#WishIWasHere Carefully selecting and curating a range of beautiful books for beautiful people and bringing them together under the name MARKED may not be an easy task, but it is the one we’ve taken on.

The challenge we face is evaluating and deciding what is beautiful and what is not when there is no such thing as a universal taste.

De gustibus et coloribus non disputandum est. So, too, starts Tom Schamp’s new book ‘The most beautiful book of all colours’, a gem that should be in every nursery. That there’s no arguing about colours is refuted loud and clear by Patrick Kooiman in ‘Volume’.

‘Stoned’ then takes us on a different ‘trip’, one that shows us marble and natural stone incorporated into interiors and architecture by some of the biggest names in the design world. Artists on the rocks, shaken, not stirred.

Colour is also the bohemian-chic leitmotif in ‘Life is Ibiza’ and in the bright world of top designer Dries Van Noten. A stark contrast to the deconstruction reigning in the world of Martin Margiela, who again steals the show in Paris with two exhibitions. Metropolises look very different through Jasper Léonard’s lens in ‘Resized’, scale models that seem frozen in time. The international press waxes lyrical about his books. Coming up next in this series are New York and Amsterdam, as well as a children’s book. Turkish photographer Aydin Büyüktas takes us on a pictorial roller coaster in ‘Flatland’: images that will bend your mind.

However, we see ourselves gradually withdrawing from the hustle and bustle. Looking for detachment and for connectedness with nature, as in ‘Wild Land’, which takes us to the last rough places on Earth. Abandoned is also what you could call the desolate universe of the Mothmeister artist duo. Their faces covered with masks, they spin ‘Weird and Wonderful Post-Mortem Fairy Tales’ that take you on an alienating, mystical trip. This bridges the distance to the frozen-in-time, natural beauty of taxidermy. As artful as ambitious, the Darwin, Sinke en Van Tongeren duo, picked up by Damien Hirst, publishes their ‘First Book’ this spring.

Are we as human beings indebted to Nature? We certainly owe it something, if not everything. The insignificance you experience when you brave the forces of the ocean, bobbing on the swell, waiting for that one wave or ‘High Tide’, is overwhelming. ‘Surf & Stay’ is the motto, viewing life through pink-green-blue glasses.

JUNGLE OF LOVE BALTIMORE – Hilton Carter

In the greener part of the city of Baltimore, near the Hampden district along the banks of the Jones Falls River, an old cotton factory from 1870 was transformed into a luxury apartment complex. Today, it is more commonly known as Cotton Mill N°1.

Hilton Carter, filmmaker, producer, and an interior decorator and plant specialist in his own right, found his dream loft there.

“You feel almost as if you are in the countryside, when you are actually living right in the heart of the city. That makes this place a unique location.”, Hilton says.

Though it may look like a jungle, he did not place any of these plants at random. “I see a plant in the house as a design element,” Hilton continues, “and especially with bigger specimens, you can set the tone and make a room even more warm and inviting.

Where does your passion for taxidermy come from?

Even though taxidermy is still very controversial we believe it’s a respectful art, giving dead animals a second life, we’ve been collecting them for more than 25 years now. We take it a little step further and treat them as fairy-tale-like characters by dressing them up and creating this surreal post-mortem fairy tale like universe. For us, it’s a homage. With a little twist that is.

And where does the fascination for the masks finds its origin?

Since childhood, we’ve both been fascinated by myths, legends, and fairy tales where animals possess human characteristics.

We’re intrigued by masks used in ancient rituals, religious cult celebrations, pest-control protection and carnivals. The transformation into our alter ego Mothmeister naturally grew through the years simultaneously with our exploding collection of taxidermy, masks and costumes.

Where do you get your inspiration?

Our unconsciousness is like a bubbling volcano, pouring vivid dreams and nightmares all over our brain. We are also influenced by some intriguing artists like Cindy Sherman, the exuberant and grotesque characters of Paul McCarthy and the wonderful and weird dioramas of Walter Potter, a 19th-century taxidermist, showcasing stuffed and dressed animals as if they were fairy tale characters.

What’s your story? How did you end up in Ibiza?

After a close friend of mine bought a small house in the countryside, I went to visit him for a week.

I’d known Ibiza mostly for its nightlife, but during that week I fell in love twice. First with the friend, and then with the island.

What is it about the island that attracts you most?

The freedom, and a sense of peacefulness, not always apparent in summer. It’s also important for me to be in touch with nature and experience the changes of rhythm that are so typical here.

Personally I find it easier to really be myself here than anywhere else. There is a unbeatable quality of acceptance to the island, and I have the feeling it encourages and sometimes even pushes you to find your own way. That in combination with a lot of likeminded, non-judgemental people living here makes it the perfect place.
