THE STRANGERS is presented by special arrangement with CAA, CreativeArtsAgency, Inc., New York.

The Strangers was commissioned by The Clarence Brown Theatre in residence University of Tennessee, Knoxville (Cal MacLean, Artistic Director).

The play was developed with generous support from the Lark Play Development Center (John Clinton Eisner, Artistic Director) at their annual residency with New York Stage and Film.

About the Play Playwright christopher pena reimagined Thorton Wilder’s Our Town with characters who represent our America today- people with a mixed racial, cultural and religious backgrounds, rather than the original all-white inhabitants of a New Hampshire hamlet. the strangers begins with a homecoming, or more accurately, “cris returns to a place he used to know,” to a town called “everytown”- a place that stands in for any hometown in America. cris has been away for a long time, and his return instigates a love story. In the strangers, folks rise and fall like fireworks on the 4th of july, some big, some small: failures of empathy and failures of action that can change a life in an instant.

About the Director Marcela Muñoz is a director, actor, teaching artist and translator. She is the Managing and Co-Artistic Director of Aguijón Theater, Chicago’s longest-running Latino theater company. Besides her long history with Aguijón Theater, her Chicago stage acting and directing credits include Teatro Luna, Teatro Vista, Victory Gardens Theatre and Goodman Theatre. Other directing credits include Urban Theater Company, Chicago Dramatists and the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has also been Assistant Director at Steppenwolf Theatre Company and Writers Theatre. As actor/director she has participated in international theater festivals in Peru, Argentina and Colombia. Deeply committed to mentoring and creating opportunities for young artists, she developed and leads the Nuestra Cultura Theater Program at Aguijón Theater for After School Matters. She studied Communications at DePaul University, is a graduate of The School at Steppenwolf, a 3Arts Award recipient and currently serves on the Board of the League of Chicago Theatres.
