Building Dedication for Iowa Engineering On April 26 we welcomed nearly 350 of our faculty, staff, alumni, and friends to dedicate the new Seamans Center South Annex. We celebrated the architects’ amazing job of designing a state-of-the-art addition that recognizes who we are and how we go about our work of educating students and creating new knowledge.

For example, the addition is filled with windows and sky-lights for energizing daylight, has ample space for spontaneous collaborative learning with tables, chairs, and technology distributed through-out. The architects — BNIM — worked closely with our faculty and staff to learn what we need to achieve even more, and the results included a beautiful fluids lab that includes a wind tunnel, a towing tank, state-of-the-art visualization capabilities, and more. The addition has modern classrooms which seamlessly support active learning, collaborative learning, or traditional lectures.

We have a design studio that encourages our students to explore and develop their creative skills. There are numerous new state-of-theart research labs to support our thriving research enterprise. In short, this new addition makes us better — it enhances everything that we do.

But we celebrated much more than the new, state-of-the-art space. What we really celebrated was the incredible team of faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends whose efforts, accomplishments, passion, and generosity have helped to justify, inspire, and make the addition possible. I am amazed and inspired by the way that our engineering faculty has risen to the challenge of continuously enhancing and expanding the scope and impact of their research activities while simultaneously innovating their educational programs in an environment of growing enrollment. Another critical aspect of our successful team is the alumni and friends who share our passion for excellence and our vision for how to help create a better world. I have had the pleasure of meeting our alumni all over the country, and the world, and I am inspired by their wisdom, energy, enthusiasm, and support. Together, we are an unstoppable team which is destined to shape a better future.

That is what we celebrated on April 26.

Annex Expands Home for University of Iowa Engineering “A library is more than a brick and mortar building filled with delicious books. It is also a community of people who live to invest in our youth, who read for knowledge and fun, and who are ready to include anyone who walks through the door.”

That quote, with a few modifications, might also describe the new Annex to the College of Engineering’s Seamans Center for the Engineering Arts and Sciences.

Alec Scranton, dean of the College of Engineering, says the Annex provides new educational opportunities for students, faculty, and staff and helps the college prepare its graduates for a global job market.

“In the College of Engineering, we are proud of our cuttingedge educational programs, which prepare our students for success in today’s ever-changing, competitive environment,” Scranton says. “Our graduates combine a rigorous technical education with important skills in the areas of leadership, global awareness, teamwork, communications, entrepreneurship, and creativity. The world needs our brand of engineers more than ever; therefore, this expansion allows us to increase our enrollment while ensuring that the UI College of Engineering remains the best-possible learning environment for our 21st-century students.”

A glance at the numbers — the new $37.1-million, 65,000-square-foot Annex includes a 5,000-square-foot design studio, a 4,000-square-foot space for student collaboration and 5,000 square feet of green roofing —indicates that students will have more opportunities for collaborative learning. And a brief tour of some Annex highlights reveals how these educational opportunities work.

State-of-the-Art Classrooms Address Growing Enrollment The Annex to the UI Seamans Center for the Engineering Arts and Sciences helps answer a need for more space — college enrollment doubled between 2001 and 2018 — with two new classrooms having a combined capacity of 224 students.

But the two classrooms provide more than just increased seating space. The larger of the two includes: • Hearing loop systems, designed to connect with student hearing aids and/or provided audio headsets.

• Tiered seating with two rows of desks per tier, so that one row can be turned around for collaborative learning.

• Power for student laptops and additional laptops available for loan.

In addition to hearing loops and laptop power, the classroom contains glass boards — the modern version of white boards.

Associate Professor of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Albert Ratner, who teaches a thermodynamics class, says the new classrooms have multiple advantages.

“The classrooms add two large-capacity rooms so that we can more effectively teach our increased enrollment,” he says.

“The classrooms allow us to display multiple things at once and interact with the students both in person and through electronic polling/quizzing tools. This enables a more dynamic teaching and learning environment than traditional classrooms.”

He adds, “I think the classrooms are a great help and will significantly enhance student learning and participation. I expect more and more classes to be retooled to use all of the new features and for more students to benefit as that happens.”

Water Quality and Energy Efficiency are Built Into Annex Visitors to the Annex will find a variety of sustainable and environmentally efficient practices at work inside and outside the building. Senior Construction Manager Brian Keating of UI Facilities Management Design and Construction says that components of the rainwater biocells, a water absorption and filtration system, are perhaps the most visible features.

As visitors stand beneath the Annex and look west toward Madison Street, they see a beautiful, graceful walkway — flanked by grasses and other vegetation — leading down the hill.

“They look like two large planting beds, but they’re actually part of the biocells,” says Keating. The upper biocell receives rainwater runoff from the green roof of the Annex and from permeable pavers on the building’s east side. The green roof, which can be viewed from inside the building, is composed of a shade and sun sedum ground cover mix of approximately 40 different plant varieties, which absorb water and provide natural cooling.

“The upper biocell is planted with grasses and other native Iowa vegetation which cleans the water a second time and cools it further,” says biocell co-designer Tracy Longo. Longo and co-designer Ted Schmidt are UI engineering alumni and civil engineers at Shive-Hattery Architecture and Engineering in Iowa City, a sub-consultant on the Annex project. “The lower biocell is an overflow for the upper biocell and collects and treats rainwater from the conventional portion of the Annex roof,” she says.

Any water unabsorbed by the green roof or the biocells is then filtered by several layers of rock before gravity directs it to an underground water quality tank. The underground tank contains several baffles to allow sediment and oils to separate out of the water before it is allowed to flow downhill to storm sewers and ultimately to the Iowa River.

Other Annex environmental features include: • A daylight harvesting system that automatically adjusts lights to maintain a desired light level.

• An energy usage meter and 234 solar panels that provide between 10 and 20 percent of the building’s energy needs.

Engineering Design Studio Is Centerpiece of the Annex In 2016 construction workers drilling beneath the site of the Annex of the Seamans Center for the Engineering Arts and Sciences found something unexpected — coral fossils from the Devonian period of 385 million years ago when Iowa was a warm, shallow sea.

Similarly, visitors to the Annex may be surprised to find that the building highlights the College of Engineering’s innovative collaboration with UI arts programs in the form of its state-ofthe-art Engineering Design Studio. It’s a room where students work on multi-disciplinary projects during their first semester on campus and complete their Senior Design Projects during their last two semesters. But it’s so much more.

The studio’s glass ceiling and two-level, floor-to-ceiling glass walls allow visitors to watch from above or as they walk past, while students work on their projects from beginning to end. Completed projects can be displayed by suspending them from the ceiling.

Engineering Dean Alec Scranton calls the Engineering Design Studio — which resides in the lobby area and connects the Seamans Center to the Annex — the centerpiece of the Annex.

John Mirth, Professor of Instruction in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, views the Engineering Design Studio as a great place in which to teach and learn.

“We have been fortunate enough to have several guest experts come to offer workshops to our Senior Design students this semester,” says Sarah Vigmostad, Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering. “We use this space (Engineering Design Studio) for those workshops because of its versatility and flexibility in its seating and work areas.”

In summary, the jewel-like Engineering Design Studio is a surprising, yet unforgettable, addition to the UI College of Engineering.

By the way, anyone wishing to see samples of the Devonian fossils can do so by visiting the College’s Admissions Office, where a sample is on display.

In addition, UI Collections Management Specialist Tiffany Adrain selected fossils from the Annex site and added them to the UI Paleontology Repository’s permanent collection of over one million fossils held in trust for the state of Iowa.

New Fluids Workshop Builds Hydraulics Expertise — And a Boat The first thing to know about the Fluids Workshop in the new Annex to the Seamans Center for the Engineering Arts and Sciences is that it is one part of a suite of three contiguous labs: the Fluids Workshop, the Fluids Fundamentals Lab and the Advanced Measurements Lab. Secondly, the Fluids Workshop is designed to work in concert with the decades-old historic Fluids Laboratory located within the UI’s IIHR--Hydroscience & Engineering, one of the world’s oldest and most preeminent hydraulic research and teaching laboratories.

James Buchholz, Associate Professor of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and IIHR Associate Faculty Research Engineer, says that the three laboratories work together to accomplish core teaching and research. Within the walls of the Fluids Fundamentals Lab, students are formally taught fundamental concepts from course lab manuals. In the Fluids Workshop, students work on projects that interest them, including capstone design projects, research with faculty, testing of designs for student organization projects, and other openended or creative endeavors.

The Advanced Measurements Lab supports the other two labs with specialized equipment including a wind tunnel, a water channel, a towing tank and an open channel flume. Buchholz gratefully acknowledges that much of the instrumentation and equipment in the laboratories was purchased with the help of a $1 million grant from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust. With the myriad of activities taking place in the lab, the college has hired Laboratory Engineer Brian Snider to help keep the lab safe and running smoothly.

The Fluids Workshop is also the new home of the Iowa Marine Autonomous Racing Club (IMARC) where students will build a robotic boat that will compete nationally.

“The competition is crafted to develop in students the skills needed to work in industry,” Buchholz says. He adds that working with IMARC will enable students to leverage the powerful instruments, facilities, and computational tools in the lab and perform at a high level.

“We are establishing a learning community that will exist indefinitely, outside of the confines of any single semester or course,” he says.

Student Development Center Encourages Student Success In a way, the act of moving the UI College of Engineering Student Development Center into new, larger third floor suite of offices in the Annex changes nothing — and changes everything — all at the same time.

Just as before, the Center’s staff of six professionals, in collaboration with college faculty and a team of student peer advisors, provide essential services that promote College of Engineering student success.

These include: • Engineering Registrar Megan Allen ensures all classes, including transfer and study abroad credit, keep students on track for graduation.

• Director of Academic Advising and Retention Nancy Schneider promotes leadership development and strategies for academic success.

• Director of Tutoring and Academic Advisor Josh Atcher coordinates academic support efforts and advises students in the engineering honors program.

• Director of Global Experiences and Academic Advisor Anat Levtov supports international students and enhances study abroad programs.

• Coordinator of Administrative Services Laura Vasser helps answer student questions and guides students to their available resources.

Director of Professional Development Kelli Delfosse, who oversees career development, employer relations, the national Engineering Grand Challenges Scholars Program and a host of other activities, says of her colleagues: “The Student Development Center is a one-stop student services shop for engineering students. Featuring first-year advising, engineering honors, tutoring, student records, global engineering, and career and professional development, the office provides a full range of services and resources to support undergraduate engineering students from orientation through graduation.

“While each staff member has their own areas of responsibility, their first and primary responsibility is student advising,” says Delfosse. “Also, peer advisors, who have been in the students’ shoes, staff walk-in hours throughout the day to assist students with a variety of questions,” So, what’s new? The answer — location, location, location — is familiar to real estate professionals, and it changes everything.

“Though the department itself is not new,” says Delfosse, “the new location in the Annex allows for expanded tutoring services, industry presentations, and other student services programming. Relocating the Student Development Center to the Annex shows current and prospective students and parents that the college is committed to student success.”

New Annex Embraces Art Since fall 2015, all entering first-year College of Engineering undergraduate students have been required to take at least three semester hours of arts courses ranging from painting to dance and theater.

And for several years the College has offered students participation in The Virginia A. Myers Nexus of Engineering and the Arts, a program directed by Deanne Wortman, who also serves as Adjunct Assistant Professor in Printmaking-Foil Imaging in the UI School of Art and Art History.

Also, the state-mandated Art in State Buildings Program requires that one-half of one percent of the project total cost must be spent on fine arts.

So it should come as no surprise that the Annex to the Seamans Center for the Engineering Arts and Sciences features works of art.

First, a centerpiece sculpture — titled Convergence and consisting of various engineering equations cut out of seven multicolored, metal ribbons — hangs from the hallway ceiling adjacent to the first floor wind tunnel. Artist Joe O’Connell says in a note to viewers (Joe O’Connell and Creative Machines) that he worked directly with the UI to collect equations that were significant to its student body.

“Convergence is an artwork exploring the language of engineering meant specifically to engage the minds of its pupils,” O’Connell says.

A second example of Annex artwork can be seen by visitors walking down the second-floor and third-floor hallways, where photographic murals rise from floor to ceiling. Photographer Ching-Long Lin, Professor and Departmental Executive Officer of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and Research Engineer at IIHR-Hydroscience & Engineering, captured the ribbon-like images of waves on the Iowa River in July 2014 near the Iowa River Power Company Restaurant.

Finally, the building itself is a work of art. Partially elevated above ground level, it offers views of the Iowa River and the campus beyond. Flows Through the Annex A

n American bald eagle — its talons clutching a fish — spreads its powerful wings and skims over the waves on the Mississippi River.

—An orange support tower of the Golden Gate Bridge rises above San Francisco and the bay.

—A flock of birds soars into a blue-andwhite-striped afternoon sky.

Those images and more appear on the Facebook page of the same photographer whose untitled murals grace the halls on the second and third floors of the new Annex to the UI College of Engineering.

The photographer, Ching-Long Lin, Edward M. Mielnik and Samuel R. Harding Professor and Departmental Executive Officer of Mechanical Engineering as well as Research Engineer at IIHR—Hydroscience & Engineering, says the photo used in the murals resulted from a visit to the Iowa River in Coralville.

“The photo is the Iowa River taken in July 2014 across the bridge by the Iowa River Power Restaurant,” he says. “There was a flood then and the river water ran very fast. I took several photos of long exposure. They had very beautiful silky colors. I posted one of them on my Facebook page.”

It wasn’t long before a writer at IIHR saw the photo and asked permission to use it in an IIHR publication. Later, a College of Engineering faculty member asked permission to print the photo and hang the copy in her office. Finally, a College of Engineering staff member in the Dean’s office asked whether it could be displayed as a mural in the new Annex. Lin gave permission, and today the blue-and-white image of water in motion greets the eye of visitors to the Annex.

Lin’s decision to take the photo in the first place may have less to do with high water levels in 2014 than with his lifelong fascination with flowing air and water.

“As a kid, I loved to build model airplanes. I still remember the scene when I spent my allowance on a piece of light wood for a model airplane, and the joy on my way home from the store when riding an adult bike with one hand and carrying that piece of wood with the other hand, experiencing the lift on my hand and enjoying the breeze flowing around me.”

Lin says.

His interest in air and water have led to a research career resulting in more than 200 professional publications in scientific journals, conference proceedings and abstracts on a variety of subjects.

His work includes National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded studies of the computer-simulated flow of air in the human lungs as well as studies of simulated flows in the atmospheric boundary layer, microfluidic systems and spillways.

In the case of the NIH studies, Lin notes that the ultimate goal is to develop a multiscale subject-specific computational fluid dynamics model for pulmonary air flow that uses a computed tomography (CT) data-driven approach.

The model would be applied to healthy, asthmatic and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) populations toward achieving more personalized medicine.

His recent publications in the prestigious Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences highlight his contributions to this field.

While photography may seem to be a natural activity for a researcher of air and water flow, it wasn’t always so for Lin.

“I seriously got into photography in November 2011 when my wife, Marlee, bought me a Nikon 7000 camera during a holiday season. She said that besides work it is important for me to have a hobby,” Lin says.

Since then, his needs have grown to keep pace with his interests. Today his photo images benefit from equipment favored by many professional and serious amateur wildlife and landscape photographers. Just for the record, here is his short list of gear: “Currently I use a Nikon D850 and Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.5 sport lens for photographing birds. I also have Nikon 14-24mm, 24-70mm and 70-200mm lenses (the so-called Nikon trinity lens system) for photographing landscapes, the Milky Way, portraits and action shots,” he says.

As important as it is, equipment takes a back seat to Lin’s choice of subject matter.

“I love eagle photography,” he says. “Iowa is one of a few places in the United States where it’s possible to take close up shots of eagles in action. American bald eagles migrate south during the winter between late December and mid-February.

“Most river surfaces are frozen then, except for open water near locks and dams along the mighty Mississippi River.

Eagles tend to gather near locks and dams where they can fish on open water. Lock and Dam Number 14 near LeClaire, Iowa is very famous for eagle photography because the lighting and water colors in the afternoon are so beautiful, and eagles tend to fish very close, allowing close-up shots. It attracts photographers from all over, including Canada, Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan.”

Lin notes that the colder the weather, the more active the eagles. That’s because in cold weather eagles need to keep feed-

ing, and also because open water is limited to a small area where eagles are able to fish. As a result, photographers are better able to predict the birds’ activities and get nice shots. “Eagles in flight are so majestic,” he says.

In addition to his love of photographing eagles, Lin has a variety of other photo subjects that interest him.

“Every March I also like to take photos of great horned owls in Lone Tree, Iowa. Every year, the same owl parents return to the same tree, lay eggs and have owlets,” he says.

“I also love to take photos of the Milky Way in the summer and several different events, including rodeo, cycling races and parades, as anyone can see see by visiting my Flickr and Facebook sites,” he says.

Although Lin hasn’t exhibited his photographs at shows, he enjoys taking photos for his departmental newsletter and occasionally one of his photos will appear in a local publication, such as the great horned owls that grace the page of the July 27, 2017 issue of The Kalona News (http://www.kalonanews.com/ lone_tree/not-all-lone-tree-neighbors-arehuman/article_05a5087c-7207-11e7-bdbcb7bb5edfe815.html).

Above all, Lin enjoys maintaining a year-round display for visitors to his UI engineering offices. “My office is an exhibit hall of my photos,” he says.

What’s more, the exhibit is a record of how successful his wife has been in finding him a hobby.

“Photography gets me out of the academic bubble, allowing me to appreciate the beauty around me and in nature and become acquainted with several friends in different professions,” Lin says.

From the Center for Advancement After an extended winter season, spring has finally arrived at the University of Iowa College of Engineering! As a new face to the college’s development team, I have enjoyed getting to know many of our alumni and friends. Everyone’s passion for this great university and the College of Engineering was clear to me within first few interactions I had with Hawkeye Engineers. I’ve heard stories about faculty providing guidance and encouragement, how Engineering at Iowa prepared alumni for their careers, and why people continue to give their time, talent, and treasure back to the college.

Recently, the College of Engineering’s Annex Dedication drew many alumni back to campus. The college proudly hosted nearly 350 alumni, students, friends, faculty, and staff at the ceremony held Thursday, April 26th. The new addition features state-of-the-art spaces including a design studio, a fluids laboratory, and several collaborative team areas for undergraduate and graduate student use.

The extra 65,000 square feet answers a need for more space and facilities as the College of Engineering experiences significant growth in enrollment and research.
