May is the time for outdoors. For fresh air, new energy. A hint of spring passes through Eindhoven, festivals and fairs take place in the region. This time of year is being fully utilized in the Kempen: with a brand new festival in the rural areas, Eindhoven Backyard is tempting residents to get off the couch and invest in health and vitality for no fewer than four weekends in a row. Sports, games, exercise, and rest: from Kempervennen to the Belgian border, clinics, workshops and tours have been organized in Reusel - de Mierden, Bladel, Eersel and Bergeijk, all you have to do is join in and participate. Explore your own environment. Another festival that extends far beyond municipal boundaries into the region is the Bridge Guitar Festival. With big names such as The Robert Cray Band, Anneke van Giersbergen, Bertolf and Hallo Venray, the festival makes ‘the strings cry and the hearts pound’.

Guitar connects Brainport with music, on many stages in Eindhoven, but also with peripheral programmes in schools. Guitar legend Jack Hustinx sheds some light on it.

This Eindless we have chosen to keep it light. We have responded crisply and freshly to everything there is to do and point out new paths that you can take, discover and use. In short, we will outline many possibilities for you in May, allowing you to gain ground. Will you join?

Message in a bottle

Against all weather forecasts, the sun is shining brightly on this Sunday morning. The rays seem to illuminate the fresh, bright green leaves on the trees. I love spring. I touch the leaves of the beech hedge before getting into my car; they feel very soft, but in a few weeks, the softness will have transformed into sturdy, mature leaves. Youth in nature is short-lived. I glance at the daffodils in the pots beside the front door – their prime has passed too. If I can manage, I’ll replace the bulbs with something else beautiful this afternoon. Flowers make me happy; I couldn’t do without them. A quick grocery run in the early morning, still pleasantly quiet, then I’ll be done and can start my day off. There’s little traffic on the way to the supermarket. I pull into the almost empty parking lot, and suddenly, I see her cycling there. Wherever I go, she seems to be there too. I see her several times a week. In my mind, I call her ‘the collector lady’. Small but brave. Her bike adorned with bags filled with cans and plastic bottles. Her coat faded, a bag weathered by time slung over her shoulder. Through rain or shine, she cycles through Eindhoven, alert and pedalling steadily, following the same route every day. Sometimes I see her from my office, concentrated as she empties the bin across the street, not paying attention to her surroundings but solely focused on her task. Carefully, she retrieves the plastic bottles, casually discarded by others. I often wonder, ‘who is she, and why does she do this? Does she have a home? And how does she manage to cycle through the city day in, day out, doing this? Would she never get tired?’ As I park my car, she sets her bike down and cautiously reaches into the bin in search of plastic. My eye catches a plastic bottle lying next to me on the passenger’s seat. I step out and approach her; would she be startled by me? Can I strike up a conversation with her? As these questions swirl in my mind, I hear myself asking her, “Ma’am, would you like this bottle too?” She turns to me. A beautiful, weathered, friendly face meets mine.

A girlish expression with expressive, soft eyes. With a smile, she accepts the bottle. I tell her that I often see her cycling and that I’m glad to finally be able to speak with her. I expected some sort of rejection, but it didn’t come. She told me she faces a lot of competition; there are many collectors in Eindhoven. I thought aloud and asked her if we could help by collecting bottles for her now and then; she could then pick them up at our place on Aalsterweg, that is part of her daily route. She thinks it’s a good idea. She wants to know if there’s a staircase or an elevator in our building and how the door works when she comes in. We exchange our names and say goodbye to each other. She calls after me and wishes me a beautiful day. I already have one after this extraordinary encounter. Tomorrow I’ll look out of my window, hoping she comes. The bag with bottles is already prepared. All she has to do is wait for our door to open for her.

THE BRIDGE TO ‘BRIDGE’

Jack Hustinx Austin music in Brainport Eindhoven

Jack Hustinx, a legend. The born and raised Eindhoven resident was active in the heavy metal scene in his younger years, including with Dynamo Open Air and Aardschok. The musician/producer was a guitarist in several bands. Over the past 20 years he has alternated between Austin, Texas, and Eindhoven to live, work, live.

The last tours with Mallford Miligan, were a great success. He also joined the show of Johan Derksen - travelling through the country. After months of a wonderful trip through Louisiana and Texas, Hustinx really came to a standstill: at the airport he had a very nasty fall just before boarding. Eight weeks in hospital in Austin followed. Now he is recovering. Fortunately, Hustinx is blessed with a powerful character and great mental vitality, and he has his Ellen by his side. In combination with the music, these are the ingredients he uses to look forward. Every day it gets a little better.

You’ve settled in US too. When did you decided to live there?

“In 1998 I met Malford Milligan in Austin, Texas. I was blown away when I heard him sing with the band Storyville. He struck me; a soul singer of the old school, which makes him unique. There are only a handful of people like him in the world. His music feels like a forgotten art. I arrived in America the day before 9/11; a story in itself and a moment

never to be forgotten. I had to return to the Netherlands soon afterwards. Fortunately, I was able to travel back to the US six months later and settled in Austin, Texas. That’s where the story started.”

People say Eindhoven is the new Silicon Valley “I would rather compare Eindhoven with the new Austin. Having in mind in mind the two pillars that both cities have: the transition of the city and the musical and cultural roots. What is Silicon Valley now? It doesn’t say much.

‘My goal is to reach your heart’

Our region has many musical and cultural roots. Not only is Stratumseind known throughout the Netherlands, but Dynamo Open Air has also traditionally taken place here. And musicians such as Ruud van den Boogaard, JW Roy; JW has just moved back to the area. We recently went to Knegsel. In the performance Vergane Glorie (Faded Glory), Ruud van den Boogaard and Martijn Kuijten, together with Bjorn van der Doelen, pay a musical tribute to the outsiders and freebooters from Brabant. Those typically idiosyncratic characters, the deviation from the norm. We really laughed so much that evening. It was very nice to hear the life stories of these special people, who often had to do with smuggling, drinking and the bars.”

Region in transition

“I am proud of these developments. To be fair, Eindhoven and the surrounding area used to be looked at as if only farmers lived here. This is no longer the case. I read in the newspapers and see on the news that this region is growing the fastest. Smart people come to live here, and a lot is being invested.

We have grown like crazy, especially in the last ten years. This is largely due to ASML, which is a driving force for the region. Many companies and developments devised here are related to ASML. I hear about it through my friends, some of them work there. But if you ask me what they make, what

8 MUSIC CULTURE

‘My life revolves around music. Listening to music, writing music and playing music’

they do. That is beyond my reach. I don’t know what that business is about and maybe I don’t have to. Because I am a musician, that is my core business. I do see that it is all being taken more seriously because of the growth. Eindhoven and Helmond have become larger cities. More people live here, more people walk the streets, more cars on the roads. I like that a lot of English is spoken on the street. Is it a good development? I think so. The fact that bright minds in our region work very hard and develop many things is s omething to be proud of. But it is also going fast. I find it difficult to say whether it is of any use to me as a musician. And whether this changes music development? I assume so. Eindhoven had always been a city where a lot was done, and many festivals were organised. Such as the Bridge Festival - international guitar festival. I didn’t go last year because I was travelling, but the fact that it is being organized again this year is of course very good!”

Vibrant Brainport

“The term Brainport Eindhoven doesn’t mean much to me. For me, ASML is perhaps the same as Brainport. I hadn’t noticed that it is also on the PSV shirt, but I’m not a huge football fan either, so I only watch a match very occasionally. On TV the term is associated with technological developments. While Eindhoven has always been a vibrant city, I think it is important that the city retains its charm. It should not alienate itself from its past, because this is precisely the nice thing about Eindhoven. But we are there ourselves.” n

Musician and producer Jack Hustinx was a member of the Shiner Twins and produced Life Will Humble You, Sweet Cherry Soul for Stagger Lee Records and I Was a Witness for Malford Milligan. He made the solo album Over Yonder with friends from Austin. Jack enjoys going to the theatre and watching TV shows such as The Sopranos and Treme, which is about the rebuilding of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina

Where are your skills? What do you ask of employees? Scan the QR code!

Open vacancies are a challenge for many employers. That, while plenty of people are sitting on the couch at home. How is that possible? A better question is: how can employers fill their vacancies? Passport for Work helps by working skills-oriented.

Wendy Duijvesteijn is working on Passport for Work on behalf of the Eindhoven Municipality. This is about matching employers and job seekers with the right skills. “What is unique is that Passport for Work is about skills, talents, and abilities, and not so much about qualifications. It will only be a real success if all parties support it: job seekers, employers, but also all kinds of organizations in the labour market and education. Then you really get a working culture in which skills count.”

TUNE IN TO SKILLS

Passport for Work is carried out by Huis naar Werk, among others. Here, at Stadhuisplein in Eindhoven, they help companies and residents with questions about training, development, or work. They help job seekers with their so-called skill print. Natasja Muskens from Leerwerkloket, one of Huis naar Werks’s partners, advises em-

ployers on how they can find employees. “You have to look at job seekers in a different way. Tune your organization to ability and skills. Do that, and a world of talent will open up for you.”

SOFT SKILLS

At Passport for Work, job seekers and employers find each other online. Passport for Work helps job seekers create their skills print. “They discover their talents and skills in a game-like way,” says Wendy. “These are often even more important than technical skills. Once it has been completed, a skills print will be released, a kind of CV but focused on personal skills. Employers can post their job profiles in Passport for Work. If skills and job profile tally, then there is a match.”

IDVERDE

Green company, idverde, is happy with Passport for Work. They look critically at what is really

needed to fill job profiles with skills. Kim de Winter from idverde: “The green industry needs a lot of people. We believe that as a green worker you can get started with certain activities if you enjoy working outside with your hands and have some additional skills and certificates. A ‘real’ diploma is not always necessary!”

SCAN THE CODE OR VISIT PASSPORTFORWORK.NL

Wendy is happy because the tool is working well. “That is because job seekers and employers are increasingly working together better. I say to job seekers: scan the QR code or go to passportforwork.nl. You can then immediately get started with your skill print. I say to employers: register and see how Passport for Work helps you recruit employees. Passport for Work is still in development, but it really is the path to new opportunities in the labour market! n

May shows a great variety of activities to do in the city in the field of music, theater & expositions. Stay tuned, go out!

Let’s talk about Europe

We are Europe, but what does Europe mean to me? This week, we let theater creators, thinkers and doers speak about life in the European Union.

With 6 performances such as De grote Europashow, which focuses on the elections and prepares you for the voting booth. But also the dance performance Kites, in which Roshanak Morrowatian shares her experiences of growing up in a refugee center and fleeing through memories and flashbacks. Het achtste leven (voor Brilka) is a play that tells the story of a family during the coldest winter of the early 20th century and the rise and fall of the Soviet Union and the fall of the Iron Curtain from the perspective of women from different generations.

During this week, there are 3 more performances: Dialoog over burgerschap, Europa: Wat is ons verhaal? and Fight Night.

CLUB GUY & RONI INVITES: CECILIA MOISIO

International dance company Club Guy & Roni annually invites a promising creator to Club Guy & Roni Invites. This time they welcome the Finnish choreographer Cecilia Moisio. Sheis seen as one of the most eclectic makers in our country and received a national award. ADI(C)SCO is a seemingly endless dance trip in search of intoxication, to keep going and losing yourself in it: addiction. The performance exudes the atmosphere of the disco era, in which the club scene and drugs became popular. It is a party that gets out of hand and never ends. With 70s aesthetics, extravagant characters and exciting beats.

Duel Reality

“Two households, both alike in dignity. In fair Verona, where we lay our scene. From ancient grudge break to new mutiny. Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.” - Romeo and Juliet.

7fingers takes this epic love story to its core, with the stage set as a sports arena. In Duel Reality, the audience witnesses two groups that stand against each other by default, due to their desire to rise above the other. Still, we catch a glimpse of the star-crossed lovers. They don’t seem to care who wins or loses, as long as the game can bring them closer together.

The man who fell from the sky

While everything in the universe strives for chaos, man tries again and again to bring order. But we have abolished most of the ideologies and structures that once helped us with that orientation; they were too restrictive to serve as a signpost. At the same time, the world seems to be on fire, and one crisis overshadows another. The Man who fell from the sky captures this collective feeling of being adrift and dislocated. The performers seem to have washed ashore. High in the air, they hang from branches of an uprooted tree, balancing on moving platforms. FR 17 MAY

Melike Sahin

Turkish pop singer Melike Şahin is coming to Eindhoven for the first time! Since her debut album “Merhem,” she has become a staple on the big stages in Türkiye. She toured the world with the psychedelic cult band BaBa ZuLa, and since 2017, she has been conquering the charts with a mix of pop, psychedelic, and electronic music, as well as influences from the disco scene, with songs like “Deli Kan” and “Nasır.”

Hélène Grimaud

Hélène Grimaud is ‘one of a kind’. Aside from her piano career, she also fights for animal rights: in the 90’s of the previous century she founded a conservation centre for wolves in the state of New York. Grimaud is also committed to defending human rights and is the author of four books. In Eindhoven she will present her musical skills in the Great Pianists series.

Gino Vannelli

With over 40 years in the spotlight, Gino Vannelli remains a musical chameleon, effortlessly navigating through rock, jazz, soul, and classical domains. Alongside true classics like “Brother to Brother,” “I Just Wanna Stop,” and “Hurts to Be In Love,” you will also hear newer songs tonight. His distinctive voice, often mentioned in the same breath as his iconic curly hair, resonates with timeless melodies that have garnered over 20 million records sold worldwide.

In the fifth edition of 00’s Alternative, we’re taking you on a nostalgic trip to the first decade of the millennium. DJs Nicole and Odet are throwing the birthday party of the year with the coolest music from 2000 to 2009. Dust off your old MP3 player with old-school hits and put on your skinny jeans. Whether your alt-heart beats faster to The Offspring, The Strokes, Avril Lavigne, Bring Me The Horizon, Radiohead, Muse, or MGMT; on Friday, May 10th, you’ll hear them all in our Small Hall! FR

This time she will play-conduct the legendary Academy of St Martin in the Fields, named after a magnificent church in the heart of London where it all once began in 1959. A programme consisting of Schubert, Bartók and Beethoven’s two Romances for violin.

King Sisters – Close to Harmony

As close as these three sisters are to each other, they are equally individualistic. In their attempt to come together, the distance between them becomes palpable. How close is too close?

In this physical, acapella performance, the trio gets extremely close, even crawling into each other’s skin. Through ritualistic joint singing, close harmony, and personal texts, they expose their desires for- and fears of-intimacy.

Goldkimono is not your everyday singer-songwriter. Goldkimono - real name Tienus Konijnenburg - hails from Utrecht but was born in California. And you can hear that. In addition to his own music, Tienus has also worked as a producer with acts like Kygo and Tai Verdes.

Passion and Romance SPRING CONCERT BRAHMS, VIOLIN CONCERTO IN D MAJEUR

CÉSAR FRANCK, SYMFONIE IN D MINOR

The violin concerto by Brahms is one of the most important works in the violin repertoire. Technically, the concerto is very demanding: it makes extensive use of polyphony, broken chords, fast passages, and rhythmic variations. The Dutch violinist Lisa Jacobs is one of the leading musicians of her generation and is celebrated for her passionate, virtuosic play, surprising programs, and stage presence combined with her profound musicality.

Pete Philly & Perquisite

Jazzy hip-hop, broken beats, and soulful vibes: Pete Philly & Perquisite are back in action! With a new album on the horizon, they’ll be gracing the Main Hall of Effenaar on Sunday, May 26th.

With iconic albums like ‘Mindstate’ and ‘Mystery Repeats,’ vocalist Pete Philly and producer Perquisite toured the world between 2004 and 2009. After going their separate ways, they reunited last year for a concert at AFAS Live, followed by the announcement of a new album.

Groot Omroepkoor

The Netherlands Radio Choir is the only choir in the Netherlands that performs the great choral-symphonic repertoire in a professional manner.

‘The perfect balance between baroque transparency and romantic rapture,’ wrote La Place de l’Opéra.

And the Volkskrant: ‘Amazing pace and exuberance.’ Beautiful a cappella choral works by Poulenc, Mendelssohn, and Martin.

Pynarello

This project, Pynarello is venturing into Tchaikovsky’s sixth, which the composer himself said was his best work. However, a mysterious atmosphere surrounds this last Tchaikovsky symphony, as the composer died nine days after conducting the premiere in 1893. Theories circulate about cholera, suicide, his hidden homosexuality, but nothing surrounding his death has ever been proven. This mysterious history is the starting point for Pynarello’s journey of discovering Symphony Pathétique.

Storioni on Sunday

We have embarked on an unforgettable journey through chamber music gems, unique locations in the city and culinary delights and now we have reached the grand finale of the Storioni Festival. The closing concert opens with Beethoven’s playful opus 44, in which the young Ludwig challenges us with increasingly virtuosic variations on a very simple theme. Then we enter the realm of the nearly forgotten composer Rabl with his opus 1, a captivating discovery presented to us by Sharon Kam.

Not the people, but the Maple, the Lampposts, the Public Toilet, the Chimney, the Beetles under the tiles and the Kiosk on the square play the leading role. The day breaks, a garbage can blows over, a plastic bag gets tangled in the branches of a tree, a pigeon poops on the statue, the crocuses open. RADICALLY MINE!

A FIRST PODIUM FOR YOUNG ARTISTS FROM EINDHOVEN

Where is your foundation, what makes you who you are? And where do we find common ground? With these and other questions, more than 300 schoolchildren from Eindhoven and the surrounding area worked on the project Radically Mine!

The theme of this 15th edition is common ground. The participants also drew inspiration from the Van Abbemuseum’s collection. They each made a personal artwork about what connects them. A selection of the works is on display in the exhibition Radically Mine! There, they literally bring their ideas into the limelight and show their vision to a wider audience.

“It’s very cool that young people get a chance to exhibit their art in a museum. And it was really nice to be taken seriously by everyone that helped organize Radically Mine!” - Esmee van Hoek, young artist and participant of Radically Mine! in 2023.

ART

DE GROTE STILTE

MIKE DINGS – BERRY SANDERS

The exhibition combines the work of two painters. Mike Dings finds inspiration in the classic genre of Western, in particular Spaghetti Westerns. These Italian films appropriate the style of the Hollywood fantasy of the Wild West. Similar like the movie makers of Spaghetti Westerns, Mike Dings asks how much information do we need in an image to sketch a whole scene? For Berry Sanders, painting is a way of thinking and imagining the world. Painting is getting a grip on reality. His subjects are dystopian, whether based on architecture, landscape or interior views, with or without people as part of the pictorial space.

Floating, bearing, lifting, carrying – intricate life, retreating into a ‘carrier bag’. Seemingly dead on the outside, but bubbling, transforming, incubating inside. We move past it, mourning the soup of life, working our way through the compost heap, where we digest the old and make space for... MU

Their aim is to experiment with art to stimulate the imagination. The idea is to create lifelike heads of artists and then transform them into large lollipops made of lollipop sugar. This makes it intriguing and surreal. Europe’s Green Leadership: The EU Green Deal

In a world increasingly characterized by deglobalization, where regional favoritism seems to become the norm, Europe is on the verge of charting a new course with the EU Green Deal. While the superpowers China and the US assert their geoeconomic power by controlling crucial resources, Europe finds itself caught between two fires. Instead of succumbing to division, the EU takes the lead in the fight against a much larger threat: climate change.

The EU Green Deal is more than just a policy initiative; it’s a call to action, a vision of a sustainable future for all. With 500 million consumers in its market, the EU sets a standard that the world can follow. But not everyone is convinced that this is the right path. Some fear that the policy goes too far, potentially choking the economy and undermining Europe’s competitiveness.

Nevertheless, the EU remains determined. With the Brussels Effect in mind, the influence the EU exerts through its regulations, the EU is convinced that it can shape the world in its image. The CSRD, a reporting requirement of the EU Green Deal, is a perfect example of this. With 82 reporting obligations and over a thousand data points, the EU compels companies to be more transparent and accountable, while simultaneously creating a level playing field for all EU member states. But why this Green Deal? Why this drive for sustainability and transparency? The answer lies in the necessity to collaborate, to build trust, not only among consumers and investors but also among EU member states themselves and with the rest of the world. Because one green member state cannot make a difference; only together can we effect real change.

That’s why the EU is working on a central European Single Access Point (ESAP), which will provide stakeholders with electronic access to all public financial and sustainability information of European companies. It’s a step towards more transparency, more accountability, and more cooperation, so that together we can overcome the challenges of the 21st century.

While the world continues to fragment, Europe remains committed to its vision of a greener, fairer future for everyone. And with the EU Green Deal as our guide, the EU is determined to further strengthen its role as a global leader in sustainability and geoeconomics.

Together with our business partners and colleagues at Crowe, we are committed to leveraging our expertise and experience to contribute to this noble endeavor. Personally, I believe that transfer pricing advisors play a crucial role in applying our knowledge of value chains to support international companies in achieving the objectives of the EU Green Deal. Through collaboration and innovation, we believe that we can pave the way towards a more sustainable and prosperous future.

‘Our nature is a source

Many people in Eindhoven do not realize that around the corner there is a beautiful backyard: the wonderful countryside in and around Eindhoven, including the Kempen. The forests and heathlands invite you to sporty and peaceful activities, from mountain biking to yoga. Every reason to organize four challenging and relaxing free activities in May & June! Everyone from the Brainport region is welcome in the rural areas of Eersel-Bergeijk or Reusel-de Mierde.

Young and old, born, raised or expat. Experienced athlete or beginner; Everyone can get acquainted with Brainport’s backyard: Eindhoven Backyard.

GertJan van Gerven, who works at Visit Bergeijk, is one of the inventors of Eindhoven Backyard and the driving force behind the concept.

This year, for the first time, there will be activities for four weekends in a row to promote how beautiful the countryside around Eindhoven is and to link the health aspect to it. “The natural environment in which we live is a source of vitality. Vitality is about being energetic, but also about calming down and relaxing. We have so much beautiful countryside here where we can recharge our batteries. Eindhoven Backyard should make this possible. When it comes to Brainport, people still think mainly about the economy and an organization like Brainport which for everyone is there to keep people financially fit. But nature is also very good for people. There they can enjoy themselves in sports or just relax.” GertJan is happy that companies and associations are accepting the outstretched hand of Eindhoven Backyard and presenting themselves during the four weekends.

“We’re going to do great things. For example, at Montana Skicenter you can slide down the snow slope during the adventure run. The assault course at Rofra is used. This way you immediately promote these companies. And cycling club ‘Het Snelle Wiel’ from Bladel will help with MTB activities.” In addition, Eindhoven Backyard has also entered a partnership with students from the Fontys Pulsed course who have devised sustainability solutions for the various events, including biodegradable food bowls and returning compost to nature.

Adventure on the Kempervennen

On 15 June, Centerparcs Kempervennen will be the focus of all activities. The start and finish of the Adventure Runs are at the holiday park in Westerhoven. General

manager Kees Luijbregts has immediately embraced the Eindhoven BackYard initiative. We have had good contacts with Visit Bergeijk for years. We immediately thought this was a very nice initiative. As Kempervennen, we certainly also focus on sporting and adventurous activities, older youth are an important part of our audience. The people who spend the night at Kempervennen usually come from a bit further away, but of course we also attract many day visitors. We also notice that people from Eindhoven are often pleasantly surprised when they experiencehow beautiful it is here and what fun things you can do in the Kempen. Every reason to draw more attention to this!

‘We have so much beautiful nature where we can recharge our batteries’

Our new outdoor activity center will open soon, with climbing activities, a zipwire and a zip line. We will raffle tickets for this during Eindhoven Backyard.”

Yoga at Ter Spegelt

Those who prefer peace and quiet can participate in one of the beach yoga sessions on Camping Ter Spegelt’s sandy beach in Eersel on 8 or 9 June. Molly Henderson from Ghent provides these lessons.

“But for me as an Australian, Eersel is nearby. Practicing yoga outside feels very different from inside,” she says. “You feel the sand, the wind in your face, you see the sky.

That makes it a very special experience.” Everyone can participate, Molly emphasizes. “You don’t have to be young and flexible. The exercises are very calm, it is about calmness, slowing down, relaxing.” Molly focuses on breathing. “If you cannot sit properly on the floor, you can also participate in a chair or wheelchair.” Each participant receives headphones. You hear music that helps you relax and Molly’s instructions. They are in English. “But I talk very calmly, and I also demonstrate the movements. So that’s never really a problem.”

Forest bathing in silence

You can experience a completely different way of experiencing nature with Joost van Pagée (hetbosin.nu).

Under his guidance, you will immerse yourself in nature, in silence, in a 2.5-hour session. “You can turn off the phones or leave them at home. A moment to forget about time. There is no talking, so you use all your senses. What grows in nature, what does that leaf taste like? You connect with nature at a very slow pace. You experience how you connect with the environment around you. Really relax.” The forest bathing session is not suitable for (young) children and dogs. “This is because as a participant you want to have all the space and freedom to optimally experience, without distractions. To stay with your own experience.”

There is something for everyone during these four weekends at Eindhoven Backyard that will suit him or her.

GertJan van Gerven: “We want to show that collaboration pays off. This is now a pilot and hopefully we can roll it out from 2025 and beyond in, for example, de Groote Heide, de Peel and de Meierij and the parks in Eindhoven itself, so that Eindhoven Backyard will expand like an oil slick across all 21 municipalities.” n

32 WELL-BEING

AN INSPIRED & BALANCED LIFE WITH WELL BEING COACH JULIANN LIU

Qi Gong: The path to inner strength and well-being

Juliann Liu’s story is fascinating and absolutely out of the ordinary. Here’s how, through her illness, a manager dedicated to her work understood how to listen deeply to her body. She discovered an ancient and thousand-year-old technique like qui gong in France and then explored it passionately in China on the Wu Dang Mountains, an important center of Taoism, famous for its version of martial arts and Tai Chi.

Qi Gong was developed thousands of years ago as part of traditional Chinese medicine. It involves using exercises to optimize body, mind, and spirit energy to improve and maintain health and well-being.

Qi Gong has psychological and physical components that regulate the mind, breath, and body’s movement and posture. If you want to learn this ancient discipline, it is with pleasure that we point out the courses offered.

Could you tell us your story?

After my studies in business management, I worked for seven years at Decathlon as a supply manager. I was working in France, motivated, very sporty, and active. I did all kinds of activities, from taekwondo to kung fu. Then, at 28 years old, out of the blue, I had two surgeries on my liver gallbladder. Within two months of being in hospitals in Lyon, I was in choc. I started to think deeply about what was going on in my life. I never had time before to do it. To meditate about it was a painful process. All those questions had brought me to different people, different pieces of training, and slowly a different path, a new way to recharge my body, energy, well-being, and life.

So, you started to practice Qi Gong. Do you already know it?

It is funny. My first experience was in France! For my generation, it is an activity for older adults. If I ask my mother if she does qigong, she replies, “I’m not that old,” and she’s 65. When I started, I felt my body getting better gently, finally recharging my energies. Mindfulness means giving your body space and time to heal, and it works. At that moment, I decided to return to China to discover the roots and philosophy behind this discipline. First, I went to the Wu Dang mountain to learn tai chi and Qi Gong from the source. It took me two years to try different masters and teachers.

You realized that you wanted to take a career break, and five years later, you became a life coach and trainer.

It’s a journey to find what gives me meaning and energy, what is my calling. I suffered as a leader simply because I didn’t know how to take care of my stress, anxiety, and health. Today, we see more and more burnout. I know how much a leader has to be strong. Being assertive means being like water: being peaceful and solid inside. Calm and peace help you face stressful situations and take responsibility for yourself and others. You can only take care of yourself, being a leader for others, if you take responsibility for your being. That is why I call one of my workshops Empower Yourself Like Water. Now, I am a facilitator of Human Ecology and a Wellbeing Coach, offering seminars, workshops, and individual coaching. Inspired by Eastern wisdom and Western methodology, I devote my professional life to helping advance a world in authentic leadership: a world in which people wake up every morning inspired, empowered, and joyful to fulfill their chosen work and responsibilities. In other words, people become real leaders of their organizations and natural leaders of their lives.

Why can Qui Gong help those kinds of people and needs?

Qi Gong means Energy Work in Chinese. It means the practice of harmonizing the circulation of energy in our bodies. It’s based on an important principle: our problems, physical, mental, emotional, and even relational, are due to blockage of energy. All the traditional Asian techniques, like acupuncture, massage, Qi Gong, Tai Chi, Gong Fu, meditation, etc., unblock the energy flow and make the energy circulation harmonious again. When the energy is blocked, a person may get stressed and negative when facing an obstacle or difficulty. But when the energy flows harmoniously in this person, he may take this obstacle as a step towards his goal without wasting energy by becoming negative. In that sense, the practice of Qi Gong can be exciting for many of us be-

cause it’s one of the ways to recharge and balance our energy to release stress and negativity so that we can become calm and firm inside. It’s a way of preventing mental and physical problems; it can also be a therapeutic way to help people release their symptoms through yoga, meditation, and mindfulness practices. At the end of each coaching session or in all the workshops, I always give my clients specific exercises according to their problems or needs to become more autonomous after several sessions.

Would you organize some sessions soon?

Qi Gong is one of my daily practices, but teaching it is like a hobby. In 2024, I plan to share more well-being workshops for individuals looking to transform their lives. So, I planned some workshops to share knowledge and practices on the six levels of our solid well-being: physical, emotional, mental, energetic, systemic, and spiritual. The next one is on May 25th. A second will be held in July. Then, a 3-day workshop will be in November. Some tiny free conferences or mini-workshops before and in between so people can have some experience.

What is your favorite place in Eindhoven?

Genneperhoeve. It is unique and symbolic for me. When a healthy and sustainable ecosystem is inside, we can thrive naturally outside for the long term. Is there any other city where you can walk on an organic farm in the center, especially a town famous for technology? “ n

Smitje: The Eindhoven and Surrounding Area Design Shop

Smitje on the Kleine Berg is one of the few traditional shops in Eindhoven city centre. A shop full of buttons, ribbons, and fabrics. Ideas have been able to become reality here for more than a hundred years and your imagination is given free rein. Where you can find the dress of your dreams for the day of your life or a special dress to shine at a gala.

Smitje is a haberdashery specialist. Still old-fashioned, where your senses are assailed by all the types and colours on offer. You might as well call Smitje a colourful design shop. Customers from far and wide know how to find the store, looking for fabrics, needles, zips, embroidery tape, elastic, wool, and yarn applications. If you want it, Smitje has it. The same goes for an affordable wedding or prom dress. But Smitje also has the fabric to make the dresses herself. Harrie Smits (73) has been working in the business since he was fourteen. He still sells zips, yarn, cords, wool, knitting needles, scissors, needles and beads every day. The button collection is the largest in Europe. From mother-of-pearl to plastic. From iron to gold and silver. Two walls full. A sight now that breathless tourists gratefully photograph. Not to mention the time they - shouldtake to make a choice…

He is still the face of the store and intends to remain so for the time being. Smitje was founded in 1921 and was first located in Strijp. Harrie took over the business from his father after working in the store for years. Smitje has been in a medieval building in the city centre since the early 1990s. To accommodate the thousands of haberdashery items, Harrie bought the adjacent buildings and

built a few floors on top. The business took on something of a colourful maze. Where the prom dresses now hang used to be the hayloft.

Harry is an old-fashioned salesman. He is still in the store every day, together with his team of employees, including his granddaughter Jill and a sister-in-law. He enjoys the atmosphere and likes to have a chat with customers, old and young. Smitje may look nice and old-fashioned, but the business certainly keeps up with the times. A young designer, who also makes clothes for customers, works in the studio. They can also decide the design together with him. Harrie notes that more young people are finding their way to the store again. That is at times when something is popular again, such as knitting and design currently.

He also has an eye for the ecological aspect, so that our children’s children will still have a good environment in the future. “There is a wide range of environmentally friendly fabrics, in the hobby department we do as much as possible with fabrics. They also provide booklets about making your own clothing, repairing and reusing clothing. For example, you can make bags or stuffed animals. We promote recycling as much as possible.”

‘I would like to make a difference for my own city’

As Strategic Housing Advisor, I am responsible for the Eindhoven Municipality housing policy and for its implementation

In the coming years, I will be working on a new housing programme and providing strategic advice on large area developments such as KnoopXL and Stadhuisplein. I also represent Eindhoven in consultations on the theme of living in the region, for example, with the G5 cities and with the Provincial and National Government.

Why did you start working for the Municipality?

Because I want to make a difference for my own city. I want to ensure that our city becomes even more beautiful and fun to live in, so that my children and other city residents also have a bright future in Eindhoven.

What projects are you working on?

This includes the development of a new residential programme and area developments such as Stadhuisplein, Emmasingelkwadrant and KnoopXL.

What does an average day look like for you?

That varies from day to day, and it is almost always very varied. There are often many things going on at the same time, so you must constantly switch between different topics. For example, within the working hours of a day, I first give advice about a large new residential tower in KnoopXL, I then speak to one of my team members about her work package, and then I write a council file about new policy. In between, I also speak with the parties in the city who ultimately ensure that many homes are built.

How do you see your future, within the Eindhoven Municipality?

I am particularly happy with my current position as a Strategic Housing Advisor within the Municipality. I can contribute a lot to the future of our city, especially because housing is now an important theme. This is and remains my ambition; working in a position within the Municipality where I can be of significance. I think it would be really great to be able to tell my children, when they are grown up, about what I have done in my work and to be able to cycle around with them through areas in which I have been involved!
