Engineering students at Iowa are encouraged to enhance their education through second degrees, minors, certificates, study abroad, research with professors, athletics, engagement with the arts, volunteering, student organizations, and leadership experiences.

Biomedical Engineering Biomedical engineers work to improve human health through the analysis and design of medical devices, processes, and systems, by the discovery of new knowledge. Graduates of the program can pursue a wide range of career opportunities, such as an engineer in industry,

CHOOSE YOUR PATH The engineering curriculum at Iowa begins with two semesters in common. This helps students build a solid engineering foundation, connect with peers, and develop mentoring relationships with their faculty members. Students then use the remaining 6 semesters to delve into major-specific courses,

as a researcher in a government or academic laboratory, or as a physician or other healthcare professional.

Chemical Engineering Chemical and biochemical engineers combine engineering principles with knowledge of mathematics and specific sciences—particularly chemistry and the biological sciences—to develop and operate processes that convert raw materials into products that benefit society and into energy that fuels the world. Chemical engineering harnesses chemical reactions and physical/chemical processes to sustainably improve quality of life and well-being on our planet.

Civil Engineering Civil engineers create safe, smart, and sustainable infrastructure while protecting the natural environment. Students gain a broad background in areas of environmental, structural, transportation, and water resources engineering while they work on multifaceted real-world projects.

Computer Science and Engineering This program combines a computer science degree and a computer engineering degree in one four-year program. The program provides students training and understanding of computer software and hardware along with the engineering analysis, design, and multidisciplinary teamwork skills needed to develop large and complex systems containing both software and hardware components.

Electrical Engineering The electrical engineering program provides students training and understanding of hardware and software, ranging from device physics to medical imaging, electronics, embedded systems, communication, and control-systems engineering. Students may opt to specialize in one of 24 focus areas.

Environmental Engineering Environmental engineers design systems that support the well-being of people and the planet.

They improve countless lives by providing a clean and safe water supply; treating pollution in air, water, and soil; and developing sustainable solutions for future generations.

Industrial and Systems Engineering Industrial and systems engineers use advanced mathematics and statistics, psychology, and systems theory to make processes, machines, healthcare, and organizations operate more efficiently. They are frequently key players in planning and implementing large-scale changes.

Mechanical Engineering Mechanical engineers are involved in the design, analysis, manufacture, and testing of devices and machines that are essential to modern society. A broad education in mechanical and thermal science and advanced mathematics gives mechanical engineers the expertise to contribute to a wide range of industries and technologies.

The Corn Monument, an annual University of Iowa tradition dating back to 1919, is built by the UI chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Hawkeyes from around the country gather during Homecoming to celebrate their time as students and appreciate the work that current undergraduates put into the monument.
