UH RISES ‘AIR’ PROGRAM – ACCELERATION INTO RESEARCH UH RISES ‘AIR’ is a summer training program sponsored by UH RISES to equip our full-time research trainees with the ability to understand research methodology and basic statistics during their dedicated research years. UH faculty and UH RISES staff will conduct hands-on statistical training using STATA, introduce basic concepts of research design and clinical research conduct, and provide participants with professional development curriculum.
When July 11 – August 10 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 9am – 12pm
The program will take place in-person for five weeks beginning July 11 th through August 10 th with programming based Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday in the Lakeside 7 Conference Room.

Participation is open to surgical residents and trainees. Current Department of Surgery Allen Scholars and Research Fellows are expected to attend the entire program and are automatically enrolled. All Department of Surgery Allen Scholars and Research Fellows will be provided UH-issued laptops with pre-loaded statistical software. SURGERY RESEARCH IN THE NEWS FDA-Approved Ivosidenib and IDH1 Mutant Anti-Tumor Treatment Improves Median Survival Rate of Pancreatic Cancer in Two-Fold Mouse Model (CWRU Daily, June 2022) “Case Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Jordan Winter, MD (Developmental Therapeutics Program) and Ali Vaziri-Gohar, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow at CWRU School of Medicine, demonstrated that genetic deletion of IDH1 reduced the growth of pancreatic cancer cells in cell culture under low nutrient conditions and in mouse models of pancreatic cancer. They also found that the FDA -approved mutant IDH1 inhibitor, Ivosidenib, was surprisingly potent against the wild-type form of the protein, especially when combined with the important low magnesium condition. This last point had been neglected in previous studies.
