AndreasVasdekiswasawardedtheMalcolm andCarolRenfrewFacultyFellowshipfor hisworkoncellmetabolicprocesses,using quantitativephaseimaging,light-sheetmicroscopy,machinelearning(forimageprocessing),andmicrofluidics(forcellmanipulation).ThispastsummerProfessorVasdekis’labwasvisitedbytwointernsfrom ClarkstonHighSchoolwhostayedonour campusforaweekdoingresearchinthe lab;thiswasincollaborationwithSTEM ACCESSatUI.ProfessorVasdekisalsodid somecalibrationworkinthecleanroom, whichwasmovedfromtheMinesbuilding toEPin2019.

TheDepartmenthaditsownawardsceremony,atourfirstpost-pandemicAwards Banquet.RabindraKhanalreceivedthe BestTAaward.StevenKreyche’sawardfor GraduateResearchwasannouncedbuthe wasnotabletoattend,beingalreadyemployedwithAerospaceCorporationinColoradoSpringstoanalyzeorbitalmechanicsforthemilitary.Steve’sthesisadvisor, JasonBarnes,acceptedforhim.SamanthaCalloswalkedawaywithalltheother awards,thoughnotliterallybecauseshewas interviewingforthePhysicsgraduateprogramattheUniversityofOregon(herfall destination).MattHedmanacceptedfor hertheUndergraduateResearchAward,the GeorgeandDellaLukeawardforhighest graduatinggpa,andtheOutstandingGraduatingPhysicsSeniorAward.

Lastbutnotleastwewerevisitedby RebeccaBishop(BS‘96)whogaveatalk aboutspaceweather,onherwaytoreceivingherSilverandGoldAlumniAwardat areceptionthattookplaceattheUniversityInn.Dr.BishopisaPrincipalScientistintheSpaceScienceandApplications LaboratoryatTheAerospaceCorporation withexpertiseinunderstandingthenearEarthspaceenvironment,specificallythe ionosphere(90-2000km),anditsimpacton space/groundassetsandinthedevelopment ofspace-weatherinstrumentation.Herresearchareasincludeionosphericdynamics, ionospherecouplingtohurricanes/typhoons, andtheionosphere/thermosphereinteractions.

TheCollegehadasecondawardsreception,followingthespringcommencement ceremony.ThistimeSamCalloswasin townandreceivedherDean’sUndergraduateAwardinperson.SteveKreycheas unabletoattend,buthisDean’sGraduate Awardwasannounced.

Finally,althoughlastyearwastheone filledwithmoose,itwasthisyearthatone wascapturedon‘film,’whiledrivinghome fromcampusonasnowyday.Thisyearis,of course,theyearoftherabbit,eventhough itwaslastyear’snewsletterthathadthe rabbitphoto;hereheisagaininatrailcam photo,confrontingawildguywhotunneled intoourrabbitcompound.

Lastsummer,theUniversityofIdaho proudlyhostedthe2022NorthAmerican EinsteinToolkitWorkshop,whichbrought togetherresearchersandstudentstoexplore thelatestadvancementsinrelativisticastrophysicsandgravitationalphysics.The Workshop,opentobothin-personandvirtualattendees,featuredanengagingmixof talksandtutorialstailoredtoaccommodate usersofallexperiencelevels.

Forfallof2022,SPSparticipatedinthe grandopeningstarpartyforthenewobservatorytelescope,wherewewereabletoobservethemoon,Jupiter,Saturn,andsome starclusters!SPSalsovisitedLIGOin HanfordWashington.LIGOdetectedthe firstevidenceofgravitationalwavesrippling throughspacein2015,whichwontheteam runningtheobservatoryaNobelprizein physics!Whilewewerethere,weweregiven atourofthefacilityandlistenedtoapresentationabouthowitallworks.Wealsohad atalkfromDr.Etienneabouthisresearch simulatingblackholecollisions.

Whilemunicipalfinanceisfarfromthe mostquantitativeareaoffinance,IcontinuallyusethemathematicsandproblemsolvingbaseIlearnedinphysics.Whether thatbeworkingfromboundaryconditions foranewbondstructure,improvinganalyticsmethodologies,orwritingcodetoimproveoperationalchallengesthathelpour teambemoreefficient,thebuildingblocks IlearnedinmyUofIphysicsclasseshave servedmewell.

of1.45.TheseNNpotentialsmayserveas asolidbasisforsystematic abinitio calculationsofnuclearstructureandreactionsthat allowforacomprehensiveerroranalysis.In particular,theorderbyorderdevelopment ofthepotentialswillmakepossibleareliabledeterminationofthetruncationerrorat eachorder.Ournewfamilyoflocalpositionspacepotentialsdiffersfromexistingpotentialsofthiskindbyaweakertensorforce asreflectedinrelativelylowD-stateprobabilitiesofthedeuteron(PD ∼< 4.0%for ourN3 LOpotentials)andpredictionsfor thetritonbindingenergyabove8.00MeV (fromtwo-bodyforcesalone).Asaconsequence,ourpotentialsmayleadtodifferentpredictionswhenappliedtolightand intermediate-massnucleiin abinitio calcu-

PhDthesis:Planetaryobliquityevolution:excitedretrograderotatorsandtidal resonantencounters

Abstract:Thesearchforextraterrestrial lifealongwithourdesiretounderstandthe necessaryconditionsforthedevelopmentof lifearelargemotivatorsinthefieldofastronomy.AlthoughtheEarthremainsas oursoledatapoint,itseemsoverwhelmingly likelythateitherotherSolarSystembodiesordistantexoplanetshad,have,orwill havethecapacitytohostlifeoftheirown. Nonetheless,theassessmentofaworld’spotentialforhabitabilityisacomplexproblemthatrequiresthoroughstudyofmany contributingaspects.Onekeyaspectisthe valueandevolutionofaplanet’sobliquity, oraxialtilt,whichsetsthenatureofitsseasonsandlong-termclimatebygoverningthe distributionofsolarfluxacrossitssurface. Althoughweenjoyapleasantclimatethanks totheEarth’sstablemoderateobliquity, otherplanetarybodiesmaybeeithereven betterofforseverelychallengedincompari-

son.Inmydissertation,Ihelpbuildtoward amorecompletepictureofhabitabilityby studyingplanetaryobliquityevolutionwith theuseofnumericalsimulationsofplanetary systems.BeginningwithChapter1,Iprovideabriefbackgroundofthedynamicsthat driveobliquityevolutionanddescribepreviousworkthatestablishesourcurrentunderstandingmovingforward.InChapter2,I discussathreateningsecularspin-orbitresonancethatcandestabilizetheobliquities ofretrograderotators(planetswithobliquitiesgreaterthan90degrees).Next,in Chapter3IintroduceSMERCURY-T,a toolthatallowsforthestudyofplanetary obliquityevolutionundertheinfluenceof tidalforces.Finally,inChapter4Iapply SMERCURY-Ttostudythetidalobliquity evolutionofamoonlessEarthandapotentiallyhabitableearlyVenus.Eachofthese chaptersprovideswidercontributionspast theirindividualresultsbyurgingdirection tofuturestudies,releasingpubliclyavailable software,oridentifyingtrendsandprocess thatmaybeimportanttotheobliquityevolutionofextrasolarplanets.Thesefindings canideallybeappliedtosuchexoplanetsystemsinthefutureandfurtherourcapability todetectandcharacterizetheirspinstates.
