and Adam (18), Social Work students at SUMMA, together with their teacher Roy de Vries. They explain how they learn to work in practice: sometimes light-hearted, sometimes serious, focused on both the individual and society. Art and culture play an important role in this.

‘Our programme is often underestimated,’ says Hasan.

‘You have to be good with language,’ adds Lotte.

‘And empathetic.’

‘Giving people real attention,’ says Doris. ‘Following and demonstrating their development.’

Adam is silent for a moment. ‘Social work,’ he says, ‘is just serious work.’

The class visits cultural venues, attends workshops, and works on projects in neighbourhoods. So they are often out and about. Doris laughs: ‘Sometimes we just get a text: come here.’ One thing is clear: you don’t learn social work just in a classroom.

‘You learn how to use art and culture as a tool,’ says Lotte.

‘To make contact,’ says Adam.

‘Or to get people moving,’ says Hasan.

Roy explains: ‘They are ways to get inside people, especially when talking alone isn’t enough.’

‘But it also provides inspiration,’ says Hasan.

‘In Helmond, we are going to work with young people on a healthy lifestyle,’ says Adam. ‘With kickboxing and games.’

‘Yes, sports have that function too,’ says Lotte. ‘It’s about using something practical to make a connection.’

‘There is always a common ground somewhere.’

They gain work experience in various practical projects.

Adam explains: ‘I worked with someone who wanted to live a healthier life. He wanted to lose weight, but the real story was that he had lost his father. Then there is more behind something small or simple. Behaviour comes from somewhere.’

There is always something that connects people.’

‘That’s right,’says Doris. ‘You always find a common ground somewhere.’

But the work is not just pleasing. ‘People come with intense stories,’ says Adam. ‘Violence, loss.’ There is a moment of silence. ‘You have to be able to handle that,’ says Lotte.

Hasan: ‘I spoke to someone with dementia. Without family, he was truly all alone, that hit home.’

Lotte also thinks back to a moment that made an impact. ‘I was working with someone my own age,’ she says. ‘Difficult home situation, financial problems. We clicked and built a bond of trust. And that was exactly what I found difficult.’ ‘Then it hits close to home,’ says Hasan. Lotte nods. ‘Yes. But you also must remain professional.’

At such a moment, it is important that you know the difference between empathy and compassion, Roy explains. ‘Empathy is putting yourself in someone’s shoes,’ says Doris. ‘But compassion is not losing yourself,’ Lotte adds. ‘You have to protect yourself.’ Otherwise, you won’t be able to keep doing this work.’

Roy sums it up: ‘Empathy indeed involves putting yourself in someone’s shoes, or feeling their way in, and compassion is more about sympathizing or feeling along.’ After a short silence: ‘Sometimes listening is enough.’

‘If someone feels heard,’ says Doris, ‘that is already a great deal.’

Learning in practice at SUMMA Social Work

Working in a complex world

When asked how they envision their future profession, Doris takes the floor.

The others recognize this insight. For Doris, the power of the profession lies in making contact. ‘I had a conversation with a 95-year-old man,’ she says. ‘About music. I am 18 myself, but we clicked immediately. He talked about his favourite piece, classical, and said: just sit down and listen. That is healing. Wise words, because I couldn’t imagine that at first.’ Lotte nods: ‘That is beautiful.

‘The world isn’t necessarily getting better,’ she says. ‘There are problems that run deep, traumas in families, in systems. But you can really make a difference.’

‘We can make that difference,’ says Adam. He already knows where he wants to go:

‘I would like to work in an asylum seekers’ centre. Mental support is desperately needed there.’

‘With young people who end up in crime, it has often been a factor for generations,’ says Hasan. ‘My goal is to help people become self-reliant.’

What Adam, Doris, Hasan, and Lotte have in common is not only what they learn, but also how they look at things. At people. At stories. At possibilities.

Perhaps that is where the core lies. In a region that is raw and progressive, where differences can be great and stories can run deep, a generation is rising here that does not look away. That stays. That listens. And that shows, step by step, that attention and connection are not soft values, but precisely what keeps a society running.

It’s almost here, summer is coming! The time when the sun shines late and we get closer to the holidays. Now is the perfect way to prepare yourself for those beautiful summer evenings; a good drink. You only need a little and it’s ready in just a few minutes. Mega refreshing for the warm days, but most importantly, suuuper tasty!

Ingrediënten voor 1 drankje:

Ingredients for 1 drink:

-100g bevroren fruit naar keuze -een limoen -6 ijsklontjes

-100g frozen fruit of your choice -a lime -6 ice cubes

-100ml Sprite (zero)

Optioneel: een muntblaadje

-100ml Sprite (zero)

Optional: a mint leaf

Dit recept is aan te passen naar wens, kies eventueel een andere frisdrank naar keuze.

Stap

Put your frozen fruit and ice cubes in the blender and blend until there are no more chunks.

Stop je bevroren fruit en ijsklontjes in de blender en blend dit fijn tot er geen stukjes meer in zitten.

Snijd je limoen doormidden en pers het sap in je glas. Hierna giet je het mengsel uit de blender erbij.

Cut your lime in half and squeeze the juice into your glass. Then pour the mixture from the blender into it.

Vul je glas verder aan met de Sprite. Snijd een plakje van je l en plaats die op de rand van het glas. Om het helemaal af te ma ganeer je het glas met een muntblaadje.

Fill your glass further with Sprite. Cut a slice of your lime and place it on the rim of the glass. To finish it off, garnish the glass with a mint leaf.

Are you a young creator in Eindhoven with an imaginative idea, but not yet sure how to realise it? Then DEMO is here for you! Zoë Grijn noticed that there wasn’t enough space in Eindhoven for creators to develop their inspired ideas. She found a group of like-minded people, and DEMO was born from that connection. A little gift!

It is not easy to summarize everything Zoë does. ‘I come up with creative concepts in the broadest sense of the word,’ she says. She organises exhibitions and events, but also writes films. ‘I actually do a lot of different things, but for DEMO I mainly focus on exhibition concepts, curation, and mentoring talented creators and thinkers.’

DEMO originated two years ago from a sense of void. Zoë and several other creators mainly missed space for all those wonderful ideas in Eindhoven that just wouldn’t get off the ground due to a lack of money, time, or space, or out of fear that their work wasn’t perfect enough yet. ‘Eindhoven is full of smart people and rich ideas. So much beauty can emerge if you give them the space.’

Zoë considers connection very important, which is why DEMO is an accessible place. ‘Everyone is welcome to send an email with an idea, respond to our open calls, or drop by one of our events.’

There are several exciting things planned at DEMO in the near future. This summer there is an artist in residency, and in the autumn, DEMO is collaborating with Dutch Design Week and there are two more exhibitions scheduled at NulZes.

COLUMN SENA & JOANA

My name is Sena. In my circle, I am known as a feminist. To some people, that immediately sounds like I am saying something radical. As if feminism means that women are better than men. But that is exactly the misunderstanding.

I was born on 8th March, International Women’s Day. Perhaps it is a coincidence, but to me, it feels almost symbolic. For years, I have been passionate about women’s rights and empowerment. Not because women should be superior to men, but because women deserve the same freedom. Feminism does not tell women how to live their lives. It does the exact opposite: it gives women the space to choose for themselves. Whether that is building a career, becoming a mother, studying, starting a business, or something completely different. The core of feminism is freedom of choice. Because if a woman only exhibits ‘good’ behaviour because she has no other option, that is not strength. That is survival.

A major inspiration to me is the YouTuber TheWizardLiz. She often speaks about self-worth, setting boundaries, and knowing what you deserve. Those kinds of voices are important because they remind women that they are allowed to take their place.

But empowerment doesn’t stop with yourself. It also starts with how women treat one another. Too often, women are pitted against one another, whereas we need each other. Because let’s be honest if women don’t support each other, who will? To me, feminism is not a battle against men. It is a movement for freedom, respect, and equal opportunities. Ultimately, it is about something very simple: that every woman has the space to be fully herself, without excuses.

World Women & Brainport

You create something for others where they want to live for

a long time and which we can be proud of

A radio report about the Mien Ruys Garden inspired Mariëlle Kok (60) at the age of fifteen to focus on nature and creating landscapes. Since 2013, she has run the KruitKok agency together with Esther Kruit, where they work on sustainable projects. Through parks, landscapes, and nature-inclusive living environments, she makes the city a little greener.

Mariëlle herself enjoys living in the city, where she watched her children grow up. ‘Eindhoven offered them a very nice place to play outside.’ This choice aligns closely with her work as a landscape architect, in which she focuses on creating sustainable and liveable environments. ‘It is important to create a balanced area that fits well with the rest of the surroundings.’

SUSTAINABLE PROJECTS

She translates this vision into projects in and around Eindhoven, such as the Brainport Industries Campus (BIC), where she designed the outdoor space from 2016 to 2020. ‘We chose to primarily re-use landscape structures and only grow perennials and grasses that are in keeping with the region.’ For instance, there are drought-resistant trees that can withstand changing climate conditions well. ‘Trees like acacias and lindens have a long lifespan and improve biodiversity.’

Because trees could not be planted everywhere due to cables and pipes, a ‘Kempen’ landscape was created. According to Mariëlle, a biodiverse area around the campus is very important. ‘There is something to see and experience at any moment. That is wonderful when you are having lunch outside, and it offers birds, insects, and plant species a place to survive.’

In an integrated team, Mariëlle is also working on Salix, a nature-inclusive residential tower in the city. ‘Here, we are creating a roof garden on top of a parking garage. It is important that the garage disappears completely from view and becomes part of the landscape.’ To achieve this, a roof garden with varying levels is being designed, featuring a smart system to collect and distribute water. ‘Soon, you won’t have the impression that you are walking over a garage.’

GREEN SOURCE OF INSPIRATION

Mariëlle enjoys walking through the green areas in and around Eindhoven. One of her favourite spots, which she has come to know through her work, is Gijzenrooi. She previously created a master plan area vision for this area. ‘It is a fantastic part of Eindhoven that isn’t very well known: an old landscape where you can take beautiful walks past old trees,

meadows, and fields.’ These places form an important source of inspiration in her work. ‘As early as the Middle Ages, farmers in Gijzenrooi developed a sustainable water system to retain water and direct it to places where it was needed.’ At KruitKok, she applies this sustainable method of storing and distributing water to all outdoor space projects. This ensures that water remains available for the vegetation and that the plants can better withstand drought and heat.

THE IMPORTANCE OF GREEN SPACE

According to Mariëlle, it is very important to integrate more nature. ‘Often, when people buy a house, they remove the plants from the garden and replace them with paving. If you leave those plants in place, you ensure more biodiversity.’ Urban areas are becoming increasingly warmer. ‘Heat cannot dissipate as well in cities due to paving. As a result, people sleep worse, and health problems can arise in the long term. That is not very pleasant for a society.’ More green spaces can certainly offer a solution. ‘When you stand under a tree, it is always cooler than when you stand in full sun and you always must ensure that you are in such a city. With its hot summers, such a city therefore needs to have many cool spots.’

The landscape architect emphasises that making the city greener together can also bring people closer together. ‘It has been proven to be good for your health. By working together in nature, you also build a bond and combat loneliness.’

When she looks back on her projects, Mariëlle sees that people enjoy living and living together there. ‘That is something very special. You create something for others where they want to live for a long time, and we can be proud
