MAKING WAY FOR THE NEXT GENERATION Our interactive, hands-on approach is designed to inspire appreciation and spark an interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Students learn from faculty, staff, and students across the University of Iowa. We support student success in STEM and health literacy through medical simulations, career exploration, and explanations of basic STEM principles.

Our programs give students the opportunity to connect the classroom to real-world situations.

Students who live in rural counties may have limited exposure to health care careers, so our goal is to create those opportunities for them.

STATEWIDE IMPACT “As Iowa’s only academic medical center, UI Health Care STEM Education strives to provide educational opportunities to K-12 students across the state. There are barriers that make it challenging to reach students including time and cost for transportation. We are always exploring ways to reach students with barriers to program access. In FY20, we utilized our medical students completing clinical clerkships around Iowa and medicine alumni in Iowa to serve students in communities across the state. Additionally, as we pivoted programming due to COVID-19, our virtual programs, activity videos, and online resources became accessible to students everywhere. We are eager to serve more students across Iowa next fiscal year as we continue to grow our virtual program experiences.”

CHALLENGES IN STEM As more careers in STEM are left vacant and student interest in STEM gradually decreases, it becomes more important to create programs that showcase the versatility of careers in STEM and health care. UI Health Care STEM Education provides a wide variety of STEM experiences to enhance the way students perceive a career in STEM. Instead of just reading about it in a textbook, our visits allow students to be faceto-face with professionals in their field and get handson experience in real-world scenarios. Creating these early opportunities can instill excitement for STEM and make it possible for students to imagine themselves in a STEM career.

FOCUSING ON

THEIR FUTURE WOMEN IN STEM “Women continue to be underrepresented in the physician and scientific research workforce despite near parity in entering and graduating students. Even though 50% of graduate students enrolled in STEM programs are women, less than 25% of STEM faculty members are women. Women have made up slightly less than 50% of medical student graduates since 2004 but make up only 35% of the physician workforce ... This data suggests that there are climate factors at play pushing women out of medical and scientific careers.”

GIRLS GO STEM Since 2012, UI Health Care STEM Education has hosted Girls Go STEM to facilitate exposure to STEM in sixth grade to eighth grade girls.

Attendees learn about STEM and careers in health care from faculty, staff, and trainees in several different units or departments across the university. The goal of this program is to empower girls to be leaders in STEM through women-led sessions, lessons on adolescent women’s health topics, and an encouraging learning environment.

FOR EVERYONE One of the most important goals for UI Health Care STEM Education is to ensure that all students feel represented and welcome when they participate in our programs. We want students to be able to picture themselves in the careers they learn about and know there is a place for them in any field. We work with a variety of faculty, staff, and trainees who bring diverse perspectives and connect with students on many levels. Teams function best with a diversity of experiences and viewpoints, so our aim is to inspire students from all backgrounds to pursue a future career in STEM and health care.

Of rural students said their interest in STEM increased

Access to health care in rural Iowa is declining at an alarming rate. Over the past 40 years, the percentage of all physicians who practice in rural communities has continued to drop, leaving only 23% of the physician workforce in rural areas in 2018. UI Health Care STEM Education makes it a priority to reach rural students with the intent to spark their interest in STEM so they consider pursuing a health care career and returning to their hometown to practice. Hawkeye Hometown visits, reaching 1,029 students

To increase engagement with rural Iowa students, current UI Carver College of Medicine students through our Carver College of Medicine Hawkeye Hometown Visit program, connect with their hometown schools to provide a STEM education experience. By visiting the school either in person or virtually, college students provide interactive and engaging programming to the young students, who might otherwise not have the chance to experience our programs in the UI campus.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, UI Health Care STEM Education took a new approach to engaging students with virtual education opportunities and online experiences. Even through a computer screen, it’s clear that students are still eager to learn about STEM.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and shut down schools, we knew students were missing out on hands-on experiential learning like field trips and lab experiences. To address this immediate crisis, we quickly created virtual resources and activities including a webpage with experiments, health and wellness tips, activity sheets, and videos for accessing and completing at home. Faculty, staff, and students rose to the challenge to create videos and activities while being socially distant and using common household items.

The online resources have proven to be valuable tool and will continue to be used to reach more students.

UI Health Care STEM Education programs seek to build the pipeline of talented students to matriculate at The University of Iowa in STEM or health science programs by seeking the best and the brightest students with diverse backgrounds and experiences.

We target students who are designated as talented and gifted (TAG) or are taking Advanced Placement classes. We identify populations of Iowa students that may get overlooked because of location, socioeconomic status, gender, or race and seek to connect and engage them in STEM programming.*

BUILDING THE PIPELINE KIDS GO STEM Expanding on the very popular and wildly successful Girls Go STEM program, Kids Go STEM was born to reach any middle school student with an interest in STEM. While 6-8th grade students spent a Saturday morning participating in hands-on interactive sessions with a variety of STEM and health science professionals from the UI, their parents/adults engaged in topics and conversation in STEM, teen development, and pre-college curriculum.

UI OFFICE OF ADMISSIONS UI Health Care STEM Education partners with the UI Office of Admissions for many programs throughout the year, including Hawkeye Visit Days, Junior Hawkeye Visits Days, Medicine at Iowa, and Health Sciences Visit Days.

Working with UI Admissions allows us to engage more high school students who are potentially closer to choosing a career in STEM or health care. Our involvement lets them discover the vast opportunities with UI Health Care and the university’s health sciences campus.
