Are you passionate about public transit, urban sustainability, affordable housing, or city maps? Do you care about making cities better for all people? Do you ask yourself how Chicago came to look like it does today, and what it might take for you to change it? Urban Studies students examine topics such as fair access to affordable housing, clean water, and public spaces, efficient transportation systems, and how to create good jobs in cities. You will master skills like data analysis and designing presentations, learn the tools to make cities ‘great’ and sustainable, and connect to people that can help you make change now and in the future. With a campus located in the heart of Chicago, every day is an opportunity to understand and apply skills learned in the classroom. Urban Studies majors also have the opportunity to further their education by enrolling in our accelerated Joint Bachelors/Masters degree program in Urban Planning and/or combining the Urban Studies major with a minor in Geographic Information Systems (for map-making and spatial analysis) or Sustainable Cities.

CAREER PATHWAYS Learning from faculty who work closely with city officials to change policy and improve urban services, as well as guest speakers and community leaders, urban studies students can pursue a variety of careers. Some students are community organizers who bring residents together and facilitate understanding and solutions to issues in their community. Some students are policy analysts or urban data specialists who use data to change the conversation around an issue, provide insight into the effectiveness of current policies, make recommendations, and understand how government and business decisions impact residents of communities. Urban Studies students also have careers as urban planners and in a wide range of government departments and nonprofit organizations. They work in areas such as public finance, community and economic development, environmental protection, housing, urban farming, and government services.

To remake the increasingly urban world, urban designers need a sophisticated array of cutting-edge skills. In the Master of City Design (MCD) program, the only one of its kind in the downtown of a major global city like Chicago, a diverse, international cohort of students with backgrounds in architecture, urban studies, urban planning, and related fields gain hands-on experience applying their talents to the latest trends in city planning and urban design. With access to industry-leading practitioners, including instructors and design reviewers from firms like Skidmore, Owings, and Merill (SOM), a low student-to-faculty ratio, and hands-on studio practice, the MCD program is an ideal match for students looking to enter the field of city design. With students graduating in less than a year, the MCD program offers an accelerated boost to a promising career.

CAREER PATHWAYS The MCD program is geared towards students with a bachelor degree in architecture, landscape architecture, urban studies, urban planning and related disciplines. Successful graduates can expect to find employment as entry-level urban designers in consulting firms, local governments, non-profits organizations and public sector agencies. Some students also pursue professional careers with real-estate developers, charitable foundations and advocacy groups.

INTERACTIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCES During the summer semester, students complete a collaborative design charrette, giving them a meaningful addition to their portfolio that will encompass all of the skills acquired during the program. One example of such a project was based on encouraging sustainable use of the Chicago River.

ADVISING MCD students receive individual advising from program faculty. Many also seek advice from the many visiting instructors and professional practitioners while benefiting from CUPPA’s signature alumni mentoring program promoting meaningful relationship with the College’s many successful alumni working near and far.

Public Administration students are uniquely poised to apply valuable skills to make positive change in the world. Gaining experience in leadership, financial management, policy analysis, and more, MPA graduates are well-suited to engage in a number of fields upon graduation. With specific training in management, political science, statistics and research methods, survey research, economics, business, organizational theory and decision making, human resources, budgeting and finance, and information technology, graduates gain critical insight into issues of contemporary governance and management. Accelerated, 12–18 month schedules are also available for students looking to gain meaningful experience in a small amount of time.

Students pursuing the Master of Science in Civic Analytics (MSCA) are trained to solve public problems, using principles of data science and civic technology. Through advanced training in coding, applied statistics, and data visualization, graduates are well-equipped to assume positions as data analysts and information officers in government agencies and nonprofits. The curriculum is designed to provide students from any educational background with the coding and statistical skills that are needed to thrive in today’s data-driven workplace. JOINT DEGREE IN URBAN PLANNING AND POLICY AND PUBLIC HEALTH

PLANNING AT THE NEXUS OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT AND HEALTH The professions of urban planning and public health both have roots in the challenges of infectious disease in cities during the progressive era. Today, city planners and public health experts are once again called upon to work at the nexus of the built environment and health. Public health experts are drawn by the role of the environment in fostering or lessening chronic disease and planners are focused on human well-being as a key component in urban sustainability. This dual degree program marries both disciplines into a valuable whole. The need for professionals trained in urban planning & policy and public health is informed by national and international trends focused on improving the health and well-being of urban populations. These include efforts to reduce obesity and chronic diseases (by increasing the walkability of neighborhoods), health inequities, environmental injustice, unhealthy food production and consumption, negative effects of climate change, poor mental health related to long commutes, and exposure to environmental toxins including lead in drinking water and contaminated urban brownfields.

CAREER PATHWAYS The joint MUPP/MPH degree not only allows students interested in the fields of public health and the built environment to work to complete the degree in a shorter period of time, but it also affords students more opportunities to integrate the respective competencies and perspectives of the two disciplines in a deliberate and more coordinated way. It is intended to produce professionals who have the credentials to find employment in either planning or public health but also have the expertise and legitimacy to liaise between the two professions. Graduates of the program would be expected to work on the development of plans, policies and programs to improve health by shaping the built environment and to conduct health impact assessments for proposed urban developments and policies that may have unintended consequences for human health.

Students must complete a minimum of 42 semester hours of course work at UIC’s School of Public Health (SPH) as required by the specific SPH division and must complete 60 semester hours of coursework as required for the MUPP (inclusive of shared credit hours). Coursework taken within the MPH program may qualify for up to twenty hours of elective credit toward the Master of Urban Planning and Policy depending on the specific courses chosen and applicability to the elective credit required for the MUPP degree. Courses taken in the MUPP program may also satisfy one or more MPH divisional requirements as specified in the Joint Articulation Agreement. Students will be required to meet all other curricular requirements of both the MUPP and the SPH MPH division.

Students in the joint program will have advisors from both Urban Planning and Policy and Public Health who will assist the student with each respective program. Within UPP, students have access to a program advisor, a faculty advisor, and a tight-knit student community upon joining the program. Students also benefit from a small faculty-student ratio, ensuring consistent access to faculty members.

ADMISSIONS To be admitted to the joint master’s program, a student must meet the admissions requirements of each individual degree program. Students from either program may transfer into the joint program from either of the individual degree programs before their second year of study if they meet the admissions requirements of the other degree program. Students entering from the SPH individual degree program will begin the UPP core sequence immediately. Students leaving the joint degree after completing the necessary hours for the MUPP degree, but before completing the MPH, will receive the former degree. Students who fail to complete the MUPP degree will be required to complete a comprehensive MPH program in order to receive the MPH degree.

CORE CURRICULUM Depending on the students’ MPH division choice and course selections, students in the joint Master’s degree may complete both degrees within three to three and one-half years of full time study. (Part-time study is also an option.) If the two degrees were pursued separately, the average time would be four years for students attending fulltime.

Those pursuing a PhD in Public Administration carry out disciplined research and undertake substantial projects exploring pressing issues in contemporary governance. Working closely with faculty to design and implement a research project, PhD students conduct high-level research that’s grounded in a curriculum. Students experience a mix of theoretical and practical insights into the world of public administration. Research skills are underlined to emphasize that the PhD in public administration is, fundamentally, a degree in research. Upon completing the PhD in Public Administration, graduates are well-prepared for careers in academia or professional research. They are highly qualified to begin work in higher education or high-level research areas in government, think tanks, non-profits, and other civic organizations.

CORE CURRICULUM In addition to learning how to do research, students are expected to become experts in the research being conducted within their chosen areas of concentration. Core courses are enhanced by selecting a specialization in public and non-profit management, financial management, urban governance and networks, or survey methods.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES Research assistantships are available from the productive research faculty or from one of the multiple research centers in the College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs. Qualifying students can access department appointed graduate assistantships which provide four years of funding to pursue their work, during which time students may also work as department appointed teaching assistants in undergraduate and master courses. Select government agencies offer placement of UIC PhD students and university fellowships, scholarships, and funding opportunities are also available. CUPPA’s eight interdisciplinary research centers and institutes directly explore how communities evolve to meet the needs of residents and improve lives. Ensuring social justice, promoting access to transportation and services, providing advocacy for underserved populations, creating jobs in economically depressed neighborhoods, and improving government management and performance at all levels are just some of the areas our research examines.
