Since 1955 the World Press Photo Awards are a reference in the field of documentary and press photography, the Oscars for photo journalism. This year marks the beginning of a new region-based jury system and therefor the lay-out and structure of the yearbook has been updated as well.

The World Press Photo Foundation is a global platform connecting professionals and nonprofessionals through trustworthy visual journalism and storytelling. Founded in 1955 when a group of Dutch photographers organised a contest ('World Press Photo') to show their work to an international audience. In the six decades since then, the contest has grown into the world's most prestigious photography competition.
