Crafting an Elevator Speech An elevator speech can be used when meeting employers at career fairs, networking nights, and even during an interview. An elevator speech or pitch is usually 30-45 seconds long that gives the individual you are talking to a brief but comprehensive insight into who you are and where you hope to go as a professional. Your elevator speech may be different depending on who you are talking to. You can tailor different parts of your speech accordingly. First identify a target audience and keep them in mind as you are answering each prompt.
Identify Target Audience:
Introduction Briefly tell your audience who you are & what your current position is.
Experience Write a one to two sentence statement describing a relevant experience you had recently and what skills you gained from this.
Goals Hook your audience with a goal that they could resonate with or relate to.
Solution & Plan What are your hopes/plans for achieving the goal you expressed? How would your audience be a part of that?
Combine all of your sections below by reading it out loud to a peer. Have that peer reflect back to you what they got out of your elevator speech so you can refine or edit your speech. University of Idaho Career Service | 208-885-6121 | careerservices@uidaho.edu
