Art of Alchemy

Richly illustrated with unique images and engravings

An intriguing subject to the present day
Alchemists didn’t just want to make gold, their ultimate goal was to subject nature to human imagination. For scientists, philosophers and artists alchemy seemed to be the key to the discovery of the creation of the world.

In this handbook full of stunning engravings and artistic images, David Brafman, curator of rare books at the Getty Research Institute, talks about how alchemy was the most important human invention after the fire and how it had a worldwide influence on science and art.

“AMONG ALL THE ARTS, IT IS THE ART OF ALCHEMY WHICH MOST CLOSELY IMITATES NATURE.”Alchemists
are notorious for attempting to synthesize gold. Their goals, however, were far more ambitious: to transform and bend nature to the will of an industrious human imagination. For scientists, philosophers, and artists alike, alchemy seemed to hold the key to unlocking the secrets of creation. Alchemists’ efforts to discover the way the world is made have had an enduring impact on global artistic practice and expression. This book is the first to explore how the art of alchemy globally transformed human creative culture from antiquity to the industrial age, and displays the ways its legacy still permeates the world we make today.

Flora Batava 1800-1934
The Wild Plants of the Netherlands
Esther van Gelder, Norbert Peeters
Monumental inventory of more than 2630 life-like painted trees, bushes, herbs, ferns, mosses, mushrooms and algae
With 100 stories by contemporary scientists about an equal amount of specifically picked, iconic plant species
New facsimile in the successful series of Atlas De Wit, Maria Sibylla Merian and Nederlandsche Vogelen
When publisher Jan Christiaan Sepp started an illustrated overview of all Dutch plants in 1800, he could never have suspected that the last part would only be published in 1934. Eventually the Flora Batava consisted of 461 instalments spread out over 28 books: a giant’s labour to which an extensive circle of amateur botanists, senior lecturers and artists contributed. This resulted in the up to then most complete inventory of indigenous flora of the country. An anthology that on top of that beautifully illustrates the large changes to the Dutch landscape, the science and the appreciation for national nature.

This one-volume republication contains a collection of all 2240 engravings which encompass more than 2630 plants, mushrooms, lichens, and algae painted from life. Another 100 iconic species were specially selected from the collection. They come accompanied by their original text and feature a story written by a new network of plant connoisseurs and admirers. Along with the extensive introduction and the index of species this new Flora Batava offers a colorful image of the Dutch plant world and the wonders it contains.

Planktonium An Unseen World
Jan van IJkenA book that makes the invisible life in the water around us visible

The amazing images are accompanied by brief, informative texts about the portrayed species and source
A rare insight into the threatened life form that is the basis of the food chain
Planktonium by artist Jan van IJken reveals the invisible world of the microscopically small plankton. These surprisingly beautiful, very diverse and numerous organisms remain largely unknown to most of us because they are invisible to the naked eye.

Van IJken photographed the plankton through his microscopes and reveals the beauty and delicate structures of the tiny organisms in the greatest detail. They may be small but these organisms are of vital importance for the continued existence of our planet: they account for half of the oxygen production on earth, form the basis of the food chain and play an important role in the worldwide carbon cycle. With this book Jan van IJken shows plankton, threatened by global warming and ocean acidification, in its most pure and art-like form.
Jan van IJken is a movie producer and photographer in Leiden who focusses on the interface between art and science. His work is about the secrets of nature, microscopy, embryology and human-animal relations. He works, mainly autonomously, on long-term projects. As a photographer he developed a strong sense for natural light, composition and detail.

The 10 Lessons for Life of a Hiker
Dorien Draps
Dorien Draps is the figurehead of a new generation of hiking enthusiasts
Invigorating edition with stunning illustrations
With tasks, questions for reflection and meditative exercises for on the road
Dorien Draps is not the textbook example of a seasoned hiker. She is a young, female copywriter, and on top of that she lives in the city. Yet she lost her heart to hiking and the whole philosophy of life that comes with it. Because outside is better than inside.
In this book, she brings her ode to walking, averse to the well-trodden paths. A combination of philosophical stories, scientific insights and personal anecdotes that are both compelling and entertaining. At the centre are the ten greatest life lessons that walking can teach you, from rediscovering your wild instincts to learning to look back at nature or a crash course in praying with your feet. Each time complemented with concrete tips, beautiful illustrations and exercises to get into the walking flow. For both experienced hikers and enthusiasts who have only just (re)discovered hiking.
Dorien Draps discovered the power of hiking and being in nature a few years ago. She wanted to share those benefits with everyone, so she founded blog and podcast Op Wandel, which won her the Blog Award in 2022. In the meantime, Op Wandel grew into a professional platform with courses to get out and about well-prepared, safely and independently.
