Policy Research Health Economics Management Clinical Sciences Disparities Research The Master of Public Health (MPH) is the basic professional degree offered by the School of Public Health (SPH). Upon graduation the student will have gained a general understanding of the broad field of public health and competence in a specific public health area. The program prepares students for public health practice or to continue their education through a doctoral degree.

The school wide core is a total of eighteen semester hours which includes three integrated courses totaling fourteen semester hours.

Our master's students participate in and work with professionals in the field through experiences in and out of the classroom. You will create an AP experiences based on your goals with practitioners and experts in policy and administration.

We offer both a two-year full time and a part time schedule with three and four year completion options. Classes are held primarily in the early evening to accommodate our preceptorship program and part time students.

INTEGRATIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCE (ILE) The ILE is part of the Health Policy and Administration (HPA) student’s culminating experience for their MPH degree. The ILE is a professional quality project that showcases integrated principles and knowledge acquired by students regarding targeted aspects of health policy and administration.

The expectation is that HPA students will do either a policy or management-oriented project. ILE projects may be generated from either qualitative (e.g., case studies, key informant interviews) or quantitative (e.g., survey, analysis of secondary data) research. As part of this course, students will develop a written paper on the topic of their choice.

Students may also select alternative products for their ILE project, such as a manual, health/environmental impact assessment, position paper, or undertake a program evaluation, or another approach approved by the ILE instructor/advisor. IPHS 698 is the companion course to fulfill school-wide requirements.

The ILE paper will address a major operational challenge or new programmatic initiative in their preceptorship organization. Because we are located in the City of Chicago where networking opportunities are exceptional in nationally renowned Healthcare Systems, Academic Health Centers, and major Healthcare Associations we can offer our students the unique opportunity to apply knowledge and concepts learned in the classroom in a 12- month long preceptorship.

ILE OBJECTIVES MPH students in Health Policy and Administration will write a paper that demonstrates their ability to: - Identify a significant public health issue (i.e., define why we should care about this topic and how it is relevant for policy or management) - Identify the relevant knowledge and skills from across the MPH program needed to analyze the public health problem selected and apply them - Demonstrate their ability to integrate concepts, analytical methods and/or research techniques in conducting their analysis of the problem, and - Formulate a thorough, coherent and convincing presentation of a managerial or policy proposal addressing the public health issue.
