Just before we launched Endless magazine a year ago, we knew that this would be with a cover of the travelling theater festival: the Parade in Eindhoven. A beautiful hand-drawn illustration that would surely draw attention to our new issue. The decision was therefore quickly made that we could have a small party on the festival grounds with its small tents and caravans. This year we will definitely do that again. For the Parade we have a fondness and as editors we are once again ready for the exciting productions, again with FRINO and for the first time with our own tent for Theo Maassen.

With Eindless, we are rolling into our second year, and we find that we are getting closer to the core of the magazine we want to publish: with a heart for art, culture & design, and a soft-journalistic shell for the people in this little piece of the Netherlands. Especially with a new government that is

proposing a VAT rise from 9 to 21% making visiting cultural events and venues unaffordable for many ordinary people. We will continue to use our media to focus on “what’s going on & where to go out”. We saw Piet Hein Eek’s letter about the retention of the Design Academy and support the campaign with our heart and soul. It’s about the same sense of DNA that link Eindhoven’s finest trio Lirical, Miggs de Bruijn and Sandersville and PSV Commercial Director, Frans Janssen. The same passion that Miriam Frosi and Elena Digitolamo as custodians of their Italian roots, influence their life here. All in all, we are Eindhoveners, Brainporters from the heart. And we have only one choice, as Eek puts it: “join in the compelling positivity, participate and solve”.

STEP IN THE ARENA • GRAFFITI FESTIVAL

“We used to be the Pinkpop of graffiti festivals, always looking for new, striking talents worldwide”. Over the past fifteen years, curator Dave van den Berg has brought the top of the graffiti scene to the iconic Berenkuil in Eindhoven and made Step into the Arena a household name and a permanent fixture in the international graffiti and street art world. “In addition to the festival in de kuil, our team has also organised many beautiful fringe events in the city and thus made Eindhoven a lot more colourful.”

The end of an era

Despite the success, Step in the Arena Festival stops now. After fifteen years, the festival ends after the weekend of 15th-16th June.

“With, sometimes, as many as 120 artists participating in the festival, we can no longer sustain this. The new policy of Culture Eindhoven, which emphasizes fair practice, means that all participating artists must be paid,” explains van den Berg. “We could simplify it, but we don’t want to do that to the festival. This year we have more registrations than ever, people come from all over the world to show their work in the Berenkuil.”

For those who want to say goodbye, the ‘Step in the Arena, 15 years of paint!’ exhibition opens on 15th June 15 at 9.00pm at Kelderman and Van Noort. This can be visited until 7th July and offers a look back at the rich history of the festival.

As for the future, van den Berg is not sitting still. Dave plans to focus entirely on his own art.

“The most important thing is that I do more graffiti and make street art. My own visual language, postmodern graffiti, but also works on paper and cloth.” Soon Dave will even have an exhibition in London, together with the artist ANTIGOON.

AMONG CULTURES: ITALY

Elena Digirolamo & Mirjam Frosi

I have been part of the Italian community of Eindhoven for years. We are used to migrating and are capable of adapting to any place. Here, in particular, I found a lot of affection and interest in our culture, and many Dutch people amazed me with their desire to speak to me in Italian, often very well. Various voluntary institutions help Italians to integrate into the city and study the language for the new generations, such as the Fantaitaliando association, which arranges readings for kids at the Veldhoven library. The Made in Italy association organizes aperitifs, book rentals, and thematic evenings to integrate both communities. So, let’s delve deeper into the topic by talking to two Italian women who are well integrated into our city’s social and cultural fabric.

TEXT: AILÉN GAMBERONI

PHOTO: ELENA DIGIROLAMO: FERO STUDIO

Miriam Frosi has lived in Eindhoven for over 24 years and passionately works for the city and its citizens. She is proud to be the first Italian woman elected as a counselor in the Netherlands; this is her second term. She works to improve connections and integration in our multicultural city, which boasts 165 nationalities. Furthermore, her focus areas include education, sports, economics, and the labor market.

I hear more and more people speaking in my language when I walk down the street: how many Italians can you estimate live between Eindhoven and Brainport?

Miriam Frosi: “Eindhoven and her demography changed a lot. When I first moved here, you could only hear Dutch people talking on the streets, and occasionally Turkish in my area (Tongelre). Nowadays, you hear alle the languages. The Italian community has grown significantly, ranking 7th. This ranks the most prominent Indian community, comprising 2.7% of the population. Then, the Turkish, Polish, Chinese, Spanish, and  Italian. There are approximately 2000 Italians living in the city. The reasons Italians move to this region can vary, but many seek better job opportunities. We reside in the Brainport area, where intelligent minds from all over the world come to work in technology and the numerous startup companies throughout the region. We are proud to claim that we have the most innovative square meter in the world. The ecosystem is functioning, creating added value and welfare for everybody.”

‘This is where the most innovative square metres in the world is!’

However, does everyone find a better quality of life and job?

“For many Italians with a master’s degree, this is the case. However, for others, it might be different. Unfortunately, in my research a couple of years ago, I discovered that some of the workforce (4.800 in Brabant) is victims of labor exploitation. Most of them are from Eastern Europe. They are “locked” by criminal interim work agencies. There are also reputable agencies, but these villains provide permits to work, a BSN number, accommodation, and even transportation to the workplace. However, with all these facilities, the employees depend entirely on the agency. If you are no longer needed, you are left without a home, job, or income overnight. This is a dire situation, and we want to address it. The homeless population is increasing in our city because of this.  That’s why there is a helpdesk to report these exploitation cases and obtain more information, the Migranten INFOPOINT.”

In your opinion, does the Italian community help each other?

“Seeing many socially active Italians assisting newcomers in navigating this new environment is heartening. We have cultural organizations,

6
‘Especially for Dante I make a lot of contacts with people who are passionate are passionate about my culture’

When we talk about cultural organisations, we can only ask for the opinion of Elena Digirolamo. She is the beating heart of various Italian events and enriching associations

WhatsApp groups to assist with questions and social media groups. It’s gratifying to help others. I organized Connecting Cultures to network with new people and create a better, more social city.”

Speaking of cultural organizations, we can only ask for the opinion of Elena Digirolamo, the beating heart of various events and enriching associations.

Tell us about your work for the Libera Mente Foundation and the Dante Eindhoven language school. Elena Digirolamo: “I am passionate about connecting people and want to create a piece of Italy in Eindhoven, where I live. For this reason, I founded the Stichting Libera Mente to offer cultural events in Italian. As a side effect, we have also created a place to meet and develop a sense of community. I am personally involved in recruiting most of the speakers. This function suits me since I have many connections and can reach out to potential speakers. I started collaborating with Stichting Dante Alighieri Eindhoven only a few years ago. I am responsible for organizing the courses. The activity for the school enriches what I was already doing for Libera Mente and vice versa. The activities are similar, and they strengthen each other. I establish many connections with people passionate about my culture, particularly for Dante.”

Several language schools and private tutors teach the Italian language in Eindhoven and Brabant. Why?

“I have seen a lot of requests to learn the Italian language in Eindhoven. There are several reasons for this: Italy is a country that is loved for holidays, and the students would like to be able to speak the language during their holidays.  The Dutch are also passionate about Italian history, art, and opera, so they have extra motivation to learn the language. There is also a group planning to move to Italy after retirement or who have Italian-speaking families and would like to know the language to communicate with them.”

Are Italians here integrated well?

“Italians generally incorporate well into the land they move to, and in the past twenty years, I have yet to see a specific need to create close communities. On the other hand, I have made a couple of communities specifically to support and help each other.  These communities are not the only social point of contact for Italians; they are just an addition to all their personal lives. I see different sorts of Italians with a different level of integration. Some have learned Dutch and are fully integrated, while others speak only English and live more in an international bubble. This is true for many migrants, I suppose.”n

Frans Janssen has been extremely successful as PSV Commercial Director. Before that he was FC Eindhoven Chairman. At the end of 2017, he moved to the Eredivisie club. Prior to that, the native of Waarlre, was CEO of the vehicle leasing company, Athlon. In that capacity, he built a significant business network in Southeast Brabant.

PSV is familiar with the fact that the Brainport Eindhoven Metropolitan Region has not been a traditional main sponsor. Not one company, but a regional collective that united under a shared denominator, in which the ideas of the Founding Father, Philips, live on.

We know from research that Brainport brand awareness in the Netherlands has grown to more than 80%, similar to the best-known A-brands. That is incredibly positive and, in part, thanks to its prominent place on our players’ shirts. It ties in with the committed role that PSV plays in the region. Brand awareness is not the only thing which has taken off since then. Our region is flourishing and growing faster than the rest of The Netherlands. It has shifted political focus to the south and that has paid off. Brainport is now reaping the benefits of a vibrant business

community and an influx of people from all corners of the world and PSV has contributed to its profile. PSV is also making progress on the playing field. Being in the Eredivisie we are untouchable, competitive in Europe and have competed with the best. The Philips Stadium sells out fast. Our home is now too small for the family we have become. The idea of necessary expansion is alive and well among supporters, but will that hold true if the results are disappointing?

PSV commissioned a study by research agency Hypercube into, amongst other things, sporting ambitions and the stadium. The conclusion: PSV’s ambitions are realistic; the Philips Stadium is ideally located and there is continued demand for an extra 10,000 seats. A wonderful conclusion that is partly due to regional growth and the increase in potential spectator demand. If, or when, the

Philips Stadium reaches capacity the question remains. Architects are currently considering the architectural aspects and associated costs. In the meantime, we are also in discussion with the Municipality so that everything fits in with the area’s development. If that happens, I’m sure this will give Eindhoven even more visibility.

PSV is literally and figuratively in the middle of our region. If the region grows, PSV grows with it.

In addition to the affiliated associations, Björn van der Doelen, a Dutch singer-songwriter, actor, and radio presenter, will also join the celebration.

The Music of Gary Lucas & Jeff Buckley

When two giants collaborate, they can elevate each other to great heights. That’s precisely what happened when Gary Lucas and Jeff Buckley found each other. One conjured atmospheric, elusive guitar lines from his fingertips. The other possessed a celestial voice with an impossible range. Together, they created pure magic with Grace. This album is now thirty years old. To commemorate that memorable moment, guitarist Gary Lucas will perform a special show during a Heroes Night at the BRIDGE Guitar Festival, in collaboration with Co de Kloet

Mark Lettieri & Metropole Orkest

Mark Lettieri is one of the grooviest, funkiest, most adventurous, and simultaneously ear-pleasing guitarists of the moment. Besides being a solid force in the electrifying jazz fusion band Snarky Puppy, you also know him from The Fearless Flyers, with Cory Wong and Joe Dart of Vulfpeck. His music sounds like putting Zapp & Roger, George Clinton, Eddie Van Halen, and a baritone guitar in one room. For BRIDGE Guitar Festival, he comes to Muziekgebouw Eindhoven with the enchanting Metropole Orkest.

For the first time, the city of Eindhoven welcomes Pride, a celebration of love, acceptance, and equality. Therefore, Pride Week will take place from June 8 to June 16, with the theme ‘Light Up Your Pride’.

The Pride festivities kick off on June 8 with the very first Eindhoven Pride Parade. Put on your most colorful outfit and come watch the 34 walking groups and vehicles parading through the city centre.

But that’s not all! Right after the parade, the party will erupt at Stadhuisplein during the free Pride Vibes Festival, featuring no less than 30 artists, including the Belgian Eurovision contestant of 2023, Gustaph, singer/songwriter Kovacs, Make Up Your Mind judge ChelseaBoy, X-Factor winner Rochelle, and Eindhoven singer Jill Helena

The rest of the week is packed with various activities organized for and by Eindhoven. Enjoy a stunning 2.5-hour art performance by Drag Race Holland star Ma’MaQueen, participate in the interactive Queer Quiz led by ‘Dit was het nieuws’ presenter Harm Edens, join a panel talk on nightlife safety, or discover the Queer Film Festival!

Nata Per Te

FABIO MOLLO

“Nata Per Te” is the true and poignant story of Luca and Alba: it’s 2017 and the court in Naples is searching for a family for baby girl Alba, who has Down syndrome. After her birth, she was left at the hospital. Luca, a single gay man with a strong desire for fatherhood, fights to obtain custody of Alba. The world around them seems unprepared for it.

Palingdans

HANS DORTMANS

For centuries, unraveling the mystery of the reproduction cycle of the eel has proven elusive. From an expedition to the eel’s birthplace to experiments attempting to breed eels in a laboratory, it’s clear that we’re making considerable efforts to unlock this mystery. With the imminent revelation of the reproduction secret, we may finally secure our consumption of eels. However, could our dominance over nature further endanger this ancient fish?

Pulp Fiction

QUINTIN TARANTINO

Tarantino’s second film elevated the director to superhero status of independent cinema and marked the comeback of former teen idol Travolta. Three stories from criminal circles are interwoven into a perfect whole. Film lecturer Twan Arts takes you on “The path of the righteous man” and will tell you everything that makes this film a true game changer. And afterward, you’ll, of course, watch Pulp Fiction, finally back on the big screen.

Spoorloos

George Sluizer

“Spoorloos” is the thrilling adaptation of Tim Krabbé’s novel “Het gouden ei,” in which a young woman disappears at a gas station during a vacation to South France. Her husband obsessively continues to search for her for years. The Dutch classic by George Sluizer has been restored and is returning to the big screen. On this evening, an introduction to the film will be provided.

Cursus filmsteden

What would a film like Taxi Driver be without the city of New York? When you think about elements that shape your movie experience, you probably immediately think of actors, but sometimes the city within a film is almost as important as the main characters. As a filmmaker, you can comfortably ride on clichés, although some directors go against them, trying to show us the city in a different light. On three different evenings, Rudi de Boer will take you on a city trip through Paris, London, and New York.

Wat je bewaart, bewaart je

Vulnerability and memories, two themes that are important in the work of artist Mayke Verhoeven.

Two words, which will also be at the heart core of the artist at Artspace T56. She will be search for a deepening of her work, based on the themes of vulnerability and memory.

She has previously been in Naples and Pompeii in residence to learn more about archaeological finds and their stories. But also in our own region Brabant, many excavations are still being being done.

‘I try to connect what I learned earlier connected with this’ is her explanation. By using different materials in her work, such as sugar and also lead, her sculptures become fragile and impermanent, giving them a personal character.

Dreams of Dreams of Dreams

This is an exhibition and public program that explores the transformative power of imagination when fueled by a collective determination to break the status quo. Featuring artworks ranging from installations to objects and visual images, this expo offers a captivating insight into the complex relationship between dreams and reality.

Looking away

As I stepped out of my car, I narrowly avoided the broken box of cream puffs. Had I stepped on it, the cream would likely have ended up ‘everywhere and nowhere’ on my skirt and shoes. I looked at the wilted pastries and my thoughts immediately turned to whoever had left the box in the parking lot; how inconsiderate! Did they accidentally drop the puffs and then not bother to pick them up? Did they think, ‘Just leave it there’?

I felt irritation rising at the thoughtlessness and indifference, and I decided to leave the damaged pastries where they were. I, as an outsider, didn’t have to pick them up, did I? I wasn’t the one who left them there, so I wasn’t responsible. ...Right?

But as I went about my shopping, I felt increasingly guilty. Why hadn’t I taken the time to throw away this mess, even if it wasn’t mine? I decided to pick up the squashed puffs and throw them away as soon as I got back to my car. The idea made me feel a little better. However, when I returned to my car, there was nothing there. Someone else had picked them up. They had not looked away but had cleaned up the mess, likely without even being annoyed at the litterer. Now I felt even worse. I, who hold norms and values in high regard and often promote them unprompted, had been silently corrected by an anonymous fellow citizen who did take the time to pick up someone else’s trash.

I reflected on this small incident. Apparently, my negative judgement of the litterer had been stronger than the positive feeling of helping to keep the environment clean. Pointing fingers and looking away seemed the easiest thing to do, but it felt anything but good. Looking away brings guilt, at least for me. I feel this guilt more and more these days. I read the newspaper, watch news channels. I half-listen or sometimes turn the channel off and do something else. So much misery - I sometimes just don’t want to see it anymore. I choose to look away.

Looking away on a smaller scale (like with the cream puffs) may come from laziness or indifference. On a global scale, looking away is more about selfpreservation. It’s a kind of escape to distance yourself from an uncomfortable or even dangerous situation fuelled by fear or uncertainty. In our complex society, this is a daily routine.

Yet this uncomfortable guilt can also bring about something good; it can be a powerful wake-up call. It’s a strong feeling that forces you to reflect on your own behaviour and actions, or rather ... the lack of action. Is this me? Do I want to be like this? Do I want to go through life as a passive complainer, or will I take action to make the world a little better - even if it’s just a drop in the ocean? Within all of us lies someone who looks away but also someone who takes action, who helps, or who offers a shoulder to cry on. Just look at what a few squashed cream puffs can trigger. I look out my window across the street, where several stray cats have been roaming the vacant lot for a while. This morning, I brought a bag of cat food - with permission from my own spoiled house cats, of course. The strays will get a delicious meal. Not looking away, but seeing and doing, and as you can see, it doesn’t always have to be grand and dramatic.

“ After the urgent letter I sent on 7th May, in which I expressed great concern about the possible departure of the Academy, fortunately, a lot has happened at the Academy. When Kiki and Joost were told that the Academy might move to Roermond, they quickly mobilized a small group of designers on whose behalf I sent the letter to understand the process, what was known at the time and bring it into the open. We weren’t the only ones who were alarmed, and the impending disaster became apparent almost simultaneously, announced to different people through all kinds of channels.

How is it possible that an academy, so intertwined with the city, is even considering leaving? We have now become busybodies, uninvited guests, but ultimately welcome, with almost everyone sat at the table, but we still don’t understand how it could have come to this, but are increasingly moving in the same direction. Lucas Maassen organised an auction at the Residency of the People, the proceeds of which will be used to help retain the Academy in Eindhoven. Almost 10,000 Euros have been raised, that is about one-thousandth of the total needed.

The proverbial ’drop in the ocean’, but quite a lot of money and it was a positive moment. You just have to carry on; an activity that, by definition, does not solve the problem but is of symbolic value. The auction marks a point at which it becomes clear that to achieve the common goal you must be positive. The need must be felt, and the will must be there to achieve success. There was no choice. Join in with this compelling positivity or drop out and no longer participate. It seems like everyone is participating. And now to solve it! ”

The Design Academy must stay in Eindhoven

dna of grounded Pride

Eindhoven’s finest

MIGGS DE BRUIJN X LIRICAL X SANDERSVILLE - THE DAY AFTER

After the exuberant festivities surrounding PSV’s national championship, a feeling of euphoria still prevails in Eindhoven. The city is united by the love for their football club and the musical expression that surrounds this success. This collective of artists, known as Eindhoven’s Finest, consists of a mix of local musical talents who have combined their passion for the city and club into a joint project: a championship album with 25 tracks. Among the artists are well-known names such as Guus Meeuwis, DJ La Fuente, RUGGED, Schorre Chef & MC Vals, Lampegastuh, and Zany, as well as various supporter groups. Their shared mission is clear: to express, through music, their love and pride for Eindhoven and PSV.

| PHOTO’S: EDDIE

The highlight of the celebrations took place on Stadhuisplein, where more than 100,000 fans gathered to honour their champions. It was a moment of pure joy and unity, with the sounds of Eindhoven’s Finest echoing through the streets. The project symbolized the unity and love for the colours, the club, and the city, capturing the hearts of everyone present. The day after PSV’s honouring, we met Miggs De Bruijn, Lirical, and Sandersville, still recovering from the festivities but with just as many good vibes as in the days before.

One Song That Says It All: DNA “Football supporter songs play a crucial role in football culture. They reinforce the sense of connection and loyalty within the community. With Eindhoven’s Finest, we created 25 songs to honour our 25th National Championship Title. I would describe this as a form of reserved, sober pride. That pride is at our core; it’s an essential part of our DNA.”

Waïl Ali, better known as Lirical, refers to the song ‘DNA,’ written and produced alongside Miggs de Bruijn and Sandersville under the banner of Eindhoven’s Finest: “‘DNA’ says it all; it shows our pride and highlights the unique bond between the club and its supporters. We don’t shout, but we wear our pride. Don’t mess with Eindhoven; we will always fight for our city. And if you want to join us, you’re more than welcome. That’s how easy-going it is. That is the core, that reserved core.”

“It turned into a real co-production: with collaboration in music, lyrics, and production. And how wonderful: almost all players are featured. That makes this song so special; you can feel it.” Producer Sandersville, Sander Maassen, explains how ‘DNA’ came to be: “We organized a writing camp with artists and the passionate PSV supporter groups in RUGGED’s studio. We were taken to the stadium beforehand to enjoy the match and get in the right mood. Then we headed back to the studio, and the creation process began. The concept of ‘DNA’ came together quickly and was truly the definition of a well-oiled machine between producers, artists, and supporter groups.”

Rapper MDB, Lirical, and Sandersville: you are three renowned names in music, and now your collaboration, along with many other musicians, turns out to be a golden move.

“In Amsterdam and Rotterdam, collaborations like these have been happening for years. It’s great that Eindhoven is now embracing it too, but it’s still not so common,” says the Congolese-Dutch rapper Migue Bolambe, better known as

28 EINDHOVEN’S FINEST

Miggs de Bruijn, or MDB for short. “This is the first record we’ve made together, but there will definitely be a follow-up. I have a lot of music ready, and opportunities like this come in handy.” And the collaborations are expanding. Musicians join in, participate, and work together more. Sander adds: “I’ve been working with the boys from RUGGED, the renowned DJ/producer collective from Eindhoven, for years. They are largely leading in Eindhoven’s Finest, and our collaboration creates great opportunities for me - a golden match.”

Miggs adds: “Because the championship became a reality, we started two months ago. We tested the song ‘DNA’ on Instagram and TikTok. It was picked up immediately, even before we released it. A success, therefore. Since then, we’ve been performing, giving interviews, and doing photoshoots. The highlight now is the celebration and the parties. It’s all really amazing!”

And now, it’s time to sober up again. What does tomorrow look like for you?

Lirical: “Spreading ‘DNA’ is already in our blood. All three of us have been performing at festivals all over the country for years. We are the DNA. We don’t shout, but we are who we are. That’s the DNA of the city, of the club, and of our heart.” Sandersville: “And what many people may not know is that many great DJs from Eindhoven have been performing all over the world for a long time.” Miggs: “See, there’s that sober pride again. That’s just our DNA, we can’t help it.” n

‘Eindhoven’s Finest is a collective consisting of artists, supporter groups, and people who hold the club and the city dear.’
‘This is the culture of the city; our song DNA comes from the heart, from the core. With a group of local musicians, DJs, and producers, we represent the music scene in Eindhoven and our vibrant PSV heart.’

Listen on Spotify: “EINDHOVEN’S FINEST X Miggs De Bruijn X Lirical - DNA (Prod. By SANDERSVILLE)”. The track is also available on all other streaming services such as Apple Music and social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube.

Swedding dresses

Smitje: fashion design shop Eindhoven

mitje is a haberdashery specialist. Still old-fashioned, where your senses are assailed by all the types and colours on offer. You might as well call Smitje a colourful design shop. Customers from far and wide know how to find the store, looking for fabrics, needles, zips, embroidery tape, elastic, wool, and yarn applications. If you want it, Smitje has it. The same goes for an affordable wedding or prom dress. But Smitje also has the fabric to make the dresses herself.

Harrie Smits (73) has been working in the business since he was fourteen. He still sells zips, yarn, cords, wool, knitting needles, scissors, needles and beads every day. The button collection is the largest in Europe. From mother-of-pearl to plastic. From iron to gold and silver. Two walls full. A sight now that breathless tourists gratefully photograph. Not to mention the time they - shouldtake to make a choice…

He is still the face of the store and intends to remain so for the time being. Smitje was founded in 1921 and was first located in Strijp. Harrie took over the business from his father after working in the store for years. Smitje has been in a medieval building in the city centre since the early 1990s. To accommodate the thousands of haberdashery items, Harrie bought the adjacent buildings and built a few floors on top. The business took on something of a colourful maze. Where the prom dresses now hang used to be the hayloft.

Smitje on the Kleine Berg is one of the few traditional shops in Eindhoven city centre. A shop full of buttons, ribbons, and fabrics. Ideas have been able to become reality here for more than a hundred years and your imagination is given free rein. Where you can find the dress of your dreams for the day of your life or a special dress to shine at a gala.

Harrie is an old-fashioned salesman. He is still in the store every day, together with his team of employees, including his 20-year-old granddaughter Jill and a sister-in-law. He enjoys the atmosphere and likes to have a chat with customers, old and young. Smitje may look nice and old-fashioned, but the business certainly keeps up with the times. A young designer, who also makes clothes for customers, works in the studio. They can also decide the design together with him. Harrie notes that more young people are finding their way to the store again. That is at times when something is popular again, such as knitting and design currently.

He also has an eye for the ecological aspect, so that our children’s children will still have a good environment in the future. “There is a wide range of environmentally friendly fabrics, in the hobby department we do as much as possible with fabrics. They also provide booklets about making your own clothing, repairing and reusing clothing. For example, you can make bags or stuffed animals. We promote recycling as much as possible.”

Challenge for the Eindhoven region:

How to welcome international talents while preserving its local Brabants identity?

In recent years, Eindhoven has emerged as a dynamic global hub of innovation and growth, driven by its vibrant tech scene and emerging startup ecosystem. With this growth comes the need for talent. In addition to investing in developing local talent, companies are compelled to focus on recruiting international talents to fill their vacancies as well.

To strengthen Europe as a green powerhouse, or in other words, to contribute to the European Bauhaus, space must be created to attract talents from around the world. This applies to the Eindhoven region as well. Without international talented individuals, we cannot become stronger and make the innovation leap necessary to achieve the goals of the European Green Deal and to compete with China and the US.

Recent research has shown that Europeans are less likely to move to other European countries compared to people within China and the US. As I observe my American and Chinese clients, I also note this conclusion. Talents are attracted by various regional incentives, and language makes it easy for people to seek their careers elsewhere. So, in this regard, Europe is not yet a unity compared to China and the US, while in my opinion, there is a need for it concerning Europe’s geoeconomic position in the world. To compete, efforts must be made within Europe and thus also the Netherlands to improve the mobility of Europeans and thereby also diversity and inclusion.

This brings an interesting discussion: how can the Eindhoven region maintain its own identity while simultaneously embracing a diverse range of cultures and backgrounds?

By collectively taking up this challenge. Regional businesses and organizations must take societal steps to support the integration of international employees into the local community. This could involve providing assistance with housing, healthcare, and legal matters, as well as facilitating networking opportunities and social activities. By helping employees feel at home in the Eindhoven region, companies can foster a greater sense of loyalty and engagement, ultimately benefiting both the individual and the organization.

Ultimately, the challenge of hiring international employees for growth in Eindhoven is not just about filling positions but also about building a stronger, more resilient, and cohesive community towards the future. By embracing diversity while preserving local identity, companies can create a more inclusive and vibrant ecosystem that attracts talent from around the world. By being open to this, Eindhoven can continue to thrive as a beacon of innovation and creativity, rooted in tradition but open to the possibilities of a green and sustainable future for the next generation.

‘Improve mobility, diversity and inclusion within Europe for a stronger, more resilient and future-proof community’
