The Department has had quite a year. The sudden and tragic loss of Ruprecht Machleidt was felt deeply by everyone, and we have yet to fully regain our balance. A memorial service was held in January with family and friends. For those who did not know Rup well, there is a memorial article later in the newsletter. Christine Berven retired from the faculty last summer but remains active as emerita, continuing to supervise Ph.D. students Jonah Haw and Johnny Moore. Her long-time student, Dillon Morehouse, accepted a position at the Bonneville Power Administration as a Physical Scientist and started in mid February. His work is in the scheduling of real-time power generation for the hydroelectric facilities. Andreas Vasdekis has shared in two patents, along with graduate student Jinming Zhang for one:
There was another spectacular show of northern lights in May, captured here by recent M.S. graduate, Will Miller. Earlier in the year there were some amazing sunsets.
