P r e s i d e n t C h u c k S ta b e n Chuck Staben took office as the 18th president of the University of Idaho on March 1, 2014.

Staben’s research focused on fungal developmental biology, bioinformatics and fungal genomics.

He received grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health and other agencies. He has served on NSF and NIH grant review panels and recently served on a National Research Council committee that reviewed the Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research and the Institutional Development Award programs for the U.S. Senate. Staben taught microbiology, genetics, bioinformatics and introductory biology and he received numerous awards for teaching. Staben received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana in 1978 and a doctoral degree in biochemistry from the University of California, Berkeley in 1984. He is originally from Waukegan, Ill.

During President Staben’s first two years at the University of Idaho, he has led new statewide enrollment initiatives to meet Idaho’s needs while maintaining excellence in graduate and professional education, research and outreach. The University completed a new Strategic Plan through 2025. In 2015, the University concluded its successful capital campaign, and raised $261 million dollars, the largest fundraising campaign in Idaho history. Staben believes that public research universities keep our nation strong, and that UI plays a unique role in making Idaho a better place to live, with a more educated, engaged and prosperous citizenry.

Prior to his service at Idaho, Staben served as the provost of the University of South Dakota from 2008-14. From 2005-08, he served as the associate vice president for research at the University of Kentucky, and acted as vice president from 200607. Prior to that appointment, he was a professor of biology from 1989-2008 and served as the chair of the biology department from 2000-04. Previously, he was a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford University from 1987-89 and at Chiron Research Laboratories from 1985-86. He was also a graduate research and teaching assistant at the University of California, Berkeley from 1978-84.

Staben and his wife, Dr. Mary Beth Staben, have three children: Mac, Cal and Rae. Mac and Cal both began medical school in fall 2014. Rae graduated in 2016 from Stanford University with a degree in economics. Mary Beth is a practicing physician of internal medicine.

Guest Speakers University of Idaho – Moscow Marilyn Denis is a veteran broadcaster, host of Canada’s mostwatched daytime lifestyle series, “The Marilyn Denis Show” on CTV, and co-host of “Roger & Marilyn” on Toronto’s No. 1 ranked radio station, 104.5 CHUM-FM. A dominating presence in Toronto radio and Canadian television, Denis’ quick wit, connection with the audience and charm have made her a much-beloved figure in CHUM-FM’s 30-year history and a favorite among television viewers nationwide.

Denis was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and earned her bachelor’s degree in radio and television from what is now the University of Idaho’s College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences in 1979. While at UI, she became the first female DJ at KRPL in Moscow. After graduating, she moved to Calgary where she held various radio and television positions including programmer, music Marilyn Denis director and traffic reporter. It wasn’t until she auditioned to become Roger Ashby’s co-host that Denis found her niche. In 1986, she became Ashby’s co-host at CHUM-FM, where she has become an iconic voice for the Toronto morning show listeners.

Denis began her career in television by reporting on sports, weather and entertainment at CFCN-TV (CTV Calgary) and working as a freelance reporter for TSN. She also shared hosting duties on Bravo!’s Gemini Award-winning concert series “Live at the Rehearsal Hall” and was host of the popular daily show “Cityline” for nearly 20 years. “The Marilyn Denis Show,” launched in 2011, was recently named Best Talk Program for the second year in a row at the 2017 Canadian Screen Awards (CSAs).

In 2017, Denis received the Allan Waters Broadcast Lifetime Achievement Award, presented during the Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Awards, and became the first female broadcaster to receive this prestigious award. A triple Gemini Award-winner, Denis also received The Rosalie Award, honoring Canadian women who have paved the way for others in radio broadcasting in 2006. She also was listed as one of Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 by WXN in 2013.

In addition to her professional achievements, Denis is a champion for many Canadian charities and is the proud mother of Adam Wylde, 29, a successful broadcaster in his own right.

University of Idaho – Boise Meg Carlson ’76 is president and CEO of Prosperity Organic Foods, a mission-driven company guided by integrity, authenticity and purpose since 2010.

Carlson received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from what is now the University of Idaho’s College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences in 1976, and earned an MBA from Washington State University.

Prosperity Organic Foods is launching and growing MELT Organic as a brand to help parents make better food choices through amazing plant-based products. Carlson has an extensive background in strategic business development and general management gained through nearly 20 years of experience in corporate management. As cofounder of Carlson Hall, she provided merger and acquisition advisory services to privately held companies in the Northwest for 10 years. Her executive Meg Carlson leadership skills were honed as a vice president and a member of the Management Board of Ore-Ida Foods, Inc., a subsidiary of the H. J. Heinz Company. During her tenure, she successfully created a new business unit and directed its expansion from $100 million to $240 million in sales revenues over five years, building healthy brands such as Bagel Bites.

She has garnered recognition for her leadership throughout her career, culminating in the 2014 Silver and Gold Award from the University of Idaho for “a distinguished record of achievement and service in a specialized area of endeavor.”

Carlson is active in EO, the world’s only global network for entrepreneurs, is an emeritus member of the Advisory Board for the University of Idaho College of Business and Economics, and currently serves as chair of the Arid Club Board.

University of Idaho – Idaho Falls Rick Aman, Ph.D., is the president of Eastern Idaho Technical College (EITC) in Idaho Falls, a post he has held since July 2015.

Aman has a doctorate in community college leadership from Oregon State University, an MBA in management from Golden Gate University in San Francisco, Calif., and a bachelor’s degree in education –­ Bachelor of Science from Western Ore. University in Monmouth, Oregon. Aman and his wife, Linda, have been married for 38 years and they have two grown sons who live in Portland.

Aman has a long career in educational leadership. Prior to leading EITC, Aman served for a year as the interim vice president of Student Services for Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Ore. He also served as vice president of instruction and student services at the College of Western Idaho in Boise from 2008-12. At the time, CWI was newly Rick Aman, Ph.D. formed through the creation of a community college taxing district in the Treasure Valley, which was created in 2007. Aman was responsible for the startup of CWI in the areas of instruction, curriculum development and student support. These duties included hiring of the initial cadre of college faculty, instructional leadership, creation of academic programming, curriculum development and student support services for new students.

The Amans are originally from Oregon. He was commissioned as an Air Force officer after college graduation and spent four years on active duty flying several types of aircraft. He and his wife left active duty and moved back to the Portland area where he was an Air Force Reserve instructor pilot flying C-130 aircraft in a combat search and rescue role out of Portland International airport. He retired as a lieutenant colonel with 21 years of service and 5,000 flight hours. Aman’s two-year college administration career began in 1992 at Portland Community College with 16 years of teaching and administrative responsibilities at various campus locations around Portland.

University of Idaho – Coeur d’Alene Dr. James A. Robson ’69, is a native Idahoan with deep roots. His greatgreat-grandfather was the first Supreme Court justice for the Territory of Idaho, and then became the first Supreme Court justice for the new state of Idaho. His great-grandfather was a district judge for Idaho, and lived in Harrison. His grandparents graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School in 1916 and his grandfather was an executive for the Bunker Hill Co. in Kellogg. His father graduated from UI’s College of Law, and served as an Idaho attorney general. Robson is proudly part of four generations of Vandals, his children are the fourth generation. His granddaughters are in line to be the fifth.

Robson was born in Moscow and attended schools in Kellogg, graduating from high school in 1965. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta at the University of Idaho and in 1969, he received a bachelor’s degree in predental studies. He earned a Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry from the University of Oregon Dental School in 1972.

In 1975, Robson opened Avondale Dental and continues to practice there today. He has been very active in dental organizations, serving as president of the Kootenai County Dental Society, North Idaho Dental Society and the Idaho State Dental Association and is a past delegate to the American Dental Association. He has belonged to numerous dental study groups throughout the years and he received many honors and awards, including the ISDA’s Presidents Award and named by his peers as the most Outstanding Esthetic Dentist in the area.

Robson believes in giving back to the community and youth programs. He has helped further the educational mission of the University of Idaho by serving on the UI Alumni Board and on the Phi Delta Theta House Corporation Board. He has been a contributor to the Vandal Scholarship Fund for more than 30 years and he and his wife, Shelly Robson ‘91, who works for Vandal Athletics, helped in the latest modernization of the ASUI-Kibbie Dome as “Stadium Builders.”

H o n o r a ry D e g r e e s An honorary degree is awarded to a person deserving of honor by virtue of scholarly distinction, noteworthy public service or significant contributions to the state of Idaho. In the selection of candidates for honorary degrees, preference is given to those who are Idaho residents or University of Idaho graduates.

University of Idaho – Moscow - Honorary Doctorate Former Idaho Governor Dirk Kempthorne graduated from the University of Idaho in 1975 with a bachelor’s degree in political science from what is now the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences. At UI, he was elected president of the Associated Students of the University of Idaho, where he led the students’ effort to build the dome over what is now the ASUI-Kibbie Activity Center.

Kempthorne has a long career serving the state of Idaho. In 1985, Kempthorne was elected mayor of Boise, and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1992. In 1998, he was elected governor of Idaho. In 2006, Kempthorne was nominated by President George W. Bush and confirmed by the Senate as the 49th Secretary of the Interior. He is now president and CEO of the American Council of Life Insurers.

While mayor, Kempthorne initiated the revitalization of downtown Boise.

As a U.S. senator, he won enactment of two landmark bills. As Interior Secretary, Kempthorne developed a plan to prepare national parks for their second century of service and also listed the polar bear as a threatened species.

While serving the state as governor, Kempthorne addressed issues of unsafe schools, which included leading the effort for a new high school in Troy. During the 2003 national economic crisis, Kempthorne created a program to invest in facilities at every college and university. This included remodeling the Teaching and Learning Center at UI. While governor, Kempthorne implemented the project to link all rural areas of Idaho through fiber optic cables, allowing students and businesses to access the world through the Internet. Also, through his Connecting Idaho program, the state launched 57 road and bridge construction projects. The improved infrastructure saves at least 88 lives per year, according to Idaho Transportation Department and the Idaho State Police. Some of these saved lives are students traveling home during the holidays and breaks. He also negotiated the largest Indian Water Rights settlement in state history with the Nez Perce Tribe.

On Sept. 18, 1977, Dirk and Patricia Merrill, also a University of Idaho graduate, were married at sunrise on top of Moscow Mountain. They have two children, Heather and Jeff, and four grandchildren.

A l u m n i A s s o c i at i o n Alumni Hall of Fame 2017 This award was created in 1962 and recognizes alumni who have achieved national or international distinction by their accomplishments and leadership. Consideration is given for: distinction in career accomplishments; leadership within career organizations; voluntary leadership efforts in charitable causes; leadership efforts which have improved the cultural, social, political or economic well-being of society; prior recognition and honors; and artistic, innovative or technical accomplishments.

Roger Contor ’53 served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War before graduating from the University of Idaho in 1953 with a degree in zoology from the College of Science. For 30 years, he worked for the National Park Service (NPS), as a park ranger, superintendent and then director of the Alaska Region. A major career accomplishment for Contor came in 1972, when he served as the Secretary General of the Second World Conference on National Parks held in Yellowstone. The conference was attended by 600 delegates from 88 nations, and they established the World Heritage System.

In addition to serving the United States park system, in 1968 Contor served as an adviser to the State of New South Wales, Australia, as it established its own national parks and reserve programs.

Roger Contor

Contor dedicated his career to wilderness preservation, wildlife and the outdoors. After retiring from the NPS in 1985, Contor served on the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission as well as the Committee on Improving Science and Technology in the NPS. He lives in Port Townsend, Wash., with his wife, Susan.

John Norbury ’83 was born in Melbourne, Australia, and graduated from the University of Idaho’s College of Science with a doctorate in theoretical nuclear and particle physics. He was hired as a post-doctoral researcher at NASA Langley, and returned to Australia briefly before coming back to the U.S. and entering a career in academia. Norbury was a visiting assistant professor of physics at UI from 1986-87. He joined the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse in 1992, then moved to UW Milwaukee in 1997.

Norbury began working full time for NASA in 2007 after earning his U.S. citizenship. He is now the lead research physicist at NASA Langley Research Center and leader of the Space Radiation Group.

On Aug. 24, 2016, Norbury received NASA’s Exceptional Achievement Medal, one of the highest honors given by the organization. Norbury’s work centers around calculating the radiation astronauts and spacecraft are likely to experience in space, creating a database of nuclear reaction models, and leading a space radiation summer school for graduate students. Understanding and being able to protect astronauts from radiation is a critical component of NASA’s goal to send a human mission to Mars.

About the University of Idaho Foundation, Inc. The University of Idaho Foundation was established in 1970 to attract private financial support to aid in the achievement of institutional goals and to manage assets for the benefit of the University of Idaho. The Foundation is governed by a board of directors of up to 25 volunteer voting members.

University of Idaho’s WWAMI Medical Education Program is a partnership with the University of Washington School of Medicine and the states of Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. Started in 1972, WWAMI is currently in its 45th year of successfully educating Idaho’s physicians. The WWAMI program is nationally accredited through its partnership with the UW School of Medicine, and allows 40 Idaho medical students to complete their first 18 months of medical training at the University of Idaho, Moscow campus. Idaho’s medical students complete the remainder of their clinical training in Idaho and throughout the five-state WWAMI region.

Amin Ahmadzadeh, Ph.D., Co-Chair, and Matt Doumit, Ph.D., Co-Chair of Animal and Veterinary Science The University of Idaho cooperates with Washington State University in a program of veterinary medical education, research and service. In the program, students from Idaho take the first three years of professional training in veterinary medicine at Washington State University; faculty members from Idaho and WSU offer instruction in the professional and academic curricula.

In the fourth year of the program, students receive part of the clinical training at the Caldwell, Idaho, veterinary medical facility.

University of Idaho President’s Medallions

Maces date to the Middle Ages and symbolize strength and authority. Each is unique and reflects the values and characteristics of the institution. The University’s chief marshal, who leads all academic processions, carries the mace.

The first medallion was created by Idaho artists George and Macky Roberts. The President’s Medallion was first used in 1965 at the inauguration of Ernest Hartung, the University of Idaho’s 12th president.

The medallion’s base is a three-and-a-half-inch disc of pure Idaho silver. Mounted on the base is a disc of native jasper; a sterling silver sunburst is inlaid in the disc. Inside the sunburst is a modification of the Chinese character meaning “mountain,” which features three upward-pointing prongs.

Over the center prong is a gold inlay, thus symbolizing “Light on the Mountain.”

The University of Idaho’s mace, used for the first time at the centennial commencement, is 32 inches long, made of walnut and encircled with bands of Idaho gold and silver in which Idaho garnets and opals have been inlaid. The head is embellished with silver and gold representations of camas plants and syringa flowers. The chair of the University’s Faculty Senate, the marshal of the academic procession, carries the mace in the American tradition, at a 45-degree angle across the chest, while in England, the bearer carries it over the shoulder.

The heavy medallion is worn suspended from a collar woven of Idaho wool, some of which is dyed with dahlia flowers to match the jasper and some of which is from a black sheep.

The second President’s Medallion, worn during commencement by then-President Timothy P. White, was commissioned in 2004. This medallion’s base is a goldleafed University seal and is worn suspended by a chain with gold leaf charms, each representing the Presidents who have served the University.

Hoods

By observing certain features of the academic apparel, it is possible to learn several things about the academic status of the scholar: the level of the degree attained, the branch of learning in which it was earned, and the college or university conferring the degree.

The length of the hood also varies according to the level of degree.

The bachelor’s gown is worn without a hood. A master’s hood is three and one-half feet long, and a doctor’s hood is four feet in length and has panels at the sides. It is from the colors adorning the hood that one can learn two other facts. Lining: the hood is lined with the official color or colors of the college or university conferring the degree (silver and gold, signifying the University of Idaho).

Trimming: the hood is trimmed with velvet of a color appropriate to the wearer’s branch of learning. For example, the trimming for the degree of Master of Science in Agriculture is maize, representing agriculture, rather than golden yellow, representing science. (In the case of the Doctor of Philosophy degree, the dark blue color is used, representing the mastery of the discipline of learning and scholarship, regardless of the branch of learning.) Colors associated with the different disciplines are listed below:

Gowns The gowns differ according to the level of the degree. The sleeves are the principal indicator—gowns of bachelor’s have pointed sleeves; those of master’s have oblong sleeves with an arc cut away at the front; and doctors have round, bell-shaped sleeves. Bachelor’s and master’s gowns are untrimmed. Doctoral gowns have distinctive velvet facing down the front and three velvet bars on each sleeve.

The University of Idaho adopted a doctoral gown of its own in 1989. The silver gown has a panel and sleeve bars of black velvet outlined in antique gold. The beret-styled soft cap is patterned after the Cambridge version instead of the traditional Oxford-style mortarboard.

The cap and gown were designed by Emeritus Professor Edmund Chavez in the University’s centennial year and are worn today by officials and university administration.

Honor Cords Honor Cords, worn around the neck and hanging loosely down the front, identify students who are graduating with honors: gold, summa cum laude (with highest distinction); silver, magna cum laude (with great distinction); and bronze, cum laude (with distinction). The cords are provided by the University of Idaho and are worn on this one occasion only.

Caps The color of the tassel worn on the cap varies with the level of degree. The bachelor’s tassel represents the color appropriate to the major field of study (see colors at right); the master’s and specialist’s tassels are black; and the doctoral tassels are old gold.

Idaho Boise

Premier graduate, research and professional development University of Idaho Boise originated in 1910 when an agricultural Extension program was established in Ada County. In 1953, UI Boise grew with the introduction of teacher education programs, which were expanded in the early 1980s. A cooperative agreement between the University and the Idaho Department of Fish and Game led to the 1963 opening of the Idaho Water Resources Research Institute (IWRRI) with offices in Boise, Moscow and Idaho Falls. Engineering courses were first delivered in Boise in 1988. Agricultural Extension, regional and state personnel, and several University support offices were located in Boise for greater statewide access and service in the early 1990s. In the late 1990s, WWAMI opened its doors in Boise and all UI programmatic, advancement, athletics and other efforts in the community were brought together under the umbrella of UI Boise.

In 2000, the College of Art and Architecture began offering courses in Boise and one year later, the College of Law began offering externship opportunities for third-year law students in the Treasure Valley and it now offers its complete Juris Doctor curriculum in Boise.

Today at the University of Idaho Boise, students, faculty, researchers and staff work on a variety of topics ranging from water, natural resources and the environment; education; law; community sustainability and design; family economics; childhood education; nutrition education; pesticide safety and management; food technology, safety and processing; water resources engineering; and public policy.

Idaho Coeur

d’Alene

The University of Idaho-Coeur d’Alene offers educational opportunities in the classroom, via the internet, and through videoconferencing. Outreach programs have grown substantially in the past several years to meet an increasing demand for services to the off-campus learner.

The University of Idaho-Coeur d’Alene partners with agencies and groups to address the demand for professional development and continuing education in both the public and private sectors of the region. The public schools of Region I and the University of Idaho cooperatively plan staff development classes for all educators of the area. University of Idaho-Coeur d’Alene links local business in-service needs with campus expertise.

“Working together” is a standard for University of Idaho-Coeur d’Alene. As a member of local chambers of commerce and economic development corporations, the University assumes an active role in educational, research and development projects.

The University of Idaho has assisted school districts, governmental agencies, non-profits and municipalities in locating and acquiring grant money for specified projects.

The opportunity to meaningfully contribute to regional economic development is clearly recognized at the University of IdahoCoeur d’Alene. Laboratory facilities are available for research and development in cooperation with corporate partners and entrepreneurs. The Jacklin Science and Technology Center at the University of Idaho Research Park in Post Falls is a technology business incubator facility oriented to stimulating and supporting startup companies. One of our important goals is to apply university resources and expertise to practical problems faced by regional businesses.

In partnership with local tech industry partners, our comprehensive Dign’IT program increases awareness and provides technology education for K-gray learners. In addition, the Idaho legislature has followed through on an investment in a four-year computer science degree in Coeur d’Alene, funding the fourth year of the program this spring.

The University of Idaho-Coeur d’Alene is committed to leadership development with the Master of Business Administration program in northern Idaho. The class schedule is formatted to allow students to earn their MBA degree in just 22 months without interrupting their careers. The program combines the rigor and depth of a traditional MBA with an integrated curriculum and flexible format of an executive program.

The University of Idaho Coeur d’Alene is actively planning for our future in Coeur d’Alene by participating with North Idaho Higher Education, the city of Coeur d’Alene and the Lake City Development Corporation on development of a 90-acre higher education campus in Coeur d’Alene. Planning is underway for a $10 million northern Idaho collaborative education facility to be built in 2017-18 that will provide state-of-the-art student services and classrooms. The University of Idaho-Coeur d’Alene is also leading the community-wide Coeur d’Alene 2030 Vision Project.

Through its degree programs, technology and research centers, and collaborative philosophy, University of Idaho-Coeur d’Alene provides outreach to all people of northern Idaho.

In Idaho Falls, our core mission is engineering, science and technology. Our campus at University Place features high-tech classrooms, excellence in the curriculum offered and renowned faculty who are actively engaged in research. The Center for Advanced Energy Studies research facility is a partnership between the three Idaho universities, University of Wyoming and the Idaho National Laboratory, the Department of Energy’s lead nuclear research laboratory.

University of Idaho has offered degree programs in Idaho Falls for more than 60 years. Since our first graduating class in 1955, more than 2,000 students have earned degrees. Many more have completed certificates and courses for professional and personal development.

Students, faculty and staff at the Idaho Falls Center are part of a community that extends throughout the entire state of Idaho.

University of Idaho has Extension offices located in 42 counties and academic centers in Idaho Falls, Boise, Twin Falls and Coeur d’Alene and the main campus in Moscow. Students can take courses offered by faculty at multiple locations and interact with students from other disciplines.

HISTORY First sung at an Idaho football game in 1931, “Go Vandals, Go” was adopted as Idaho’s only fight song. It was composed by J.M. “Morey” O’Donnell, a longtime Moscow attorney, when he was a freshman at the University. A native of Granite, Idaho (north of Coeur d’Alene), Morey was a child prodigy who began playing the piano at age six, was in an orchestra by 13, and was traveling the world with a dance orchestra by the time he entered the University in 1930.

At that time, Idaho’s fight song was “On Idaho” which was sung to the tune of “On Wisconsin.”

The ASUI sponsored an annual songfest competition among the classes, and one of its purposes was to find a new fight song. “Go Vandals, Go” won the competition in 1930 and immediately became the Vandals only mantra. It was copyrighted by the University in 1931.

The chorus was written as whole notes and half notes so that it could be easily sung by a large crowd. Many school songs are difficult to sing because of the fast beat used to make them spirited. “Go Vandals” instead relies on a heavy drum beat and the nature of the words to carry the spirit. As a result, it is continually cited as one of the top college fight songs in America.
